This is a well rounded and ever evolving fragrance. It starts off with a blast of cypress, refined leather and bergamot and i clearly get the resemblence to a cross of Encre Noir and Wonderwood which is a great combo to begin with but it gets even better. That phase gets weaker in the process but this DNA never disapears completely. This thing changes color like a chameleon with each mintue but it does so with patience and never abruptly. Everything happens very smoothly, its simply superbly blended. After half an hour i just smell pure class, warmth, unterstatement, richness and harmony. The whiffs i get every now and then from my own arms are so wonderful and smooth that i cant stop sniffing my arms. The drydown is so effin great with a fine but clearly noticable smoke surrounding the cypress, bergamot and leather. I dont get the Aventus vibe and i am happy about that. In my top 3

Medicinal and piney, like a Christmas tree in a hospital. After about an hour the medicinal vibe starts to blend smoothly with your body chemistry, making the pine scent very sweet and smooth. Consistently stays within arm’s reach for six hours. I really like this one, but for $110 for a 30ml bottle? There are much more beautiful scents out there for a fraction of the price.

For the love of God please stop comparing this to Aventus.
This is an incredibly green coniferous scent with a leather base. A real homage to the 80’s power scent theme with a modern twist.
It’s every bit as close to Polo green as it is to Aventus.
Opens with Lots of Cypress and citrus to give it a bit of that modern flare.
There’s a real herbal quality to it that gets almost medicinal at about the 30 minute mark.
    I also get Pine.
Please don’t get this hoping for Aventus. It’s not. I keep searching for the resemblance it’s just not there.
What it is however is good.
It has a mature feel to it.
Royal Vintage is Strong, Masculine, classy, and versatile.
It’s good on its own merits without need for comparison to other fragrances.

It could be a quality copy of Aventus. There are cheaper clones of Aventus so this Micallef doesn’t have reasons for existance imo but I like it.

I like this – but whilst my first impression was that it was close to Aventus, a direct side by side comparison with the Creed and subsequent wearings have made me realise that this is not so Aventus like as I thought. But I can see the link.
This opens very dry & coniferous, an almost piney scent which, with – some citrus & leather does seems to create an Aventus feel. But it’s an Aventus feel that isn’t as close to Aventus in the way CDNI is (after 30 minutes). There is no hallmark Aventus creaminess here. I suppose you could say this is an aged Aventus – Aventus’s grandad perhaps!
The first hour of this is fairly linear and whilst it does becomes closer to Aventus as time goes on (especially after 2+ hours on my skin) – I’d say that Mancera’s Cedrat boise, which also opens very differently, is after an hour or two probably more similar to it than Aventus. I’ll do a side by side of them and re-edit this.
So, a nice scent for certain but with average performance – for the price this is unforgivable.
If you are looking for an Aventus clone – there are closer ones out there that are much cheaper. I got a bottle for half its retail – would never buy another bottle unless I find a similar deal. But in truth – that would be the bargain hunter in me – this is a redundant scent in my opinion. What it is trying to do has been done much better.

Not so similliar to aventus in my opinion. İ get fresh cut grass or grass juice like smell most of time Kind of good but little boring

I have a batch of 2012 Aventus that is off the charts smoky. This smells like that more than any other clone I’ve smelled. Some fruity notes off the top with a good dose of smoke. As it dries you get cedar and smoke. And then just wood. Probably the closest Aventus clone I’ve tried and I think I’ve tried them all.
Longevity is below average on my skin (3-5 hours) with moderate projection for an hour. It’s similar to Aventus’s current batches on my skin, definitely worse than my 2012 Aventus. A bit disappointing for longevity so I’d probably use it on warmer date nights where a few hours of performance is all you need.
An 8.0/10 for me. Smells very nice and worth a look if you don’t want Aventus decants for the same price (and a smoky feel).

