This is a great dark rosey scent and resembles the original close, but:
Beware for sellers who sell this under the “vintage” label!!
When it is “made in Italy” it is not vintage. This is stil widely available for cheap. There are two “made in Italy” versions, one with a light brown cap and one with a black cap.
The vintage Ungaro III is produced in 1993 and is “made in France”. Also the other 2, Ungaro I (1991 dark red bottle, green cap)and Ungaro II (1992 blue bottle , yellow cap).
So only the “made in France” is vintage and created by Chanel (Jacques Polge) for Ungaro at that time.

If you already own a bottle of Oscar Gentlemen, then this is a redundant purchase.
I have just tested both fragrances on my wrists and the scent is like 90% similar
If I had to choose one of them, I would probably choose Oscar Gentlemen

I think this scent is the definition of “it grows on you”. The top notes from the first spray come off extremely distinct and reminds me of an old era scent DNA. In my mind I see an older demographic rocking this fragrance, 30+. . .
It lingers very nicely and the dry down really takes you on a roller coaster of notes. My favorite is when its stuck on the base notes because the sandalwood and oak moss pair perfectly together. My 8th time wearing this was finally when I decided it wasnt a regret buy. (Not a reccomended blind buy, despite YouTube reviews). In any case, it’s a cheapie so no harm done to the wallet, lol.

As it turns out, Ungaro III is surprisingly light and airy. That shiny black bottle with bold, gold accents might lead you to believe that this is a dark, brooding masculine powerhouse. But make no mistake: The only thing dark about Ungaro III is the packaging. Even its boozy element is a light, fresh vodka with wafts of equally fresh rose. Ungaro III is modern without being unoriginal—classic without being stuffy or dated. It’s a year-round masculine aromatic that stays close to the skin with enough refinement, sex-appeal and sophistication to effortlessly go from office to dinner date. Quite nice, indeed.

Ok so I blind bought this scent and tried it on my skin; I must say that it is smooth to my nose. I thought it was going to be almost on the same lines as Obsession by Calvin Klein or maybe something darker but it has it’s very own character. I recommend any man to buy this fragrance.

A great fragrance! A classic that smells as relevant today as it did when it came out in the 90s. Very elegant. A gentlemen’s scent. Longevity medium. Sillage good.

Ungaro III is a dry yet a little sweet juniper berries/gin scent made quite aromatic by a rose and/or geranium plus lavender combo! I can also detect a touch of mild coriander at first which is quite a unique spice smell-wise. Underneath that I get a leathery, non-hippie preeminent patchouli note in the base along with subtle woods, probably sandalwood, and it is definitively still warm from the juniper/gin main note to my nose.
The result is classy, masculine and mature yet to me not dated and almost gives a “cozy”, inviting barbershop for gentlemen vibe. I could see it as a darker more grown-up relative to a fragrance like the much fresher Declaration d’un Soir by Cartier. Also if Zino by Davidoff is a favorite of yours you could truly enjoy this one! (It is “younger” than the Zino’s and I like Ungaro a lot more). Without using the same ingredients I also believe Guerlain’s Homme Intense uses a similar recipe. Guerlain’s quality is higher though.
While this one is not for me it doesn’t take anything away from it. If you love warm, dry, spicy and aromatic fragrances with a dressed-up feel, give this one a test, it could surprise you.

