This has to be one of the most masculine rose fragrances I’ve ever smelled. It’s a truly gorgeous, complex and interesting scent. It’s an absolute must for collectors, especially if you enjoy old school chypres. Although this has an ‘old school’ vibe, it’s not “dated” by any means. Very classy fragrance for a gentlemen 30+ and best in fall and winter. Performance is outstanding.

Yesterday bought it .it ‘s really a georgous scent.Idon’t like rose in mens perfumes but this one is really well balanced which rose don’t bother .
At very fisrt seconds rose dark leather are potent and then oakmoss patchouli give it a mature masculine vibe to it ,the rose exist though .
Rose exist from first to the end of perfume life.at first dark leather gives a manly stunning smell to it which I like and exist on the back but in a tone down mode beside oakmoss.
Many niche scents today smell like this while Acteur created in 1989.I reach certainty that nowadays niche perfumes copy or get inspiration from classic fragrance.
    It’s a masterpiece of a kind.

My father have 2 bottles of this,i have tried for many times to like this but i can´t like , its a fragrance too old school , and for a guy like me with 28 years this its not for my age i think.

HUGE oakmoss roses blend with vetiver and musk.
This is an overly sharp rosy, vetiver, oakmoss blend with musk and slight bits of fruits yet it’s overly bitter.
    too strong citrusy earthy blend.

I love this scent, but if you buy it, make sure you keep it cool.
It goes off very easily, and becomes sour and astringent.
I think that heat makes this happen, and quite rapidly.

The dominant dark rose and woody base blend together perfectly and the result is an exquisitely unique masculine frag with a sweet, gentle soul.
    Heaven in a bottle.

    Oakmoss, rose, leather.
    Dark floral woody chypre.
    It last very long.
Though the notes have nothing to do with CHANEL COCO EDP,when i wear it ACTEUR always reminds me of the COCO that my sister had in 1990!
    Addictive!

Absolutely gorgeous, floral and fresh. Definitely unisex and could be more on the feminine side. However, I love this one.

A harmonious composition! Has rose been done better for men than this? It is special and I treat it like the rare masterpiece it is. The house of Azzaro is one of my favorites.

I purchased a bottle of Acteur at a local wholesaler today. It was an impulse buy because I read that it was discontinued, but as long as I have it I decided to wear it. To my nose, it smells like Azzaro with a strong dose of rose. I do not smell any learher in this at al but I do get a little bit of oakmoss. I don’t see this one in my regular rotation, but I may reach for it on some odd day when I want to time travel back to the 80’s.

I picked up this fragrance and wore it only once back in 2015…it was okay, but Acteur just seemed a bit dated (not that I mind masculine or mature scents) so I placed it back on the shelf and kinda forgot about it.
Well, I decided to wear Lagerfeld Classic the other day and noticed Azzaro Acteur sitting next to it, so I gave it another shot. Anyway, I’m liking it a lot more (it’s perfect for the cooler Spring days) and I’m glad to have it in the Scent Armory. I will need to wear it a few more times, and will update my review according, but it’s a solid like for me at this point.

Unique, delicious, medicinal dark rose scent. If my wife smells this she says she ‘wants to eat it’. The boozy medicinal quality really contrasts the deep rose in a way that is quite ingenious, invigorating and enticing. Romantic. This is one of my favourites. It shares many base notes with Azzaro Pour homme and so is reminiscent of the same era, but quite different, so smelling it is like discovering a really good cult film. It’s of it’s time, very good, but not canonical.

ChrisInBrooklyn, Acteur has been discontinued for the second time, this time probably for good. The only place where you can find it right now is on eBay.

There seem to be quite a few ‘Acteurs’ on the market these days. Is it still in production? Has it been reformulated & re-released? How to tell the difference?! Any clues would be appreciated! xc

Taylor Swift released an album called 1989. In 1989 Azzaro released this medicinal leathery rose scent for men. If Taylor were to smell this she would probably throw a superstar hissy fit flopping all over crying for the brown m&m’s to be removed right now! I pity her, not her money, but her inability to write a song about a great scent for men that came out in 1989, years before Taylor even came up with 1989.

