Like many others I discovered Le Labo through my stay at a Fairmont Hotel. I showered and washed my hair with the divine scent of Rose 31 and today I finally have a bottle of my own through a trade.
It always takes me back to Bermuda, the place I discovered Rose 31. My skin eats perfume and this is one that is soft but very persistent, one of the reasons I can wear it in 3 out of 4 seasons (summer is the only month I can’t). A dry incensed rose with woods and a little olibanum. When iso e super is done well, I like it as it is in this composition: it complements the dry rose perfectly. The oud is light but detectable, and it is also of good quality.
I have other Le Labos I like better (Noir 29 and Vétiver 46). But this is an interesting take on a dry rose. Will always love this scent.

Pure genius. Perfect mixture of rose, cedar and vetiver. A great non offensive uni sex scent. Got my vote! Love it

Rose 31 reminds me of a tea I had at the Fairmont Hotel in Shanghai. Addictive, unforgettable spicy rose. The thing I like most about this perfume is that it is bold and subtle at the same time. Ideal on a cool crisp fall day.

    Rose 31.
Definately a spicy woody rose. Add some patchouli-vanilla to it and it eerily resembles POAL. If theres men deciding between this and POAL go with this one as its spicier and dryer.
Its all been said. A nice rose. Great for layering too.

Love this one. Like many others, I discovered it through the little lotion bottles provided by the Fairmont hotel. It is a dry and papery rose over a mid/base which blends elements of Chanel Sycomore (bright yet smoky vetiver) with L’Air du Desert Marocain (cumin/caraway and cedar). Those happen to be two of my absolute favorite fragrances. It’s a very interesting and unusual combination that actually works amazingly well in my opinion. Unisexy, but I think Rose 31 skews masculine.

When my husband and I decided to elope during a trip to the Bay Area last year, our biggest expense was a last minute reservation for a suite at the Claremont Club. I was psyched to discover that the hotel provided Le Labo toiletries to guests, and even more so when, on the day of our wedding, they sent up an extra set that was printed with our now shared surname.
Once I got past the novelty of having our own little bottles of customized Le Labo wedding toiletries, I stopped to actually appreciate the smell – amazing!! Rose 31 isn’t typical of the type of scent I’d have been drawn to at the time, but it instantly won me over.
What I love about Le Labo fragrances is how unapologetically animalistic they are. I’m super into pheromones (I spend way too much time sniffing my husband’s sweaty hair and skin), and Rose 31 is chock full of them. Taking something like rose, typically considered an icon of femininity, and making it dark, musky – almost dirty – is a brilliantly sexy idea in my opinion.
After I’d finished up all of my shampoo and lotion and body wash, I obviously had to have the perfume, too. Sneaky move, Le Labo. I only have a decant at the moment, but next time I feel like dropping a couple hundred bucks on a bottle, this is gonna be the one.
Plus, I get to relive my wedding weekend every time I smell it. 🙂

I was misled! This is not rose. Why does it keep appearing in lists of ‘the top 10 rose perfumes?’ This is for spice, vetiver and cedar lovers.
People who like POAL or Lyric Woman because of their woody and spicy notes might also like Rose 31. But I would never pitch this as a rose lover’s perfume, because if you like your roses juicy, deep, and rich, like Une Rose, there’s just not enough rose for that here.
I’d recommend Rose 31 to rose haters instead, show them they might not actually mind a hint. But I wouldn’t call it a gateway rose. That would be like calling the act of sitting in a room as your friend smokes a joint a gateway drug.

Like every other Le Labo fragrance I have tried so far, this is a very interesting creation, with the initial blast of somewhat offputting cumin seed (cumin seed, because somehow ground cumin smells different, more musty) developing into a warm, dry, lingering woody rose.
Hard to decide between like and love on this particular one (I do like rose a lot), so somewhere around 7.5/10 for me.
Would I buy it? No, because Gres’ Cabaret does a similar thing (if more ‘artificially’) at fraction of a price.

