Versus Uomo Versace for men of Versace

Share:

Description

Versus Uomo, the legendary male perfume classified as fresh – woody – oriental, was introduced in 1991, a year before its female pair, the red Versus Donna perfume. Very masculine and attractive, it greets you with a fresh and sweet pleasure of mandarin, lime, bergamot, green notes, shiny lemon, lavender, orange and oil essence of petit grain (citrus). The heart ticks with peppery bitter – floral notes of carnation, coriander, sweet and clear jasmine, mildly earth notes of orrisroot, palisander and rose wood. The base is warmly – soft but intensive, thanks to amber, benzoin, cedar, musk, sandalwood, Tonka and vanilla. The bottle form is the same as Versus Donna’s, only in dark blue glass with a blue stopper.

This perfume would even smell better after the next day! It smells good fresh, but after a few hours kr’s irresisyeible. I would literally get pulled aside by girls asking me what perfume I was wearing…
I used to have a spot were you could get them for 20 bucks, I just soent almost 80 on one on Ebay… but it’s worth it!
I hope it’s a marketing scheme and they bring it back eventually

Its quite possibly the most bad ass fragrance ever made. This is not a biker “hear my loud engine” kind of bad ass. Nor is it a muscle head t-shirt three times too small bad ass. Nope that’s not the vibe of this fragrance. Rather, guys that would wear this is the toughest guy in the room yet the quietest. His confidence is real but not arrogant. He doesn’t need to show off his tattoos or muscles. Nor does he need to ride his “look at me” Harley. Versus Uomo is the masculine gentlemen kind of bad ass. The scent is fresh but rugged, classy but dirty, if that makes sense. It’s hit or miss with the ladies… It’s not a crowd pleaser. But the ladies that love this on a guy is the kind of ladies you want!

Oh man, this is the stuff of my youth….it’s been discontinued I had my first bottle from 1997 till about 2005 in my stable and it was my GO-TO date scent….it was the kind of scent (and still is if you can find it) that drove women crazy at the time, it was unique and I feel like I didn’t know many people that wore it at the time, but such a compliment getter…. it’s very dark, mysterious, citrusy, jasmine, incensey a bit, perfectly balanced hint of sweetness, never got cloying, even if you spray too much it mellows out and leaves this aura… it’s freakin sexy, in my opinion it’s a 90s masterpiece and it’s worth getting prices aren’t too bad, found one on FragranceNet recently and man….it still smells good, I wore this and my wife (who never smelled this on me as I never had it with her till recently) to her it may as well be love potion number 9…she says it’s my F* me fragrance and she can’t help it…..we’re in our mid 30s…. this is classic stuff

I have original samples and this is the description on the card: A dash of citrus fruits and Mediterranean notes: lemon, orange, bergamot. A fruity heart of papaya and ground nutmeg with a harmonious blend of woods, vetyver and strong tobacco. A fresh, decisive perfume with personality.
I have the bar soap with the case. Lost its scent but good quality soap nonetheless. This is a bold men’s scent. Ruggedly seductive.

i think this is the most modern discontinued fragrance i ever smelled.it’s strange because it has something from the 90’s but a young guy of today can wear it easily. it’s a young bad boy fragrance, a fresh mandarin slap in your face, with a fantastic combination of lavender and floral notes. you want to wear a leather jacket or show your muscles when u’re using this scent!there’s nothing so unique for the young crowd on the shelves nowadays, versus uomo is a truly masterpiece and im so happy to have it in my little collection. season: all, better in spring or summer nights. occasions: rock concerts, pub or nightout. un profumo al “testosterone”!

For me, the scents put out during Gianni Versace’s life were the absolute best, IMO. This was definitely one of them. Bright citrus with a multitude of spices and florals (carnation & jasmine) that’s blended so harmoniously. It gave me the air of really good potpourri which I recall was all the rage back in the early 90’s. I will always feel fondly about this scent. I’m glad it can be still found online if you look hard for it. “Viva la Versus!”

The coolest juice ever!! Just purchased 2 back up bottles of this truly glorious fragrance in NYC. Nothing beats the rugged masculine vibe this one projects! Timeless and always modern. Gianni Versace at its very best!!!

Versus Uomo is an underrated gem of a perfume – I remember visiting Italy when this came out and then soon after that owning my first bottle of it – looking at it now I think this is really a great evidence of a particularly interesting time in perfumery – late 80’s early 90’s, when the difference from one release to the next of a house still was often a significant step into something different – think here of the great difference between Versace’s L’Homme and Versus Uomo – and at the same time, when the molecular scope of building blocks introduced something new, even in such a classical field of an aromatic scent. Simply gorgeous, and nice packaging / bootle on top !

