I seem to be In the minority of not caring/understanding Lui. Sweet and powdery are the first words that come to mind; it has a lot of neroli over an amber/vanillic accord which is way too sweet, powdery and dated in feel for my taste. Going forward, it changes to a semi sweet soapy, woody-citrus scent with ambery tones.

So finally I review my all time favourite summer fragrance.
Why do these companies discontinue such beauties . Honestly baffles me to extreme limits.
Very straight forward citrus woody but the beauty is in the simplistic creation.
Opens up with blast of citruses which fade away to make way for star ingredients cedar. Vanilla and other notes compliment cedar . I would say it is quite a mature fragrance with acquired taste.
Big thumbs up Rhossssas looooi 😉

For me, this was the one that got away, and I really don’t know how or why. It had been on my wishlist for some time based solely on the incredible reviews. Finally ordered a sample recently and purchased a bottle on Ebay after the first wearing. Unbelievable that this was discontinued. It’s fantastic, unique and everything that it’s built up to be. Read the reviews. Try it. You’ll want it. I would say that I am more impressed with this one than I’ve been with anything else I’ve sampled in quite some time. Tens across the board!

Today I found itand bought it.
It’S really a amzing high quality scent.
I can feel the cleanness vibe and neroli at top while its rich with woods amber and something deep at heart.
It quite masculine mature and young as well.
I can see why it is so hyped between discontinued fragrances.10/10

It is actually its Bison grass note -not listed- what gives this scent its sweet coumarin-like scent.

Lui was first fragrance that strucked me with it’s beauty. Usually I like sharper fragrances, but Lui is perfect in it’s citrus vanilla amber genre. This is almost too beautiful to be masculine.
I’m glad I still have a a few unused decants. Now this one is really sadly discontinued.

    A pleasure to wear.
The citrus opening sits on top of the sumptuous amber heart and it works incredibly well managing to mix a light touch with an indulgently rich background.
More of an evening scent for me as it does feel dressy.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS ONLY (to be edited): Gucci Pour Homme “citrus” edition.
Of course, I’m not sayng that both are the same fragrance, but that’s the image that came to my mind, considering I once was a heavy user of Gucci’s masterpiece.
BTW, same perfumer behind these two.
For now, 7.5 out of 10. Must do a full wear, thou.

80 EURO/ 100ml (no box, tester but with cap)
Lucky? I think so. But you may ask, why?
First of all, the price of LUI (100ml) on eBay it’s like 150 EURO and up.
Secondly, I bought this blind…and damn I’ve had luck, no joke! From first 5 minutes I kept smelling it and a ring rang in my head, I smelt this before, the smell when I was younger.
Overall, LUI it’s something you need to keep in your shelf if you are a true collector! I’m a vintage maniac but this, THIS…it’s something that made me think that I need to search even more the hidden gems of 2000s. (untill 2008)
Now on notes, so few notes…but damn the dark patchouli + cedar + neroli and with vanilla on background, LUI’s modernity , complexity and deepness it’s beyond everything is out today…
A STRONG 9/10. (About longevity and sillage, I’ll write later when it’s gone) keep in mind, I sprayed once on my left hand!
    Update: Longevity 8-12h.
Sillage ~3h arm long…~3h half arm…the rest 5cm to skin scent.
    Verstality 20% winter, 30% spring, 15% summer, 35% autumn.
Next week I’ll get UNGARO I, I’ll write about it as soon I’ll have it to my nose!

    Scent – musky lemon.
Season/Time of Day – I prefer to use this one in the warmer months, day or night.
    Projection – I didn’t get noticed, I didn’t get a compliment.
    Longevity – I get 12hrs consistently.

It is an adequately done fragrance and inoffensive too. Lasting power is amazing and sillage is very good. This reminds me of having on clean clothes straight from the dryer and relaxing in a very clean house. Sad this gem is discontinued.i am luckey to have two bottles. it is easily available in India with seller- unboxed.in.The price is very reasonable too.

