Nice but fleeting. Similar to fendi pour homme but again you need to re apply often

Opening is barbershop like, not too likable and pretty similar to vintage Givenchy Gentleman. But once it settles down after 15 minutes, I get the Prada L’homme Intense vibe. And it stays for hours in beast mode. I definitely recommend it for the mids and dry down. The price makes it a no brainer.

AEL, this smells NOTHING like VC&A Pour Homme. Not even in the same ballpark. I own every formulation of Pour Lui and VC&A, as they are two of my favorite fragrances. There’s zero overlap.

Oscar Pour Lui is a first class scent.
VC&A pour Homme also smells similar to it
So similar there’s really no need to own both.
If I had to choose between them, it’s a no-brainer; Oscar pour Lui is going to be worn more often
I can wear Oscar Pour Lui for both casual and formal occasions.

One of the greatest perfumes ever tried. Classy, unique, manly with that charming old school vibe. Actual formula has great performances, 8+ hours longevity with a noticeable sillage for the first 2 hours. I dont undestand who complains about performances. Reformulations are not always a disgrace. a solid 10 out of 10 for me
EDIT : After 18 hours i can still catch some whiff from the skin. Incredible. I think because it contains a low dosage of alcohol, only 75%. Infact when you spray it, it leaves the skin oily.

This is grapes. Red grapes for depth and scent, green grapes for sourness that it distributes around you. It’s not a strong man perfume, I’d rather describe it as exquisite, gorgeous and rich. It tells the story of the relaxed lifestyle by a successful mid age man who doesn’t need to prove anything to anybody, just enjoy the day.

a georgeous fragrance. floral in a tropical masculine way, with an almost magical, misty nighttime effect, with an undercurrent similar to other early 80’s scents and their bathroom or laundry fresher vibe. I say this in a good way because it epitomizes many of the scents from the era, and gives it a macho feel.
it’s not kouros powerful, and it seems many people for some reason seem to need every fragrance they have to be recognized from miles away, and blow everyone down within 10 feet of them – all day long, but this is just right in terms of strenght and being lighter can be worn to more elaborate and exquisite events and in more intimate settings.
    Very well done stuff.

I am sad to say..this once majestic fragrance has been reformulated and watered down to little more than an immediate skin scent. 🙁
I would recommend it on the scent but not on this current formulation..very poor.
Try and find a vintage if you can to experience it’s true greatness.

If you have ever had the pleasure of smelling Iquitos from the house of Alain Delon, you will find yourself right at home with this. The combination of rose and wood marry to make an incredible olfactory journey. Comparing it on my wrist to Iquitos I can tell a slight difference in spiciness but the DNA certainly matches. Given that Iquitos is going for over $300 on auction sites this is by far the closest I can get given my budget. Longevity and sillage are fantastic for me, and I am one of those people that gets so warm that sents typically dissipate within an hour or two no matter how strong it is on others. Wear this on chilly days or go beast mode at an outdoor bar, in the summer, at night, at the beach. As Iquitos was my signature scent in college I can honestly say that this has become the new standby. 9/10!

Does anybody find this weak? I bought the current formulation first and loved the scent, but within 30-60 minutes it becomes a skin scent. I tried spraying my clothing and that didn’t help any. I wished for better sillage so after months of looking I found a vintage bottle on ebay for $47 and shocking to me it had the same longevity issue. So I returned it. On the positive side they smelled exactly the same.
This is strange because so many people are raving this is a powerhouse. Say what? I can literally spray this 10 times and within the hour nobody will smell it on me. Powerful fragrances are Cartier Santos Concentree and Van Cleef & Arpels Pour Home. Those are beast mode! Pour Lui smells great but I can’t deal with the weakness. Gifted it to a friend who recently told me he couldn’t barely smell it.

I smelled this for the first time when I was about ten years old. 34 years later, it smells the same to me but after decades of life in between, who knows how correct my memory is? That being said, trying to review old formulations seems a bit like trying to hold water in your hands. I don’t get the point.
Perhaps always mislabeled a powerhouse given its age, this isn’t nearly as strong of a scent as say Aramis or Drakkar Noir. Oscar is a friend who invites you in for a glass of cognac in a leathered living room, with a fire to keep you warm on a cold autumn night. Yes, he’s a nighttime scent and definitely a cool weather scent but perhaps not winter cold. The spice here almost works like a citrus in that it brightens up darker tones. The interplay of bright and dark is something I rarely see in modern fragrances, which tend to be mostly bright. And when they are dark, they go completely dark. The dead dark leather appears while the more alive spicy burst is still there and that is when this fragrance is at its masterpiece best.
Yes, part of the appeal of Oscar for me is nostalgia. If I hadn’t had a relationship with Oscar for much of my life, would I still love him? It’s not a scent that I go out and re-buy every time I run out. I may have purchased two bottles in the past decade. But there are perfect times for this truly unique scent (sorry I don’t get many of the comparisons listed in other comments) and given its dirt cheap price, it ranks up there with the best bargains in the fragrance world.
Expect a couple of hours of prime wearing, which for me is perfect for this limited use but classic fragrance.