This is the first scent I’ve tried which I would consider using as a signature.
It has similarities with Azzaro pour homme, in that its complex and powerful, but the flavour is very different. With this i get deep rose. Whereas I found pour homme a masterful scent which smelled too generic to wear, this is very unique.
The opening is delicious, like boozy red apples.
Slight soapiness on the drydown which is like rosey leather. The amber comes through also.
    Very well composed.

    La Tragedie D’Un Acteur
    Act 1
The Broadway stage actor wins the audience not only with his good looks, impeccable taste in clothes, but his cologne. After many successes, he is cast in Hollywood movies and becomes a mega star in the 80’s.
    Act 2
The cologne has won him more than his fair share of lovers, girlfriends, casual sex, and eventually a bride. Family life does not suit him as he has to deal with his Hollywood fame, women still going after him, a newfound love of money & materialism, and overworking.
    Act 3
The actor has turned political and won the Senate Race in his home state of Illinois. Later moves with his family to New York where he becomes Governor. During his social climbing, he still wears this cologne. He is eventually caught in a sex scandal and money laundering financial crime that ruins his career. He escapes going to jail with a pardon from the President.
    Act 4
He makes peace with former enemies, his ex wife, his children, but is an old man who has gone blind and suffered paralysis after a horse back riding accident. He embraces a spiritual life of New Age Healing & Unitarian Universalism. He is now ready to retire into a peaceful afterglow & autumn of his life.
    Curtain Goes Down,
    Audience Applause
    Bravo!
    Actor Bows….
Acteur is a theatrical Italian cologne from 1989. Quite frankly not that long ago but now a vintage classic, a fragrance from another time. Nothing, NOTHING in the fragrance market out there today smells anything like this. This, this, is a rich leathery spicy woodsy masculine scent. It smells like a million bucks and of such high quality ingredients as to be impossible to duplicate today. Acteur opens with the touch of Azzaro from Azzaro Pour Homme, some alcohol, and a sweet citrus courtesy of bergamot orange, green-tinged, citrusy, somewhat floral, but mostly fruited & spicy. This is a day wear scent for me because of the alcoholic fruit that sort of smells like a cocktail at a country club bar. The opening smells of a ginger ale, with a delicious orange flavor, but with booze thrown into it. Already there is an adult, seductive air to it. This is a fragrance of a playboy who is mostly active in the day time. He’s got money but manages to have time to play. As others have noted, besides the citrus fruit & ginger, there’s an unusual note of mace and nutmeg. This mace becomes pretty spicy and resembles the mace that women used to spray to fight off attackers in the 80’s (no lie) but not as harsh as actual pepper spray mace. Spicy for sure, but enjoyable, and pleasant.
The acteur’s heart is green floral with Oriental tendencies and chypre habits. This smells of a mysterious red rose. If you don’t get that rose note then you must be wearing the reformulation. The original clearly has a decidedly masculine rose scent, Persian rose, tobacco scented rose, spiced up rose, sexy rose, but with an air of exoticism and mystery. True to one of the reviewers on this page, this cologne evokes the Phantom of the Opera but he is not the deformed monstrosity and loathsome demon of the Lon Chaney Phantom silent film, more of the seductive but criminal Phantom of the Lloyd Webber Broadway musical. I actually wore this fragrance to the Phantom of the Opera when it played in New York City on Broadway. It’s a theatrical fragrance, which can be worn at a matinee although flexible enough as an evening wear scent for your tuxedo or suit. It’s cultural, intellectual, but not too much of a statement. Clean & woodsy at the very end.
Totally a throwback to 1980’s colognes and even smells of Broadway. One can smell the stage lights and the raised platform, the orchestra pit and the mix of perfumes and colognes from the audience members. A rose from a secret admirer promising fantasy and adventure. A jasmine and carnation are also detectable, but it is more a spicy carnation than a white floral. As far as florals go, this is a dry floral, and covered in patchouli and green moss of oak. This herbal, aromatic patchouli is made smokier with tobacco leaves. There is an incense in it. At times it wants to be a chypre and other times an Oriental. It’s indecision is magnificent. Smells like an actor who is taking on various roles in the same play.
A musky leather develops after the patchouli & moss dissipate or dries. Smells like red leather (red from the rose note) almost akin to rosewood. It has a woodsy air but it has more musk to me than wood. The leather is Italian leather of course. It has vetiver which adds a clean touch, reminiscent of glossy slick black hair gel. At the time I wore this fragrance I wore Tsar by Van Cleef & Arpels & Bijan For Men and I had hoped that this fragrance would be greener & more botanical, like actually being out in the woods. But then again this is not a low IQ, redneck, boorish, uncultured, shirtless muscular hairy chested lumberjack. He is a refined, urbane, suave, cosmpolitan, gentlemanly, seductive, intellectual and ambitious actor. Think George Clooney! He would wear this. Sean Connery. He would wear this. Richard Gere. Michael York. Liam Neeson. I might also add Daniel Craig Gerard Butler and Michael Douglas. Still, there’s something not too Hollywood about it. Even Giorgio Beverly Hills For Men is more Hollywood. Acteur doubles as a French chypre & European Oriental. It’s very European, Italian. It’s Azzaro.
This is a vanishing cologne we see less and less of. They sell as a reformulation but I would still hunt for the original on eBay to experience, even if infrequently, that scent that made me feel so ready to take on the evening of theater, dinner dates with both platonic friends and girlfriends, sexual conquests, and romantic entanglements. This is a great cologne of the 80’s that unfortunately is underrated but certainly not under appreciated. I don’t think of it as unisex in the least, despite that rose scent in it’s heart. It’s a masculine but elegant smell. Every major note blends together perfectly. It couldn’t be more perfect. Ginger, spices, fruit, citrus, rose, carnation, tobacco, patchouli, vetiver and leather. Ah, what a cologne. They don’t make them like this anymore.

