Polo Ralph Lauren for men of Ralph Lauren

Share:

Description

Polo is here for fans of beautiful, eternal things. Its name awakens association with a closed circle of the chosen and this circle has its rules and traditions. As a truly masculine perfume, Polo does not contain floral notes, apart from camomile, which has more grassy than floral scent. The opening of the composition is green and fresh, made of grassy notes of artemisia, basil and thyme, with spicy notes of cumin, coriander and cloves. The heart is strong and masculine as conifer woods, decorated with notes of patchouli, oakmoss and vetiver. The base contains leather, tobacco and thyme, which create a wonderful, intensive trail. Polo is one of the two first perfumes by Ralph Lauren and it was created by Carlos Benaim in 1978.

The original Polo has been my father’s signature and preferred scent since its original launch when he was a teenager! Since I was a small child I loved the smell because it IS my daddy. Unlike my mother, who is an avid perfume lover with myriads of favorite scents, my father has solely ONE favorite.Though he has occasionally worn other fragrances he’s been given as gifts he always goes back to his beloved Polo. Every colleague he’s worked with or student he has taught forever associates him with the scent that remains long after he has left the room. Despite the reformulations through the years and new Polo flankers (that he detests) he insists on his green bottle that to him represents the ultimate man’s man, the ideal gentleman in every sense of the word.
My parents just celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary this week and of course he wore Polo when he took mom out to dinner in his best tweed suit. As long as I live the green-bottled Polo will forever be “my father” in my memory. Now and long after he passes away I will keep a bottle to remind me of him.

I see so much hate about this perfume…honestly i think its a very nice scent.. Not easy but strange and unique in its own way. Uppon application it feels dated but after 15mins or so it becomes absolutely captivating… Dry, piney pipe tobbacco scent.. Its firm, strict, mature and manly.

A true classic…definitely woodsy and pretty strong. Its a mature mans cologne and should be applied light since its a stronger scent, definitely a winter / Christmas season type of cologne.

my first ever fine fragrance I bought with the money I earned from a job as mechanic apprentice back in the days (1979), I was 16 then and I wanted to have a fragrance that I could use just on weekends, to go out with a girl;…………then I found Polo (green) the bottle had in those days a plastic kind of jacket from the top to the middle of the bottle (It does not have it now.
strong tobacco, pine and herbs notes in it; I loved it and after I finished that bottle I got another one; this was for long time the only fragrance I was wearing all time.
the family of power house is strong and remains despite of changes and time;……they are all beasts waiting to be worn by real men.
ARAMIS, QUORUM, BOGART SIGNATURE, POLO (GREEN), GIVENCHY GENTLEMAN, LAPIDUS, EAU DE SAVAGE, ANTAEUS……..strong as hell just for the man that knows his strength and power.

This one smells like the herbal potions pantry of professor Snape of Hogwarts… I’m sure Snape himself could have smelled of this: it’s STRONG, dark, overpowering, slightly repelling, medicinal and overall quite scary. It’s a dislike from me.

This is a good manly scent. I don’t think anybody will think you smell good. It will create an aura of old man though. I’m thinking 50+ with a limp and a beer belly. Definitely clean shaven, maybe a mustache. I mean, I do like it and will probably buy a bottle, but I have a few years before I get there.

This is as though the essence of “boring grandpa” had been distilled in a bottle. There is nothing interesting or attractive about this fragrance for me.

Just got a 2.0 oz splash bottle of the Cosmair version of After Shave. It smells exactly what I remember back in the day, but the silage is only several hours if that, not quite as long as the the EDT. What I really would like to know is in what respects does the “Modern Reserve” differ to the “After Shave” splash on, and the “EDT”? Your feedback helps a ton.

A classic as other people have stated . My father wore this scent so I have memories associated with polo original. It’s a heavy hitter and should be worn properly . definitely for a burly and confident man to wear . I’ve gotten a couple compliments from this fragrance and also love it myself .

Strong old school fragrance. My Mrs hates it but I keep going back to it for more. Not an everyday one for me it has a time and place and will last me for ages.

Awesome stuff. Bought a travel spray out of a gift set. So clean and classy. Right after a shower it’s on point. I think this is what Quorum wants to smell like but is harsher. Distinct scent for a discerning man.