I just received my 100ml bottle for a STEAL…and all I can say is WOW…IMHO Terre D’Hermes aspires to be this…it starts of VERY similar to TDH, but much more refined!! It isnt cloying or overpowering, its perfection…I dont care what the price is, I will always have this in my collection…its THAT GOOD!!
I now wear this daily!! It is just the right amount of strength to make it thru the day, receive compliments, not offend, and still make you smell your wrists at the end of the day. I love it carries the same attractive effect that vintage LIDGE does on clothes. You pick up any article of clothing with this on it, smell the collar, and you crave to put it on…I am stocking up!!

This is seriously nice juice. It is a frag which is like a chocolate shop. You actually think it is nice enough to drink. (please note do not try this),my girlfriend at the time of having this insisted I spray it on and she would kiss me on everyplace I spritzed the juice on. Being a man I though OK. well the mood was set, open fire, in the winter, the snow on the ground, and massage being administered well the g/f was in heaven, I was only doing this as an object lesson in smells and the ability to entice people into situations well… Anyway she started at the nape of the neck and said it tasted awful, and the next half hour was her trying to brush and gargle to remove the taste! That was really romantic. However form a scent point of view this does smell gorgeous.

Beautiful. Rochas Lui in one word. I had it a while back, used up my bottle and then shocker, could’nt find it anymore. Now I finally found my “precious” again. It has a sharp citrus opening but once the woody note from the cedar and the vanilla, Patchouli and amber blend in, olfactory heaven. warm, rich, and comfortable.
The only other perfume I feel the same about is Lutens’ Chergui. In fact they evoke a similar vibe( they do not smell alike) for me even though they use very different ingredients. I wear one of them usually when I am spending the day by myself and want to smell good for myself.
I do get compliments on this all the time. Good projection for about 4 hours and excellent longevity, 8 hours plus easily with 4 sprays. I would happily wear this all the time if it wasnt discontinued and I am trying to make my bottle last. Whoever decided to pull the plug on this one and discontinue it needs to be put in a straitjacket and locked up because they are certifiably insane. If anybody at Rochas is reading this, bring Lui back. I promise to buy it for the rest of my life. 9.5/10

Today it was time again for Rochas Lui .
I can not get enough of this and it actually looks like that Lui could become something of a signature scent for this spring and summer. It is a citrus – neroli darkened down by amber , cedar , vanilla and patchouli. Scent -wise , it moves in the same territory as Xerjoff Kobe and Kurkdjian’s APOM Pour Homme . I see images of a glowing sunset over a beautiful coastal Mediterranean town where a bunch well dressed men and women enjoying a long and enjoyable dinner.

I go against the grain. i do not like it. good idea, but the mix of sweet and citrus I find it disgusting. does not go in one direction. is summer? Winter? or what? …. I do not find too edgy modern but not old school .is a clumsy attempt to please everyone .but it does no good. patchouli and too strong, offensive. cedar and neroli at odds with the sweetness of amber. vanilla and lemon are a nonsense together. for me it is the equal of a perfume adidas or department stores.
good performance and ingredients .but not for me. 0/10 the worst smell along with bvlgari black and givenchy play intense.

I was so lucky to find a 50ml bottle of Lui Rochas. This UNBELIEVABLY SEXY juice has a sweet creamy vib of amber, vanilla and patucchli. Neroli really adds a floral aromatic scent making it luxurious. Both cedar and amber comes together beautifully giving it a sexy appeal to any woman who loves a woodsy/sweet aroma against a men’s body. The aroma is very refined which is worth having.
Longevity and Silage is excellent lasting over 8hrs
    Finally thoughts,
I hope that Rochas think about bring back this GEM which is very hard to find now. It’s impossible to find a real attractive luxurious juice of same level without spending over 200usd. Now almost all Purfumery have established their name some have watered down todays fragrance instead of keeping the old way which is a sham.
If you can find Lui, don’t hesitate to buy it…believe me you will enjoy this exquisitely crafted fragrance. 10/10…I can’t find anything that would bring down the quality. ♥♥♥♥♥

I realized quite some time ago, that I wear fragrance for me, myself, and I…yes, it’s a bonus if someone else likes or loves the fragrance I’m wearing…but quite frankly, if someone doesn’t like the fragrance I’m wearing, I could care less really — they are quite welcome to either stay away from me or breathe through their mouth if need be…anyhow, from my perspective, Rochas Lui is all about me, myself, and I…and we all LOVE it!