Acteur is a cologne for the young actor who wants to impress during the screen test or an established actor during his big kissing scene with the leading lady. This means that while it’s a decidedly masculine scent, it’s not overwhelming, aggressive nor in your mouth. She can enjoy the kiss and the whiffs she’ll get from the cologne. I’ve often wondered why they called it “Acteur”. I’m sure there’s a story behind it that was lost to time. Released in 1989, Azzaro’s Acteur was a fragrance of it’s era and could be worn by the same guys that wore the original Azzaro Pour Homme, and similarly dark chypre floral musks like Tsar by Van Cleef & Arpels, Tenere by Paco Rabanne and Egoiste by Chanel. These fragrances were nocturnal creatures of the forest, a male version of chypres and Orientals, redolent with woods, moss, patchouli, ambers, resins, spices, carnations, roses, jasmines and dry notes. The scent is intoxicating and deep but at the same time it’s not choking your neck or punching your nose. It’s an elegant actor, it’s a fragrant description of Laurence Olivier or Orson Welles.
Acteur opens with light sweet fruit notes. Bergamot orange embraces spices like ginger or cardamom and nutmeg. It’s a strange fruity nutty opening, very unusual for a cologne that would have otherwise smelled of citrus. This is already exuding a spiciness and Oriental vibe from the start. The fruit notes dissipate and the frag develops into it’s heart notes of rose, patchouli, jasmine, cedar wood and vetiver. The floral notes are not to be feared, gentlemen, because they are of the dark patchouli type. Although that Damask rose can be detected and it does express herself with vibrant color, she is also submissive to a more masculine patchouli and wood, along with vetiver, all notes that are common in men’s colognes. If you are familiar with patchouli-rose scents, or rosewood, this is that kind of cologne. The flower are far from fresh or sweet. Rather they are smoky, spicy, dry and woodsy. These are not the floral scents from frags like Le Male by Gaultier, or Eternity by Calvin Klein, or even the floral touches in Versace Blue Jeans. These are florals that smell like they are burning.
The dry down is a gorgeous leather and musk.
This is exactly the kind of musk I like in men’s colognes. As a gender-bender I like to occasionally put on a man’s cologne to match my pant suits. The musk is neither overpowering nor “indolic/dirty”. It’s just a fine leather, like a leather on a couch or a leather on dress shoe. It’s elegant and glossy, like wood that has been cleaned up with varnish. The woods are fragrant but not too strong. The dry down is fabulous. As for it’s recommended use, I think this cologne is appropriate for formal evening wear and for black tie affairs. It’s luxurious and refined, but not effete. It’s very well composed and a scent that, for 2016, will grab everyone’s attention. I love smelling this fragrance on others. On me it’s just a dark Oriental rose with woodsy touches. Smells like an Oriental piece of furniture.
    Superb!