This is a boozy masculine rose cologne. I detect mainly rose and vodka (two interesting and unusual notes in a masculine fragrance) on the opening, but with strong hints of sandalwood, lavender, and patchouli as well on the drydown (while the vodka somewhat disappears). This is definitely a ‘night-out’ fragrance, and leans masculine though could be used by women due to its sweetness. It reminds me a lot of Swiss Arabian’s ‘Sultan’ attar, possibly due to the sweet sandalwood mixed with rose. The vodka is very sweet while the rose and lavender and woody accord from the sandalwood and patchouli are also quite prominent. Sillage is very good while longevity is also strong. Overall this is an ok masculine rose cologne for men with an air of mystique and good performance (and for only around $25 for 100 ml too). This is not that similar to Cartier Declaration d’un Soir (another one of my favourites) at all even though it has prominent rose and sandalwood notes. I would say it’s very similar to Swiss Arabian’s Sultan attar. I don’t know of any other fragrances featuring vodka as a note though, so it’s pretty unique. But overall I am not that impressed to be honest.
    3.5/5
I am reviewing the “Gold is Bold” limited edition by the way (but I’ve heard it’s identical to the regular version).

This is 90’s classic, one of the very best I have smelt of its kind.
Rose, lavender, leather, peppers, patchouli, sandalwood – all the classic 90’s must-blends in the right percentage, that is friendly to the nose, mind and soul. This is what makes Ungaro L’homme III still smells relevant today.
The drydown smells like Burberry Men EDT, but more raw, crisp, mature by a few years.
Projection is moderate to strong. Longevity is fantastic.
I miss Ungaro. It’s great to learn that Ferragamo saves this treasure.

Just ignore the comments regarding the superiority of the vintage potion. The current formula made by Salvatore Ferragamo is as good as the old one, the magic accord of vodca, rose and leather is there, as briliant as ever.

This is unbelievable, most heavenly, most enchantied, yet so gentle and super manly Rose fragrance.. I wonder what it was before all these reformulations and sintetic substituting on ingredients started.. it probably was the final success of the Alchemy.. it is still a perfection even in present, weak and sintetic era of colognes.. when I read negative reviews I wonder if there’re more than one reformulated versions.
I don’t know how to talk “cool” and appeal to you, guys, in calm manner to try it..
This was fragrance that once caused the lady, who happened to be near me, to open her eyes wide and turn her beautiful face to me, subconsciously! – and I am not kinda guy who just does it by “default” LOL; and you know what? – that was enough to cross the line of indifference for further conversation and interaction..
I think – this one truly deserves to be referred as “jewel” – many refer to fragrances here this way. Please try it when you have chance.
I don’t think it’s “clubby” though. Not sporty, not for “gym” either. When you’re driving your truck or meeting friends for beer – it’s not the time to wear it.. I think it’s for times when you want to open your heart to someone, to dare to hold hands, to close eyes and kiss.. or just to express that you yearn for all that when you are alone.
Ingredients here are transmuting into each other.. I can’t separate them, they are all like shades and petals of the perfect rose – not oriental, not overwhelming and poisonous, not voluptuous, not lipstick-like.. rose that is male gender, that reflects gentle and understanding sides of man, that is bringing sense about man as of not superficial and temporary. Your woman will love it. Try.

A classic, this is sophistication in a bottle,I’m a 49 year old man and a lover of fragrances since a teenager i currently have Ysl L’homme,Armani Diamonds just to name a few so you can see were I’m coming from and this bad boy launched in 1993 hangs with the best of today’s frags,I’m not one to mention notes and chemical composition like many nerds here i believe people don’t want to hear that they just want an honest take on a specific fragrance and this beauty is what i put on when I’m dressed up and ready to go with my sugar to a special occasion. Get it!!!!

