The EDP reminds me of YSL M7, the original formulation. It opens with a short blast of citrus, then settles into the smae exact smell as Avon Skin-So-Soft insect repellent. It is heavily citronelol influenced for the first hour or two. It then becomes very oud-esque in the dry down, & thus enters the M7 similarity phase.

My husband wore this today; he has had it for a while but always seems to choose something else. And wow, just wow. Habit Rouge is basically Shalimar for men. Check the similarities in the notes. It has that same beautiful citrus and vanilla shimmer of Shalimar. Rather obvious, but I wanted to say it anyway.
So I was just sitting here breathing this lovely Shalimar pour Homme aka Habit Rouge when I had a major flashback to EMERAUDE before it was gutted and relegated to the discount shelves (shame on you, Coty). Our next door neighbor lady used to wear real Emeraude back in the early seventies. I have a good idea that her bottle was older than that. It was the only perfume I knew her to wear, and the memory of real Emeraude is strong with me. Habit Rouge is very close to real Emeraude.

@Curt42: try the EDT! EDP concentrations are often deep, but inclined towards a less mobile sillage (I have found this to be especially true of Guerlains)…
There is a soft radiance, but for more straightforward projection, the EDT is a stronger than average performer, while still offering the genteel Mediterranean character you’ve identified.

My bottle of HR EDP has to be one of the the most unique men’s fragrances I have encountered. At least as far as the opening. The Orange and Basil combine to produce a rose scent. I can understand why some men would find it a bit feminine off the top. But it would be great for formal occasions, Sunday brunch, weddings, etc.
My only complaint is in the performance. I’ve worn it on four occasions and after drydown, projection is spiced jasmine and even that falls to skin too quickly. I doused myself with it (6 sprays) 15 minutes ago and it is already drying down to the faintly spicy jasmine.
If I lived in Spain or along the Mediterranean, I could see this as a pleasing, inoffensive signature.

I just received it today, my girlfriend opened for me and she tried on her wrist. She said you’ll not like it cause it’s oldish. I agreed the opening it is lemony harsh, but I said wait 10 min. After was already different, the drydown is powdery woody oriental, very masculine. I like it. I think is suitable for a man after 45.

Just wait…wait for the dry down. It took a while to get there, but it’s worth the wait.
    It’s old.
    It’s new.
    It’s a memory.
    It’s special.
Here’s to hoping that people in my trail will relate.

There’s been less than two times where I have ordered another bottle of a perfume within minutes of receiving and testing one I just opened.
    This is that time.
The same, illogical centre of the brain that is affected by this scent is the one who is compelled to (quite camly and sensibly) order more as soon as it is received.
    It’s that good.
EDP is definitely related to EDT, and yet they are so different, it’s like winning first prize in the Guerlain lottery, twice from different tickets.
If a world government sprayed this into the air and onto its population, I’d move to where it was happening.
Why aren’t we sprayed with this when we are about to get off an airplane?
I spent maybe 2K on other fragrances to get to Guerlain and find my paradise, a reasonable fare, I say.

Where do i start with this one? This has to be one of the greatest fragrances created! I don’t care if people say that this is for older persons or not, the scent is excellent, from the fresh citrus spritz at the start to the vanilla / leather dry down. The fragrance is multi faceted, the floral aspect is balanced by the wood elements, so it never becomes sweet. The dry down is heavenly, I’ve read on the reviews that some people says it smells like Soda pop, they’re not that far off, as the Vanilla mixed with the rose, wood, patchouli & leather gives that impression!
Longevity is impressive at 8 hours, projection albeit is moderate. It is different from the EDT so do not consider this as a stronger version of the EDT.
I consider Guerlain to be one of the best perfumery houses still.

