I got Little Black Dress as a re-gift from a friend who didn’t like it. Unfortunately I don’t like it either.
Looking at the fragrance notes there’s nothing I should dislike. So, I can’t explain what it is, but I instantly feel sick when I smell this perfume. It’s really rare for me to feel this strongly about a scent but I really can’t stand it.
I tried wearing it several times but gave up after eventually getting a migraine (which also isn’t typical for me).
I started suspecting that my bottle was a lemon, so recently got a sample of this from Avon – And there it was again, the same sickly smell that made me gag.
My husband quite liked Little Black Dress on me but I’ve put it on my never-again-list. Must be just personal preferences!
Any positives? Longevity and sillage are great for the price, so definitely a good find if it tickles your fancy.

This fragrance is very elegant, very suitable for an evening outing. All notes are in perfect harmony. the longevity of avon perfumes is excellent to say the least!

Surprisingly, a very nice scent from Avon. illage is low, like always…sigh…sigh…to my nose this is a light oriental…has a vibe (does not smell like) Chanel Coco family. Nice ! One of Avon’s better scents.

Avon’s website in Canada describes this fragrance as featuring a top note of Italian/Sicilian lemon, with a heart of jasmine & a sandalwood base note. As a result I kept trying to “find” the lemon but found it an odd smelling lemon….because it’s not there, in my opinion! The japanese plum and jasmine are what stand out for me. I find it to be best suited to cooler weather, as its fruity side seems a bit cloying in heat, like candied fruitcake! Overall it’s a very pretty, sort-of-old-fashioned-but-in-a-nice-way fragrance, not stuffy but a bit formal and complex.
I got this bottle in 2017, and it’s square like the photo above, but with a solid black cap, a gold square behind the front label, and a black bottle back which shows through the liquid.
I never smelled the original launch of this so I can’t comment on any variation, but I think “Chic In Black” may be the same juice? I could be wrong but CIB’s reviews make sense…

This was my very first signature scent. I think my mother bought it for me when I was in high school. I loved it, but it’s been years since I’ve had a bottle. I’m tempted to find one now just for nostalgic value.

I was worried about hearing that little black dress had been changed and didn’t smell the same because I recently purchased it since I missed wearing this lovely fragrance but luckily when I sprayed it I discovered that it’s the same little black dress I remembered, maybe a note or two has changed but to me it smells very similar to when I use to wear it about 12 years ago,it is a fragrance that smells like its much more expensive than it is and while I usually go for more of a fruitier or gourmand fragrance I still find this perfume to be very ladylike without being too on the mature side and that’s a positive for me because I usually don’t like the very mature scents, but overall I believe this to be one Avon’s best perfumes and hopefully they do not discontinue this like they did with another Avon fragrance I liked called wink.

It is available again here in the philippines and sadly it doesnt smell the same as it was before. Its almost unrecognizable and bad to the point that it smells like lanvin arpege diluted in an old alcohol but the drydown is much better resembles j’adore but you have to endure a few hours to reach this point. It just stayed powdery for a very long time. If you miss this the old formula then I advice you to get benetton hot. Almost exactly the same scent and price point

this is my all-time favorite. I was disappointed with the re-make of this perfume. It’s no longer velvety and powdery. The smell has become more of those scents from Victoria’s Secret – catchy in a vain and vulgar way.. Nothing against VS Scents though.
The original version was sexy and kinda crisp and sexy – not very offensive but something you would want to sniff again when you smell it.
The old version is “lady-to-woman-like, the new one is more of a chic perfume..
so sad the formulation has changed. 🙁

I bought this in the springtime, and altho at first squirt i found this weak and non-descript,i turned to it again this Autumn, and what a difference ! I smell the smell of walking into someone’s lean-to,where they are growing tomatoes and coriander, and i think the autumn atmospheric conditions are intensifying this.do you like the smell of garden centres, and botanical garden hot-houses,you know the smell of greenhouse-irrigation,mixed with slow-release fertilizer pellets and african violets ? Smelling these smells in this perfume have been enjoyable to me,as i have always loved that garden centre smell.anyone else who found it weak and non-descript at first, give it another chance this Autumn, and i hope you see what i mean !