(my review originally appeared on basenotes)
    Of course it is fantastic.
Ungaro III is a very special scent, because it is modern yet at the same time decadent, lush and sensual yet masculine, tame at times yet underneath its cover, it is very provocative. I am one of those people who think that this is a very dark scent, and very smooth. I am sure it is one of the types of fragrances that women love a lot on men.
The opening is woodsy, spicy and citrus-y at the same time. This is a very refreshing idea for an opening: being very bold and multi-layered with varying ingredients. Vodka is an interesting note here. I know that most people usually detest this note if it is too raw, and why shouldn’t they? But here, it seems to be broken down so well with lavender, that it reads as a note that adds an original dryness to the opening.
I think this scent is dark, not necessarily because of the combination of notes, but because of the idea behind it. There is something almost primeval and raw about it, at the same time it is obvious that the notes are meticulously mixed to create a very ethereal experience. It smells real and natural: there is nothing synthetic about the scent. I think what is the boldest move on the fragrances part is its heart notes which are all flowers! The much-discussed roses of this scent are very powerful, but they are not the pink/white innocent roses of YSL Paris. They are -what they must be- black and very dark maroon roses with a vengeance. They smell very cruel, and unforgiving, and move on your body like a ghost.
The scent has a very dark spirit to it: something creeping near behind almost, kind of sinister. I do not understand how people can say that this is a cheerful scent: on my skin, it is a total seducer who wants to get his next victim. It wants to attract people: it WANTS to be recognized and appreciated. The base of the scent is musky indeed with mossy woods and patchouli. It is an elegant part of the equation and compliments the roses very very well.
It is a skillful scent with a bold statement to make, and I would say I see this scent in the same category as Narcisso Rodriguez for Men (with heavy violets in that one rather than roses), Opium pour Homme (the infamous anise/vanilla combination) and Le Baiser du Dragon by Cartier. These all do not necessarily smell alike, make no mistake, but they are all mystical scents that feel raw and animalic enough to be deemed otherworld-ly, but elegant enough to be appreciated for their genuine beauty and darkness. Actually, I feel like this scent smells kind of close to even legendary Aramis with the musky, patchouli and woods combination along with the common green notes like vetiver and moss, and the un-feminized flowers.
Don’t know, maybe it is just my nose.
The bottle is fantastic and very very chic by being jet-black with gold accents, and it matches the juice inside. And the way you almost uncork the cap is also stunning and a nice detail. Overall, one of the best scents around, and one that I am sure I will enjoy for many years to some.

To me it was quite disappointing. I was was very anxious ´to have a scent with vodka and rose… but I didn’t get any of those 2. I barely got any sage and that didn’t even last too long.

Don’t let the people that claim you need to get the original discourage you from trying the latest release. Far too many times I fell for that nonsense and hunted down vintage bottles only to find out the differences were so subtle nobody even noticed. Ungaro is no different. I have both the original from France, and the latest version with the large numbers III on the box and bottle. I purchased the latest version because my vintage bottle was getting low, only to find out they are virtually identical. The only difference I noticed is the original lasts a little longer and projects slightly more. I’m done listening to people here saying how vintage is superior on certainty fragrances because 8 out of 10 times the scent is the same and the only difference is the performance. Nearly all houses have toned down their fragrances to meet market demands. Most people nowadays don’t need or want to fill a room with their SOTD

This actual review is for the Gold and Bold release, that I am wearing today, and I do not see it yet listed on the site.
I bought the Gold & Bold just curios about if it was a really new addition to the regular formula which was in my top favorites back in the 90’s and always grab compliments every time I wore it, but I do not notice too much difference between both, besides the difference on the golden packing and cap, well I did not put both bottles back to back I just remembered I got the new version and that I had and I had not worn it yet.
After almost 5 hours, I would say it has a shorter longevity that the regular Ungaro III and about sillage probably shorter as well.
It would good to read to some reviewers here that had compared both.
    Update”:
I did compare both later tonight and I my older bottle was more potent and I would say a better smell from the Bold and Gold, probably my regular bottle is kind of vintage now since I have it at least for four years.. maybe.. but I do remember the older version when the bottle used to come with a red cap, that was the one that drew compliments all the time.

aT FIRST I WAS put off by this fragrance.
But once it dried down it was a kind scent.
It’s no beast, but don’t over spray it.
It will stink once you go passed three sprays.
    I wouldn’t buy this again.
And this is going to last a long time in my collection.

