J’adore le Roi Santal – and true to its name it is indeed the King of Sandalwood – nothing but the sublime majesty of the holiest of woods. The bottle I have smells like either pure White Sandalwood (what some refer to as Mysore) or a subtle blend of White and Australian sandalwoods.
I grew up around sandalwood and the fragrance has fond, comforting associations for me as well as a kind of spiritual dimension and Comptoir Sud have done an excellent job of capturing the perfect sandalwood.
If only the concentration were a bit higher this would be utterly perfect – although the scent itself is pure, unadulterated sandalwood, seemingly natural in origina and of the highest quality it doesn’t last very long at all. On my skin it becomes undetectable within an hour.
For those seeking a perfect sandalwood scent, this is the closest I have ever found to the aroma of a 100 year old bottle of East Indian Sandalwood Oil that I acquired some years back, and that is my own holy grail and olfactory reference to the sacred wood.
Worth buying just to be able to savour its magnificence every now and then.
I have managed to slightly extend the longevity by first applying cured ambergris or fractionated coconut oil(I suppose something like sweet almond oil would work just as well) and ISO E super would probably work well too.