I liked this perfume- It’s soft and inoffensive. I like wearing it in summer when my regular perfume- Gucci’s Guilty Black- is just a bit too heavy and sultry for daytime wear.

One of my most beloved. All year round perfume, sexy, feminine, sophisticated, complex, not out dated, with great staying power and lovely performance in any weather and for any occasion.
Will always be in my collection.
Not Avon-ish at all,if that repulse you from testing it.
A winner in comparison with Big Houses’high prized “waters”and with a prize that can make you smile forever!
    Love it!Love it!Love it!

I remember when I was in high school, almost every girl had this perfume. And not only high school girls, even grown women wore it.I liked is as a perfume,it was one of the best Avon perfumes back then, and living in a small city like mine,it was hard to get perfumes or other”high quality”cosmetics. So we had Avon.
I remember I didn’t wanna buy it because so many people had it,and I don’t like to smell like other girl’s perfume(sounds strange,I know)
But now I consider into buying it,mainly because I grew up and I think this is a pretty sophisticated perfume and like I said,it smells nice.I will buy the 10 ml or the 30 ml version.
Another thing I like about it is that(at least I think)it’s and homage to Coco Chanel.I don’t think many people know this, but the”little black dress”was designed by Coco Chanel.

I used to like this in high school, when I could only afford to buy Avon. I got it again recently, but I think they’ve changed the formula. It is more citrus and less sweet than it was. Also very sharp in the beginning and I don’t think it used to be like this. Or maybe I’ve just changed my taste in perfumes?

Strong and offensive. Head ache waiting to happen if you are into very strong spicy orientals then this is for you. Very demanding very serious smell. Solange is great tho

Little Black Dress by Avon is one of my all time favorite Avon perfumes. I think we may still have the original formulation in my country because it is nothing like the recent descriptions from people here. There is a rumor that it is being discontinued, I stocked up on three full bottles at a great “end of range” price a while ago.
Now on to the scent, the one I have is a beautiful warm spicey scent. Spicey ginger and coriander lends this a warm exotic feeling and the white florals gives this a spectacular creamy feeling. It is strong and glamorous. Jasmine and gardenia is most prominent but a single note does not overpower any of the others. It dries down to a beautiful spicey woody base. I find this to be a complex scent, I constantly try to decipher it during the day. It really holds my attention. It is beautiful, it is spicey and warm yet somehow it still feels elegantly clean. I think the name really suits it, a simple black dress made from impeccable quality fabric in a simple yet beautiful style with minimum adornments. This will forever be one of my favorite perfumes.

I just received my bottle and I think it’s just outdated and it’s went bad. I wanted to like it SO much, I’d smelled it in the past and loved it, but this purchase is not right. Maybe the ones actually stamped 2001 are just too old to try.

Another likeable offering from Avon; nothing earth-shattering but pleasant and wearable. You’ve smelled this before – sweet on top, with aquatic undertones and the faint hint of woods in the base. A good, reasonably priced fragrance that will have you smelling nice, even if it’s not particularly interesting.

Review for North American version. I just received my bottle of the newly issued Little Black Dress (I am in Canada), and I was hoping that it was a true relaunch of Chic in Black from years past. To my nose, these are not alike. They are different enough that I would not even call Little Black Dress a reformulation. This is beyond a mild tweaking, it’s a whole different perfume. This new LBD opens very citrusy and ends musky, and that’s about it. It smells much simpler, and projection is very weak. I am not getting the more complex layers of Chic in Black, or the plummy floral woody blend of notes. It’s remotely possible I am remembering Chic in Black incorrectly, but I doubt that. I shall have to dig it out and compare to be sure, but to me, this has been changed beyond recognition. At least Avon had the decency to give it a different name instead of pretending it’s the same scent.

First spray I sensed a flowery woody smell, clean and nice, simple.it is the type of scent i like sweet, elegant and classy. And the plum note stands out nicely.
Chanel Chance is the type of perfume i prefer for day time wear and Little Black Dress enters the same category.
I would dress casual elegant when wearing this and suits well for any ocasion.love it.