Which Habit Rouge is Right for You—EdT or EdP?
Guerlain Habit Rouge EdP and EdT is each an exquisite fragrance. I own both. But there are significant differences.
First, we can lay to rest any misconception that the EdP is simply a stronger or more intense version of the EdT. No so.
While the notes may be the same, the balance has been altered, giving an entirely different impression. The EdT is generally considered to be the “classic” version most representative of Habit Rouge. The citrus opening, melting into the famous Guerlainade vanilla-rose accord is something you’ll either love or hate.
If you love it—the EdT is for you. If you don’t. you may prefer the EdP. To my nose, the Eau de Parfum emphasizes the soft leather and rose. The development is not as dramatic—or perhaps as interesting—as with the Eau de Toilette.
No matter which you choose, both are very French, nuanced and soft orientals in the most elegant and gentlemanly manner.
Most of the time, I prefer the EdT. But it took me several months to arrive at that decision. Habit Rouge is not a superficial experience. Give it time. Live with it a little. If you have further interest, see my separate review for the EdT. I hope this is helpful to you.

Deep and mysterious, every time you smell your wrist, you can smell different ingredients. And in different weather, you can also smell so different.

  12. :

    3 out of 5

    I like it.
It is elegant rose vanilla scent. Powedery and yet masculine and has the right balance between sweetness and dryness. There is very faint oud/rose background that takes it to another level. Obviously classy and high quality.
The edp is beast mode projection and longevity. It keeps going and going the whole day.
Also it Can be found very cheap online.

Great scent by Jean Paul Guerlain, Great projection and longevity, probably the only fragrance with rose that I would ever wear, very refined and classic, got a lot of compliments on Habit Rouge, great for fall/ winter days, all in all no Guerlain experience is complete without Habit Rouge.

  14. :

    4 out of 5

Rich, dense, challenging. It can be cloying if over sprayed. I can’t seem to figure it out completely and so seem to be addicted to it until the weather changes. No dharma is definitive

I wanted to love this, I really did. The drydown is really nice, but the opening is so harsh to me that it makes my stomach churn.

  16. :

    3 out of 5

Starts off powdery and soft. Then a tidal wave of citrus, mostly lemon. Then the powder continues but starts to head toward sandalwood more. Then a beautiful rosewood and suede tone comes through with just a hint of that lemon, just enough to tease you but never the sharp lemon from the open. Then the rosewood matures into more of a rose with suede velvet undertones and that hint of lemon still but the lemon is there just enough to make everything else pop. Really nice stuff.
I have a casual relationship with money. I really don’t care what things cost. Typically I would turn my nose up at something in this price range at face value. However, this has all of the quality I would expect from a guerlain at any price point.
Also I disagree with the idea of needing to dress up for this or any other fragrance. If your brain is fancy then that’s just who you are.

Been wearing Habit Rouge L’Eau for work just about every day since blind-buying a 1.7oz bottle last month. I’m loving HR L’Eau so darn much that the bottle is now close to 1/2 empty…or is it 1/2 full…anyway. I took a leap of faith and purchased a 3.3 bottle of HR EDP along with a 3.3oz of HR L’Eau, as I’ve fallen in deep love with it. If the EDP is even half as good as L’Eau, I’ll be thrilled. Heck, I think I’m getting psyched! :-))

Habit Rouge is Shalimar “au masculin”.
    Absolutly astonishing.

  21. :

    5 out of 5

Habit Rouge is one of those rare cases where I prefer the EdT over the EdP.
It opens with the classical HR citrusy, gourmandy opening. During this stage it still resembles the original, but this quickly fades away and is replaced with a synthetic, oudy vanilla kind of scent, very reminiscent of YSL M7. Very flat, very simple, with no development throughout the rest of its lifespan. I guess was expecting a much more complex scent, but what was I thinking? Perfumery, like any other technology, has been improving itself over the years. The M7 type of scent might have been the epitome of modern perfumery back in those days, but compared to today’s standards its just meh.

This is one of my three work-week colognes along with Yatagan and Vetiver Extraordinaire. The three smell nothing alike, of course. I have chosen these three because, unlike many colognes, they last a long while on my drier skin.
My least favorite part of Habit Rouge is the initial blast of citrus. And, it is a blast, like someone is shooting orange, lemon, and lime peels from a garden hose. I generally wait to hop into the car until the citrus subsides and I settle into the warmth of a creamy, milky, cinnamony, leathery middle. The leather is not tannery leather, but the refined leather of worn club chairs in a wood-paneled study. After some time, camphor and vanilla join the leather in a comforting, comfortable ride. I have never ventured into any of the many other Habit Rouges. In fact, I didn’t even know they existed until I searched for the EDP. I like this one and can’t find a good reason to fool around with virtual perfection.