These were the days when Versace ruled the world, and it was evident on the quality of his juices, not the crap its sold today with the medusa-stamped on the box to give it some “glamour”. I was not an original fan because I was very young and this smelled waaaay to mature for me then. Fast forward, these are my “mature” impressions:
Versus reminds me of another juice from another Italian titan of the time: GFF UOMO by Ferre. Of course, Versus is like 6 years earlier than GFF, but they share that rosey, creamy, citrusy vibe. Versus gives you rosewood, GFF gives you rose. I read somewhere in this forum that GFF was Ferre’s way to court the Middle Eastern market, and one just wonders if Versace’s intent with this fragrance may have been similar. Clearly, the marketing of the time hinted at very attractive and muscular bike dudes, so go figure. There is also a lineage that goes all the way back to the great Habit Rouge, especially on the drydown.
In short, this is a delicious cream Italian soda. I get a very citrusy opening, a little off putting at first, but then the lavander and the rosewood emerges and it settles down on an amazing creamy sandalwood and vanilla drydown. I would say this is a very woody and floral juice, something that could be used year round and would make you feel elegant and sophisticated. Definitely worth experiencing, and current prices are extremely affordable.
    Smell great, my friends.

The best of the 90’s, nothing will ever bring this back not even latest perfumes in the market today. That’s why the 90’s is a triumph to live and enjoy.

If any one remembers Calvin by Calvin Klein of the 80’s, Versus could be its cousin. Its a mild blend of well tamed citrus mixed with very mellow spices. Soft and soapy but rich enough to be a man’s cologne. Like many old enough, I remember having this in college and partying hard and hitting the clubs with this sprayed (probably too heavily) on. A safe blind buy if you’ve never smelled it and happen to see a vintage bottle on line, I say go for it. Thumbs up.

  18. :

I bought a bottle of this blind based on all the positive reviews. I’m not detecting any lemon or pine notes, I don’t know if I got a bad bottle or what. It does not remind me of Chanel Pour Monsieur Concentree. It reminds me most of Oscar De La Renta Pour Lui or other similar powerhouses of 70s/80s. Not a fan.

  19. :

Not bad, although I get a bit of a dish-soap-mixed-with-potpourri scent that turns me off to it somewhat.

A beautiful piece of Maison Versace. Incredible as it takes me back to Pour Monsieur Concentreé. Lavender is prominent in both fragrances, while Versus has a citrus-fruity background, Pour Monsieur Concentreé has a moss-citric background. PMC was launched in 1989 and Versus in 1991.Would Versus Uomo was inspired by Pour Monsieur Concentré ???

  21. :

I remember when i first used this one in 1993, i was finishing my engineering bachelor degree and was doing a lot…and i mean, a lot of clubing and partying. This was my go to fragrance, and was always a big hit with the ladies. It always reminded me of a softer and brighter Zino by Davidoff.
About 3 month ago, and to muy surprise, found 2 bottles at a local perfume distributor. 24.99 us each…so obviously, got them without thinking it twice.
It is exactly as i remember it, no change whatsoever. This opens with a sour and tart lemon popsicle burst…but mixed with spices, and i can almost swear it is cinammonn. After 30 minutes, the lavender dominates, but mixed perfectly with the woody, ambery and creamy vanilla base. The lemon is still there, but in the background.
This is very….very masculine, long lasting and projects like what it is….another 90s masterpiece. Now, does it still reminded me of a softer and brighter Zino….you bet it still does.

This expression can be applied in so many cases for me that it’s already overused, but do you know that perfume which don’t give anything for it and end being very surprised with? It was the case for me with Versus Uomo, almost now an obscure Versace scent that you barely hear anyone commenting. But they should since Versus is able to marry the best of two worlds in its oriental citrus harmony: the refreshing citruses, sometims very light and others more bitter, and the sweet complexity of the oriental structure. It’s one of those fragrances that seems just a machine so well constructed that you enjoying pushing the button and seing it work just to admire its engines moving perfectly. This is a machine that works like a crescending scale of oriental tonalities, shy at the beginning, where the citrus which i mentioned reigns, and getting warming slowly on skin without having none abrupt phase. I like the lemon, the bitter petitgrain, the floral neroli hints, and this together with the spicy clove touch makes me think of high quality classic citrus. What makes it different for me is the floral part, the earthy and creamy orris and the base made of vanilla, tonka, cedar and rosewood, giving it a sweet, woody and creamy touch. It’s a very beautiful perfume, don’t let the lack of hype or pedigree fool you.