    @paligap
Yes my friend but not the current formulation. Try if you could get your hands on anything before 2014. As a fragrance lover, I have collected couple of bottles (2009 & 2012) and in that process I tried newer bottles from 2015, and they are definitely watered down. Honestly I did not like any batch after 2014. Thats my personal experience though. Polo for me is a nostalgic era, notorious and obviously not for everyone. A great composition at par with Azzaro Pour Homme, Paco Rabanne Pour Homme, Rice Gauche… you know what I mean. Ballsy like Don Vito. Charismatic Godfather.
Huh… I simply forgot your question. So the answer is yes but only the vibes. Or you could say that they are in same league but different characters. H101 is brave, difficult to describe but I guess Prince of thieves would wear this one. If you know what I mean. I never got my hands on anything which was like this liquid. Only memories now.

I recently acquired Polo and its assertive piney aura and was trying to recall if it is similar to Halston 101.
If any one remembers Halston 101, or even has it now, and can directly relate its smell to Polo, I would appreciate it.
Halston 101 is legendary to me; I recall once sampling it around 25 years ago, and remember how wonderful it was.
    Is Polo close?

A superb fragrance with ooodles of character. When you have tried this, you will remember where you where – for a long time – that’s what I mean by character. It is quite a juice. Spray it, then let it settle and breathe in with your eyes closed – let your brain disentangle the notes. A special smell in our world!

Every man should have this one. I have had it for more than 30 years and i still love it. It is not only for older men. My son likes it as much as i do.
This smell reminds me of a morningwalk in the woods.

It was a gift from my cousin. It has a great longevity and good sillage. Smell was very manly. I don’t know why i was not interested in that perfume. Bottle was very nice. The smell chocked me a lot.

Still fabulous after all these years. I’ve worn it fairly consistently over the past three decades so I probably don’t notice the subtle changes over the years. This is piney and manly, not for the faint of smell…
Smelled a newer batch today (says “Polo”) around the base of the sprayer). Really nice, smells better than my 2014 for sure. A little more smooth & subtle…

I love this perfume but i did not buy because of poor longevity , surprisingly I found a matching Attar (oil) from my local store and that has crazy longevity .
The fragrance for me is 9/10

I detected the greens that people are raving about. I tested this in the department store, looking for something green. I smelled the grass, the leaves, the freshness that people are raving about. It has a nostalgic feel to it, but for me it’s…
Growing up in a catholic country, when I was a kid, some groups would have religious figures going house to house for pray-overs. One I remember was of the Virgin Mary. They give out some green cotton doused with minty green oil, and this reminds me of that. It’s not exact but the dominant notes are there.
This fragrance is fresh, grassy and pleasant, but I can’t go out smelling as immaculate as, uhm, the Virgin Mary. If my nose had no association with that, I would have loved this for everyday use.

The year is 1991. My stepfather. Semi-rural northern New England.
Weekends: Red and black-checked flannels with a soft pack of Winstons tucked into the breast pocket. Levi’s 501 original fit jeans. Brown boots or white Nike’s. Weekend stubble and a moustache. Mowing the lawn. Plowing the driveway. Lifting heavy things. Driving that white Chevy Blazer.
Weekdays: upper level bank business. Clean-shaven apart from the moustache. Three piece suit. Leather hardtop briefcase. Pocket watch – his grandfather’s no less. Personalized engraved gold business card holder. Classy as.
Polo. From lumberjack to business class, Polo.
Strong, green, fresh, woodsy, complex, spicy, serious, classy, classic. Some call it dated but I really wouldn’t mind if this returned to popularity, albeit people need to be aware that this is strong. Let’s not go suffocating our fellow human beings. A little goes a long way.