This one had to be a grower for me. When first applied it can come across too strong with a metallic like smell. After an hour or so the magic really happens, great dry down with real rose and vanilla coming through. This really is a unique scent which is what you want. Nothing generic about this just give it a chance.

A luscious perfume. Opens on a citrusy, Turkish delight that mellows into leather and wood. Truly divine and possibly my new favorite fragrance.

    Close to a masterpiece…
I had a feeling that this one would be good. In fact, having worn Habit Rouge – Eau de Toilette over the years, this is a very smoothed out version which almost stands on it’s own as an example of a masterful work of perfumery.
I get the same notes as the Eau de Toilette but here they all resonate together in complete harmony. It’s a much deeper experience. I still have great love for the Eau de Toilette, this just has a smoother, seamless vibe which works very well. I get the rose, vanilla, tonka, lemon, lime, bergamot, and a huge dose of sandalwood, leather and other woods, along with neroli, jasmine, cinnamon and patchouli (the classic guerlainade formula at play). It’s very opulent and sensual, and you will be noticed when you wear this, as it’s not a shy perfume.
Only a little is needed to achieve the effect (as with the Eau de Toilette) so no need to over-spray here. The key here is elegance and sophistication. Some may call this “dandyish” but I don’t think that’s justified. I would say this is still (to me) the male version of Shalimar – in almost every way. It can be worn formally and is an example of real perfumery at work here. It’s great to know that this is being produced and is available for men worldwide. It is also completely unisex in my opinion. I would recommend it for anyone in their late 20’s and above. It would suit cold weather perfectly and would be great at most formal occasions.
It’s one that has to be experienced as an example of what’s possible in male perfumery, so if you have an interest in high perfume this is one that should be experienced. I also believe that with all the “niche” perfumes out there, this can compete with any of them at a great standalone price. One to try and appreciate, and wear with pride!

I really love this . It takes a delicate nose to really appreciate the finer changes this scent develops into. To me this smells like heavenly pink musk lollies or like strawberry creaming soda . My brother in-law said it smelled like toilet spray . Can’t please everybody with this one .

It’s a debate whether Guerlain is a niche or designer house, but, either way, it is a class act!
Habit Rouge EDP is a citrus top with a creamy heart and a warm base. All of this is with a spicy accord rearing from the cinnamon and basil combination.
The performance is very good and does gain positive attention from those around you. A sophisticated fragrance for the cool spring and summer days.
BTW, I agree that it is unisex.
    Guerlain, we salute you!

Ladies – try out Habit Rouge edp! This is definitely unisex. And I am saying this as a lover of heavy orentals and florals who never ever wears men’s perfumes (until now, haha) and is very sceptical of those labeled as unisex.
Habit Rouge is high quality citrusy oriental. Vanilla, carnation and rose + delicious benzoin drydown wrapped in lemon.
I can imagine this on a very self-confident and elegant man or woman.

Another blind buy since this is not available on stores in my country.
I am speechless. Very different from the EDT, much better, in one word, improved. Class in a bottle. Not dated at all. Highly recommended if you love fragances like DHI.
This is a must for collectors or any other folk that want to smell and feel great.

I’m sorry, but I can’t stand by and let someone compare this liquid gold with Old Spice! They’re either joking, or feeling rather unwell!
I’ve got a review on here somewhere, or you can find it in my reviews section. You won’t find me comparing it to any cheap and nasty post war concoctions, worn in their time by all and sundry. I wore my dad’s Old Spice as a kid, and then bought my own, so know this scent very very well.
Quality, style and scent wise, these two scents are a universe apart.