    Wow!
Le Labo (The Lab) is a niche unisex fragrance from Paris created in 2006. Le Labo classifies their fragrances first by the main note and then by the number of other notes in the fragrance. Thus Le Labo Rose 31 has Grasse rose as the main note combined with 31 other notes. Including cumin, clove, vetiver, oudh and musk. Some Le Labo stores will mix the EDT right in front of you and will also personalize the Le Labo label with your name on it. Too cool right?
Anyway, I received a sample of this in Nordstrom’s October gift with purchase package and I gave Le Labo 31 a try.. .
    WOW!
The top notes of Rose 31 are pure pleasure. The rose note is there but it is very subtle. There is also a luscious, spicy combination of scents that reminded me of a garam masala. The top notes lasted on me for about an hour. The heart note of rose then became more pronounced and creamy but still very light and pleasing. The base notes started forming on me after about three hours. That’s when things got very interesting…On me, the base notes of Le Labo Rose 31 were still pleasant but surprisingly “animalic” or “skanky” with the dry down lingering for 2 more hours. This one is definitely a unisex fragrance. I will certainly be looking to try more Le Labo fragrances. Kudos to perfumer Daphne Bugey for creating such a fresh and daring concoction.

Top 3 rose perfumes of all time in no particular order:
    Une Rose
    Aoud Roses Petals
    Rose 31
All 3 last beyond the 8 hr mark on me and I have a very acidic ph level where most perfumes either turn to urine or dissappear before I’ve put bottle down after spritzing.
Anyway, about Rose 31. I find it extremely mesmerizing!! When I want to feel as an unshaven boheme, wandering the streets in search of VINTAGE luxury bag, I wear Rose 31 alone. When I switch into Femme Fatale Mode I will layer with one of the other two. Or both.
My husband loves it and that in itself is a huge compliment to any perfume because he’s hard to please when it comes to perfumes..
I think this would smell equally fantastic on men!

You’re a rose, soaked in formaldehyde, preserved in a glass jar. Your jar is left in a dusty, abandoned workshop, and your only visitors are rodents, which seem to drop in whenever they feel the need to mark their territory. Your existence is timeless, sure, but also sour and deservedly forgotten. Rose 31 by Le Labo.

Rose 31 is a dirty, musky/hay, woody and spicy (cumin) fragrance at the opening. This is a very unique and sexy Rose smell. The Vetiver and Cedar play so well with musk scent in this that turn the rose, into a dirty, wild/barnyard rose. This can be a very sexual rose smell for a women. This smells like the heavenly odor of female private part covered with rose. This truly turns me on. If I would smell this on a girl, I would want to have sex with her. I would definitely say that this is more female oriented and I also have to add that the dry down becomes powdery and then you can smell the labdanum which makes it amber, animalic, sweet, woody, ambergris, dry musk, or leathery like.

So, my husband and I tried the Rose 32 bath products at the Fairmont in Bali a few years ago, and he kept commenting on how great it smelled, and how it was light, but noticeable.
At my last visit to the Le Labo store, I decided to surprise him with a full bottle of the fragrance. Bad mistake. He was very irritated about it, Ultimately, he said it smelled like “feminine deodorant spray” and refused to wear it. Said it smelled like dirty female private that someone tried to cover with rose spray. (Not sure where that reference came from, but we are also talking about the guy who thinks Santal 33 smells like body odor.)
Anyway, I reclaimed the bottle to use for myself. The opening on me is an oily, resinous Rose — not the lighthearted rose that you get in Diptyque Eau Rose, or even the old-fashioned drawer liner rose of Jo Malone Red Roses. This is followed by a painful pencil shaving note that is quite piercing for me, and then it finally settles into a musky, woody rose that does smell a little “dirty.”
Overall, I like but don’t love this. I wish I had gotten myself something instead!

*Me, entering a party wearing Rose 31*
A blind woman catches the scent.
“Gramma! You have risen from the grave! And you smell just like you did when you got gussied up for church every Sunday!”
    That’s what this smells like.

Maybe call it Vetiver 31 instead?
This fragrance is pretty linear, its composition smelling dry, grey-green, musky, and earthy, with the rootiness of vetiver and the tang of exotic spice lending it some dusky romance. Rose is there, and it reminds me of Van Cleef & Arpels Pour Homme’s rose note, very smooth and not sweet at all. But the vetiver and wood notes are more dominant, and there’s an impression of carrot or carrot seed accompanying them. Rose 31 is pleasant, well made, and unisex, the kind of fragrance you might reach for if you want a rose scent that doesn’t do the obvious, but if you’re a traditionalist with your roses, you might be unimpressed. My only real complaint: the concentration of perfume is a little too weak. For the price, it could be much stronger.