Just picked this one up along with Bleu de chanel on Black friday sale.
There was no tester available so it was a blind buy.
Frankly am completely disappointed, though the fragrance is rich & complex. For a trained nose this is very definitively a treat.
But in reality, it hardly makes any impact or produces a vow effect on a person sniffing it for the first time. Face it, no-body is gonna sit – stiff and analyze what u are wearing; it takes a second for the nose to notice and yeild a complement.
Bottom line this doesn’t get you there…
First 2 reactions from wearing Rochas Lui was “ok” u are wearing something- “doesn’t feel anything special though.”

God, I love this stuff. I don’t know enough superlatives to do it justice. Oddly, I’d never have purchased it based solely on the notes. Alfarom’s review gave me the push to buy it blind. The beautiful patchouli in the base makes it smell like a distant cousin of Habit Rouge, except you don’t end up smelling like a French whore if you hit the trigger more than twice. If you find a bottle, grab it. They’re only getting rarer by the day.

#ficusmusKus – Reviews are very personal. Comparing one dollar bill to a fragrance ( actually a very good quality fragrance from Rochas ) just express your arrogance and probably bad taste. Body chemistry also counts. Statements should be less “personal”.

After reading so many Good things about Rochas Lui.
I decided to go for it , I was lucky i found it on my usual online fragrance shopping store for 3000INR ($50) for a 100ml (Did i spend More??)
Being Owner of many Niche Fragrances, I would say i was absolutely stunned by the Quality of Ingredients and Fine Blending.
Unique , Clean and what a Gentlemen’s Fragrance.
Cant wait for Winters to wear this Masterpiece.
P.S. I am in India and got it from Unboxed. In and in India its Available on Ebay for 9000 INR($150) , on Amazon for 4000 (~$60)

Just to follow up on my previous review…love this fragrance so much that I decided to buy another large bottle just in case it becomes really scarce and the cost then becomes ridiculous…Rochas Lui is a beautifully blended masterpiece…at times it truly is utterly compelling…completely agree with alfarom in his comments on this fragrance, “When I smell something like Rochas Lui I understand why I love fragrance.”
    ROCHAS LUI = UNIQUELY GORGEOUS

Decided to buy this after reading the many glowing comments here and I have to say that I can’t believe how much I LOVE LUI. Gorgeously blended clean fragrance that I can’t seem to keep my nose from. Probably one of the best ever fragrance purchases I will make based solely on the comments of others I’ve never met. A big thank you firstly to the house of Rochas and then to “alfarom” for his honest and spot-on comments on Rochas Lui.
    I really do LOVE LUI.

    English:
When you feel it immediately went to my childhood, amid the rustic, bearded, serious and always had a life story to tell my family men. Why did I feel it! I do not know, I can not answer, it was automatic to feel what I felt. Well, Lui de Rochas tears are an independent man sitting at a bar in Palermo, Buenos Aires table, enjoying an Argentine tango in front, where the rustle of the bodies of the dancers can be seen to play out the music on a floor of rustic wood. This man is alone and drinks ancient Scottish Whisky, trying to drown a heartache of a failed romance, is apparently well dressed, bearded recently made and aftershave of the most genuine you are using a citrus cologne pulled closed and the aroma of bitter Lemon. How to strip like he enjoys fresh Asiago cheese and cigar smoke of herbs. Rocks in my nostrils Lui presents exactly like the scenario that an inexpert attempt I set out to describe the above lines. Lemon is pure means amargado washing a log of a large old cedar, sweet and dense environment by chance worked hyper, ie, what was to be an inaccuracy ended a sure guarantee. I will not delve on their attachment and projection, because it has left me dizzy, as a feeling of drunkenness, while uncomfortable, is pleasurable. This design blocks here and draws attention of those around and also fixed as a tattoo done well, the one that causes you joy just thinking, not only because it is hard on you, but because pride causes him to be glued to the body.