    Wow!
    Rose… very well done.
This rose reminds me a bit of the wild roses that grew next to my great grandmother’s house. Not the compound hybrids, rather, the single-layer 5 petal pink gradient to a white center as “rosa woodsii” or “rosa acicularis”.
In combination with the fine leather, oakmoss and spicy notes of the carnation this is a masculine masterpiece.
Gentleman this is not a rose scent to shy away from for fear of it being too feminine or dated to little rose soap balls on your granny’s bathroom sink.
Very sophisticated and elegant. Can easily be done in casual or formal attire.
House of Azzaro… you still continue to amaze me with your unique and long lasting fragrances.

A fruity start, abundant and delicious. I mean i would like to literally eat the top notes of this fragrance. Plums, grapes, medlar, dates, you name it, all smashed into a tasty mash. A prominent nutmeg note adds a touch of exoticism. French are never boring.
The star of this fragrance is the rose of course. She is chick and elegantly imperious. It suits her. I want to dance with the middle notes of Acteur. There are other flowers present, they are here to applaud.
Once our dance is over the fragrance loses a bit of its charm and aura. I mean i like the amber-musky drydown, but it does smell a bit cheap, and shabby, the rose is tired and neglectful….

Beautiful fragrance. it has a prominent dusky rose in it’s heart, and such a wonderful sophisticated bittersweet freshness all around it, very masculine and elegant. I compare Acteur to modern niche perfumes and find it… trendy – now rose is very popular again in combination with oud, which is good for both sexes. But Acteur is an extraordinary alternative for those who look for something less feminine, but sensual and a bit decadent at the same time. Very well done.

This does not agree with me apparently. The opening smelled oddly “barn yard” to me after that smell went away it seems it took everything else with it leaving a vague sweet smell that if sniffed really hard and close I would say was floral. Now 5 hours later and there isn’t even a hint of scent on my wrist. The bottle I have is a splash that took me for surprise when I opened it so I got a healthy dose of this stuff. I’ll try it in an spray and see if it makes a difference. I really want to like this one but it might not be for me.
    Update
Yeah spraying this scent makes a world of difference. Now it’s the aged rose so many have said. My guess is that the splash was just too dense for my nose. Now that it’s thinned out a bit this makes a lot more sense. It also seems to last longer around 7 hours of rosey goodness. This went from worst scent I have to contender for favorite

I’ll be honest, I was a little intimidated with Acteur at first. The composition feels older than a 1989 release, and until I was able to break the notes down like a double barrel shotgun, I was a bit drawn away by how dark this gem portrays itself. The guy a few reviews below mine who associated Acteur with Phantom Of The Opra, pretty much hit the nail on the head with this one. That said, I really like Acteur. It’s damn intriguing and displays a lot of charm in a clean vs. dark give and take that showcases itself around a shadowy rose.
I was surprised at the authenticity of the rose note in particular, especially considering Azzaro budget restraints. You can almost feel the texture of the dark red petals when smelling it on your skin. That coupled with the Azzaro PH classic oakmoss DNA which gives Acteur a masculine backbone that rightfully grants a men’s labeling.
I don’t recommend blind buying this one, especially if your’re under 35. Know what you’re getting into and realize that you had better like floral roses and classic men’s fragrances. If you’re not exactly sure then you’re probably buying for all the wrong reasons. It seems 3.4 ounce spray bottles of Acteur are in the begining stages of dissapearing. Buy now.

If you can’t stand cardamom like in deceleration d’un soir by Cartier then you probably won’t appreciate this one. The cardamom really puts me off here! There are better alternatives for aromatic fougere like Givenchy insense.