Another homerun from the house of Le Labo. Rose 31 is absolutely amazing with that earthy woody vibe. At first the rose note is prominent but that fades away in the dry down to a woody musk scent that leans more on the masculine side. Kind of reminds me of Le Labo noir 29…. longevity & projection is a beast & you deff get your $ worth here. LOVE IT!

Rose 33 might be the least linear perfume I’ve tried. I feel like I am smelling a totally different perfume at least every hour for a full day.
The opening is the smell of a crushed rose- more vegetal and wet than floral. After about an hour I get what smells like pure coriander which gets warmer and spicier until it’s more of a pink pepper.
Only after about 3 hours does the rose return, this time uncrushed- soft and slightly overblown. By bedtime I’m left with a soft, ambiguous glow.
I was not a fan of rose until trying this beauty. Even though this won’t be joining my collection, the quality and the poetry of this perfume is undeniable. Very well done.

This is so similar to Vetiver 46 because of the cumin. To me, this is the feminine version of Vetiver 46 because the rose gives this one more freshness and docility

  23. :

Upon initial spray the rose note comes off very bright and juicy. But that dries down very quickly after a few minutes and the sparkly rose note seems to disappear, on my skin it becomes musky with a faint rose scent. Somehow, the scent in the drydown reminds me of the smell of an eraser which isn’t a bad thing but that’s just how i feel. I’ve tested it a couple of times now and it’s a pretty unique and pleasant scent and all of Le Labo scents are fantastic in my opinion, it just depends on which scent resonates with you. So give it a try and hopefully it’s the one for you (:

I like the smell of Rose 31 but I don’t think it’s all that interesting or novel after having smelled hundreds of perfumes. It’s a bunch of synthetic woods and woody ambers with some spicy sweetness and a fresher rose note. Almost like Stella McCartney Stella or Nirvana Rose with a dash of sugar and spice. No real development once the top notes burn off, it just does a steady fade out.

  25. :

An Avante garde type of fragrance, the rose is somewhat there in the opening however on my skin all i smell is the caraway/cumin note as if I’m walking through an Indian spice market.

  26. :

    3 out of 5

An earthy, dirty, woody, masculine rose is how I would describe Rose 31. I only wish the dirtiness would last longer on my skin as I tend to like dirty animalic scents.
I do detect the rose from start to finish…..not sure how some people don’t get any rose (or very little) as the rose is prominent from start to finish for me.
I usually go with 3 sprays and the dirtyness from the caraway only last for about 30 min or so, then it turns almost creamy on my skin, not a soapy creaminess like Lyric man but more of like a thick creamy rose with woods in the background. The base still maintains the rose but more of a cedar rose combo.
I wish I got better longevity like I get with Santal 33 and Patchouli 24…I get around 5 to 6 hours, but it does seem to project nicely for the first 3 hours or so. Nicely done by Le Labo!

It IS a perfume, too?!))) I used so many of those body lotions, shampoos, conditioners (after a stay in a hotel, of course) and never thought it belonged to a whole separate line of fragrances.
Very very nice! Not a usual flowery sweet rose scent particularly, but something quite pleasant, sweet/spicy and with an edge to it.
I always thought it was too sophisticated and expensive-smelling for a body wash/shampoo/lotion hotel line.

  29. :

    3 out of 5

On first smell, I didn’t get the rose. A fragrant caraway carried on a soft cedar followed by a very general, airy musk. The second time around there is a very light blooming rose, an early spring bud, and more musk. Very very soft scent. I wish there was a bit more silage, though it is an incredibly fresh smell. I am searching for a smell with more cedar but I wouldn’t say no to this. It would make a fine gift for a spring flame.