The opening of Polo smells like your grandfathers home made greenhouse: very green and grassy and herbal, of damp moss. If that’s your thing you’ll love it; if not, you won’t.

the first time I ever smelled this fragrance was when I was a little girl, about 4/5 years old. The scent’s first impression had deep sour elements of fresh lime and spices that slowly warmed up to spicey notes and became somewhat woodier with hints of sweetness, not sugary or fruity but a mild sweetness to it.
It’s the kind of scent a man back in the day would wear after an early shower and clean shave, the scent that says I am clean but well groomed after a shave and having finished combing his hair with those simple plastic combs from back in the day.
The dark grey suit and lace-up leather shoes come next with the tortoise-shell rimmed glasses and that handsome mustache neatly trimmed.
This scent was my the aurora of my father and will always remind me of him.
    Miss you, dad.

  26. :

It’s a very interesting and unique classic scent that’s worth trying just for the sake of your fragrance culture.
This said, I would never ever wear this. I can’t imagine any occasion that would be suitable for it and it smells way too outdated.
It’s not outdated in the sense that an older person (I’m 32) could wear it better. It’s outdated in the sense that it smells like something that belongs to a specific era (the 80s) and that’s really not compatible with the contemporary taste. I can imagine men of my age and even younger wearing this really well back in the 80s, but not now.
It’s not a timeless scent, it is a very specific to its time scent, and that time is gone (unfortunately, I love the 80s).
It’s also a quite aggressive scent so if someone around you doesn’t like it you’re very likely to annoy people wearing this.

I love Polo. It has a very distinct clean manly smell. However, this is one of those colognes that works with body chemistry. So it all depends on the man wearing it. This is great to wear around christmas time because of the pine scent. Also, if you’re taking public transportation, 1 or 2 sprays. This stuff is strong…

More reminiscent of Tom Ford Moss Breches than Italian Cypress IMO, and I’m a huge fan and wearer of Italian Cypress. It’s very vintage in that 70’s/80’s way, they don’t make them like this anymore. Reminds me of the 80’s heavy moss scents that I love in “feminine” perfumes (I personally don’t subscribe to gendered scents, at all), but perhaps even better.

Pine and fir with strong notes of tobacco in a very masculine way. Also woods and patchouli along with moss, and a hint of leather. I like this scent the most when initially applied as I can smell the pine and fir. Under drydown it becomes exclusively tobacco, leather, and woods. Moderate sillage and strong longevity. I’m just not that great of a fan of the scent – especially in drydown – the tobacco and leather kind of ruin it for me; I would prefer a more natural forest scent. I much prefer Encre Noire by Lalique for example, when it comes to forest-smelling colognes.

This is how a man should smell! Not a whiff of femininity; purely masculine, alpha confidence, haunting of nostalgia, an ode to tradition, mysterious, mature, handsome. Green woods and earthy outdoors with a perfectly subtle, dark hint of petrol? Ozone? What is it!? A brilliant blend from affordable and readily available Ralph Lauren.

This review is for my bottle of 59ml edt spray, produced in May of 2014.
Bought it early 2015, and when I first smelled it (on wrists) my stomach turned and I put it away.
A year later I tried again. Same thing. Then a month ago. The same.
Then, yesterday, I thought “F**k this!” and sprayed three times to the neck and chest….damn, it smells good! Wtf??
What I get is green notes, rose, chamomille, a hint of cinnamon (allthough not listed),
some moss and very little leather. Longevity is weak to moderate and sillage good for an hour. Then it becomes a very nice skinscent w/ soft projection. And it’s pretty linear. Need to reapply 4-5 times through the day.
I’ve heard that the new formulation is much better, w/ more leather and pine, better note-separation and improved longevity. I will definately give it a shot.
I have NOT smelled the vintage ones, and won’t be a snob about it when I do, and I’m definately gonna get me one, but until then I will gladly wear current Polo ’cause I think it smells good ;)))
    UPDATE:
Just recieved a vintage (1986) 15ml edt splash bought on eBay, shipped from Greece.
Wow this is some beautiful potent manly stuff!
Ofcourse different from current formula. Not totally lightyears apart, in my opinion, but definately better, stronger, richer and of supreme quality. Lavender, leather, tobacco and oakmoss a’ plenty….BOOM!!!
I will continue to use the current formula for everyday wear and the vintage for special occasions, until a bigger bottle crosses my path ;)))
    10/10

Before Snoop had his Johnson’s baby powder and Cool Water cologne, Slick Rick had his Johnson’s baby powder and Polo cologne.
And let me tell you the ruler wore it best.
Shower up, dust up and pony up. Smell like a king. A classic that to me is in no way dated. A drydown as remarkable as Rive Gauche, Opium for men and M7. Not saying similar but it takes you on a journey. I’ll admit I don’t like the first phase of this that much and putting your nose right up to where it’s sprayed isn’t pleasant, it’s the cloud it surrounds you in that makes people take notice.
Even though it’s been around since the 70s I feel it’s been somewhat forgotten.

