Description

This classic Versace’s fragrance was created in 1986. The scent is sharp and warm with a woody note. The top notes contain lemon, petite grain, basil, pimento. There are cinnamon, cedar, patchouli, sandalwood and rose in the heart. Oakmoss, leather, labdanum, Tonka and vanilla leave a trail.

The scent of a man if there ever was one. Dirty, clean, primitive, seductive and sophisticated (well, he would like to be), he is irresistible or at least cannot ever be unnoticed…
An image from the film Barbarella: a handsome, statuesque dark-haired man swims in a giant glass bauble being macerated and smoked by the admirers/ addicts, that’s what this smells like – his fresh minty breath and his sweaty leathery armpits smothered in fresh but heavy lemon…clean and dirty at the same time and in equal measures- you know it is wrong for you to like him and his kemp carnation behind the ear, but you just cannot resist him and you would let him do it to you anywhere and anyhow he wants it, as long as it lasts an lasts and lasts…and some more.
Disgustingly addictive sex-appeal and bloody brilliant one-off.
Enjoy it but please have a shower as soon as you can, or at least wear dark sunglasses after your encounter unless you are a shameless (or plain dumb) teen.

The great masterpieces are extinguished. Those less … well … less remain in the market. I did not like Versace l’homme. An annoying leather lemonade. Similarity?

This is an ok fragrance, it’s definitely a powerhouse, but its on the lemon side, and kinda perfumy or aromatic, but fairly thick.. not a macho style powerhouse, but macho in a playboy WWF oiled up wrestler style rather than a Charles Bronson style like Quorum for example. People say it smells good, and I agree, but I like rougher earthier scents. It’s kinda in a lemony style like Giorgio Beverly Hills for men but without the patchouli, and instead, a candy-ish lemony effect,
I cant say this smells anything like Chanel PM. Chanel smells like you took a lemon and squeezed it on you. and thats it. chanel is very basic and light solo airy lemon. This is like a thick lemon pasty with rose and marzapan.
If anything its closer to Armani Eau pour homme.
Oh yeah, it does have a unique pimento scent like paprika or something, which warms it up and adds that unigue flavor. Its pretty nice, almost has a candy-ish aspect, with a some roughened dryness like a light touch of patchouli, but it’s a more damp smell that a dry smell. It’s pretty complex.

This to me smells like a traditional Italian citrus cologne in the mould of Acqua Di Parma Colonia, albeit the quality is not as good as the AdP. And that would make sense, since Versace is an Italian fashion house. I get some differentiating cinnamon. I don’t get any leather, not from my bottle which is the current formula.
The comparisons to Chanel Pour Monsieur are somewhat understandable, but the Chanel has a smooth orris underpInning it’s chypre structure, whereas the Versace is missing this distinguishing element. The Chanel also has one of the greatest lemon openings in all perfumery, as opposed to the lemon disinfectant smell in the Versace. The comparisons to YSL Pour Homme make more sense to me.

I agree with machoscent, you need to wait for the drydown on this one, too. Very similar to Boss No. 1 in that regard – huge, aggressive opening but a dazzling drydown that will give you far more complexity once the more subtle aromatics begin to emerge.

When I was younger I didn’t really like it, but now I think this smell is wonderful. A citrusy leathery smell that is very manly and attractive.
To my opinion where this fragrance shines is the dry-down. When you spray it first it seems a bit too strong, but just wait and once it dries down the smell becomes amazing, a kind of barbershop type of smell.
Some people compare it to Armani Eau Pou Homme but I think they are very different. This one has leather that is very obvious but the Armani doesn’t.

It’s very interesting to read the comments on here, as most of the oppinions differ very much from my own. In my country a lot of toilet cleaners from the 90’s would smell very similar to this giving me all the wrong assosiations. In my view this is by far the worst perfume in my humble collection and is a very risky blind buy (that’s how I ended up with it) I’m not saying women can’t wear this, but women can’t wear this.

I’ve bought it for my dad and he’s been using it for some time now. It’s a very good citrus fougere. Nice to smell Versace fragrance that’s not horrible. The only problem is that Versace L’Homme has the same vibe as Le Troisieme Homme. And it’s very hard to compete with Caron’s masterpiece. Try both before buying.