I am surprised how much this has grown on me. I first tried the lotion and shampoo samples (a friend gave them to me after they stayed in a hotel). I then got the fragrance samples from Nordstrom.
After falling in love with it, I purchased the bottle at Nordstrom and watched them make it right in front of me. I have already received two compliments on it in 8 days! It could easily become my signature scent.
This is a deep and beautiful scent. I smell roses at first. But this is a different rose from the rose of New York Oud or others. It is rich and yet bright. After 15 minutes, the rose begins to fade and a dirtiness that had been apparent since the initial spray takes over. After an hour or so, that all mellows into a truly beautiful fragrance. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

  32. :

    5 out of 5

Charismatic and simplistic. A beautiful rose scent deep and rich. Honestly i don’t smell half of the notes listed.
I just get a deep realistic opulent red rose. Over the duration of the fragrance you may get an earthy, wood backbone to the ever so present rose smell. And at the dry down there is more of that woody musk seeping through. But the rose note is ever present and that is what you get.
Powerful longlasting opulent rose. Very beautiful indeed.

Oh my word. I love woody, animalic florals. And this one has my name all over it. Or maybe it will if I decide on a full bottle. I love that you can personalize Le Labo flacons.
Rose 31 smells like straight up rosewater to open, lucid and clear but richly floral. On warming on my skin caraway, cedar and guaiac become quite prominent. Le Labo’s site states cumin and it may very well be, but I get a nuance of caraway which tends toward spicy anise.
Cistus labdanum gives rise to a soft botanical ambery musk, and olibanum offers a delicate peppery incense to finish. Softly rosy, mostly woody with a warm, dry vapor. Massive love.

I’m posting a similar review for a few Le Labo fragrances. This is because I’m talking about the house as a whole. Sorry for some repeating.
Rose 31 is an interesting scent. I’ve bought quite a few sample vials as well as now my second bottle. What a lot of reviewers say about the reformulation is indeed correct. I wouldn’t quite call it a reformulation though. I live in the same city of a Le Labo shop, so I get to spend a decent amount of time chatting it up. Le Labo has only admitted to ever reformulating one fragrance. While they don’t technically reformulate, they use different essential oils. That explains the color variations and different smells. This is why Santal 33 sometimes smells well balanced and other times smells like pickle juice. Each “batch” has whatever essential oil is available to them at the time. The is the price to pay to have fresh quality ingredients over synthetics. I also had one employee hint that a fragrance will have a different vibe depending on which region it was made.
I do agree that Rose 31 has definitely taken a safer turn. I used to find this fragrance bordering offensive. Like another has said it now seems more like the bath products. I used to get an overwhelming pungent smell at initial spray that eventually had to dry down. I now get overwhelming rose with the “dirty” ingredients taking a back seat.
I recently took my bottle of Rose 31, Santal 33 and Bergamote 22 to the shop. When we compared, Santal 33 and Rose 31 were a lot different. Bergamote 22 was slightly different. The employee did mention that I need to let the fragrance settle and allow the oils to marry and over time it will settle. Perhaps this is a valid point.
I actually like that Le Labo uses the freshest oils and doesn’t go synthetic. I also like that each fragrance may be unique in ways that each bottle tells its own story. I also like that they somewhat admit to the differences.
If Le Labo fragrances were about 30% cheaper, I would own a lot more full bottles.

The rose is nowhere to be found on my skin, this smells entirely of caraway and vetiver. It does smell of cumin and body odor as others have mention and it tends to lean much more on the masculine side and is preferably worn in cooler weather

I have tried just one spray from a decant but it is definitely worthy of a compliment. I have my own concoction that is a very realistic “Sweet Rose” scent that I absolutely adore. Since stumbling across that lovely beast I thought I should shop around and try another rose scent, so why not something called Rose 31?
I am very pleased. So pleased that I will have to try other fragrances from the Le Labo Collection. I could see myself planning a vacation around a store visit.I have been shopping for one or two upscale fragrances and this will likely end up being one of my choices if the sillage and longevity is as good as many say.
You can tell immediately that this is a high quality fragrance that will last. I am not the type to stick with one signature scent, but more like an eccentric with a wide ranging taste. This is one that I could wear very often for dress up occasions. I find it to be more of a social after hours fragrance and maybe not so much a work scent (at least for a male) but I think that a woman could easily pull this off in a business setting.
It may be too early to say but after just a short while this one spray has nearly won me over and I am anxious to set aside one day to go full scale with the sprayer. I feel like I should wait for the right occasion but I will certainly enjoy this as long as it lasts on me and I would expect compliments. The scent is intoxicating but not overbearing. I will be nervous about possibly overspraying as the opening seems heavy but the dry down is incredible!
In short, this is a beautiful fragrance that exudes class but I do not read “snob” from this at all. I can picture this on anyone who is classy and down to earth. One spray on my forearm finds my nose without effort and my nose is pleased. I will still shop around and try a few others but this fragrance is very likely to fall into my top 3 for the luxury upscale category… Based on the ratings I would say this is worthy of a blind buy for a gambling man and quite suitable for the “classy” lady.