Easily one of the cleanest scents I’ve ever worn, not ever talks about how clean this smells. Spritz and go: pay your bills, on a date or to the office, this fragrance is a multi-tasker and is capable and appropriate for all occasions.

Did’t fancy the scent at first. Had a headache after tried it once.
One day I got this as a gift (2 boxes!) but since the smell wasn’t really something that I can tolerate, I gave it away and the other one left in the drawer for years, still in its neat, plastic packaged box.
Found it recently while spring-cleaning and realized that the smell was somewhat mellowed and acceptable by my nose.
Wear it now at work since it’s not as strong as it used to be.

megenz has right!Absolutely agreed! I have a same experience with LBD! It was very unique for me, I can clearly remeber the notes of it, that I loved so much many years before. I bought a small bottle today just for memories, opened it, smelled, and …pffff…what’s that? I just waited and waited for the glamourous notes but they didn’t come. Now LBD is so simple as possible 🙁 I could cry. Only a VERY sweet creamy juice, nothing else. Similar to other perfumes of Avon. I am so disappointed. Besides, I remember, that it had the top, the middle and the base notes, and lasted for almost a whole day on me, but this new one is a disaster. No more than 2 ours, without any developing. Only powdery sweetness, and that’s all.
Not to mention the body lotion and the soap….They are all only the pale shadows of the original Little Black Dress. Does anyone know, what happenned? Is it true for every country where they sell it? (I live in Hungary)

Oh, Little Black Dress, what has happened?
LBD and I go way back to a time when I was in my early 20’s and she was an escape to a better, more glamorous and sophisticated existence. Fast forward a decade or so and I was so excited to pick up an Avon catalogue to find she was still available. I waited until her arrival, broke open her box and…
    …oh. Okay.
Either my sense of smell and chemistry has moved on or they’ve done something to my Little Black Dress that has made her more brash and less mellow and deep than she once was. Something that I can feel at the top of my nose that makes me squint my eyes and reminds me of dissolvable aspirin. Why are you screaming at me, LBD?!
I’m so disappointed that after giving it a couple of goes over the last couple of weeks that I might have to pass her on to someone who might be able to find a bit more beauty in her than I can right now. It makes me sad, we used to get along so well and it’s as though she has blocked me from her newsfeed 🙁
    Sillage: Moderate
Longevity: 3 hrs on skin and roughly the same on clothes in a humid climate

I have a very special bond with this perfume. For one thing this was the first perfume I bought for myself . But my affiliation with it is not just because of sentimental reasons. For me this is one of the perfumes that mixes in the best way with my skin. Meeting with my own chemistry LBD reveals not only the best of itself , but of myself too , in my opinion. It’s a rich, creamy scent of white flowers (the most prominent being jasmine) with a juicy plum note and just a hint of spices thanks to coriander and ginger. Near the end the fragrance develops into warm woody notes and musk. To me this smells not only very sophisticated and elegant, but it also has a very comforting effect. Sometimes I just spray it on my pillow before going to bed. If I know I am going to have a hectic day at work or uni I take with me in my purse. It’s one of my best love relationships.
But even though I have a tons of compliments left for this frag, I must admit it’s not perfect. On the down side the longevity is not really good – 3 hours max. Also if you like your frag to have bigger projection , you might be dissapointed . The sillage (on me at least) is soft, sitting close to the skin, and although I find this as a plus some people might not.
Nontheless my advice is that if you like white flowers you should give it chance. Who knows, it can surprise you , even if its not a pricey one.

Soundtrack: Come fly with me by Frank Sinatra
I purchased the purse concentre version of Little Black Dress by Avon while I was still in the Philippines. I have read a couple of reviews about this underrated fragrance before getting myself one. It is a good find.
It’s very rich, flowery and spicy on the side. I can smell a hint of pepper and ginger. The apricot blossom and gardenia notes are very noticeable, too. I am not really concern about the longevity and sillage of the fragrance, as long as I can smell it on myself, it’s good enough for me. I love how this simple fragrance develops throughout the day and how it smells on my clothes… so lovely…
Audrey Hepburn kind of feeling in a bottle… a little tap dancing in those cigarete pants.