Vintage Pour Lui gets a much deserved A+ while the sampled reformulation never approaches the greatness of the original.
Newer bottles feature a ‘MADE IN THE USA’ sticker on the bottom while my vintage has ‘MADE IN FRANCE … PARFUMS STERN’ embedded in the glass bottom (not a sticker), ‘seventies-style’ lettering on the front that reads in all caps: ‘OSCAR DE LA RENTA POUR LUI’ … under which is ‘EAU DE TOILETTE 87’ and right under that- ‘SPRAY NATUREL’ … and as Joey79 noted below- the juice thru the bottle appears murkier (more green-ish than blue-ish since the bottle itself is blue).
The original is superlative, well-rounded, balanced and perfect compared to newer versions … deep dark oakmoss and leather in all its pre-IFRA glory as one’s mind’s eye (and nose) is transported back to the awesome 80s! It’s still rich, but the vintage is a ‘deep, tonal, beautiful rich’ whereas the newer feels compromised … like comparing sterling silver to stainless steel (timeless and beautiful versus just functional). Some reforms are better than others, but after trying both, vintage Pour Lui is the one you will come to love.

I like this one very much, this one has a great basenote. It starts out strong, clams down fairly quickly then settles to a very pleasant basenote. It last about 4-6 max on myself, and still smells decent at the end of the workday.

    @Endymion
Note taken. Actually I review today some 4 or 5 vintage beasties from the 80’s and I did use the same basic structure for all of them. Next one will be 1881 for man and I will try to use a different structure. Thanks for the note.

This is a gorgeous macho, complex, fantastic, beasty fragrance.
Great for anything except hot weather.
I love it, my wife loves it. For me it’s a must have masterpiece.
Upon initial spray, it comes on quite bold and manly. The notes are soapy, waxy, lemony and floral in an opening dominated by lavender.
Latter on you receive another avalanche of notes including patchouli and cinnamon. The scent becomes a bit sweeter without loosing the “macho” vibe as there are some new flowerish and woody notes added as well.
Its longevity is easily 14+ hours. You may over spray a bit – 4 sprays not more – for a bigger sillage.
You get a very lovable dry down with a very strong leather, oak moss, musk, sandalwood – notes of the 80’s – plus s hint of labdanum to civilize the scent a bit.
In terms of longevity it’s kind of beasty. Longevity is good enough for 14+ hours.
This EDT smells expensive and manly – like a real Italian from Naples or Palermo.
It is indeed a very nice juice and one of a kind with its proper individuality.
    My rates:
    Scent: 8.0
    Longevity: 9,0
    Sillage: 8.0
    Uniqueness: 8.0

I lost count the number of occasions I smelled this on others during my “London years” not knowing in fact what it was. I remember mentally labelling it a “manager smell”. Sniffing it all these years later it reminds me of lunches at Bertorelli Bros. restaurant at 19 Charlotte St (now a Mexican bar) which was enormously popular with my colleagues for client dining. Italian cooking finished with strega ice cream and an armagnac, surrounded by crisply attired ladies and men. Pour Lui, original Burberry for men and Ted Lapidus Pour Homme in competition. (Lapidus won it for me, with the Burberry running a very close second).
Not sure it truly works in the present era. Very retro for sure. No doubt about it though: when worn for work it receives nothing but compliments and is absolutely never overlooked.
The opening of Lavender, caraway, sage and basil is pretty much how I remember this. Quite soapy once the top notes depart. Dries to something relatively timid (but no wallflower) that is floral, woody and musk. Even in this modern form it still evidently bestows effortless appeal regardless of the slightly unfair accusations of fustiness and eccentricity. I wear it with pride. (Just 37 years too late).