In the opening, at least for the very first 5-10 min, a punch of “tzuica” or “palinca” a traditional romanian strong bevergage made of plum hits your nose. Bergamot is also there but the tzuica is stronger. But after this time, the story begins…What. a. wonder. Carnation and rose, patchouli and vetiver, and the plum for the beginning (wich is not separatelly listed) are making a wonderful mixture. The leather, cedar and wood are comming soon, what a wood! A wet, alive, old wood, tones of leather and ancient amber and again the best rose I have ever smelled in a male scent! From the many bottles I had, the first ones (still have one full 200 ml since 89-90) is definitely the best. The new version is also good, but sadly far from what this masterpiece was at the point of its creation! I know the old recipe simply can t be duplicated nowadays, due the rules and restriction, but for those who wants to try it, it s a chance. The new version is a bit synthetic, the rose is a bit pungent and chemical, less oakmoss and leather in this version. If you know what I mean, in the old version, there is a MALE rose! I detect jasmine in the new version, wich in the older one I simply cannot detect. If you can, buy an OLD bottle. Rare but still available for decent prices. Choose a pre-barcode edition, -1989,1990,1991. KING!
    10/10

This reminds me somewhat of an ELdO fragrance, specifically Afternoon of a Faun. Like AoaF, initialy this is pungent and not entirely pleasant. It packs an unbelieveable punch and has you guessing if this is how it will smell later. There’s a dry woody acrid quality to the opening that persists and even becomes sour. At this stage you could be forgiven for thinking what is wrong, but if you’re familiar with anything from ELdO they often become sublime once the heart and base notes develop. The middle rose note is the payoff and worth waiting for. It’s dark, a little dirty and subtly gorgeous. The Azzaro line is so underrated and this is one of their gems. Enjoy.

I bought this scent based on the reviews here, and I am very glad I did. It reminds me most of Tom Ford’s Noir de Noir. Acteur doesn’t last as long but only costs a fraction of TF NdN. More importantly it smells almost identical. The rose and leather notes also remind me of vintage Aramis 900 more than the current release to Aramis 900. To a lesser extent it reminds me of the dusty rose of Agent Provacateur, although AP definitely more on the feminine side of the spectrum. To me this is a truly unisex scent in that it is equally appropriate for men and women. Love at first sniff, no waiting for the opening to subside. A great ride from beginning to end. I am so glad I took the plunge and bought a large bottle.

Excellent fragrance, reminding the spirit and the aroma of the 80’s.
In my opinion, one of the best rose male scent you can imagine. Dry and sober, alive and mature.

I love this fragrance very much! I bought a sample cause of the positive reviews that I read about this being a frag. that has a prominent rose note in it. The rose note(s) are hard to detect when first applied until the beginning part of the drydown. After that, the rose notes stand out more(at least with my chemistry). This frag. is the best one I’ve smelled out of the “Loris Azzaro” design house so far. This fragrance has very good longevity. I applied a little on myself before going to bed and the next morning I could still smell it. The final phases of the drydown smell similar on me like the middle stages except a lot lighter, almost like low end or dimestore perfume for women but in a good way, and that’s ok with me. This is definetely masculine enough to be worn by most guys. If it weren’t I wouldn’t be wearing it, as my chemistry wants to lean more towards floral and (or)sweet notes. This fragrance is floral enough and slightly sweet enough to lean towards being a unisexual frag. There’s probably more then enough rose perfumes out there for women better then this one. I highly recommend this for the guys, especially if you’re wanting something very different or a rose type of fragrance. Give it a try first by sampling it, and if you like it, buy it. There were some rumors going around that this is discontinued but that’s not the case according to another fragrance website. I would like to also say that I compared this with my other unisex cologne that’s also smells of roses called “Intense Oud” by Jovan. I like this one a lot better, as Intense Oud smells more feminine and way too much rose, so I’ll wear that once and while at home. “Declaration d’un Soir” by Cartier is another rose frag. for men. There’s one more fragrance that has a rose accord, for men. It’s called “Loud” by Tommy Hilfiger. It smells nice, not as strong as “Acteur” which I like better than it. I like “Acteur” so much that I didn’t hesitate to buy a bottle of it online.