I don’t like this scent. In my opinion, it lacks of longevity and it fades away after apply very soon. Something in the scent irritates my nose (Maybe ginger or coriander, I’m not sure). I can’t stand this scent. I should not have bought this perfume. I think I have to keep it in my wardrobe alone or give it away to some friends whom like this scent.

  37. :

Classic, elegant, old-dior-like. It’s simple, will not be updated after a season. Not trendy, but interesting enough. For me it’s a little bit creamy, feminine, skin-like.

  38. :

This is a green floriental. White floral? No indeed.
I get the cyclamen, coriander, african ginger, apricot blossom and honeysuckle, ylang-ylang, pink peony, jasmine and datura, sandalwood, tonka bean, musk, woody notes. Might also be getting plum. I doubt all of the notes listed are actually in this fragrance, because lets be honest, this is a cheap one.
I absolutely DO NOT get gardenia, and I do not know how anyone could because this is not a creamy white floral. This is a blatantly green, woody, aquatic oriental floral.
It’s a sweet, tarty, synthetic and harsh smelling thing.
It’s okay as cheapies go but nothing to write home about. A firm no thank you on this one. It’s just not pretty, there is something about it which is bathroom freshener spray reminiscent.

  39. :

    3 out of 5

yum! corriander and ginger with something slightly sweet on opening followed by ylang ylang and jasmine, white flowers but heavy yet subtle rather than strong if that makes sense. A musky, woody, white flower base. Certainly a white floral scent, a great all rounder. Avon are really getting it right for the price. Check out ‘today’, another good Avon scent. I’m not just saying this – I have some pricey scents and this compares. Longevity is great, sillage is good. Well worth a try. They call it oriental, I say woody, floral, musk.

Decent budget choice for an evening perfume. Apart from the favourable price, in a world full of so many precious blends, I wouldn’t reach for it for a special event. It’s fine, it works but isn’t intriguing a bit. I can see myself wearing it at a family dinner or a night out with friends; basically when I won’t attempt to impress anyone so I’d prefer to spare my more important fragrances.

  43. :

This is a good perfume and unbelievably cheap as well!
It reminds me of Splendor – Elizabeth Arden.
To me LBD is sophisticated ,very elegant for everyday wear.I am not sure why would most people prefer to wear this at winter time i can imagine it being a fresh breath on a hot summer or spring day. I love these linear perfumes that make you feel lighter and i also miss the spring and summer ohh….
The bottle is also very simple and defined the only thing i hate is the cap.which btw is not the same as in the picture presented here!
Very good longevity and projection without it being offencive, on the contrary it compliments a simple but polished everyday look perfectly. Bravo Avon!

This is absolutely one of my favorites. I can’t believe how many compliments I’ve gotten with this one – when I tell people it’s an Avon scent. they’re incredulous! I have a couple of small botttles stashed. When I use them up, I’ll try Chic in Black – or maybe I’ll be tired of it by then and move on to something completely different.

  46. :

I bought this perfume on a whim very cheaply, in a gift pack that included a whole bunch of other Little Black Dress-smelling stuff. I actually really like the bottle – it’s simple and classic. The juice itself is pretty classic too – on first whiff, it was incredibly familiar, as I must’ve smelled it a hundred times on the various kind women in my life over the years.
On my skin, this is a pleasant, inoffensive floral-oriental. I smell lots of white florals and some background gentle spice – probably the ginger, coriander, sandalwood. My boyfriend described it as “old-fashioned”, but certainly such a description doesn’t put me off at all. It’s just that somehow this perfume doesn’t really “do anything for me”, if that makes sense. I have no desire to sniff my wrist when I wear it. It has soft-moderate sillage but doesn’t last well on my skin (like all Avon perfumes, unfortunately).

  47. :

    3 out of 5

Beautiful fresh floral perfume, longevity pathetic, sillage is moderate or rather soft aftr 10-15 mins.. Bt seeing the price, it’s all right.. Can be kept in the handbag for retouch up. Overall 7/10. Repurchase no, I find the body lotion better!!!