This perfume smell really like the chanel anteus but this one is the more you wear is the more you like. honestly i wear this perfume and i spray it on my back hand before i go to some chemist shop and try comparing it to anteus. Yes anteus smell classy but the smell of this one is more wearable and sweet than the anteus that make you old guy

The description I read on a sample package was “to smell like the deep blue sky of Santo Domingo”
Interesting scent. It does smell like the nighttime sky, and I can smell the blueness and it’s like the sky is coming down like a mist a few hours after the sun has set
Very soft scent, very soft spicyness. I get a sweet tropical like floral in this, and even some orange if sprayed heavily. a blueberry scent too.
There is a tiny bit of a bathroom type scent in this similar n a way to what I get in Van Cleef pour homme. but that is typical of some late 70’s early 80’s scents. I think there’s amber too. You could say generally this has a laundry freshener type scent. Real nice rich floral scent with some sweetness.
Anyways, it’s not loud at all. and for the way it smells, the perfect scent to wear for a candlelight dinner. It seems that it would compliment Oscar for women.

I’m wearing this when I go out tonight.
Checking in the trunk to see if I’m prepared.
Rope, body bag, duck tape, shovel, hammer.
With one spray to chest, I start out rolling the car down the street with the lights off, I jump in, turn the key, and speed off with the lights on, catch you’s later

Very Elegant cologne than in less than 30 minutes takes a nosedive into skin scent and hardly can smell it in the next hour. avoid it. search for vintage bottles.

This is a power scent for the hairy-chested men of the 80s. Like most of it’s brothers of that era, it seeks attention and says to the ladies in their 30inch flares ‘Come to me, baby’.
It’s super sexy and shameless and daring, and I absolutely love it.

  30. :

Just received a vintage bottle. The juice looks murky but wow, what an amazing and powerful scent. The reformulation smells quite similar but without the strength of the original.
I now see what all the fuss is about. Why oh why do fragrance houses mess with the original formulas!

  31. :

At this price Pour Lui is worth a try. I do not wear it often because other fragrances in my collection play this theme much better, but its is a good one nonetheless, and not as cheap smelling as Oscar for Men.
For a better quality, and more adventurous minds, i would recommend Dior’s Jules, i see they’ve relaunched it but have not tested it yet. I hope they’ve kept it unchanged.

@Steve0580 I hear you loud and clear. Skin scent within an hour for me.
I really wish there were seperate reviews for vintage and current formulations alike. I have spent quite a bit of money based on fragrantica reviews. The reviewers have been spot on in their descriptions as far as scents go. The longevity however, which is super important to me has been severely lacking. After buying 5 bottles based on reviews, Versace dreamer has been the shining light. Longevity better than expected.
Back to the pour lui, the current formulation smells amazing. Shame it only lasts for 1 hour and not much projection, if any. I can only imagine how great the vintage myst smell.
Again, I am definitely not blaming fellow reviewers. Every purchase I have made based on reviews has been spot on but only as far as scents go. Longevity, nowhere near it. So called powerhouses are obviously a shadow of their former selves. Shame on you manufacturers!
My advice to others who have blind bought like myself, the reviewers do know what they are talking about and very accurate in their descriptions. There is a caveat, establish whether the review is regarding the vintage or current formulation.
Fragrantica please seperate fragrances into vintage and current formulations. Will save us newbies a lot of time and money.

  33. :

This review is based on the current version, as I have no experience with the vintage version.
The first thing that I noticed after spraying Pour Lui is the similarity to Van Cleef & Arpels Pour Homme. Soft, soapy and floral. Between the two, if I were going to make a definite distinction, I’d say that Pour Lui seems a bit more smooth and refined, whereas, VCA PH, has more of sharper, more distinct edge. I’m not getting leather or oakmoss out of this at all -it’s just soapy floral to me.
I’m amazed when I see so many votes for long lasting longevity and heavy sillage. My experience is just the opposite. I can douse myself in this version or Pour Lui and it’s down to a skin scent in 30 minutes to an hour. From there, it just seems to die and that’s too bad, because it’s a nice fragrance. Maybe I just need to seek out a vintage version.

Do yourself a favor and hunt down the Parfums Stern/Sanofi version, made in France. It will have the the Oscar de la Renta Pour Lui logo high on the box /bottle with a circle/oval around it. Though this is one of the better reformulations (while still under Parfums Stern that is), everything will be upgraded.

Can someone please review the current ‘made in USA’ version?
After reading all the reviews, I decided to buy a couple of bottles. The scent is amazingly masculine and in my opinion timeless. The longevity is very poor. Most of the reviews describe it as a powerhouse.
Has something change? Or is it just me? Lol
I feel let down. Definitely not because I dislike the scent, quite the contrary. After a couple of hours it’s gone.
Would be keen to acquire a vintage bottle. Can’t find any here in Australia.