  25. :

Versace is one of my favorite houses, so I was very excited to receive this. The top notes on me are sharp, sweet lemon with some musk. After 45 minutes this settles down to well blended, woody , spicy long lasting scent. Versus is powerhouse so go easy on the trigger . Probably better for fall and winter. In short… They don’t make them like this any more.

I had this back in high school in the 90’s. I felt very unique wearing this as everyone else had either drakkar, CW or ck one/be on. I got so many compliments back in the day and this will always hold a warm spot in my heart as my junior year signature scent and proms and all that stuff.
Now for the fragrance. this is so hard to describe as I’ve never smelled anything like it before or since. All I can say is that it had a very European vibe to it. Very sophisticated and sexy smell. I really need to revisit this one.

Still saw in stores of new old stocks. It came to USD 35 for the large bottle. The scent is so unique, up until today 2014 I never ever seen one scent similar to this.
    That’s why I repeatedly quote as score 1-10, I give 11.

One of the brightest diamonds during the golden decade of fragrances. Really amazing. I want this precious juice immediatly. It came in my hands many many years ago when i did not know how to appreciate it because i was young and not expert with different tastes but now i know that it created to make a loudly statement to everybody by saying “i am here,i am unique, i don’t care what do you think about me because nothing is like me”…and that still remains.
SO IT SHALL BE WRITTEN,SO IT SHALL BE DONE!!!!

Just got this one today, it is fantastic. This is unique, like nothing you have ever smelled. Absolutely a classic scent, Gianni Versace a true genius. So much complexity on this one, and its class comes from the old days of Italy when fragrances where complicated to make and designers strived for excellence. Opens very fresh, and quickly transforms into a dark, aromatics scent. The base reminds me of old, dry, pine with a sub-layer of floral that creates an aromatic display. It is basically the outcome of chaos and peace together, also very sexy. If you can grab a bottle of this, youw won’t be disappointed.

I first bought this many years ago and i didn’t have a “nose” back then so I just said blehh and gave it away. I bought it again a couple of days ago after months of scrutinizing reviews here and at basenotes and I went holy Crap!! How could have passed this by all these years. I immediately realized its ancestor might have been Zino (Davidoff) and Its offspring could very well be Mesmerise (Avon). One measure of aromatic fragrances with that “dirty note” is how they perform at high temps like we have up here. It could go either way, like turn into something vile and pungent or in this case with Versus Uomo The heat literally cleans up the fragrance erasing most of the “dirty note” leaving a dry woody musky base. Who can argue with that?

  35. :

    4 out of 5

I first received this as a gift and I didn’t like the box, so when I tested it, I had a preconceived negative impression and I didn’t like it, so it sat for a while. I was ready to start using it for my car/bed – I would use colognes I didn’t like for this. When I sprayed it, I thought it was pretty good. I tested it on me and I liked it a lot. I started using it quite a bit and I received many compliments from women. This is a winner!
I’m on my second bottle and I still like it – in fact it’s one of my favorites. One thing I like is that I don’t think many other guys wear it, so I think of it as my personal scent. My girlfriend likes it, which is also a plus.
How would I describe it? Very complex, woodsy, slightly floral and citrus, hint of vanilla and jasmine with an ever so slight pepper. Very subtle with a cool sapphire blue ambiance (maybe it’s my memory linking the scent and the dark blue bottle?)

The genious style of the late Gianni Versace shines through this! Amazing fragrance! Wore it in ’92 and keep returning to it. I too remember the 1 page adds in the Italian papers in 1991, this was heavily promoted! Fresh yet dark, spicy yet energizing it has a great character and makes you stand out in a crowd. Strong projection and very good longevity. Even though they discontinued it, it has stood the test of time and in my opinion a comeback would be well deserved! A perfect Day & Night wear for somebody who has the personality to match this outstanding fragrance! Who is the nose behind this masterpiece?