The world of perfumery is much more interesting and intriguing than most users can imagine. Beyond ratings as “citrus” or “wood”, “sweet” or “nauseating”, there is a magic behind the creation and the use of each note in the composition of a fragrance.
A single ingredient may generate different nuances according to its extraction, its use in the olfactory pyramid or its merging with other ingredients, i.e., it is possible to get from the same plant, for example, either an earthy tone, or a herbal, or a cooler, or a woody, etc. This also happens with flowers and spices. A single spice can generate nuances that are sometimes hot and burnt, other times raspy, sometimes sweet, other times creamy, etc.
Having said that, I dare say that this cologne has one of the best vanillas (if not the best) I’ve ever felt in a masculine scent. This vanilla dances between the creamy and the alcoholic, without being too sweet or cloying, as they call it.
This fragrance has notes of neroli, cedar, amber, Sycamore and vanilla. The final result is fantastic! An elegant aroma reminiscent of wealth and pride.
The only problem is that, despite being relatively new (released in 2003), it has been discontinued. A sin!

Rochas Lui has the subtle masculine sexiness of Gucci Homme I and the sophistication, class, elegance and refinement of a vintage Guerlain. What a magnificent Masterpiece of a fragrance! Very unique and incredibly beautiful, wearing Lui is an ‘experience’ to behold, taking you to another place in time, on an olfactory journey… Having stumbled across this yesterday afternoon it’s beauty has held me prisoner, captivated at first sniff… So sad that these mighty giants of male perfumery get discontinued but I suppose it makes them all the more desirable and unique, especially for those who can be lucky enough to source and buy them at a normal price and from a reputable dealer. This is a triumphant fragrance, I have a 50ml bottle which I shall treasure and use sparingly. Stunning!

RL is interesting to me as a point one notch more toward the floral end among woody orientals…almost like the jasmine (?) and honey components of Bois du Portugal had been amped up. The florals resemble the orange blossom extract water that you can buy at middle eastern markets, or the super-sweet, flowery Namoura pastries that are made with it (uncannily similar to RL!). There’s enough patchouli to give it sweetness but not sharpness. Generally, I think RL is too “confectionery,” reminding me of the ever-present smells of a candy shop or ice cream shop, which can be sickly sweet, even though RL doesn’t actually smell like waffle cones or fudge baking. I like it as a creamy wood scent, but the florals and honey make it too assertively sweet and buttery…for me it’s like a good cake that’s been ruined by having too much standard white frosting on it.

I’ve owned this great fragrance for a few years now and am only just coming to understand it’s greatness. This is a true masculine fragrance which, imo, is very classy and exudes that masculine feel of by gone days. This does not feel out of date by any means and would be extremely versatile. I would be happy wearing this gem dressed casually or with a suit. As a collector of fragrances for over 20 years now Rochas Lui sits at the top of my list. Class, power and quality.

Love this fragrance, one of my favorite scents ever. I’ve heard Tom Ford created it at the request of the French house of Rochas. Quite reminiscent of Gucci pour homme, Rochas’ Lui has this unmistakable smell of the men’s colognes made in the seventies. What does it smell like? Have you ever smelled pencil shavings? That’s it. But beware, don’t misunderstand me, that particular and almost animalistic smell is the result of combining cedar, pepper, amber and vanilla, which by the way, work very well together. Hopefully today’s perfumers could make more fragrances like this even when originality seems to have passed away.

Many of the classic men fragrances have unfortunately been discontinued or reformulated , i dont know if its a money making strategy by introducing new acquatic, bland watery , cheapo sythentic things or some thing else but LUI was undoubatedly an underrated fragrance , smells very natural and has some soothing elements. I will save the rest for rest of my life.
    Stunning stuff.

As usual, other persons described de scent very well. Nothing to add to this point.
I just want to say that there are 2 perfumes in my collection that I like to sniff the bottle: one is Egoïste and the second is Rochas Lui.
I am very happy to have this 2 bottles and I will use them for very special ocasions.
Indeed, Rochas Lui was made for evening. And I agree : shame on Rochas for discontinuing this fragrance.
Recently I smelled 1 million and It is simply has no class. It is just a cinnamon bubble gum . Nice to chew but not as perfume.
Rochas Lui has class, or, had class. It’s sad to say “had” .