One of the best from the Versace line. Old school smooth masculine, a bit like Chanel pour monsieur.
Try to find the L’Homme with the thin typography, the bold faced lettering means a later reformulation. Still pretty good but the first formulation is much smoother

When I bought it, I didn’t expect this one to be so good… and it acually is. A citrus one, but deeper and more evolutive than his group’s brothers.
Compliments like “you smell good” make my day today!
“C’est dans les vieux pots qu’on fait les meilleures soupes.”
    Nice and class, 8 / 10

Revisiting this juice every spring/summer on signature scent level. Just makes me feel outstanding, the fresh spicy blending is as perfect as can be. A great example of the true genius that Gianni was. God Bless his soul!

This was my signature perfume in 1989!
It was a beast in those days… almost oily in texture, the most dense sweet citrus smell around… it used to last for 12+ hours with massive projection!
Now it is a shadow of its former self, the smell is not as “thick”, the performance not there anymore.
I understand that scent preference is very personal but I resent some of the comments made by some recent “reviewers”…
… in my opinion their comments are far from the truth even for the reformulated versions of today…
    For the current formulation
    8/10
[Vintage versions this is a 10/10]

just got this one since I wanted to try it and it’s not really that expensive.
When i first sprayed it it reminded me quite a bit like Armani Eau pour homme. It smells very much just like it. They are like twins.
This is lemon, a bit dust like some patchouli or cedar, and yeah it has a sort of floral rose scent in it, like a rose/musk. a fairly thick scent, and a little bit heavy actually.
If I could conjure up an image it would be on a Mediterranean beach on the south of France or an island, with a clear beaming hot sun and the scent of lemons and hot beach sand blowing through the air
Compared to Armani, this one is thicker, and less elegant. more powerhouse. Actually in that respect they are quite different, but still lemon scents. Versace is much of a thicker scent and some different ingredients, and a bit warmer, but on first use they seemed quite similar.
Yellow lemon and thick rose musk, some other stuff. It’s quite interesting and not simply a citrus scent.
    It’s nice.

7081B is my batch code, manufactured in March 2017. First time wearing this one in my life, was not very popular where I live. Comparisons from reviews are very far from what I’m smelling, so my conclusion is this has been changed a lot!. This on me starts with 30 seconds of the intense citrus notes but then, they transform in a beautiful ginger note. Not happy ginger, but very real spicy one. After about an hour, it becomes more powdery and flowery (rose?), and at this stage it becomes easily unisex. After about 3 hours, becomes sweet, and the leather isn’t there but not prominent at all. I always thought Boucherons Jaipur was the best designer scent for men, EDT or EDP, but now I’m think Versace L’Homme is. This simply makes you feel sophisticated. Don’t test it on paper, big mistake…..skin is the way to go. Masterpiece, at least to me And inn the current formulation.

i bought a bottle last week and i fell in love with it.
it’s a very masculine scent that reminds me of my childhood with my uncles.
they use this perfume back in the 90s.
    it’s a citrus-y leathery spicy scent!
a classic fragrance that’s been around for more than three decades.

Very good fragrance. It’s a very masculine leather EDT and does not offend anybody.
You may use it in a dayly basis due to its versatility.
I have 2 bottles (as I allway do with Versace fragrances)

I honestly prefer this perfume over its older brother Dior Eau Sauvage. This one is more potent and lasting and the effect is quite same as Eau Savage – citrus. But VLH is more uplifting for me and more lighter. I will buy this again. Love it!

I made a parfum up around two years ago and I thought it was fantastic, it was rich in sandalwood, cedarwood and cypress going by memory. When I asked a friend what he thought, he said it reminded him of those citronela toilet fresheners you get in public bar toilets lol.
Now when I smell pine, lemon, cedar or the likes, it’s hard not to relate to this ( cleaning formulas )
No worries, when the drydown begins it’s quite heavenly and worth the flashback horror I must get over.
I wish the opening wore down a little quicker but that’s just because it’s a little sharp for me, I don’t hate it, I just prefer the fantastic drydown where the sandalwood, cinnamon and jasmine start to shine for me.
The base notes backing the heart of this fragrance is also a nice touch, very pleasant indeed.
For me the opening…starts at 9/10 quickly going down to 6.5/10
    drydown…9/10 all the way.
All in all I give it 8.5/10 but who knows, A review re-edit may be in order some day in the near future, we shall see.
I have and prefer versace man but that’s like comparing chalk and cheese.