    A beautiful and masculine fragrance.
I feel really down by the longevity. Most reviews claim that it is a powerhouse and great lasting power. Sadly it is the opposite. Mine is made in the USA, is it possible that this is the reformatted version? I get 3 hours and then it has basically disappeared.
I love this fragrance, and after reading all the glowing reviews, feel ripped off.
Can anyone tell me whether the USA version is watered down? Please

It has taken me a few wears of this perfume to come to like it. I am no a big fan of heavy powerhouse frags but this one I would put in the same class as Boucheron Pour Homme. It is for thee elegant, sophisticated, well mannered man. The dry down is the masterpiece of this juice, powdered leathery scent is what I get. This will definitely have a place in my wardrobe for those casual cool evenings or with a event with my lady.

  41. :

Absolutely stunning. Pour Lui could be bottled up today and sold at ten times its current price as niche. It is an in your face, leather/patchouli/aldehides combo that could bring to mind some of the offerings from brands like Parfumerie Generale… It is definitely a brother of VC&A Pour Homme, both in its composition and time; with VC&A having a stronger emphasis on rose and lavender. They probably smell hyper macho given today’s standards, but who gives a F? These oldies are meant to make an statement, and you for sure will smell different from anyone around you. You should experience Pour Lui just for the pleasure of reference of an old time classic. This was an era dominated by Pour Lui, Anteus, Kouros… you get the picture.
    Smell great my friends.

Jus one more thing for the record: I really think Oscar de la Renta Pour Lui, is in the same League as Chanel Antaeus and Egoist, in both scent as performances.
It really is that good, even if I prefer 21th Century fragrances over last one.

  45. :

I own Pour Lui since 2 years.
As a Chanel fan I was curious for Winter fragrance of this house and tested Antaeus once. After less than 10 minutes this reminded me of Pour Lui. Came home and checked Fragrantica for the characteristics.
Pour Lui was released in 1980, Antaeus in 1991. So both are from the same Era, Both Old school overwhelming, sillage & longevity monsters.
Main difference: bought last year OdlR for 18 €/90 ML
Having already two other fragrances from the same period (Cartier Santos 1981 & Davidoff Zino 1986)
Even for an old 59ner this is more than enough for me from the old days of beasty male fragrances.
Last week I tested Antaeus again, with very much the same outcome. Next time I will test it, I will wear Pour Lui and compare the 2 side by side. in case they are really as similar as my mind suggests (I can never be sure) I will buy Egoist in stead. Just for the collection.
In the meanwhile I have Anteaus and now love it very much. One of my favorite fall/winter frags, together with Prada Amber intense and Armani Code Ultimate.

I blind-bought ODLRPL for the first time about eight months ago … but wear it sparingly and I am still trying to discern why I don’t fully love this.. I am forever drawn to 80s-era scents and it’s obvious this is well-balanced, delicious, sophisticated with an over-the-top opulent feel .. but the richness can be a tad much. Is it the lavender note that brings on the sweetness(?) Dunno. Or maybe I would’ve fallen hard for the original versus the newer version. But I’m becoming more fond of this in the cooler months.

    A barbecue in the Swamp.
It opens with aromatic incense notes.
Then appear these forest leather tones and needles and herbs.
Step by step becomes more hot sticky sweet, but retains those pine green notes.
    Charming. but mournful somehow.
I understand mrhonest speaking of dead and mummies.
caraway, juniper berries, bergamot, labdanum, leather, sandalwood, patchouly are the notes i noticed most.
A middle ground between Missoni Uomo and Yatagan.
Magnetic but too dated and with 70s aftershave facets.

longevity (I put this on at 6:30 in the morning and it’s still there at 19:30 in the evening), sillage, perfect scent to my nose, cheap and I don’t think I will encounter many other people in my area that wear it.
I can’t pick a signature scent but this is definitely close for me at the moment.

This a fragrance I tried a few months ago and then shelved undecided to be tried again later. Going through my collection and giving a go to some fragrances that I have reserved judgement on helps me to resist purchasing new scents to try out, at least for a few days.
Pour Lui is a rich, complex full bodied fragrance with some old fashioned aldehyde umph! While the formulas appear to different, to my nose the smell of Lui is at first reminiscent of Hugo Boss No 1. I have previously reviewed this fragrance and found it to be somewhat piney and soapy. Two adjectives that I wouldn’t use today. To me this demonstrates that our reaction to fragrances changes along a personal timeline, perhaps due to the season or simply as our tastes change. What I experienced from tonight’s application was the initial sweet and sour blast drys down to a still dominant rich and rounded sweet and sour aroma that grabs your attention, nicely seasoned with some oak moss and muted floral and wrapped in a textured leather. This is a mature gentleman’s fragrance for sure, very masculine and nothing like many of the current more unisex fragrances. It doesn’t seem too casual and due to the projection which is assertive would not be recommended for a dinner engagement. Por Lui instead impresses me a more of a well dressed social event fragrance or a fragrance worn by a man in a professional position of some authority. For mature (not necessarily “old”) men only.