Everything in this fragrance blends perfectly imo. The floral are mild yet noticeable. I was worried about the booze note making me smell like I have been drinking, it doesn’t, it mixes beautifully with the floral and wood. Excellent price and a must for any man’s wardrobe.

Years ago as a young lad I stepped into the world of perfumes through ungaro pour L’homme 1991. That was a genuine masterpiece, an ultimate end for the floral rose based colognes. Unfortunately discontinued it is now a rarity, only to be purchased with a high price .
Ungaro III pursues the ungaro pour L’ homme 1991 tradition but with a weaker body and more rose aroma. A modest substitue for that famous one, and for me a reminder of that unforgettable gem. Whenever I apply ungaro III a sense of melancholy engulfs me, because of the wonderful memories I had with the original one that I will have no chance of their repeat, but anyhow this available version is not bad at all, it is in fact one of the best rose perfumes for men.
A gentleman with a suit will match up with this cologne, sure it is not a sport perfume to be worn by a young fellow, it needs a man of distinguished character and sensibilty to show its capabilities.

We have the ORIGINAL version of this fragrance and my husband smells divine with it on. It is so perfect for his body chemistry that it is probably the only fragrance that has this kind of affect on me and others. It is spectacular. It also lasts through showers for two days minimum.
I rarely react to fragrance on my husband like this one causes me to react. As for older person- he has been wearing this since he was young and it was still sophisticated on him then. People think he is famous all of the time and this scent definitely adds to that effect.
From descriptions, I am thinking the new one will be nothing like it used to be so he will have to ration the old one even more saving it for special occasions.

I’m a rose lover but since I have such conservative ideas 🙂 I believed that rose is in territory of feminine scents, honestly I thought a rosey male fragrance is not a good idea and I hated the only rose dominant male fragrance I’ve tested before, dsquared royal black
Ungaro III taught me my lesson, this is lovely!
It opens with dominant lavender and citrus notes and just a hint of watery vodka..since I love lavender in male Colognes I enjoy the opening part but main story just begins when the floral heart blooms, ofcourse rose is superstar, but not a delicate feminine rose,it doesn’t remind rosewater either, this is a dark, masculine rose blooming mysteriously on a woodsy base
It’s sophisticated and sensual, this IS floral, rosey and has a warm, sweet undertone but is nothing near feminine,it’s manly even in a sexy way
I love it when a scent is fresh and warm the same time, this one has this quality and is wearable year round,it’s not a very young, sporty, boyish fragrance,it’s manly and better for +25
Longevity and sillage are more than moderate
    ❤❤❤❤

August 2016. Definitely reformulated around 2015/2016.
Still a hint of the old Ungaro III but now it has become a very offensive cheap lavender and musk fragrance. I am currently heartbroken.

Ungaro III is simply the best boozy floral aromatic scent because, frankly, it really is the only boozy floral aromatic. It truly is quite unique.
The vodka note at the beginning is very intense. On my skin, it’s a watery alcohol note that is almost aquatic. Next comes the floral notes and spices, dominated by that gorgeous rose. The aromatic green heart is pleasant, with the florals and spices lingering throughout.
Sadly, I can’t wear this unique scent because the intense vodka note doesn’t sit right with me. It’s not unpleasant, but it also doesn’t wow me – and such a dominant note has to impress. Regardless, Ungaro III is an impressive and unique work of perfumery – and because it can still be had for a steal, it’s worth a try.

  32. :

Ahh the famous Ungaro III… I got myself the bottle with the three big I’s and this is what I think.
Scent. I thought this was going to be something that would absolutely blow my mind but when I finally got a hold of it, reminded me of a cheap clone perfume called “Dark Rose”. I am sure it must be some cheap molecule that was used a lot in the 90’s, some mix of super E ISO probably since it has like a cardboard kind of smell. Moving along, the rose starts to make its way, and this is not a light rose, its dark and harsh, like the one found Declaration d’un Soir. Honestly, I did not like this part, I would have settled with just the opening.
    Projection. Average.
Longevity. Below average designer performance but don’t fret, just layer it with Super E Iso and you should be good.