I finally purchased a bottle of Royal Vintage (I’ve been wanting one since 2014) and have been wearing it today while at work. I am a huge Aventus fan and have a dozen clones, but I love wearing Cedre Boise on it’s own merits so I was not expecting Roytal Vintage to be identical…and it’s not.
When first applied, Royal Vintage doesn’t smell anything like Aventus and, in fact, it reminded me more of Rasasi Tobacco Blaze or another M. Micallef fragrance Avant Garde (2006) in that it’s smokey/ashy, spicey and perhaps a bit leathery. Let’s just say I was confused at this point…
However, in a just a few seconds an Aventus kinda burnt-pineapple and smokey-birch vibe pushes forward…similar vibe, but also different in that it’s greener, smokier and I definitely pull-out leather in the top notes. I detect a fruity accord (not bergamot) even though fruits are not a listed ingredient. I wouldn’t say it smells like pineapple…just a tangy-fruit aroma.
Fifteen minutes on my skin and Royal Vintage has changed dramatically. Gone are the Aventus tones and what remains are cypress and musky-leather fragrance wrapped in a earthy/spicy aromatic blanket. I do not consider Royal Vintage to be a people-pleaser, but not many will dislike it and I find that it’s an interesting scent perfectly suited to wear in the office or in professional settings (Spring or Fall) when Aventus may be too bold and too forward.
Sadly, performance is crap in that it lasted 4-hours on my skin and doesn’t project (i.e., skin scent) for all but the opening 15-minutes…and I have fragrance friendly skin. Overall, I give Royal Vintage a like but I do not consider it to be an Aventus clone (low on my list) nor does it doesn’t perform well on my skin.

There’s a resemblence to Aventus in the first hour due to the smoke, leather and bergamot. But then the cypress takes centre stage after an hour and the fragrance goes in a different direction. At this point in time it starts to resemble the smoky cypress phase of Chanel’s Sycomore. But it doesn’t mellow like Sycomore does, retaining its smoky, woody demeanour. Worth having a 30ml bottle as its a nice scent and is priced very fairly. Should last a long while because performance is excellent.

A long lasting cousin to Aventus. Aventus is my staple while this I take out occasionally. A brilliant smoky, dry, peppery version of Aventus layered with piney & mossy nuances. Great projection and longevity. In comparison, it misses the juicy apple from Aventus and is dry as opposed to the humid ambergris. 8/10 for sure. Guys who like their Aventus smokier or need something to deviate from the norm must sample this. It’s affordable too.

Just picked this up on sale at Fragrancenet and must say, this is my favorite Aventus alternative I’ve yet to try of many.
Much has already been said to describe how this smells – Royal Vintage is essentially a more upscale, woody, leathery version of Aventus. Less pineapple, more citrus. Add cypress like the kind in Tom Ford’s Italian Cypress and a leather note similar to the excellent Bottega Veneta Pour Homme or Hermes Bel Ami, add a dash of smokiness and voila… Royal Vintage is born. It reminds me a lot of Mancera Cedrat Boise with more woods (especially cypress) plus a bit more smoke than Aventus. But better quality ingredients than both without the powderiness of the Mancera.
Best way I can compare Aventus and Royal Vintage is with a quick analogy…
Imagine if Aventus is the young up and coming entrepreneur that dresses in nice suits with an unbuttoned shirt and no tie, does well financially and likes to attend wild, upscale parties every weekend. He’s attractive, does well with women and usually goes home with a beautiful girl he meets at most parties.
Royal Vintage mingles at the same parties, except he is the wealthy, handsome and mysterious billionaire wearing the 3 piece suit and tie with a supermodel on each arm. He doesn’t just attend these same parties, he hosts them at his mansion and decides if guys like Aventus even set foot in the door.

I had long ago smelled this one in Prague when I was in the search of a cheaper alternative to Aventus. I had smelled so many that day I just remember the evident resemblance between the two and that it remained for days on the piece of paper. After more than one year and I decided to give it a blind buy and I must say that is VERY SIMILAR to the Creed one . It is a bit smokier, spicier and drier(more noticeable in the first hour) and you can often feel more woods, specially cedar or the cypress, even though, I would dare to say it smells 85% similar to Aventus, it even manages to somehow keep some of the SAME fruitiness of it. if you like/love aventus, you can FOR SURE, give this one a try or just blind buy it at a good price, I am almost certain you would not be dissapointed. One important thing….THIS niche quality and it DOES NOT SMELL CHEAP AT ALL!!!! On the other hand, there are also similar smells that are either too sweet or a LITTLE cheap smelling, these, however, would also give you an intro to the AVENTUS TYPE OF SMELL, I am talking about Jaguar Vision and Zara gold (SWEETER), these last 2 offer great value for what you pay…
    As for royal vintage:
    Smell:8-9 out of 10
Aventus Similarity: 8,5 (aventus performs a BIT better)
    Longevity: 7 (5-7 hours)
    Projection: 7
    Sillage: 7
Overall: 8 out of 10 and I really like it!
p.s. I also find many many similarities to cedrat boise…I would say these 2 are even closer than R. vintage and Aventus…all of the 3 nice smelling fragrances and made of high quality ingredients….