Well, I just got a bottle of Versace L’Homme today; a blind buy based on the reviews here. Yeah, you can’t say it doesn’t smell good – it does. I mean, who doesn’t like the smell of fresh baked, chocolate chip cookies right outta the oven?
My problem with V. L’Homme is that it smells too much like some other mainstream fragrances – nothing really unique about it. It smells like Stetson. It smells like Paul Sebastian. It smells like Old Spice / Night Spice.
Give me some Madeleines, for a change, please.

Well, what difference a few decades make! I purchased my first bottle of L’Homme back in 1989 when I was in my early 20’s and wearing mainly the sweet-boy scents of that time; Kouros, Joop Homme, Clairborne for men, and Eau Savage, Annucci, Antaeus was about as adult as I got back then! I bought this under the recommendation of one of my favorite perfume-snipers at Jordan Marsh at the time!It was pricey and different, and guy, but didn’t WOW! me, I gave that bottle away a couple of years later. Jump to today
(this day), I decided to re-smell it after reading here it had been reformulated with no intent on buying… well, I finally got my WOW! Masculine, warm, attractive but not pretty smelling!Fall, Winter, or cool weather and night time wearing mainly recommended! Repeating what others before me have said, but again this was a surprising WOW! given our past! Avoid blind buying, but if you smell in a store I think you’ll buy!Tastes may change, but smelling great never gets old!Just my two coins…

Gianni Versace’s masterpiece! A powerhouse of a perfume that is as unique and beautiful today as it was back in the 80s.
One of the best dry downs ever!

Very dense, heavy masculine fragrance. I mostly get leather and an insense/ potpurri smell which must be from the carnation.
Projection is strong this stuff works really well. I can definitely appreciate the art and the blend and I’m sure that for some people under some circumstances this could really work. It’s just not something I personally ever want to smell like. And I really like Tsar, original Paco Robanne, Givenchy gentleman etc. It’s not just because it’s old school but its certainly different. Don’t blind buy this.

My wife love’s this on me but she’s too feminine to wear it herself. Versace L’Homme is uber-masculine, and the moment a woman smells it she will know what you are wearing is neither unisex and definitely nothing she would want to wear herself… unless it’s to remind her of you! The leather, warm spicey, cinnamon notes in Versace L’Homme reminds me somewhat of another favorite classic masculine – Obsession For Men. VLH certainly has that manly vibe of most fragrances for men in 1980’s and 1990’s. Although some reviews here say this is for 30+, I disagree. This can be worn by any guy other than teens of course if you have the right confidence, attire and personality. Leather jacket, jeans, nice button down shirt, well groomed and a confident attitude along with a few sprays of this manly juice will have the ladies in heat. My 25 year old niece and her friends always compliment me when I wear Versace L’Homme, so I know women of any age will enjoy this on a man. It’s right up there on the masculine scale with Kouros, Fahrenheit, Drakkar, Anateus, Obsession For Men, Gentlemen, and Azzaro PH. None of those smell alike… but all are unquestionably made for a man… a real man.

I first tried this scent in the 90s, a blind buy from an airport. I first thought it was unusual and still do,but now having bought it again years later , have more of an understanding of it thanks to this site. On first spray I find it rather oppressive and that is just around the neck area and wrist. My first impression is of pine like sharpness which could be the ceder that I have read about here. This makes sense now and another member pointed out the fern like bottle design. After a few hours of settling down I think I smell a contrasting sweetness of maybe nutmeg /vanilla and it is very captivating and mysterious. The latter stages are warm and sweet and so far from the sharp pine fern beginnings. It is a heavy scent and very powerful in summer to the point of unbearable. I think it is better worn in the evening on a night out. I will keep a bottle of this on the go as it is a unique smell. Never smelled it on anyone else but have had people ask what it is. A strange scent but strangely addictive.

