It opens like a citrus Opium, but dries down more like Obsession.

Sweet spicy scent. Not one of my favorites though, but something that will get you through the day.

At it’s core this is a weird little synthetic scent, that tries to be fresh, spicy and heavy at the same time. It actually sort of works, but is an acquired taste.
It opens with a ginger-grapefruit accord. It’s quite “stock” in the sense that it’s been done many times over. Here it’s a bit spicier rather than zesty.
Green notes quickly join the mix. A bit of cypress is detectable, but it’s really quite non-descript.
Then the vanilla joins in, and turns this fresh scent into oriental territory.
It’s sort of weird. On paper this sounds in the area of Allure Homme Edition Blanche, but it really isn’t. It’s a deeper and darker scent.
It comes across as sort of futuristic. It doesn’t follow conventions, and sits in between a aromatic spicy and an oriental, in a way that makes it work in the heat and cold weather.
Truth be told, Dark Blue is really good. Like The Dreamer by Versace, it’s certainly weird and out there, but it’s also more mainstream in it’s weirdness.
Dark Blue suffers from the usual Hugo Boss complaints – synthetic, lackluster blending etc. But like Bottled, this one works all of those things to it’s benefit.
As this can be had for a song online, I can only recommend it. It’s one of the few Hugo Boss scents that hasn’t been woefully ruined over the years, and still smells very close to vintage.
Longevity is average – 5-6 hours.
    Rating: 7.5/10

I feel like this is concept based fragrance. One look at the bottle it is obviously aimed at the night life with being in the shape of a cocktail shaker. This smells very similar to Rye and Coke or something very similar to that. A good clubbing fragrance

I love how spicy and fresh this is. Bought it in duty free and it’s a shame I can’t find it anymore!

Opium Pour Homme and Hugo Dark Blue have some surprising similarities.
It’s the tart yet creamy vanilla, ginger, cedar and sweet resin.

In 2000, I used to wear it when I was a junior at university. It used to serve the purpose and get the job done. Couple of years ago when I was passing by the Hugo Boss counter at a local department store sniffed it again. It smelled generic and ordinary. Either my nose has developed or this has been reformulated. These days there are so many better options in the same category and price to replace Dark Blue.

Well look at this little secret. Saw it at Marshall’s and pulled the trigger. Someone below said “if you like plum scents you’ll like this” – a well trained nose! I think he hit it spot on. This is an effervescent plum scent – ignore the notes. If you’ve smelled plum (plum jap, bodicea glorious, dazzle) this will have a familiar profile. Seeing that this was released back in 99, I can confidently say it was well ahead of its time – although I’m
Sure it’s just the combination of notes playing tricks, I wouldn’t be surprised if plum were actually the main note in this – and has simply been left out of the breakdown because it would’ve been a lot harder to market a male plum dominant scent back in 99. Regardless – this is a real winner and I’m very sad that I’ve been completely unaware of this for the last 19 years. What a win!

Like Versace Blue jeans with a coca cola vibe, Sweet Vanilla & also reminds me of Boss Orange for men.

Hugo is just like Calvin Klein or Polo… red, black, blue… they all try to recapture that one 1980s hot seller. Jesus get an imagination. Zzzzzzz

I LOVE this fragrance! It’s so oriental, mystic, dusk, manly, cold and sweet feeling! I like fragrances that are unique and does stand out from the rest and this is definitely the one! I wear this at night in winter and fall for both chill and party.

This has been the first Perfume that I bought. I was a young boy who went in the shop and in the mess of bottles this scent standed out. I Loved it, I weared this fragrance for several years this and now I am back again to it. So mysterious, dark and passionate. I love it! Very masculine.

  18. :

    3 out of 5

I like Hugo Dark Blue. A masculine, woody/spicy base and a definite cola vibe on top as others are reporting. Specifically, it smells like ginger ale.
Impressive longevity and good projection. It seems like a versatile scent. Doesn’t strike me as one that would be a big hit with the ladies though.
It’s been discontinued but can still be found for cheap prices.

