4160 Tuesdays is a perfume house I’ve been curious about for a while – if I ever get through my ridiculous backlog of untested samples, and I can start choosing what I want to test again, theirs is one of the first sample sets I imagine ordering.
So I was excited to receive a sample of this Gin Garden, even though it’s not what I would have picked for myself to start exploring this brand. First of all because it seems to be discontinued, but also because I could tell from the note list that this probably wouldn’t exactly be my thing. And I was right: having used up my little sample, I can’t say it’s made much of an impression on me.
I don’t think it’s bad, but it’s pretty weird, and not in a way that I particularly enjoy. The combination of the strong herbal-aromatic notes and almost equally strong sweet accord is interesting, but hard to get used to, and it seems rather unbalanced and even synthetic especially at first. All in all it has a homemade feel, like those indie oils that, at least to me, often smell a lot better in the bottle than they do on my skin. Incidentally, I don’t think it smells like gin or like a garden at all – more like an industrial kitchen where both savoury and sweet dishes are being prepared, and maybe they distill their own booze too.
I don’t know how much of this lukewarm first impression is due to my sample being old, and a dab vial too – not an ideal way to test a scent. But it doesn’t matter much: I’m actually glad I didn’t fall in love with a fragrance that’s probably impossible to find now, and if anything The Gin Garden’s sheer originality has made me even more interested in exploring 4160 Tuesdays.

I know the “The sexiest scent…” is very popular but I like this better. It has some zing. The mint, juniper berries and rosemary hit you between the eyes. This calms down and then there is a touch more sweetness. The orange and spices come to the fore. Oooh! now I am taken back to being a kid once more and sticking cloves in an orange to make a pomander. There’s rose swirling around in this wonderful crisp fruity heaven. This ones going in my top 5 from 4160 Tuesdays.
Maybe this unisex but I think it has enough sweetness for any woman to feel comfortable wearing it.
It perfect to wear on warm days. Fingers crossed we get some of those this summer.

This has, I think, a very similar base to The Sexiest Scent… and some of the others I have tried from this range, pleasant and distinctive of this house.
I am not a gin drinker, I’m not much of a drinker at all, so I don’t know whether this actually smells like gin – my partner says it does not smell *of* gin to him but does bring it to mind, so I guess it meets its objective.
I was intrigued by the concept, and the notes looked very interesting.
This felt at first like a fairly soft scent, I didn’t smell a lot to begin with, however when my partner came over and sat by me he commented right away on my perfume. I was impressed because he recognised right away it was new, he liked it, and he got the gin association without thinking I’d been on a bender!
In fact he liked it so much he immediately asked if he could sample it too – now that IS rare!
Now the strange thing is, I can smell this wonderfully clearly on him – it is somehow both warm and cool at once, light, yet its presence is known, there is a slight sharpness but in a soft way…I realise I am making little sense here! In fact I enjoyed it so much on him that I have it another go, and this time, I got the same result on my skin.
This seems to only really work on me when I am warm. I had it pegged as a cool weather perfume, but this is definitely one for warmer days (for me anyway).
Definitely unisex this would work well on anyone. I like that it has an aura yet is unobtrusive, it has a sharpness that cuts through yet it not bitter or sharp. Good longevity (about 8 hours) on both me and Himself and good yet soft projection.
This one is for sure worth sampling.