I am a woman, but sometimes like wearing mens fragrances, mostly because i like a lot of the notes not spoiled by sweet or frilly florals.
This one fits the bill perfectly. I dont find it overly masculine, that it would feel odd on me. I feels great, esp in cooler weather.
    Love it.
    Woody, and warm.
I havent tried layering it with another fragrance, but I think it would likely work well.

1984 Versace creates the costumes for Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale” and for the ballet “Dyonisos” directed by Maurice Bejart, both held at the Teatro alla Scala. In October, at the Piccolo Teatro di Milano, the Belgian choreographer creates a triptych danse in honour of the launch of the fragrance for men “Versace l’Homme”.
    – So October 1984… if you mind changing this little mismatch.

To be honest I was eager for this scent for a long time ago and finally I managed to get a 99% full vintage bottle from the remaining stock of a closing perfume shop. Expectations did not match emotions from the very first spray.
What I expected was an exotic, leathery and utterly sexy – as many Versace’s are – composition based on the iconic pictures from Versace house in the 80’s. What I got was a bitter and harsh lemony opening that stays acidic throughout the developing of the fragrance, accompanied by a sour patchouli-oakmoss-carnation accord, sooo old school 🙂
I have tested it carefully at home several times and also worn it on the outside so many other occasions and I do not get the vibe… for the time being… maybe a little further ahead this fierce boy finds its place next to me.

Versace L’Homme is a full bodied masterpiece which I use ever since 1991. The complexity is amazing, to me it smells like a sunny day in Monte Carlo back in the glorious 80’s!
@foreignshores: then better stick your nose into some nice lemon room spray, ’cause thats about as dull as your sense of smell obviously is. Also, do not put people down as snobs, who actually have a taste which does not agree with yours. But I have good news for you as nowadays they make fragrances like Ferragamo Uomo, especially for folks like you, so U actually don’t need much of an imagination and can smell like synthetic tiramisú and coffee straight away. How happy that is.

Versace L Homme is a pure joy to wear! From the opening to the dry down every aspect of this scent just is pure olfactory enjoyment! The green citrus hug you get from the opening is familiar and comforting. When I spray this scent it just screams; first steps outside in the green cool morning spring air. I find VLH to be that perfect A.M. work scent, but not in that I need to wear something grumble, grumble kind of way. Instead, this is more of like that; HELL YES I AM AWAKE AND IM GOING TO HAVE A CROISSANT THIS MORNING ON MY WAY TO WORK SCENT! The cinnamon paired with the jasmine give the scent a shimmery, fizzy aura almost like ginger, perfect for waking up the senses. The tonka comes through rich and sweet with a dusty aura of cedar and patchouli around it for a bit of earthy warmth and joyful, comfort. VLH is obviously more than just a work scent. It is far classier than that, but lately for me it has been an essential part of my morning routine like a cup of coffee. VLH has its place in any setting and should be enjoyed in the daytime with better company than just the clock on your wall and folders of work. VLH is beautifully italian, very stylish and classy. Rock this as you get that croissant but intend enjoy it on a park bench far away from deadlines and ringing phones.

    This is a magnificent fragrance.
In my opinion it’s a bit underrated (that’s bad) and due to that, with a low price (that’s great).
It’s a bit manly (leather), a bit sweet (vanilla and cinnamon), a bit citric (lemon and bergamot), a bit oriental (tonka, musk and patchouli), a bit flowering (carnation and rose), a bit woodsy (sandalwood, oak moss and cedar)….. and all the notes very well mastered across the different stages.
The leathery combo that I get in the dry down it’s of a peculiar type mixing the dominant leather melted with oakmoss, tonka, laubdanum, amber and musk. The combination is a real winner.
This fragrance is full of manly charm. I do recommend it !!!!

    A poor man’s Bel Ami.
And this, don’t get me wrong, is a hell of a compliment! The citrus opening may smell a bit artificial, but give this guy some minutes, it has a very masculine and bold character.
This small review is based on a 2002 bottle, hence, not the absolute vintage.