Hugo Boss Dark Blue is amazing. The three words I use to describe this is citrusy cola, woody and dark. The open is heavily citrus with a strong . Hugo Boss Dark Blue has a scent that reminds me of a citrusy cola like Coke Orange or Mezzo Mix with the grapefruit and lime mix as well as orange and lemon with ginger to spice it up. The scent is very woody with some mahogany seeping into the open from the mid and the cedar in the base. I feel that it also has a very dark feel to it, very similar to a less minty Cool Water Night Dive, especially in its open. That said, the scents themselves are different, rather it evokes a similar night-time watery feel.
This is one of the more interesting scents that I’ve owned. I honestly only get a handful of notes outside of the top notes. I notice the woods notes pretty noticeably along (as I mentioned before) with some sage and cypress in the mid and a slight vanilla base note, which helps the cola smell that I mentioned earlier. As I mentioned before, the most noticeable notes are in the open. As the scent dries down it gets weaker (despite having base comparisons to Versace Eros) which is a bit of a knock for this scent. The scent lasts for about five hours with an hour and a half or so with strong projection and moderate sillage before almost exclusively being a skin scent for the rest of the three and a half hours. It can be a day scent on colder days but otherwise it is a nice night time scent from fall to spring.
My rating for this scent is a bit of a weird one. I really want to rate this a love because it opens amazing to me but it kind of tops out there and goes down hill from there. It also only lasts about five hours so it wont last all night. For this I’ll rate this a 7.8. As I said, I really love the open, it’s pretty unique to my collection but it isn’t backed up to much with the back end. It opens strong like Night Dive but ends like a weakened Eros.

I bought this fragrance from Ross for $25 based entirely on the fact that it’s Hugo Boss and I really like the color blue. This is fragrance is rancid. I’ve never hated a cologne so much in my life. It smells like a bag of Chinese five-spice or something. Extremely spicy. I immediately walked back into the store and returned it. Good riddance!

This was dark and blue but it was a bit spicy. It had good performance I was surprised. Not bad at all but not my kind of fragrance. It just feels I’ve worn this in the past or this type is in the past for me. Projected well

  22. :

    4 out of 5

Well. this is an interesting one. I decided to get a bottle of Dark Blue before it tipped over from “discontinued and cheap” to “discontinued and bloody expensive”. I paid £25 for a 75 ml bottle and that feels reasonable value for money.
The blue bottle (designed to resemble a cocktail shaker) is a lovely colour and an elegant shape but it’s let down by the cheap and nasty grey lid which is made of some nasty plastic. And in a way, that seems rather seems symbolic and apt. You see, the notes are lovely – they are why I chose to buy it. Cedar and vetiver with benzoin and vanilla sounds like a perfect combination for a rich and elegant perfume in the base and the heart, with a few citrus notes on top and a splash of ginger. It seems like a recipe for a long-lasting, reasonable projecting perfume. It seems promising.
Indeed, Dark Blue does smell lovely, I’m pleased to say. During that first hour you get a little ginger, cypress, the lovely mahogany, cedar, benzoin and the vetiver. You can pick them all out and yet they combine to create an overall green accord. Lovely. I don’t get much of the citrus notes but that’s okay, I didn’t buy it for them, I bought it pretty much for the notes I’ve just mentioned. So far, so good.
I don’t normally think of smells as masculine or feminine but this one feels masculine to me. It’s nicely understated and I think it feels more suited to evenings and nights than day wear. I also think it feels like summer is not really its time of year. It feels more autumnal and wintery, possibly early spring days where there is that crispness in the morning air.
There’s surprisingly little projection. It is a skin scent within twenty minutes at the most. That’s okay too. I don’t believe that a perfume is no good unless it projects like a rocket launcher. I like subtlety and I like having a variety of perfumes in terms of projection as well as variety in different types of smell. So that was okay.
But then came the disappointment. The perfume didn’t develop so much as vanish. It faded away quickly and was gone within three hours, which is most unusual for me. Normally I find perfumes last much longer on me than they do on most people so I can understand the reviews where people say there’s nothing there. I even sprayed a couple of extra sprays on my chest after a couple of hours just to see if it’s a perfume which needs a couple of extra sprays for it to stick around for a while. It didn’t. It was a grey, rainy day with no sunlight and the temperature was mostly around 18 celsius/65 Fahrenheit so there were no adverse weather conditions either.
So what is my final conclusion? Do I regret buying it? Well, I’m disappointed that it didn’t live up to my (admittedly high) expectations but I don’t regret trying it and I don’t regret buying it for the price I paid. It does smell nice after all and sometimes it’s good to have a few perfumes which fade after a few hours because you can wear something different the same day without needing a shower to wash it off first. Would I recommend it? If you like the notes and you feel you would be getting your money’s worth for what I’ve described, then yes. If not, no. Will I buy another bottle? That depends. It would require the price to remain under £30 for 75 ml. It would also require me to have no alternatives in the way of oriental spicy that I liked as much or better. I think, therefore, in all honesty, that I probably won’t, but it is by no means certain.