I recently bought a bottle of this superb product of Micallef and I have to say that IT IS FANTASTIC. I am one of the fans of Aventus. The problem is the quality of this magnificent and expensive perfume is not as well as It used to be with a high price. So I was looking for a perfume that has the scent of Aventus with lower price. Finally I found it. Royal Vintage smells absolutely like aventus in every aspect with lower price. I never buy Amy more Aventus because I have found Royal Vintage. Tombs up

This one is a mix between the smokey Aventus 14c01 and Cedrat Boise!
I get a smokeygreen cypress with a hint of citrus at the opening that develops into patchoulislightly leathery scent and after that a hint of musk starts to appear!
Performance is not bad but both cedrat and aventus perform better on me!
i own 2 aventus and 1 cedrat so this aint a buy for me! and since its expensive i recommend that you get cedrat instead for half of the price!

Mature version of Aventus if I have to call it aventus similar scent. It is more similar to Tom Ford Italian Cypress than aventus. It is like you mixing those 2 scents together.

I recently did a sample swap so I was lucky enough to try Royal Vintage. (Thanks Todd!) After spraying this one, my initial impressions was “Yes, this is a smoky Aventus batch. Nice!” Let me preface this by saying that I have a love / hate relationship with Aventus, mostly based on batch number. I may be in the minority, but I like the smoky batches as much as the well balanced batches. And RV starts of as a very smoky batch of Aventus to my nose. The initial spray also fills the room with the scent, similar to Aventus.
After a few hours the smokiness dies down a bit, but doesn’t disappear, and RV becomes a little sweeter on my skin. At this point the projection dissipates a bit as well. Not a skin scent but it no longer fills the room at this point.
A few hours more and the scent settles down a bit more. The smokiness dissipates a bit more and the sweetness remains. The scent is still there, but more of a skin scent at this point.
Overall I get good projection, especially in the first 3 hours, and good longevity, about 8 hours, on my skin.
RV is a very versatile scent. I can wear this one in jeans just as easily as in a suit.
I am not going to get into the debate of this is better than Aventus, or Aventus is better than this. That is a personal choice that only you can make for yourself. Having said that, if you like the smoky batches of Aventus, you should try a sample of RV.

Agree this is smoky Aventus, which has started to come back in vogue. It smells gorgeous to my nose. 3 sprays in the morning and I’m getting whiffs all day at work. The 30ml bottle is well worth the money.

I picked up a few samples of this as I wanted to see how this stacked up against Aventus. It’s OK…but it really reminds me of a smoky Aventus batch (the kind I don’t like). Some fruit off the top…but really dries down to a smoky birch/leather that is OK, but not my cup of tea.
In some ways, this is the closest fragrance to Aventus – I’ve tried/owned Scent of Peace, Cedrat Boise, etc.

Solid and Serious Like a Cypress
More handsome older brother of Aventus. Clean non-ashy cool, inky, and a little bit salty.with no sweetness from fruits or cushionlike feeling from vanilla which, in my book, means no playfulness and more masculinity.
    High Quality.
projection and longevity(8 heavy sprays): 3 feet for the first hour, 2 feet in the second and 1 foot in the 3rd., and from then on skinscent for one day.

This the smoky Aventus ( 2012 batch )
Doesn’t project and last like Aventus but very
Good alternative with high quality same as the vintage batch of Aventus
I if u want same smell for half the price
And almost same performance of Royal vintage
Get Armaf club de nuit intense men ( it’s 95% Aventus ) smoky also
And mix it with insseruction pure 2 ( it’s 40% aventus ) sweet but no power
    In term of performance
    Enjoy !

Yes. It’s better than Aventus. Reminds me of a uncirculated version, but the similarities are definitely there. The smokiness isn’t there. It’s a great fragrance. With out comparing it to another fragrance, on its own it’s a masterpiece. It screams quality. Even when it’s wet on the skin I don’t smell any alcohol at all. The notes are blended so well. It’s an active scent. Fresh and masculine. It provides about 4 hours projection and I get a solid 8hrs longevity. I would rather have this over aventus bc I like to be different and most importantly I like to smell the best.

    M. Micallef chose the perfect name for this great fragrance, where vintage doesn’t mean “old” but timeless. I find the fruity leather irresistible and perfect on my skin. In the drydown it’s slightly darker, thicker and more dry than Aventus (that I find sweeter and fresher). One of the most universal fragrances I have,I wear it regularly for office from autumn to spring as well as for official occasions or in the evening. Not a “sporty” fragrance, a minimum elegance in dressing is required (from smart casual to business)for the perfect match.

Glorious, fresh, smoky, woody fragrance. It has a wonderful sweetness to it also. No bitterness from oakmoss in this. Price-wise, no cheaper to get than Aventus where I live. They do smell similar. Very, very nice Micallef!