I found 2 2007 batch brown box with bold letters.it`s a very mature scent but among barbershop classica beside ysl pour homme it`s a nice citrusy leathery scent.so naturally according to its essence these fragrances are not soft and smooth they are sharp (not means harsh or cloying),resinousy ,citrusy ,spicy at first but after a while it settle down to a beatiful masculin mature scents.performance was good on my hand 7 hours.

@Shelleyan this fragrance had gone through massive reformation and it smells nothing the way it should be. Quality of life is changing so as the fragrances, unfortunately!

  43. :

    3 out of 5

I have been hard at work doing side by side comparisons and wearings of both the vintage (thin script) and most current reformulated version.
Ever since I got my nose on the vintage its been harder and harder to wear the current reformulated one. The reformulated one is more rough, loud and sharp where as the vintage is obviously more rich, natural smelling, and subdued. The vintage has a big dose of oak moss in the background that the current makes up for with a more prominent and synthetic carnation note, and as a result it’s more sharp, and has less depth than the vintage.
The current formulation has a beautiful glorious urinal cake vibe in the top notes that is unfortunately toned down in the 2 vintage bottles I own.
Performancewise the current is definitely stronger than the vintage- while the vintage is definitely above average, the current reformulated is easily one of the strongest fragrances I’ve ever worn.
All and all reformulations are unavoidable in the day and age that we live in, and the current is a decent one that keeps the spirit of the original alive, but without oak moss you’re missing out on a lot.
I have made up my mind to sell my reformulated and stick with the vintage.

I bought my first bottle of Versace L’homme the very year it was launched. I was 16 back then (… I know, kind of dates me now 😉 and loved its woody yet refined smell. I remember receiving lots of compliments and kept using it for a few years before switching to Santos de Cartier. While waiting at the airport, I came across Versace L’homme at the duty free and decided to buy it. When I sprayed it on this morning, it smelled nothing like the original from the 80s. I can still detect some of the original (which came in a brown box), but overall it just smells synthetic, so much so that I washed it off immediately. I was so nonplussed that I went into the attic to look for the miniature I keep in my collection. The two smell nothing alike. The new version with the black box is terrible.. Maybe the contents of the bottle I bought are oxydised, I don’t know, but I find the reformulated version with the black box so bad that I can’t bring myself to wear it. Money down the drain. I should have tried the new version before buying it. My fault.

This may have been around for years but it’s new to me.
I like the complex citrus open, after an hour or so I get one of those expensive Italian soaps. But once in a while you get the full luscious what ever all that is.
    This is one fine scent!

I’m wondering where the ginger note is in the pyramid, because every iteration of this wonderful fragrance has a bright ginger note. The current formula is a ginger beast and reminds me of Tabarome Millesime.

It’s hard to check this one without talking about.
In the middle of 80’s I put my nose on, and immediately fell in love with.
It’s a pure masculin juice with an awsome character, I can qualify this one as a concentration of the fougere perfume in a bottle.
For sure, I got the original light brown box and it was my signature scent for many years.
The frag itself is a subtle, classy, screams quality, strong and long lasting one, and very sophisticated. You can really smell all the notes shown in the discription and even more as it is blended in a perfect way.
This is a masterpiece, but unfortunately it has a vintage taste. Definitely for a mature people.
It evoques my youth and the good old days. It comes on mind to buy again and again …. Thumbs up
With all my respect to all frag community, negative comments are not justified, check it out ………..