  38. :

    5 out of 5

It is simply a CLASSIC ,mature, clean, strong but a common and dated fragrance. I enjoy it very much but I try not to wear this if i’m in a romantic scenario as it just smells too predictable and accessible.

  39. :

    4 out of 5

For me, it’s difficult to separate the emotional connection and memories associated with this scent from the actual fragrance. Polo is a deep, heavy scent; it’s a well-balanced blend of greens, herbs, spice, and leather. It can be overpowering if applied to heavily, but used in moderation it’s simply a great all-purpose fragrance. I think every man should own a bottle of this and Aramis.

This reformulated, minty dreck is a mere shadow of its former self – a grotesque reminder of what once was and what likely will never be again. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Thanks Ralph, call this mess PO-LOL and have this digitus impudicus.

  41. :

    4 out of 5

I’m apprehensive about bashing this one (but I will- it’s forthcoming) because it’s such a well loved classic. And that’s the thing about Polo. It comes from a different era when fragrances were bolder and you got more bang for your buck. But I gotta tell ya, this stuff is polarizing! You’re either gonna love it or hate it.
For me, the deal breaker is the strong element of pine. The pine-green color of the bottle is telling. Can’t do it. Coudn’t do it as a kid smelling this and can’t do it now. The opening is very, very strong and a little offensive, but it does dry down into something decent. Now, I’m willing to endure a bit, just a bit, of a stinky opening for a good middle and closing act. But this is too much! Yuck.
Am I advising you to stay away? Nah. Stop by Sephora (it’s a mainstay there) and spritz some on your pressure points. Then live with it awhile. See what it does for you. What I am saying is DON’T BLIND BUY. On the plus side, sillage and longevity are awesome, even the reformulated version. That’s always a plus.

true! i got my cosmair polo on my left hand and am wearing new polo.the old polo actually smells oudy-like and the leather is up front more so.i always thought the belcam replica was WAY off the polo mark.the old polo almost makes the new polo smell like a belcam.the dry down indeed shares most all the notes including the leather.both are beautiful though.i am truly addicted to this stuff.its almost like they have different distinct leather scents.i can find no wrong in polo,it is a cologne’s cologne.

I haven’t owned this in quite awhile. Was at macy’s and contemplated buying it. Tried the tester….it just wasn’t the same from what I remember. Smelled harsh and synthetic. Hours later after the dry down, it smelled somewhat like the old stuff, but it still (to me) lacked that strong fresh green scent.

THE King of masculine cool weather fragrances. There is not a shred of femininity in this bad boy. It’s rich, aromatic, and powerful. Those easily offended or wishing to smell like a lollipop need not apply here; you can continue to share your perfume with females. This isn’t a “panty dropper”, those do not exist. but it will sure draw in the ladies who are looking for someone with confidence and warmth. The rest is up to you. Wear this around the holidays, by the fireplace, in a cozy place, etc. Go easy on the trigger and be yourself.

Great fragrance for the colder months, reminds me of a Christmas tree.
Pine and Moss with a slightly dirty sweaty undercurrent perhaps from the Patchouli. Reminds me of YSL Pour homme as they both have a similar masculine dirty note. Polo is Pine, Moss + dirty, YSL is Citrus Moss + dirty
Macho scent but also classy, in the same category as Aramis in that sense. Will be appreciated by people with classic tastes.