  48. :

My grandmother bought me this, so it will always hold a special place. It was a sweet, 15ml little bottle and I always keep it in the box and will treasure it always.
The black box is very classy, looks expensive and chic, where as the bottle itself could do with some re-designing. The font on the front is tacky!
As for the scent itself, it’s very generic. It’s classy, yes, but very un-original. It makes me think of Givenchy’s Amarige, in that it’s a clean, sophisticated white floral.
I will treasure it for sentimental values, but I wouldn’t buy a whole bottle.

  49. :

This perfume does NOT make you feel unique, like someone said down there. Umm, it’s quite the opposite. It makes you feel like a part of the crowd. Too predictable and too boring. Sorry 🙁

  50. :

Simple clean white floral – I wouldn’t mind a bit of animal or dirt in it, to keep it a bit more interesting.

Jasmine is probably my favorite flower for fragrances. Love the plum too. I’m glad I already have this Avon masterpiece. Incredibly pleased with the longevity for such class and brand (Avon fragrances last most commonly about 1-2 hours on my skin, this one stays for 3 at least), and it came at really comfortable price for me. No need to wait, purchase it! 🙂

Am i the only person who smell coconut in this? Interestingly, i don’t get the jasmine, too. It smells like suntan lotion to me.

I haven’t met a woman (or a man) who didn’t like LBD. It’s problably the best selling Avon fragrance for women in Europe – and rightfully so.
Just like the black dress, this perfume is one of a kind. It’ fresh, modern and classical alike and with an uncanny elegance.
I’ve always loved Little black Dress and I probably always will…

My mom has this perfume. She is in her mid 50s.
Very nice, sophisticated smell. Smells classical. I cannot but think that this must be inspired by one of high end perfumes, but cannot really recall which one.
I think this would suit any girl or woman, aged 30+. Younger women can wear it also, but it somehow requires a special occasion.
I see it as somewhat evening smell, but this can be used daily as an office scent, if used sparingly.
    Go fr it.
    7.5/10

Now that’s interesting. To aid in my quest for an oriental fragrance I ran a search on Fragrantica for the most popular oriental for women (in my age group!) for the years 2000 to present.
The results were Bvlgari Omnia in 1st, Spiritueuse Double Vanille Guerlain in 2nd, and Avon Little Black Dress in 3rd. It seems to have been a quiet achiever.
I’ve tried Omnia but it didn’t work for me. I may not have the opportunity to try the Guerlain. But I did receive a sample of Little Black Dress from a generous fellow Fragratician (thank you!).
LBD is a classic, elegant and well put-together floral. The white flowers stay fresh throughout, with plum adding richness. The ginger and spicy coriander give way to the honeysuckle as it settles. It’s all anchored nicely by the sandalwood. I don’t think I’ll need to wait for a special occasion to wear this one.

It’s the same here, ClaudiaA1. This was my perfume first love when I was a teenager – adult, sophisticated, golden and luxurious. I still remember that classy, quite strong and floral chypry scent, so recently I ordered a small 30 ml special edition bottle, because I was longing for it. I sprayed some on my wrist and was quite confused- could it be reformulated? I perceive some green notes which weren’t there before (maybe it’s the coriander and the honeysuckle). After a while it becomes more like the scent I remember.
It’s still a great one from Avon!

It smells sophisticated, like for a grown-up woman. Not everyone likes it. My sister told me it smelled masculine. My office mate said it smelled funny — like incense. After what my office mate told me, I quit wearing this perfume.

This was another little acquisition based on very favourable reviews on Fragrantica and oh my, what a pleasant surprise!
Firstly, the bottle is very classy indeed and will adorn even the most discerning perfumistas dresser and secondly the fragrance itself is beautiful!
Wow Avon! I’m impressed. This opens with a slightly spicy but sweet scent which stays sweet but fresh into the heart.
I think it has some lovely notes such as plum and jasmine and the composition of notes in this fragrance are very well behaved, nicely blended and very likeable.
This won’t offend or scream out as you walk past someone, it sits close to the skin but seems to have a fairly good longevity for an Avon Fragrance.
I really think that this is a classy perfume and if you didn’t know it was Avon, you would be forgiven for thinking that it was a rather expensive scent.
The dry down is lovely and addictive and it leaves you wanting more.
This fragrance is suitable for wearing at just about any occasion and I am glad I have it in my ever increasing perfume collection!