I just received my sample sizes of Rose 31 in the mail today! I am so thrilled! What a gorgeous fragrance. As soon as I opened the package I could already smell how lovely it was. My mom and aunt were with me and all three of us agreed that it is just simply stunning. We were gasping at how beautiful it smelled.
This is such a warm rose. It’s luscious and woodsy without being heavy. I usually dislike musky scents, but this is balanced so well with the rose that neither of them are competing for attention, but are instead coexisting blissfully.
I will say the longevity is very moderate on me….I sprayed it on my arm around 3 pm and it’s around 10 now and it’s hardly there. Just barely noticeable. But still! I don’t care! What a luxurious fragrance. I will wear this so much. I think I’ll be needing to buy a full size bottle soon…

Cloying and overdone to my nose. The EdP is better than the bath line, but overall, even the EdP is not something I want to wear or smell.

I never tried the actual juice of this perfume. All I’ve got is a complimentary gift set from a hotel stay 2 summers back consisting of body lotion, bar soap, shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner.
I don’t actually actively use them. I should, because these things do go bad. I tossed them inside a makeup and forgot about them. Now and then I do open it and take up the whiffs of fragrance: a warm, rosy, dry woody scent that smells romantic, sensual and grounded, and maybe a touch earthy. It doesn’t smell gendered I think the rose is realistic, it smells like a fresh, single fragrant tea rose. The oud in it makes it a little exotic and it’s a trendy note these days. Yeah I agree, for something that has ‘Rose’ in the name, it plays accessory rather than main attraction.
This is definitely a crowd pleaser kind of scent. It doesn’t smell common, or terribly complex but still gets your attention. What’s not so great is the hefty price tag. I guess it’s niche? $140 USD for a paltry 30 ml; really!? I’m Canadian, so that really hurts the wallet, especially when I factor in the current, dismal exchange rate.
On to the products: they each have a cute witty blurb and are all ‘made in Canada’. Hmm…
Soap: Haven’t used this yet. I will when I finish the body gel. Anyway I do prefer real body bars over detergent-like body gels. Looking over this one it appears to be a Castille soap made with natural oils of palm and coconut and has moisturizing conditioning agents of shea butter and glycerin. Parfum is listed as the fifth ingredient. I can honestly register the perfume only faintly. The beautiful base is drowned out with added citrus notes and a little more rose. Really, it just smells like a strangely sour rose, dry bar soap smell, and maybe a little spice. Disappointing. They should have just stuck to the rose. I wouldn’t buy this.
Shower gel: Yes, I do smell the juice in this, a little bit stronger than the bar soap. But still the smell isn’t strong. Contains moisturizers in it. As a shower gel, just don’t expect it to foam.
Shampoo: I only detect vague rose scent, and it smells sour and chemical all at once. There is a long list of nice additives to clean and condition the hair though: citric acid, amino acids, hydrolyzed wheat and soy proteins, aloe vera, vitamin B5, various plant oils and botanical extracts. Fancy! But $50 for their bottle of shampoo? No thank you. Even my brother’s Aveda perfume cost him $25 at most.
conditioner: a little more fragrant, but the gorgeous base still seems lacking. It smells flat. Contains more plant oils and botanical extracts.
[The good: My coarse, wiry thick hair felt clean and soft after though. The scent left behind is quite faint.]
Body Lotion: Out of the whole lot, this is definitely the the most fragrant. As a beauty item, it’s a light weight lotion that doesn’t break me out and leaves a pretty scent behind. Contains vit E, shea butter, soothing aloe vera & oats, oils of sweet almond, olive, apricot, safflower, and extracts of white tea and matricaria flower. What is matricaria flower? What purpose does it serve in the formula? I’ve no clue.
After using these products from head to toe, it does smell good. A softly scented aura. Personally I’d go for the lotion if a gift set isn’t available. The perfume itself just seems to pricey for a full bottle. If you are on a budget and love a certain scent, I recommend buying the perfumed lotion. It’s practically a 2 for 1 deal. Besides, the rest of this range’s personal care products are just too mildly scented to be worth it. For me, the dry exotic woods sets this perfume apart, and not being able to smell it is a deal breaker.
    That said,
Some beauty products really do have the nicest perfumes in them. Trouble is, there is no separation between the two, there is no option to buy it simply as a fragrance. For me, Clarins is a brand that keeps surprising me with their lovely, memorably scented skin care but it’s not a perfume house. Too bad.
At least Le Labo gives you that choice. This is my first experience with them, they kind of remind me of L’Occitane with their bath products and luxury positioning.
Nb. I decided I wanted a more rosy experience so I added a few drops of aromatherapy grade Egyptian geranium oil. It did the trick. The problem is I got a bit greedy added to much. The fresh minty-rose profile overwhelmed the original composition. Oh well.
I also previously rubbed the unadulterated scented lotion onto a large dried rose bud. Makes for some nice potpourri in my makeup bag. Rosy with a honeyed facet.
i probably should cozy up to my high end department store and beg for a sample of this eau and see if it really is worth the price.