Try to imagine VC&A Pour Homme, add some spiciness, maybe make it a little dirty, and maybe a dab of sweetness to make it a little thicker than VC&A Pour Homme. 🙂
Basically soapy + spicy + little dirty + little sweetness?
Pretty cheap too. If you like the VC&A, then check this out.

Anyway, this fragrance is not for me, im 21 years old and i think this fits on 50+ ages… the thing i like from this one is that it last for hours, easily it last 24h+… it can fill a room.

Vintage late 80’s oscar de la renta opens heavy on aldehydes. I got almost no floral notes minus anis and shades of bergamote. There is something dirty i like in odlrpl. A great leather scent in its drydown. Strangely enough the trip ends on a sweeter note becoming even sporty in a way. Longevity i got around 6 hours. Really not bad. Makes me curious about trying the reformulation

Pour Lui strikes me as a clean and sophisticated scent which exudes male confidence and charissma. It starts out being slightly harsh but quickly evolves into a beautifully balanced fragrance. One or two sprays is recommended. Loving it!
Surprising after a few weeks of wearing this fragrance I have come to dislike it. I don’t know what went wrong, but the dry down now makes me nauseous. I noticed that the dry down has a sort of animalistic “stank” to it that would have been bearable if not for the obvious and unfortunate odd synthetic smell at the end. Really Disappointed with this blind buy. I strongly recommend that you smell this one before buying.

First use I thought I shouldn’t have bought it its awful.
Second use from start was this does smell good.
And then you get the drydown and it smells great.
    Man oh man it’s good

In my opinion, this is a masterpiece, even in it’s current formulation. I adore it. I love Antaeus also and I feel these two are cousins. Of course, perfume preference is subjective, but I find it so hard to comprehend somebody not, at least, finding this pleasant. So different to most of the male scents on the market today, which I feel smell like Lynx deodorant (Hugo Boss, I’m looking at you!) I purchased my 90ml bottle for less than £15; the best blind buy I have ever made!

Oscar de la Renta. I walked past one of his holiday homes in Las Perlas off Panama. Classy. Like his clothes, and perfumes, just classy. Not overdone, not way out there, but fine, tasteful. What a romantic cologne. Testing a vintage original mini. I love this. Many women would also love this, on themselves or on anyone…I can see how it is classified as a men´s scent but many women will like this one too. It has a fairly strong clary sage or pine type of scent, they use in many colognes but it also has many elements, some quite on the sweet side. Loads of frankincense, incense, leathers too. Prefer the drydown to the opening. No cloying modern musks…Splash not spray for this one as it can be strong.

An aldehyde BOMB, this should be the reference fragrance for “men’s aldehydes”. Stuffed with pretty much every trope of “powerhouse” perfumery, its a wonder this doesn’t come off worse.
Long story short, its a waxy/soapy clean, green leather chypre. Aldehydes are a tricky, feminine note to me (the strong waxy odor recalls beauty products) but this is pretty masculine in a very “clean cut barbershop” kind of way. Easily picked out as being from a bygone era, it avoids falling over the edge into being considered overtly “dated”.
Floral and soapy, the overall character is pretty reserved despite its relatively strong presence.
This is a good reference purchase for someone looking to expand their tastes into fragrances strongly typical of previous eras. If you enjoy this, then you are set to explore some of the weirder/more adventurous stuff that was put out.

I have just received it (a first time blind buy, based on reviews here), and this is exactly what I was looking for – a very original, classy, elegant and mature scent with a touch of history. Highly recommended!
… after 20 hours of heavy testing I can say: go and buy it! For that price you will get a very unique addition to your collection.

I FINALLY FOUND IT!!! THIS IS THE ONE!!! OSCAR GOT IT PERFECT!!!
I purchased this outstanding powerhouse several weeks ago, and just ordered my second bottle today. I won’t let myself run out of this magnificent, long-lasting, men’s fragrance.
Very rich, floral, herbal opening that settles hours later into a dark, woodsy, oakmoss base with just the right amount of dirty incense to make you crave the blood of night dwellers.
I assume I have a reformulation, which is great because this juice is so powerful I don’t think I could handle a stronger vintage!!!
This is truly a man’s fragrance!
Longevity lasts for 6 to 8 hours on my dry skin.
Sillage is as good as anything I have, and you will smell this on your clothes the next day. More than two sprays and they will know you’re coming before they see you!
BEST BLIND BUY I HAVE EVER MADE!!!