It is better if this Versus is re-created, but let the formula remains the same, don’t let the formula changed. Let the bottle be the same, perhaps a little modification required.
I can never find a replacement to this, so there will only be one Versus

Got a bottle today, i don’t know what year this bottle is produced but when i opened the box, tried and i don’t resist. It smell exactly like the one i purchased in 1992. If i have to describe it, there’s no words would describe and from scale 1 to 10, i’ll give it 11.
    Great and just great…

Are you searching for a perfume that is completely great from top, heart to base? This is it. Non-cloying, super fresh, balmy, herbal, soapy, woody and soft spicy.
It is simply Timeless and pure Madness. I have never encounter a perfume that smells similar with this.
It amazed me magnanimously, sniff addictive and such a sexy, winter/fall fragrance that definitely would be noticed by men and more so by women.
This is the scent of a lifetime, at least one of the so few in perfume history that will leave beautiful memories and special connections due to its very unique, very much refined mixed of notes and main accords. I say no niche, arabic and designer perfumes has captured my admiration and praise re: perfume pyramid but this Versace Uomo.
I shall award this as the most perfect perfume by top-base performance. Another successful blind buy!
A masterpiece and a well deserved monument by its own on perfume history.
    Scent 9.5/10
    Sillage 9/10

Coolness a la Gianni Versace! This really has it! The lemon, the pine, the things in between, so cool & so different! It has a sort of classic old school vibe to it but its all done in a typical Italian way so its never offputting but has a strong personality. I remember the Italian Gazzettas were all over with 1 page adverts of this babe in 1991. The cap bears Gianni’s signature so that alone makes a clear, quality statement.

Versus by Versace is one of those scents like bomb or A * MEN Joop Homme, and should be rested in a drawer with the double bottom in that they are very uplifting fragrances that are used with due caution, the scent in question does not even remember the most have it, and it was only thanks to a dream that I remembered the opening reminds a little citrus Boucheron pour Homme, but the heart is really pure velvet, balsamic, woody and the dark and dense resin and vanilla it is one of the best 90 years, persistence is good, used in winter becomes truly exceptional, despite the years always retains a great personality, but I think it should be used with discretion or you could have the opposite effect.
    wonderful

I’m not sure what this is trying to be. It has almost a chypre structure with the same lemon as the opening of the 70’s original Gucci Pour Homme, but that is the only thing they have in common. This has an overpowering vanilla note that pours over into everything, and really makes this sort of synthetic stink bomb in my opinion. It is not horrible, but it just goes together a little rough and unnatural. If you are looking for an almost gourmandish lemon vanilla type fragrance, then you might want to consider this one…other than that, I can’t imagine anyone will love this sticky scent, but I think the lemon pie with woods likeness is apt.

I have to disagree with Mr Da-veed and say that this legendary men’s scent smells nothing like the new (2008) Versace Pour Homme. Versus Uomo has a distinctive smooth lemony-piney smell with outstanding sillage whereas VPH smells almost identical to Armani’s Acqua Di Gio to my nose. I’d say this is an all seasons’ scent that performs excellently in all temperatures and lasts for months when sprayed on clothing. VU is definitely recommended if you can find it.

  50. :

    5 out of 5

There’s a big difference in projection (“sillage”) between the opening and the drydown, to such a degree that I find it quite irritating. I don’t like the strength of the woody and ambery/vanillic notes nor the strong citrus/pine, and I find the creamy quality irritating as well. There is “dirty jasmine” that makes this feel “old fashioned” too, but the lavender creates a note clash. So, my verdict is that this is too unbalanced for me, and the drydown is too weak. If you like “spiky” fragrances, with notes that seem stronger than they should be, then this might be for you. Colours for Men by Julian is a smoother scent of this type, so that’s the one to look for unless you really want strong citrus at first.

I love this cologne! I used to wear it back in 1992- 1995, but stopped using it when they stopped selling it in department stores. I didn’t even know they still made it until I saw it online. I was going to buy it on ebay but was hesitant as you never really know if you’re getting real or fake, but to my pleasant surprise I realised that the new Versace Pour Homme is the same fragrance or almost exactly the same in a new, classier bottle! I love it and it takes me back. Great fragrance!

Out of all my versace experience, this is the best fragrance for guys. Never bored, never outdated. The scent is so distinctive, you will immediately catch it airborne. Bravo! Too bad it’s no longer in the market.

  54. :

    Brilliant!
For me it is another Aramis 900 (the top-rated fragrance by my girl). Versus Uomo is identical minus the herbal features as it is more refreshing and bit friuty, also at dry down its bit different may be because of vanila and tonka..
Whatever but it is a nice addition and i am glad i found it even when it is disconnected.

perfume rare, we seem to have recently withdrawn from production.
Arrangement complex – fondant and cosmetics and naphthalene in the beginning, but after a very nice – fruit, wood, classic, do not look like anything from perfume, fragrance landmark, resistant.
Accurately conveys the style of early 90s from Gianni Versace.

  56. :

nice fragrance in the old school way: strong, woody, intesive but still pleasant in the same time. for me it has sth from kouros ( right, right – those “stinky” scent 😉 ) and egoiste (rosewood).
i can imagine that T-800 from “Terminator 2” was wearing this scent 😉