  33. :

    3 out of 5

This smell like male excellence and confidence.
This is wonderful. The smell of a renaissance man waiting for an elegant woman to descend the staircase. Dressed for dinner and an evening of laughter and conversations of art and music.
The opening is soft and sweet dusty rose accord. The blend of ingredients is very harmonious. I was immediately reminded of Old Spice, just much better. The scent lasts on my skin about 6 hours with four sprays to neck and arms another 2 sprays extends that to 12 hours.
This stands beside Guerlain Vetiver as my favorites. I see the appeal of Habit Rouge.
This smells similar to the American Old Spice dupe SPICE by Vi-Jon corporation. I buy mine at Family Dollar Stores in the USA for $2/6.75oz or 200ml. It is very close to the original Shulton Old Spice and much closer than Proctor and Gamble’s current Old Spice. Please, understand, Habit Rouge EdP is completely superior to Spice in every possible way, but I use Spice as my after shave when I wear HR EdP and they are very complementary.
I have read on forums that some think this might be the male version of Shalimar. That idea helped me decide to blind buy this. I think the link between the two scents is through the nose of the creator. I do sense a kinship, but it is common to the mid-century Guerlains. There is no male Shalimar, unfortunately.

I see many people loving and praising this fragrance. Sadly, I cannot do the same. To me it’s a dusty, yet creamy sandalwood with some rose and a hint of citrus. It’s an old fragrance for the more mature crowd, and by that I mean at least fifties, more in the direction of sixties. I can see it being good back in the 60’s when it was initially released, however it is outdated to say the least. I would not reach for this even when I’m 60, there are way better classy scents that do the same job and are nicer overall. Sorry Guerlain, not for me.

This is an amazing fragrance. As I do with all newly acquired fragrances, I sprayed a single blast on a piece of card stock and one on the back of my hand the day it arrived, this last Friday. I could still smell it on my hand Saturday morning. Here it is Monday night and the piece of card stock smells amazing! There is something very familiar left in that faint, shadowy remainder. I can’t put my finger on it. Vanillic. Some hint of spice. The ghost of Christmas-past vaporizing in the last bits of snow as it rains here tonight. It’s really wonderful. I’m going to wear it to work tomorrow.
I did wear to work 2-21-17. It didn’t project as far as I expected but I did get a close-proximity compliment ( at the 8 or so hr mark) from a girl at work. But she was pretty close to me and nearest the spot where I sprayed twice. She regularly comments on fragrances she likes, and dislikes, at least on me.

My first impression is leather all over the place. And even though it is complex, the EdP version carries the strong leather note all the way through without allowing space for the other notes…much unlike the EdT where the leather is subtle, but where, contrary to the EdP, the citrusy and flowery notes are in the foreground from the off!
    All in all, perfection!
    P.S.
Does anyone find the EdT longer-lasting than the EdP?

  43. :

WOW. I purchased this EDP as a blind buy and purchased it straight after reading in the reviews that someone mentioned it smelled like the chocolate turkish delight and i gotta say they werent wrong . I was actually a little worried about it smelling too much like a rose but this isnt like that at all . The opening is citrusy but it settles down quickly . The drydown is simply amazing deep sweet edible gourmand quality . The smell actually makes me hungry for sugared deserts . The drydown simply reminds me of the pink Musk Lollies but damn its so much more yummy than that .
    10/10
Edit my brother inlaw just smelled it said it smelled like a toilet or the water at the bottom of a garbage bags Lol . Guess it’s just not for some people hahaha .

I´ve got my bottle several days ago and I can tell that I found opening to be very close to Jicky EdP which I own as well (can feel certain “Guerlain signature” in both of them) – fruity (citrusy) topnotes with a hint of vanilla and distinctive animalic undertone. Later it settles into pleasant classic scent where vanilla is still the main component (at least on my skin) as well as some woody notes. Longevity is ok – about 8-10 hrs, projection is moderate. Although this is a matter of choice, personally I wouldn´t recommend it to anyone who is below 30, not even those classic-gentleman-wannabe-hipsters:)
    P. S. I remember trying EdT some time ago as well and found it even more vanillic and lacking this Jicky-like opening.

@Miss Shali I can only speak for the EDT – and I wouldn’t describe it as a predominantly woody scent. Its main notes are the citrus-vanilla Guerlinade accord, a strong rose note, and leather. It’s also very powdery. If your husband likes all of those things, you’ll be safe.
I note you have Shalimar, which has many similarities. Does your husband like Shalimar? Does he ever wear it? That will also give you a good idea as to whether he’ll like Habit Rouge. Perhaps put on some Shalimar and ask a few sly questions to get an idea?