After purchasing a sample from lucky scent it was clear to me that this fragrance had a place in my collection. This may be similar to Creed Aventus, but its not the same. The first time i smelled Aventus i was not interested at all. It reminded me of Escada Sentiment which gave me headaches for some reason. But when i smelled Royal Vintage for the first time i immediately loved it.
To me Royal Vintage brings a more elegant and subtle approach to an otherwise overwhelming combination of notes . Royal Vintage fragrance just smells better to me. With that being said, at this point, I don’t think I have smelled a better fragrance period. Yes, I could complain that the longevity is not as good as Aventus but, Its good enough to last through most of a work day 6-8 hours. Still its worthy enough to receive a perfect score in my book.
    10/10
Edit: Longevity over the time I have had this one is just ok. Spray a little more than you normally would and you’ll get a pretty good longevity.

  37. :

    5 out of 5

Royal Vintage is a very attractive fragrance. Yes, it has some similarities with Aventus, but it’s not properly a “clone” or “Something like”, it’s different. Royal Vintage is more dry than Aventus. In my opinion this is a beautiful scent. It doesn’t substitute aventus, you can have both in your collection. If you don’t wont to own both, i suggest to try both an than make your decision.
Good sillage and longevity, i can dectect the smell after 7-8 Hr (but, of course, it may change on a different skin, so try it).
It’s a perfect spring- summer (especially summer evenings) scent. But it works well also during fall and winter. I think that it could be a good office scent too.
    Overall score: 4/5

  38. :

    3 out of 5

The fresh start is close to pineapple, I guess that’s where the association with Aventus comes from.
But here is also a lot of dry smoke, probably from the “leather”. This kind of birch-leather is not my favorite unfortunately.
These to battle out for a while, until the smokey-musky pathcouli drowdown begin to dominate.
From Micallef I like very much Emir, Spicy Him and Gaiac. This is the first from the house I have to pass.

We talk about the similarity of Royal Vintage with Aventus; well, no one says that Royal Vintage is literally a bomb of cypress aroma, an overpower of freshness and firmness. Aventus sits on earthy scents, Royal Vintage is more dry. No doubt, 2 different masterpieces.

Qualitative fragrance, where dominant are conifer notes, in the background is citrus. I hear timidly skin notes: which is unusual, delicate, I”ll represent its in “green” color)))) This perfume is strict, laconic flavor- as a prim English aristocrat.  All the while I was thinking that “where I heard this” … and finally … I remembered – it is very similar to the Creed Aventus.

As a consumer group, we tend not to be very thoughtful with the reconsideration of old ideas. Theres a large bin called retro, and we throw used-up trends into it, repurpose them and then buy/sell them to each other. Bell-bottoms, skinny jeans, goatees and handlebars, macho tattoos, bow-ties. As for fashion, I can’t quite decide which is worse, the ill-considered use of jeggings or the deliberate exploitation of the bell-bottom.
But M. Micallef takes a more considered view of the men’s power frag from the 1980s in Royal Vintage. The long-lasting memory of the power frag is unfortunately the stereotype. Huge, loud, clumsy, uncouth, and dreadfully lacking in subtlety and self-reflection. The power frag was the logical outcome of the fougère having been turned from a classic into a muscle-car. What the fougère always had going for it was the weight of history. Suavaliere, unbuttoned guys from the 1970s could delve as far into polyester and disco as they chose, Paco Rabanne Pour Homme and Azzaro Pour Homme had their backs. Their cologne tied them back to a tradition of masculinity and propriety. The fougère got bigger and louder and brasher and memories of propriety went the way of the 60s business suit and pre-Camelot hat.
Chanel Antaeus, Bogart One Man Show, Krizia Uomo, Calvin Klein Obsession for Men, Patou pour Homme. These newer, even-louder, brutes called the fougère’s bluff and and went for broke. Envision the the fougère as a portly Harley Davidson balanced on a slim kickstand. The kickstand, the premise, the lavender, the last bit of gentlemanliness was effortlessly kicked away, and the hog fell dead to the ground.
The 80s became the age of the ten-octave woody delinquent that came to be known as the Power Frag, as in power fragrance. As in power tie. As in power lunch. As in power dressing. The 1980s was the 1970s with more volume, more cocaine, higher aspirations and not even a vestige of conscience.
Why would we want to look back to that era at all? Very good question. But you know what? The power frags were on to something. The better iterations, especially the original Antaeus and Dior Fahrenheit were spectacular. Arguably, what men’s fragrances did in the 1980s is what the better women’s fragrances did in the 1920s, which is to let their balls hang out. The key tones were woods and spices (and in Fahrenheit’s case, gasoline) Botanical, chemical? Who cared? Many of these fragrances were under-edited, and volume concerns (the era of the broken car alarm and hair-metal) were minimal. The power frag can be distilled to two attributes: woofer-busting spiced woods, and a degree of dryness that makes a classic chypre seem positively sweet.
    M. Micallef learned these lessons well. They both adhere to them and break them consciously, all the while knowing what the rules of the game are.
I was a young adult during the power frag era, turning 20 the first week of 1982. I embraced and embrace the power frag. Done well, it’s a sight to see. But I still flinch inwardly on smelling one on someone else. They became associated with a particular flavor of man from the era. His defining characteristics are vanity, extroversion, greed, anti-intellectualism, distain and bigotry. He is captured perfectly in the phrase (not my own) the Dicky Boy.
M Micallef deserve praise for rescuing the power frag. They have managed to cleave the Dicky Boy from the Power Frag and we all benefit. Vintage Royal is parched-dry, covers the full choral range and even beats its chest a little bit. And it is as pretty as Antaeus was. Antaeus’s secret was a tailored loudness. Vintage Royal similarly comes at you voice raised to the heavens, but it has perfect pitch, and it has a lovely invigorating quality. The woods and the spices match perfectly, and there is even a hint of the high-pitched octane of Fahrenheit. In classic power frag fashion, the drydown of Vintage Royal has a smoldering feel. The composition is predicated on so many long lasting wood and spice tones that the drydown, while coherent, feels like a summary of the opening. Same shape, same range, though not quite all the voices, but with an added smile. The best of the power frags had a little smirk to them, an attribute the Cool Water set stole and exaggerated to clownishness. Vintage Royal plays it just right.