You can imagine my surprise today when an early 20’s(Chris Pine clone)guy in my office asked me what cologne I was wearing. I said it was pretty old school, and I was surprised he liked it. He wanted to know where he could get it because it “smells like Christmas”. This is confirmation for me that I chose the right scent to make my go to for the Holidays.

It’s an interesting fragrance, very unissex for me, maybe due the floral and frutal aspects. I don’t know exactly which fruit do i smell at the opening, but there is something that reminds me pineapple maybe? The rose is not so bitter and not powdery, more a kind of rose that would be used in arab compositions. The base is more woody, sweet and ambery. I like it, i didn’t expect it to be that good.

just bought from Strawberrynet.com at good price 29$ for 100ml bottle. It’s very smooth rose fragrance for men but the strong personality of Azzaro Pour Homme also play a main role in this fragrance. The sweet note remind me of Quadrille by Balenciaga also my favourite.

I bought this fragrance recently and I am glad I did. I love the smell of roses in this fragrance. It is not a feminine rose smell, but manly, together with the leather and the oak moss. I wore it on Saturday night for a party and I got many compliments. It lasted a very long time on me. I will be using it more often.

so it’s floral…big deal…it’s also one hell of a scent ! Very unique, certainly not dated (although 30+)and very pleasant to wear in any circumstance (INCREDIBLE sillage)…nowadays i dare to say that it’s better (although 2 totally different scents) than the latest (poor) reformulation of the legendary azzaro pour homme (which i used to love)…acteur is for real, gentle, clean (and confident) guys. Try & buy…
I do have to mention…you perhaps find it sometimes difficult to find a right opportunity to wear it…

Just recieved this in he post, and sprayed it on a card, and all I could smell was.. yep you guessed it – ROSE
This is not a bad thing though; I then decided to spray it on my wrist to see how it developed and I was pleasently suprised.
When it was on my skin it turned into a floral leather based scent.
The notes of rose, and it must be jasmine really brought it to life.
One of the best from Azzaro – unique in is own right, and rightfully stands alone as a different scent.
Plus – projection and longevity are BEASTLY on this thing so beware of the trigger. Enjoy smelling good…

Clearly, it is not the best frag from the house of Azzaro – for instance, nothing comparable with that classic masterpiece (IMO) named Azzaro PH! “Other voices, other rooms” – as Truman Capote put it…
But it’s also clear that Acteur deserves at least a try! After a try, I’ll bet you will buy it.
For those who love the perfume style of the 80s and those who like Versace l’Homme + rose or some of the Aramis + rose, Acteur was (or will be) a pleasant surprise.
Quality versus price make it a must have!
    A well deserved 9/10.

If you are curious as to what a beautiful amorous dance between rose and oakmoss might be like – you have found it. Rose dressed in a red silk gown and oakmoss clad in leather. Maurice Maurin managed to make an uber-masculine fragrance using common elements usually found in feminine scents (rose, fruits & light musk). He manages to disguise them in a masculine aura. Thus, the leading actor – the rose – is able to fool everyone into thinking she is masculine! I don’t know if it was due to ego or daring … whatever Maurin’s reasons, Thank You! He strongly embraces the rose with masculine arms of oakmoss, cedar wood and patchouli. Other elements try to cut in to grab a moment with the rose but their appearances tend to be fleeting – like a soft aldahydic peach near the opening. But ultimately they get chased away by a powerful little mace note.
The other reviewers are so spot on when they say this is a masculine rose fragrance. The rose is a star but her dancing partners are no slouches – they are to be admired as well.
Although upon first spray this has a throwback scent signature with an instantly identifiable Azzaro Pour Homme backbone it is a fragrance all it’s own after an hour – That’s when it turns humid, leathery and more deeply floral. The leather accord creeps in slowly and nuzzles up to the rose for most of the dance. This fragrance is a ridiculously handsome dirty deep red rose with leather, amber, oakmoss and a fruit like peach singing lightly in the distance.