It reminds me strongly to an incense mixture I like to burn from time to time. So what I smell is incense, styrax, amber, patchouli, myrrh and some wood notes on the darker side of the perfume lighted up by citrus notes, a bit orange and lemon, accentuated by the neroli oil.
The notes are well blended and the scent is far more complex than the notes suggest.
To me it´s best worn on evening/night, no matter which season.
Longevity is longlasting and sillage moderate to/on me.

Found 2 100ml sealed bottles at a reasonable price, since it is discontinued.
Probably the first and last 2 bottles that I will use.
When I use It, I will write a review.

This is my first fragrance review. Rochas Lui is one of my favorite fragrances.
I describe RL as a very woody and citrusy fragrance with good longevity and decent projection. The first minute of application smells very spice like Old spice but changes very quicky to its wood and lemony notes which are there to stay. The use of neroli is superb and vanilla adds a little depth to this fragrance. The fragrance does not change much after its application and remains almost linear for most of its stay. RL smells very expensive and is very rare to find today. I have a full bottle and would use it on very special occasions. I just love it.

God knows why so many good frags, not at all old or dated, aren’t produced anymore! Rochas’s Lui is one of the kind.
Bitter than CK’s Obsession and sweeter & darker than Azzaro PH, RL is a gem for those who love that sort of woody-aromatic, warm, masculine and powerfull scents. A perfect perfume for the winter or cold weather.
Few women will be able to name it, but all of them will like it – on you. So, don’t hesitate to spice an evening or a night with something like that. You will remember it – and she will, also.
It’s a must have for any respectable collector/perfume lover.
    A deserved 9/10

I am looking for GPH for a long time now, but to no avail. Got a bottle of dirty English, which reminds of GPH, but lacks quality of the discontinoued legend. Then yesterday, a guy in the perfumery gave me this one to try out and said that this is the closest to GPH he got.
This scent has nothing to do with GPH, to be honest. I dont smell any of the insense nor the red pepper which makes GPH recognizable and unique. This is a high quality juice, no doubt about it, since the longevity is outstanding. Composition is blended very well, and what is interesting about Rochas is that i can smell lemon even in the drydown (it than smells wonderful, not sharp but with a touch of lemon skin bitternes). Usually citruses fade away after half an hour or so, but this one lasts so long. Vanilla is dominant.

Very natural smelling but too simple for me, though if I was a fan of the vanilla/woody fragrance I might like it enough to seek out a bottle. Generally, I only like vanilla if it is in the background, which is not the case here, and I’m not a big fan of any wood notes other than a nicely rendered sandalwood (or a combination including sandalwood). It starts out very “old,” somewhat like Habit Rouge but not as “old lady” as that one (especially the EdC), though this phase doesn’t last too long. What I find odd is that it begins smelling very “mature” but then goes in a direction one would associate with a younger crowd. For this sort of thing (the drydown) I prefer Debonair by Smell Bent, which for some reason seems more complex as well as pleasant. If you want a “super cheapo” version of this, you can try Cuba Orange.
UPDATE: The above review is from 10/2012, and I’m surprised at how much I still think along those lines. When I first sprayed it on today,my first thought was something like 80% new Habit Rouge EdT and 20% Dunhill’s Desire (red bottle). I like the Habit Rouge more, because it seems a bit more complex and interesting. I can see the appeal of Rochas Lui, though, as it has the smoothness that some prefer. I generally like smoothness too, but in this case I have plenty of Habit Rouge, and I could even layer it with Desire or Cuba Orange, so there would be no reason for me to buy a bottle of RL at current prices. This is an example of a scent that grows in reputation over time, for some reason, yet is quite similar to an existing scent that isn’t very expensive. I can understand choosing RL over HR and/or Desire/CO, but not at current prices. I guess I’m the kind of person who often thinks “that’s good enough,” whereas others think, “I must have the best.” Perhaps that explains the price difference, at least for some people.

The smell is a little like “Opium Pour Homme Yves Saint Laurent”, isn’t it? Ok, I said “a little”!
It’s heavy and sharp, bold and mannish, (not suit for mild men and not for boys!!!)
I don’t know exactly why, but it seems old to me tooooo! Maybe these years perfume designers tend to make them not aggressive or harshy. I said “Maybe”!

very nice and very good parfum