This is a very strong, leather, masculine scent, I used it for office and I tell you it really made my days special. There is a slightly sweet, aromatic feel after dry down that really captivates. This smells like a man’s embrace, as if you are in the arms of a caring, gentle man. A man who is mature, gentle and caring. The leather is very rich, deep and exquisite, a very peculiar mix of notes stand out but I cannot put my finger on them, it may be the carnation indeed, the basil, and lemons. A very, very prominent cinnamon note stands out all the way through. There is a very noticeable musk and green notes ending in soft tonka to balance it out. I have to emphasize the leather in this is quite invigorating, a very pronounced, sharp, delightful leather. I envision a man in suit, well dressed with a carnation clipped to his chest pocket, a charismatic gentleman who opens the door for you. A handsome, confident, strong man īn a leather jacket, he owns a vintage motorbike and has perfect hair. After dry down, again it feels like he is holding you close, you feel embraced, his arms around you, then you just have tender thoughts thereafter, you do not want to let go of him, there is romance in this. It can be and is very romantic and very sexúal indeed.
Gianni was alive when made, it must have his signature of approval, it’s very euro, very italian, I would definitely buy this again. It’s very strong but very gentle too, clean and delightfully aromatic in all its leather glory, so leather enthūsiaists, this one should be on your list. A scent for young and older adults, excellent for office and professionals. It’s Versace l’homme’s signature male fragrance, a timeless piece for those who can and want to appreciate it. A must for the Versace crowd and those who love fine leather scents. This is not a citrusy or lemon scent, it is a very ”leathery” aromatic scent. One of the best masculine fragrances ever made, timeless.
Update- one of the best leather perfumes in the market, better than newer ones like Code, so don’t think newer perfumes are better just because they are new, classics rule, they can be even better and they are!

What a surprise ! Discovered that one while buying a new bottle of The Dreamer, I sniffed the bottle, sprayed my wrist and waited. Very strong bathroom-like opening, lots of citrus, but I immediately felt the oakmoss & basil hiding underneath. Very quickly, that cheap citrus scent went away and I was extremely surprised by the leather scent. A retro scent for sure, but a great one. I went back to the store and got the bottle for £20. Really a great purchase, very long-lasting, projects extremely well, and great scent. Definitely not something I would have worn in college for example, but works well for work as it is not cloying or offensive. Smells classy and masculine. Definitely wait a little before heading out, a friend of mine compared it to “something my dad would wear”, but she commented later on that it smelt really good. Recommended.
    Scent: 9/10
    Projection: 10/10
Longevity: 10/10 (lasts all day on me which is rare)

Finally decided to wear this after putting it off for a little while after blindly purchasing online. I tested this on paper several times and always got that vibe which so many define here as “Urinal cake smell”. I read this definition prior to even smelling the scent for the first time, so it was imprinted in my head and that is exactly what I smelled on paper when I tested it (often times the visual of the scent overrides what it is supposed to smell like, especially if you get it in your head that a frag smells like something, it’s really hard to shake that visual).
However tonight I re-smelled the inside of the box which I had sprayed a few days earlier, and I got a completely different scent which surprised the heck out of me.
What was that scent? Shaving cream! Good old school razor blade Barbasol/Gillette shaving cream smell, absolutely spot-on identical! Maybe my nose just needed a reset, as I did have a cold and my scent of smell has been off these last few weeks and only just fully recovered. But upon smelling the box and reaching a completely different scent conclusion than I previously had, I decided to make this my scent of the night by spraying some on liberally under my shirt and on all parts of my neck (this is what I typically do for at-home after work fragrance application. For work I usually only lightly spray the back of my neck and under-shirt/chest so the smell doesn’t become cloying for me/others while heating up and sweating throughout the day).
I gotta say, now that I have a different scent-image in my head as to what this smells like, I am really enjoying it! Forget the whole urinal-cake smell analogy, and just picture Barbasol shaving cream when applying this. Once you narrow the scent picture it becomes clear as day as to what they were aiming for when they created this frag.
It’s an old-school smelling frag, sure… but at the same time it’s still modern since the smell of shaving cream really hasn’t changed and plenty of men still use the stuff every single day. Undoubtedly this is an extremely manly scent since it perfectly conveys the smell of a man who has freshly showered and shaved in preparation for their day.
I might have come to this conclusion sooner, but I am an electric razor user, so I haven’t used shaving cream for almost a decade. But the smell I remember when I did use razors, is Versace L’Homme perfectly!

    Versace l’Homme…
This is a bold fragrance but at the same time very easy to wear and never over powering.
The top notes and opening always puts a smile on my face and sometimes makes me laugh it is soooo 80’s and that’s why I love it! This fragrance is pretty hard to describe but basically it smells like somewhat soapy and bright with lemon and leather and a dash of cinnamon… It is surprisingly easy to wear, and safe for the workplace.
It’s a very bright fragrance. There is something about this that is very uplifting. The first time I wore this 2 men asked