I got this in 1999 as I was entering the duty free lounge and I loved the shape of the bottle a cocktail shaker. It is deep, it dark, and it is blue. Its simply sublime. It s very manly smell. One which i tak it was created for the millennium, like that fashion to herald in the year 2000. Full of exuberance and nothing left to chance. Smells evoke a memory and this just brings back seeing first light New Zealand, dressed way over the top with a COstume National Suit, with a Pair of Oliver Sweeneys Sohos on which were the height of fashion at the time and Viv West diamante skull and cross bone cufflinks, on a black D&G sheer silk shirt, sipping champagne surrounded by an atmosphere of this is going to be the biggest party and failing because of the rain and the fact everyone stayed at home. However I knew i smelt nice even if my suit shrank on Harbour bridge. It is the sort of fragrance that can lift your mood, when your girlfriend you find is cheating on you and have just found that out, however a lovely blue eyed blond says wow you smell an look great, can I buy you a drink and lets have private party to celebrate the sun coming up.

Perfect smell for me during daytime eventhough i’m lil bit sweaty person. The ginger smells so fresh at the first spray, and when the middle and base notes kick in, magical smells is inviting so many compliments.
So sad the Hugo Dark Blue wasn’t producted anymore.

Whoa – this juice is good.. !! Hugo Boss’ Dark Blue is not to be overlooked. For those of you who like the aromatic citrus blends (myself included), you will love Hugo Boss’ Dark Blue. Out of the bottle, you get the cool pleasant blend of aromatic and citrus notes with a background of vetiver – it is in there and I like it.. While geared more for Spring and Summer wear, there is sufficient diversity of notes to allow wear for most occasions and across seasons. Definitely office safe, but refined enough to engage in more formal events. Much to my surprise, performance is above average. Today, I found that Dark Blue lasted comfortably 5-6 hours and even longer on clothing – still going strong at the 8th hour on the cuff of my sleeve. The projection/sillage is average at about arm’s length until settling close to skin level around hour six. In my opinion, the price/value is good for this “best kept secret” for Spring/Summer wear. All said, my final tally for Dark Blue is 4.1 stars out of 5. If you are in search for a little known citrus aromatic fragrance that is underrated, I highly recommend adding Dark Blue to your collection. Enjoy your day and happy fragrance hunting…

A nice dark fruity/vanilla fragrance. The name “Dark Blue” is quite apt somehow. Longevity and silage are good. Reminds me, a little, of a mix between Obsession Night and Elements Aqua. I like this one.

I am a very big fan of vanilla notes, but the way vanilla is mixed up with the ginger, vetiver and cedar woody notes in this cologne just makes it repelling to me…

    Longetivity is pretty fine unfortunately

Been wearing this for approx. a month.
A subtle soft yet touch of sharp scent. I personally like this one a lot, but I didn’t notice it being an attention grabbing type of scent.
Maybe it varies with some but it seemed that it’s soft enough that you can smell and its nice but not as unique or strong enough to make someone stop and ask what you’re wearing.
This seems to be a trend with Hugo Boss fragrances ( exception of Boss Bottled )
It’s like Hugo by Hugo Boss… you smell it, its nice but its not as out there enough to make you wonder about it.
I definitely recommend picking up a bottle if you see it, its definitely good to have, but don’t expect anything extraordinary.

    Very special and underestimated scent.
at first spay you get these usual orange, grapefruit, lemon and lime, not somthing interesting.
BUT! it’s dry is very how i call it ? fairy tale or fantasy scent. i think it’s one of the most unique scent ever and probably the best from HUGO. the only absence it’s the Longevity wich is not the best…for me? A Masterpiece!

An agreeable fruity fragrance. Similar to Hugo by Hugo Boss. It’s nice in a thickly sweet way, though I can’t smell the fresh spicy note. Not the kind of scent I’d wear every day because of the rather synthetic fruitiness, but I can appreciate wearing it from time to time, like every other weekend.