I bought the edt version first and fell in love with it straight away… then bought the edp version and??? Overall both are amazing scents, will be keeping them, the edp is a bit more powdery in my opinion which is good but if I had to choose one then definitely I would go with the edt for sure as I find it for some strange reason to have way better performance then the edp, was expecting the edp to be very strong, it last Long on my skin but the projection is just average, whereas the edt is a Beast.

Guerlain’s legendary masterpiece. Opulent, sophisticated, luxurious and regal. A very complex fragrance. A elegant mix of citrus notes, patchouli, rose, leather and vanilla. After 30-40 minutes the magic starts! The middle and base are the best part. Habit Rouge is a warm and deep oriental fragrance, but the fresh elements are always present throughout the scents lifespan. Wearing Habit Rouge edp today will make you stand out from the crowd. It’s sooo sophisticated!
Some say this is for an older gentleman. I tend to disagree. This will work excellent on a 25 yrs old guy with a certain style and charisma. Women can also wear it without problems. Totaly unisex in my opinion. It can be used for casual events, but a white iron shirt is a minimum. It can also work in the warmer months due to it’s fresh notes, but go light on the trigger. This amazing fragrance from Guerlain still sells very well today, so I hope it will be available forever. Habit Rouge and Vetiver are the stars from Guerlain’s men’s line.

When this dries down, it smells like an orange wafer candy that I haven’t had in atleast 25 years. For that pleasant, unusual, very specific scent, I enjoy wearing this. I’ve sampled some of the other versions of HR and it is hard to imagine anyone not liking this fragrance. It’s an all-around fresh and mellow, softly-sweet and always pleasant smell.

The first time I tried this was in 1985, when I was an exhange-student in France. I stayed at a wonderfull french family for 2 months, and the familys son took me to a perfume shop in their hometown of Saint-Foy-La Grande. He suggested amongst others Vetiver and Habit Rouge. I was instantly in love with those fragrances and they are two of my favorites today. I am very lucky to own them both in 1980 versons.
    Lucky me.

Vintage Habit Rouge for me is Little Red Riding Hood. She walks into the forest and you can’t really tell if she’s male or female because all you see is a figure draped in a red cloak and hood which covers the face. The mysterious red hooded figure walks into the forest but never gets out of it. This is a beautiful unisex fragrance which has stood the test of time and remains one of the most beautiful 1960s creations by Guerlain. The fragrance opens with tons of citrus which I don’t care for but I survive it in order to get to the more beautiful and more comfortable middle and base notes. I smell lots of woods even from the start after the citrus wears off. I smell floral notes of carnation and rose, a jasmine and aromatic patchouli. The patchouli is in the heart so this is definitely a green scent of perfumy patchouli. But it’s blending so well with the oud and that’s a lot of oud. The spicy touches of cinnamon is also very nice. The oak moss and that hint of vanilla. I also detected some incense. It smells mysterious and dark, yet it maintains a freshness and delicacy all at once. It’s a fragrance that smells so good on me and on my friends so I constantly tell guys and girls to buy this. I would recommend this for evening wear as it is more of an evening fragrance. I have worn only the Parfum so I can’t talk about the toilette or cologne version. The perfume is more full bodied, more complex and heavier, with each note appearing and disappearing in a beautiful performance on the stage that is your skin. The sillage is great and the longevity too. Lasts more than 9 hours on me. Strong, aromatic, floral, spicy, elegant, mysterious, unisex, Oriental, and superb. It’s my Little Red Riding Hood who got lost in the woods (all the oud) and never made it to Grandma’s House.

I had a vial of this perfume. My first impression is too sharp for me at the opening. and too dark at the end. I really love this kind of scent but i just cant wear it. I felt like I’m walking in the rain at night all by my self.

    I wear this, absolutely unisex.
It’s really ruddy nice and lasts a long time but doesn’t project much. Perhaps if you got hot under the collar it would but sat around at my desk in the winter it’s a skin scent.