This fragrance has a somewhat unfairly dismal reputation where I come from because it was one of those “gateway” perfumes that boys started wearing in high school but tended to outgrow eventually.
I only encountered this well into my 30s and I found it to be nothing short of a masterpiece. I would describe it as a mossy pine forest in a bottle, but that would be an understatement. It has remarkable depth and longevity, and the sillage is on the strong side. Definitely a cold-weather fragrance, but it won’t go wrong in AC-controlled environments. This also seems to be flexible enough to wear for anything from the rugged outdoors to indoor formal events.
(Another thing: To me, this is a perfume that smells consistently the same even hours after you first sprayed it. But others might smell it differently.)
My only complaint is that I seem to have purchased a bottle with a faulty sprayer that leaks. But that’s okay. This is worthy of a repeat purchase.

The majority of male humans who wear this started out wearing it in High School and have continued wearing it since. These particular humans are commonly referred to as baby boomers and generation x. The baby boomers were the largest generation on the planet earth. Baby boomers now are the second largest generation behind Millennials who call polo an old man scent. Combine baby boomers with gen x making these two groups the majority, the majority say this is a young man scent. So let it be written, so let it be done

This stuff can be great, and it can be horrible. If you use just a light spray on a leather coat on a cool evening it is hard to beat. This stuff can be horrible if you spray a lot, just a little is the only way to wear this.

This review will be an addendum of sorts for my 2 prior reviews of “Polo”. My initial review was negative, citing the pungent odor on a 90 degree plus day.
My second wearing on a fall day was much better, as were subsequent winter days. My second review gave a positive endorsement for fall and winter.
Over the past several weeks, I’ve tried “Polo” on days in the low 80’s, and like it very much in that range. There are some nuanced changes versus fall and winter. Primarily, the beloved cool weather pine notes fade into the background sooner resulting in a more leather/tobacco lean to it. Not as deep and rich as something like Pure Havane, but more like walking into a den where owner as a shirt with an open pouch of good pipe tobacco, and a good pair of leather boots that wear well versus a well stocked tobacco store with many brands.
Conclusion: Polo works very well for me in all but the hottest of days, works best from late fall to early spring.

An absolutely classic chypre that feels as contemporary today as it did decades ago. The pine/herbal opening is incredibly fresh with a greenness that has real character and depth. After about 30 minutes or so, and slightly before the dry-down, vetiver starts to make its presence known, blended with leather and patchouli. It’s at this point which, although Polo has no floral ingredients as such, I nonetheless get a subtle but very definite set of musky/floral impressions. Willing to accept that could just be my imagination but, to my nose at any rate, it makes Polo something of an enigma. I distinctly remember the enigma-effect when this was my signature for a year or so back in the 90’s, so whilst I assume there have been the inevitable reformulations since then, I’m pleased that the spirit of this fragrance has been kept intact.
Definitely one for chaps of a certain age such as myself, but because it still feels so contemporary, I see no reason why it shouldn’t have a broader appeal (it certainly used to when I was a 30-something).
In terms of seasonality, this is one you can wear all year round, day and evening.
Spray on pulse points and you’ll get 4 hours of really good sillage, gradually easing down to a skin scent. 10 hours in total.

This is the Tony Montana of 70’s Beast fragrances. I must confess I have a sneaking admiration for anyone who can pull off wearing this beast, but I could only wear this bad-boy indoors. Very green and very powerful – enjoy!

I am currently wearing this scent and it really reminds me of the original version, (I am indeed old enough to have familiarity with the original!). My bottle came from the shelf of my local CVS and the batch code indicates it is from October 2014, damn near three years old – 2 years 9 months 27 days. It opens really strong, smells great, but doesn’t seem to last very long on my skin. Sure wish I had some of the original.

    A True Classic!
Guys, don’t get caught up in the “Old man smell” foolishness… This fragrance gets me more compliments than anything I’ve ever owned.(Niche included). Yes, you are required to have a personality to be able to pull it off and it’s truly an “alpha” scent…