Firstly this is not like Boss Nuit AT ALL. This has much more sillage, much heavier on the florals, added spiciness and no sweet fruit notes… I wouldn’t have thought the two were even similar in any way.
LBD starts a little spicy and settles as a strong gardenia-jasmine scent with woods. It’s mature and not too cheap smelling, a good frag for nights out in a little black dress.

I can’t say I’m one who thinks this smells anything like Boss Nuit – the comparisons actually surprise me as they are nowhere near alike on my skin at all. I wish they were though as I’m a big fan of Boss Nuit and Little Black Dress is certainly cheaper 🙂
I respect Little Black Dress a lot. I’ve had more bottles than I can count over the years and I’ve just sampled it again today…and I realise that I miss it now and will need to order again. On me, it’s woody, musky, floral and that delicious plum note is as luscious as I remember it to be.
It doesn’t last long and to have any real projection with this you do need to use a heavy hand when spraying (I don’t bother with roller balls when it comes to Avon for this reason) – but it’s classy, it’s in the middle when it comes to simple and complex, and it’s an excellent option for a ‘night time’ perfume that won’t break the bank.

Classy and seductive, this perfume makes you feel unique! Sophisticated white flowers are mixed perfectly, and Little Black Dress is the right name for this fragrance. Elegant, modern, somehow mystic, Little Black Dress (for me) represents a classy woman in her mid 30s, wearing a tight black skirt and a fancy blouse. But when she gets home and changes into her favourite, timeless black dress, she turns into a diva.
Modern, seductive, that’s what this perfume is.

Little Black Dress, according to the latest Avon brochure is still being sold and has not been discontinued. I received a fresh sample of this fragrance a few months ago from an Avon representative.
Sandalwood and creamy gardenia are fairly dominant notes in this composition. The other accords tend to fade into non-existence. It’s kind of like a cheaper version of Estee Lauder’s Sensuous. It’s a soft, pleasant woodsy floral.
Just like a ‘little black dress’, this fragrance is simplistic yet classy. It’s fairly versatile too, suitable for wear in almost any season. I would highly recommend purchasing the gift-set to explore the layering options. Avon always makes great gift packs.
Little Black Dress has relatively good longevity, however the projection can wear more like a skin-scent. I do enjoy this fragrance, but I honestly can’t picture myself buying a bottle, even if it is extremely affordable.

I bought an unopened bottle of this at a thrift shop for $6 years ago and I fell in love! I’ve been trying to save it as much as I can because unfortunately I haven’t found this anywhere else. It’s a very classy smell and bottle and it’s quite longlasting!

I was given this perfume by my sister as a Christmas gift in 2010. At the time we were all working on a family reunion – a thing in itself that could prove tricky. I absolutely adore the smell on my sister. It’s lovely for a younger skin. I have 17 years on her, so will stick to the heavier hitting stuff I know. It certainly does not smell the same on me as on her.
The fragrance for me represents a younger woman, in the maelstrom of spreading her wings and flying; launching her career, finding a significant other, so for me, it represents a different philosophy of transformation growth change. All phases long past for me. To me there is something schoolgirl about it: “Teacher look at me! I know the right answer.”
As I said, lovely on a young skin. Just not me. Love the ginger and white floral notes.

I had had this perfume several times since it was launched in 2001 , It’s classic , beautiful and unique . Specially when compared with other Avon perfumes which seems all the same sometimes . Even better it ‘s really long lasting and Avon scents are known to have longevity problem but …It didn’t work with my body chemistry at all :”( ..I had to stop wearing it one day after Mom pointed out that I smelled “sweaty” ..and I had to agree with her …Ginger & some base notes don’t work well with me …It’s recommended for winter , Autumn & Evening in general .

I don’t usually write reviews of Women’s perfumes, as a guy I tend to stick to what I know/what I wear etc.
However, I met a woman recently for whom the word ‘ravishing’ didn’t even begin to describe her allure. We became more than friends and she smelt divine. When I asked her what she was wearing she told me ‘LBD’ by Avon. I told her she smelt unbelievably delicious – a very own Aphrodite with an aphrodisiac fragrance – enticing, intoxicating and gorgeous – the woman and the perfume.
