Formerly known as Driftwood, this has not only been renamed but also (I think) sightly altered, because the longevity of Machrie seems to me superior to the previous Driftwood. It opens with a lovely blast of fresh sea salt and sage, then, after a short while, the sage develops into a wonderful note of dry, woody pencil shavings, and lingers for a good 8 hours, if not more. It’s fresh, but in an outdoor, rugged way. It’s somewhat redolent of an autumnal beach walk and finding an old wooden boat on a wild Scottish coast as the sea hits the pebbled shore.
In a way, it’s a pity this wasn’t released by a bigger “niche” house at a much higher price because then I think a lot more people would be talking about it. As it is, Machrie seems to be a bit of a secret, which is fine by me!