I was too young in 1993 to have known the original formula so I will talk about the new one.
MINDBLOWN O_O !!! Omg… This is what I call an awesome yet “cheap” masterpiece nowadays. It has everything what an aromatic gem should have. Floral and woody at its finest. All these flowers give to this one a gentle, soft and “feminine” touch, enhanced by the woody counterpart, thanks to the cedar, the coriander and the vetiver.
The perfect balance for a gentleman perfume, respectful about the feminine side in every man. Not like these ones nowadays which shout “Look ! i’m an obnoxious playboy whom play with girls like tools !” These ones which are nothing but something which shout “SEXBOMB, SEXBOMB, SEXBOMB !”
And gosh, the signature note, the vodka ! THAT vodka ! Which gives to this masterpiece the unique touch to this versatile and complete mixture.
10 out of 10. Thanks Ungaro for making yet these forgotten 80/90’s androgynous smells. These ones which capture what a man should be. Being a man is to be respectful of ladies and assuming our feminity, not being a male with balls and testosterone.

FINALLY!!! I laid my hands on a 1993 Ungaro III Original Formula (Red box, red cap, made in france). So this review is for the ORIGINAL 1993 FORMULA:
The first time i bought Ungaro III was in the mid 2000’s based on reviews and recommendations from here. I really like it! i knew it was a reformulation but i couldn’t get the original. As I said, i like it, i finished the bottle and never bought it again. It was a nice fragrance, nothing else, but i couldn´t get my mind off that original formula…
So, one month ago a friend of mine from France that is a fragrance enthusiast said to me “My friend, i have a NIB 1993 Ungaro III”, immediately I said “SEND IT TO ME!” It was 150 USD but what the heck…
As soon as i got the box i sprayed two times on my wrist… I have to say i got dissapointed by the opening, it smelled almost identical to Polo Green… Too much wood, none of the roses or vodka everybody was talking about… 20-30 minutes after… OH MY GOD… I cannot describe this otherwise than PERFECTION… It settled down amazingly!! The rose note burst out, vodka, lavender and some coriander. 3-4 hours and it evolves into some kind of musky-citrusy-cozy smell. It has an amazing power and sillage, women loves it… It really is ONE HELL OF A FRAGRANCE…
    Scent 10/10
    Sillage 10/10
    Duration 10/10
Reformulated Ungaro III it’s ok; but if you like it and can lay hands on an original 1993 formula GO FOR IT. Be cautious though… There are some “original batches” made in Italy with red box but black cap. It’s not the same juice I’m talking about. Check those three elements: red box, red cap and made in France.
    UPDATE
So I decided to save my original 1993 formula and buy one of the actual bottles. So disapointed… I’m talking the new formula that comes in a black box with a big gold III on the front. It’s still Ungaro III but the longevity and sillage are just awful and smells like watered down… I have 2 NIB with cellophane last formula (black box but with the III in bright black) for sale. If anybody is interested message me. I’m in Mexico.

A classic and classy spicy aromatic opening. But somehow muted and numb. Like meeting an intelligent friend who got too drunk.
It’s dark and soft. But too diluted, and light. Like meeting some young gothic chic who smiles too much.
Ungaro III is a rose with bright red petals, green stem and black leaves. But no thorns.

The rose not reminds me of the mango in Paris Hilton Man. No doubt I’d choose this one over PHM since it is a refined fragrance and has a darker note most likely attributed to the wood note. Must buy cheapie!

UNGARO III, it’s listed as an AROMATIC, I guess what puts it in this category is the vodka.
I’m surprised that some people think of it as a cooler weather scent. It’s airy, light, vodka-esque with a light rose in the background.
I can see why some might think of “bug spray” upon initial application. It eventually smooths out though and just stays airy and, to me, seems close to the skin.
I get a soft-pink-rose note in that background. Not feminine though, at least to me.
Summer or Spring, I will definitely be wearing this.