Oh my God! This is so good!
    Fascinating!
One of the finest leather base fragrance ever.
    That is really royal essence.
Leather here doesn’t have regular heady and smoky scent that we see in other fragrance ( that usually combine with tobacco, incense, cinnamon and ….).
It smells elegant and relaxing. like being on a vacation and lounging on leather sofa.
The opening scent is really amazing. refreshing combination of pink pepper and bergamot.
Then earthy scents of cypress and patchouli join the team and give us a woody theme.
And finally we have smooth and pleasant musky-woody scent in base of leather.
Very masculine and comfortable smell. I enjoy from every moment of smelling this fragrance on my skin.
    I highly recommended this one!
    5-6hours longevity and porojection.

Generic woodsy. I don’t find this scent in any way unique or interesting – it’s very mild and timid – and longevity is awful. On my skin it’s gone within the hour.

I can definitely see the parallels between Royal Vintage and Aventus, seeing as they are both ostensibly warm spicy woody fragrances rounded out by some acidic fruits. However, They are not so similar that one replaces the other, and I feel that each is deserving of individual consideration.
If ever leather could be refreshing, this fragrance is a perfect example. Bergamot peel, spicy woodsy notes and smoky sweet fruitiness all revolve around a clean light leather.
This would be a great summer evening vacation scent. It is soothing and romantic, with a very casual facet.
This fragrance is incredibly well rounded and balanced. It smells tropical, masculine, and expensive. Projection and longevity are excellent. If you enjoy spicy, warm, complex masculine citrus frags and aren’t adverse to a nicely rendered leather, give this one a shot.
If I woke up next to a man who smelled from Royal Vintage, I would be like, “AAAAAA!! WHAT DID YOU DO WITH MY BOYFRIEND!?”
But then I would take a deep breath of his Aventus, er, I mean Royal Vintage, sigh, and think to myself,
    “Mhm. Everything’s gonna be alright.”

A lot of people say that Fresco smells like Aventus…that statement might of been true until Royal Vintage arrived. 2 versions of Aventus are in circulation: The smokey version and the pineapple version. Royal Vintage smells more like the smokey version minus the smoke. This will not win the popularity contest but will garner a honorable mention when in discussion of elegant scents.

There is ‘some’ glancing similarity to Aventus, but it’s a sidelong quick glance at best. Out of the bottle, the opening seems familiar and that was where I found the similarity to end. This is more mellow, less smoky, no fruity notes of any kind.
That said, if Aventus was too much to handle, this will be less edgy and a bit more tame but along similar and familiar lines. This is much more woody in nature, and the spices and sharp notes don’t really pop out. It’s a good utility scent, possibly a daily wearer.
I know Aventus. Aventus is a great scent that I’ve had for a couple of years now, and it is excellent for what it is. You, sir, are no Aventus.

Like an old times hollywood movie star – as Sean Connery in James Bond movies – this scent very classic and elegant. Clean and fresh with a green and cypress notes. So so good!