Normally, I’m not a fan of fragrances from Hugo Boss House, not because of the fragrances, but the fact that they never last on my skin. And, according to my knowledge, this happens to many people.
As much as I understand and defend the theory that lasting is personal and not transferable, still, when many people around the world are demanding the same things about a particular fragrance, it is a sign that this is a common problem in the composition or in manufacturing. Fortunately, that didn’t happen with this one. On the contrary, it projects and, above all, lasts very well, like Boss Intense, being the latter feminine.
Talking about the aroma, I feel much of the citrus notes in the output, with the exception of a slight touch of ginger. The heart, floral and woody containing mahogany, cypress, geranium and csage, pleases me very much and is very noticeable. This heart brings more woods and a very light creaminess that makes this fragrance a creamy-woody type, because of its notes of patchouli, vetiver and cedar, wrapped in benzoin, tobacco and vanilla.
In my opinion, a great cologne who looks good in any situation and temperature. It is the proof that every rule has its exception!

Hugo Dark Blue is not my cup of tea, at all. I usually enjoy ginger dominant fragrances, so I am a little taken aback by my distaste for this scent.
This fragrance’s opening is rather medicinal and strong. It’s not fresh but it is unique. Hugo Dark Blue is definitely a masculine fragrance. I think a woman would find this scent difficult to wear.
I believe that there has been some rumours concerning this fragrance’s discontinuation. If that is true, I’m not surprised. If anything, Hugo Dark Blue is an acquired taste. The ginger note is dry and herbal, with cedar, cypress, vetiver and sage adding to that thick herbaceous quality.
I honestly wouldn’t be too pleased if a partner of mine began wearing Hugo Dark Blue. To my nose, this fragrance is rather unpleasant. As much as I hate to say it, it smells a bit like vomit, at least in my opinion. This could have something to do with the fact that whenever I’m feeling ill, I make myself a ginger, orange and celery smoothie to boost my immunity. The taste isn’t great, and neither is the smell.
On a more positive note, Hugo Dark Blue has good projection and excellent longevity. I’ll conclude by saying that it’s important to try this fragrance before buying it on impulse.

doesnt say ANYTHING! I wouldnt put my name on it if I was Hugo. Although ppl compare this to other Boss fragrances when theydidnt make this to compete with the others anyway. This was just as a sporty scent or ginger/aquatic scent. Im very selective with summer/aquatic fragrances because most are typical, generic, synthetic or smell like the rest. I have over 90 fragrances in my roster. This one was given to me because they hated it and i took it in to try it or use this one as a work fragrance to not use up my good stuff but quite frankly upon trying this, im a little skeptical to wear this since i dont want ppl associating me with this. its such a mundane scent and the ginger aint special in this. worse, the dry down reminds me of Perry Ellis which i hate. I love Perry Ellis Night though 🙂 for some strange reson its called Night when it smells like a great summer, clean, day fragrance 🙂

    Got this for my birthday.
    Guess what, I’m very disappointed!
This smells far too synthetic and does neither last or project. I like Boss bottled a lot more than this since it smells more natural and last much longer.
If you want an expensive air freshener which smells spicy and sweet, then this is your fragrance. I don’t know what to do with my 75 ml bottle. Perhaps I can save it as a memory of my birthday or use it when I’m going outside for a short while.

”The worst tragedy for a poet is to be admired through being misunderstood.”
Hugo Dark Blue Is seductive, dangerous, intoxicating, and mysterious.
With a citrus opening and spicy mid, the base brings out the fresh warmth that makes Hugo Dark Blue the devilish potion that its meant to be.
With an elusive suede note, Hugo Dark Blue can somewhat be an alternative to the master piece that was Donna Karan Fuel.
You have to either be a bad boy or the stimulating, captivating, engaging, conversationalist, with mysterious undertones to pull this off. Think of Brandon Lee reciting ”The Sheltering Sky” in his last interview.
If you’re into Woody, spicy and fresh scents then perhaps you should give Hugo Dark Blue a try.
Silage is moderate and longevity is fair. I get 6-8 hours the most.
All year round fragrance. Works beautifully in chilled and relaxed temperatures. I can assure you, ladies love this stuff.

I had this some years ago, but they stopped selling it entirely where I live. Then I stumbled upon a good offer on eBay and bought it, just to smell it once again. I immediately remembered the smell and the good memories that came along with it. To me, it get’s better after about an hour, when the top notes settle down.
Longevity and sillage are good, but Hugo Boss never dissapointed me in those areas.