This is one of those rare birds of a perfume that snuck up on me…When I first smelled it in 2012 I detested it. First off, I really hate rose. Second, I got a very strong male body odor and that BO smell you can get when you cook up certain breakfast sausage in the morning. So, 3 strikes.
Then, I was in Seattle in 2013 at a very, very nice hotel and there they were, strewn about–Rose 31 by Le Labo…soap, body lotion and shower gel. I smelled it again, and this time, it was ‘hummm….interesting’. I kept the soap and a body lotion….but still didn’t REALLY like it.
Then, the other day I came across the hotel size body lotion- long forgotten after I tossed it in an old gym bag. I put it on my hands…MAGIC. I didn’t like it, I LOVED IT.
So, sometimes the best music is something that I hated when I first heard it and now, the same goes for perfumes….kind of a mysterious, surprising and happy connection.
So, I bought Rose 31 in every way I could–shower gel, body lotion, perfume, massage oil/body oil and the perfume oil.
    Like I said, I love it….hearts, hearts, hearts…
I feel both sexy AND energized AND calm when I wear it–how can I feel calm and energized? I have no idea but I am in olfactory bliss.
If you don’t like this, give it another shot. I hope you find love with it too. I am not a jealous person.

Very masculine rose stained by vetiver with animalic nuance, has to be oversprayed to enhance sillage..a very good scent..since its price tag an heavier sillage was expected…..

A nice piece of luxury. You get rose water thats spiced up. Very ephemeral. I like the soap bar version even better. It’s less musky and more clean + spicy.

My girlfriend recently visited NYC and brought me a 5 sample box from Le Labo. Last Friday I opened the box and Rose 31 drew my attention, it was fun because just the day before I had been at one of my favourite shops in Madrid digging for some rose “suitable” for men (even though I agree everyone can wear any perfume as long as he or she feel comfortable with it). So I decided to try my first Labo fragance, Rose 31.
In my opinion it’s a very well crafted and high quality composition, I agree with the ones who think the rose is somehow muted here by caraway and vetiver, which is very interesting, specially for those who are looking for an introduction to rose fragances but are afraid of feeling it like a roselap in their faces.
Regarding longevity, I sprayed it at 7 p.m and I still could feel it on my skin at 10 a.m, sillage is soft for me but overall performance is very good I think.
Now I’m willing to try the other 4 samples in the box, I’ll let you know about them as soon as I do!

A sweaty rose. I love that Le Labo adds a hint of dirty sensuality to many of their scents. This and Oud 27 to me smell very much like naturally occurring human scent that is made pleasant. Very seductive.

I agree with ConsumerThis, I would call this 50% caraway, 20% cedar, and 30% rose. The rose, though nice, is muted by the spices. It’s a peppery rose, but not distinct enough for me personally.
I find myself reaching for Declaration D’Une Soir much more than this sample. If you are man and a bit afraid of rose, this may be a good start, but it doesn’t give the fresh, wet, bold rose of declaration.<br