I wore it years ago and found it amongst other vintage colognes in a warehouse. This is just as I remember it. Today it’s an outdated ‘mature’ ‘grandpa’ cologne as some would like to label it but for me it’s a masculine, classic, gentlemanly, aromatic green chypre not too different from Tsar Van Cleef & Arpels. When you first smell it off the bottle, the coriander and wood comes through. It’s a strong green wood scent, redolent with lichen or oak moss, patchouli, cabbage carnation, musk, leather, tobacco. Classic ingredients for a man’s cologne which could have been worn in the 70’s. This was my dad’s cologne and I used to borrow it to go out on dates and to go to school. At the time it didn’t make a difference that my skin was fresher and more youthful. Cologne for men of any age was really more impressive back in the day.
Opens with a dark citrus juice, nothing particularly bright or flowery as in orange flower or orange blossom just straight up citrus with a medicinal taste. Before long the juniper coriander basil and chamomile and carnation come through. Sweet juniper never turns too sweet but adds to the fruit note of citrus. Later it becomes a woodsy patchouli and oak moss scent with all the usual green notes i.e. vetiver. The tobacco is noticeable and it’s not bad not like someone smoking cigars in your face kind of bad. Smells dry and like catching whiffs of tobacco leaves in a box. The fragrance is classically masculine.
It has a vintage air and one pictures guys like Cary Grant or John Wayne smelling like this. It has a rugged outdoorsy scent but it’s cleaner and more polished than Yatigan by Caron. Pine tree is the main accord and in the end it smells like you’ve been out on a camping trip but that’s a smell I like. Rustic and yet civilized.
This is a fine autumn and winter fragrance. It’s dry warm and masculine, smoky, woody, herbal and refined. I highly recommend this for young and older men who like green fragrances and vintages. One last thing though it does not smell of green pine tree car freshener! I can’t tell you how many times some people have told me that maybe the bottle I bought from the warehouse was not what it should be but I still like this fragrance and it does bring me back to when I first wore cologne at the age of 17.
    Good stuff

A 70s classic, each decade it is less and less like the 70s original, but for the young kids of today it is fine, they won’t know any different

A timeless & priceless masterpiece that shall carry on for generations to come.
Strictly not for teens who recently entered puberty.
    It’s for a mature & confident man.
It’s not suitable for parties & dates.
It is best suited for going to work or meetings.
    Cigarette smokers will love it.

This smells great. Its strong. And above all, its manly… Almost cartoonishly so.
This is what would result if you were tasked with distilling masculinity into perfume form. This is the smell of Burt Reynolds naked on a bear skin rug. This is the perfume that works every time … sixty percent of the time.
Its this almost-a-charicature-of hyper masculinity that’s Polo’s greatest asset, but also its greatest weakness.
If you’re not old enough to remember this being released, I’m not sure if you just need an extreme degree of confidence and security in your own masculinity, or a complete lack of self awareness, to pull this off with a straight face.
And you need to make sure you’re going to pull this off before you put it on, because you can be sure it doesn’t come off again at any point during the evening (although the pine notes die down within a couple of hours). Polo isn’t so much a perfume as it is a commitment.
If somebody in your company can’t handle this scent, one of you is going to have to leave the establishment, because the sillage is ridiculous. And somebody in your company is most definitely going to hate this – my girlfriend can’t stomach the scent, and she’s 41, so don’t think you’re safe just because you’re not surrounded by spring chickens.
If there is an occasion – outside of being completely alone or at a 70/80s theme party – where Polo is entirely appropriate, I haven’t been able to think of it. It’s most definitely not office safe unless you’re a park ranger, a lumberjack or a booze smuggler on the run from the law.
It goes without saying, that this is absolutely not a safe blind buy.
All that being said I am most definitely going to buy this down the line (up till now I have only borrowed it from an acquaintance). Although I’m probably only going to wear it once or twice a year, tops, It smells good enough to be well worth the expense – if nothing else just to smell the cap when I need to pick up my spirits.

My brother wore this in the 90’s and I just wasn’t a fan.
Sorry for those who liked and appreciated this fragrance.
Unfortunately I wasn’t into the traditional male pungent fragrances; i.e. English Leather, Old Spice, Halston, Brut, Polo (original green bottle) etc. For me I found myself heading in the opposite direction upon contact. This fragrance was both strong and sharp, very manly, traditional, too strong, too piney, too forestry and too green; Just too everything.
    Brut fast forward…pass :o(!

If you go on YouTube and search “Trisomie 21, The Last Song”, a video comes up with footage of a dance club in CA from 1986- 1987, with teenagers dancing to this song. Throughout the video, there are some guys wearing baggy