It’s great! In some way it seems to me a male version of Shalimar. I like the creamy note in the middle of it. I like woody base as well. I am a woman but probably will buy this for myself. I don’t like sweet fruity fragrances that are so popular now. They smell chip and synthetic. And this one smells precious and classic. It has softer note together with some masculinity. The contrast that I like. And woody, so woody…

This is a blind buy and it turned out to be an interesting one. The smell is quite different from what I usually prefer. I initially hated it. It was citrusy, soapy, sharp, a bit of tangy, and almost sour. But after wearing it for an hour, it turned into this warm, musky, powdery, masculine, and almost candy like new scent. I couldn’t stop from smelling myself and I found the new scent very comforting and relaxing. This is definitely a fragrance for the matures.

Habit Rouge reminds me of an exquisite candy that has been stored in an exotic –wood box….strange perception, but this is how I see it….I do not get the ‘blast’ of citrus, nor the cloying rose that others seem to sense, but rather both citrus and rose with their sharp edges honed down by vanilla…perfection as expected from the house of Guerlain….I can easily see this as being unisex and am somewhat surprised that it has never been positioned in this light….ladies, feel free to indulge, you will not be disappointed. A classic that others will be judged by.

Wow! This is so unique and unusual, but beautiful too.
Fresh orange citrus, with an earthy musky thrill combined.
Leather, with citrus fruits sounds odd, but it really works in an elegant, classic fashion.

I can’t believe that I put off buying this version for so long because of some of the reviews on here!
My love and admiration for the EDT version is such that “Nectar of the Gods” is my entire review!
I will update what I’m writing as soon as I’ve given this a full try, but the opening is fantastic, and half an hour in and I’m thinking that this seems to be an even better rounded, better finished offering than its iconic sibling!
    More to follow……..
40 mins in, gorgeous, rounded vanilla, and whiffs reminiscent of Tom Ford Noir!
2 hours in and this really does smell like 75% Habit Rouge (EDT) and 25% Tom Ford Noir. I’m astonished that no one has made the link with TF Noir on here, it’s really noticeable!

Now that the chilly mornings have come in early Autumn, Habit Rouge really shines.
I heartily agree with Casiquire’s review below. The colder it gets the nicer it is. Also agree that HR epd is an improvement on the vintage. They added some balsams for depth and complexity. It is not dated in a bad way. The simple charm of this true classic has remained, but some nice modernity has been added.
If you want to read a great accurate review, look at Casiquire’s review below, I couldn’t ad much more, its a great review.

What a unique, sensual journey this is. The burst of multiple citrus notes opens the elegant composition, accentuating the harmonies of the full Habit Rouge chorus with emphasis on the baritone and bass sections. It blossoms into a floral heart after about an hour, and then melts into a quiet, soothing amber that is noticeable to the person whose nose belongs near the skin of the person wearing it. It needn’t project. It’s nearly an aphrodisiac, quiet and rich.

This review is from a man who is not a fan of the original Habit Rouge at all. Well, the EDP is another story. This is like Habit Rouge – corrected. It’s still a dusty citrus opening into a floral and leathery heart and into a woody dusty vanilla end. The big difference is hard to describe. Something about the original has a sort of fabric softener vibe to it and the dustiness is quite off-putting. The opening is great but once the citrus fades the fragrance goes downhill. In the EDP on the other hand, the opening is not the strong point of the fragrance. Once it fades, the woody-rose makes a distinct Mitsouko impression, but a bit dustier and with a masculine slant. The agarwood is there but I might not have noticed it if I didn’t know it was there. It gives a faintly peppery impression.
I know others who have worn this and the fragrance, soft-textured as it is, does actually project. It lasts a good while too. My only warning about it is the fact that it gets better and better the colder it gets. It’s not that it gets cloying, but warm weather seems to change something about the smell. It turns into cherry Dr Pepper somehow. Not even just on my skin, this happenened to the other guys I know who have worn this out as well. It may be the bergamot.
There is too much going on here to really give a good impression just using words, so I suggest testing it. It’s not an “old” fragrance either and I generally really don’t like aging fragrances. I’m 26, and I’ve been wearing it for a while. Definitely get a sample. Even if you don’t choose to wear it, the fragrance is so well-done that it needs to be experienced.
February 2017 Edit: I wish the fragrance would come clean about the “sandalwood” note. There’s essentially no sandalwood at all, it’s amyris. Amyris has a waxy-woody scent and this EDP has an overload of it. It’s detectable at the start, and in the drydown provides both the “vetiver” and “sandalwood” accor