    A beautiful floral woody aromatic.
Ungaro III opens with an alcoholic and aromatic tone, vodka stands out and combines with citrus touch to have this cool feature.
Also has lavender giving that clean air and semi liqueur, but Coriander touch is remarkable with an aspect spicy middle resin.
The heart is the focus, the rose takes over with its floral lemon look delicate but appears synthetic, something low quality and has a classic vibe, i think the discreet touch of geranium.
After hours appear woody nuances finalizing this perfume which is in the middle of the classic and modern, has quality by the price.

What does the original smell like? I have no idea, but it comes in a red box with a red cap. I LOVE the reformulation that came after that in a black box with small, central text and big shiny black III’s as the backdrop. But this review isn’t for either of these. No. This scent was reformulated AGAIN, and I approximate it to 2014-2015 when it happened. Be very aware that the cologne you have known has changed for the worse. You can identify the newest reformulation by the black box with a huge emphasis on the golden III’s.
I usually get annoyed at the moaning towards reformulations, but I found myself in the position for once. They truly did alter one of my favorite fragrances and transformed it into an expensive body spray. The first reformulation was incredible. It was a strong projector with woody notes intermingled with dark, spicy rose and booze. Be wary if you’re buying new boxes because the most obvious difference is the minimal projection. One inch from my arm after applying it almost brings nothing to my nostrils. I have to press my nose into wherever I sprayed it to even experience it. No one notices this on me like the previous Ungaro. The part that breaks my heart the most is the systematic removal of the rose and vodka. I smell NEITHER while they are almost all you can smell in the old version for the first 30 minutes.
Now does the new reformulation smell good? As a matter of fact, yes. It smells like opening an old, empty wooden desk drawer in a thrift store- pleasantly woody. However, the tradeoff of projection and the rose accords for an immediate dive into the base notes is not worth it. If you want the old version, I recommend buying a tester on ebay with the “III” being small and in the center of the bottle. The new version has rather big “III’s” on the bottle. Seriously, if you’re going to spend $20-$25, get the scent the majority of us fell for to begin with instead of whatever they’re trying to pass as Ungaro III today.
Because the reformulation is relatively new, many on here are still getting the older one when they buy it new, so they will rate it positively. However, pay attention to many of the newer reviews emphasizing a lack of projection. I might be the first person to even realize it was reformulated again.
    EDIT MAY 2015:
Out of sheer luck, I actually got the chance to experience the first formula of this from 1993 via a half-empty vintage bottle online. Might I say that it projects VERY well! Surprisingly, though, I prefer the first reformulation that I blabbed about in this review as the booze/rose notes are more pronounced. In a hilariously unexpected twist of events, the newest formula smells more like the one from 1993! However, it’s projection is horrendous. I ultimately resold my vintage bottle if only because the woodsy notes were uncharacteristically too prominent. But then again, it’s an old bottle that might’ve been above someone’s toilet in a cabinet for 22 years. Who knows what it’s supposed to smell like 😉

I purchased this online and it was 2 days ago that i recieved it , now lets get on with a little review :
first spray , its a blast of alcohol (vodka) then adds to the mix smell of lemon and coriander , i dont get the lavender nor saga and orange , 5 min later the top is gone which is good im not a fan any way , then in the middle i get a lot of rose and a bit (only a bit) geranium no lotv nor jasmin here again! , the good thing is the rose is so good and masculine and its light it wont get on your nerves , the dry down is the best part musky woody with ROSE (dominating)! so totally this frag is abut rose which is present through the whole notes that it makes this frag I(some how) one could say its almost linear but again smells good.as time of use it could be weared any time any day its almost all year arounder ! 🙂 but i would say fall and spring – night time – and not so formal places are the best preferences 😉 and one more good thing its cheap! almost 😀