It has what I call a chemical/syrupy quality (similar to Joop! Jump Summer Temptation). but if that doesn’t bother you the spiciness is nice, and it feels like a marine note is in here too. After this faded I got very little, but it was only a dab sampling. When I wear it normally I’ll update this review.
UPDATE: Sampling on cloth and I get a lot of spiciness, a powdery element, a little sweetness, perhaps a hint of woods, and still a kind of syrupy or creamy quality. It smells good but my fear is that it will smell synthetic when I wear it normally so I’ll report back when I do that.

I like it. I dont love it. It’s sweet, and with the listen notes, I dont see how it really could be as sweet as it is. I was hoping for a ginger, woody, citrus scent and it’s darker and deeper than that. the orange is very pronounced in the beginning giving it a sweet/citrus and ginger opening, then it settles into an almost candy-like wood scent that lasts a good while. It is subtle but not strictly a skin scent. It leaves a slightly spicy/musky/woody trail in the drydown that is my favorite part. I would definitely recommend this to be worn at night, in a casual setting for the summer or fall and winter would be ideal for a warm but light scent.

  60. :

A very strong and masculine scent, that’s perfect for evenings and formal wear. It worked on my skin, however mileage varies (as the comments here indicate), and it might not be for you…it’s of very acquired taste.
I remember that projection and longevity was huge (at least on the splash-on cologne), as well.

Hugo Boss Dark Blue is a fragrance rich in nuance, in the opening with the surprising freshness of citrus fruits: grapefruit on all that ginger seems to dance to a waltz by Strauss. In the middle the wood of mahogany, with geranium and sage blend in a clean heart and generous (perhaps the most sublime) but the bottom is not far behind (wood and resin) give a tone mixed with the classic avant-garde.
This I believe is one of the best fragrances I have ever heard, the first spray it is hit by a sweetness that accompanies us for several hours … I would also add that in my opinion that it is not so inflated as originality is me Platinum Egoiste recalls.

Fell in love with it, back in 2002.
Masculine, elegant, fits well with formal clothing.
    9/10

I can’t pik what it is but it reminds me exactly of another scent, it
Smells almost identical to something else. I’m thinking something along the lines of Beckham Intimitely.
It’s starts of fruity spicy then the wood set in, that sounds familiar too.
I’m not saying it’s a copy, just racking my brains on what it is I relate it too.

i tried this a few years ago and was not that keen
it was rather weak and it smells like a toilet cleaner

I detect some dried fruit (somewhat Egoiste-like) up top, but then the base notes kick in shortly thereafter. As such, it’s mostly linear on my skin, but has superb longevity and tenacity as well as good sillage.
And here’s my dilemma: Would I save Dark Blue if the house was burning down? No. But each time I wear it, I’m constantly surprised at how much I enjoy it.

I’ve never been a fan of this one, and now it’s even starting to smell dated. What I do like about it is the hint of dry fruits at the beginning, a bit reminiscent of Lagerfeld’s Jako. However, this particular feature soon wears out, leaving an indifferent, unremarkable, common male scent.

So masculine and nice. Strong, fresh and gentle. But not good longevity.
In my opinion better than other Hugo colognes.

It is a good fragrance….not extraordinary, nice oriental smell…good lasting power…always receives nice compliments…but cannot be described as a marvellous scent..

    Woody-spicy-fresh.
    The dark side of Hugo.
A bit sweeter, warmer and more distinct than the composition from 1995.
Made for evening and night use, when a man reveals his occult (during the day) countenance – an unstoppable, bursting with creative energy heart-catcher, affectionate lover and a king of pubs and discos.
Made for people who implement their plans and use life well.
Hugo Dark Blue doesn’t argue with Hugo. You can use Hugo during the day and it’s ‘dark’ version in the evening. Don’t worry that the leftovers of the fragrance on a jacket or coat will react badly with the new scent.
Festive and entertaining character of the fragrance is underlined by the bottle in the shape of a shaker, designed by Peter Schmidt.

An unremarkable fragrance. It had a strange metallic vibe on my skin that I didn’t like.
Not very long lasting, as well… Just another Hugo Boss boring fragrance.

Used this one for a long time, though it has been replaced by others. Pleasantly masculine, spicy and crisp. Reminds me of cola mixed with ginger and pepper.
