this perfume is really nice you can wear it in summer if you wish , i got the violet and the sandelwood , it is definitely unique in my opinion for girls who don’t like the typical cold fresh sent in the summer , you will stand out with this fragnance for sure , it doesn’t give me a headache and when it wears off it leaves this soft feminine touch on the skin . unlike rare gold which is the worst perfume i’ve purchased

Very straight forward, yet unique, mature, juicy and “wicked” plum fragrance. The scent suits perfectly with the purple bottle. It gives a vibe of a dark and mysterious potion. It can be a great choice for Halloween party 🙂 or clubbing. It lasts quite well for a decent amount of time. Sillage is also good (a little over moderate). I like it a lot.

I did not get an Alien vibe from this outside of a sort of grapey cool aid effect which is much sweeter and brighter here than in Alien.
I’ve noticed that the sandalwood used in a lot of Avon’s perfumes is very bold, almost masking whatever else is in there and makes some of their scents too samey to my nose (this one, Mesmerise Black, Far away infinity, Bella and Bella Sunset) It’s extremely pleasant, but I was hoping for a creamy/powder combo. No violet whatsoever here.
Very sweet, quite strong. A nice scent but nothing special unfortunately. I do love the bottle though.

The top notes are different, but once those settle down this smells quite similar to Mugler Alien – like Alien without the jasmine. Very nice, but longevity is only middling.

Really nice fragrance. I got the violet and the sandalwood and some warm purple fruity juiciness that must be the plum. I would say this is really wearable scent and doesn’t remind me of anything I’ve tried before. Classy for the price. Absolutely lovely bottle.

Fun fruity fragrance with a cute bottle – an enjoyable sharp tart plum opening, not getting much on the drydown. Doesn’t last at all, but, I guess you are getting what you’re paying for here. Still fun while it lasts.

    This is definitely PURPLE…
This is a fragrance in Avon’s Rare Collection – and I found this after I had been wearing Rare Pearls and Rare Gold for several years. Rare Pearls is a fabulous fragrance, so if you love Rare Amethyst – you will probably like Rare Pearls as well.
I love Rare Amethyst, from the minute that i sprayed this on my arm- it brought a smile to my face.
This is a lovely upbeat lighter fragrance. It goes on a bit strong, but within about 20 minutes starts to settle into the skin.
This is one of the fragrances that I keep in a tight rotation with Rare Pearls, which is one that I get a ton of compliments on.
    ———-
Avon really has something with these two fragrances. These are definitely in the same league as other more expensive department store brands of perfumes – but they are much more economical to purchase. Their bottles are elegant enough to showcase on the same shelf with your more expensive brand perfumes too.
These are fabulous! I can’t believe that I had never tried these – until recently.
Avon has come a long way – they are definitely a brand that is coming up in the world. I love their lipsticks and the Anew skin care line is definitely something that people should look into. They have created some GREAT Products for a fabulous price!

Rare Amethyst to me smells  like grape juice water or a watered-down wine. Unpleasant, and not nice to use as room freshener either.  I use fragrance as an extention of myself, more so than makeup or jewellery but this one, I don’t know if I should try mix it with something else to create a different fragrance, maybe.

This is how I like powdery scents to be. Rare Amethyst is sweet, but not too sweet, and the powdery dry down is not too harsh. A balanced grapes-violets-sandalwood perfection. Avon has done a wonderful job combining the fruity notes with sparkly violets, giving Rare Amethyst a happy vibe to it. It reminds me of a grapes-flavored candy that I used to like when I was a kid. The wrapping paper was exactly this purple. This could easily be my signature if it had better projection and longevity.

    * These are my personal experiences/thoughts with this fragrance. Yours/others may differ. *
    Initial – plum + alcohol
    Drydown – plum + violet
    Duration – 12+ hours
Projection – 1st two hours heavy, moderate afterwards
Experiences – A sweet, but powdery plum. Quickly becomes overbearing if applied too liberally. Better suited for cooler temperatures.
Quick Thoughts – purple, powdery, fruity, mature

I bought this because I love purple, but I was not dissapointed…somehow.I wanted to wear this perfume daily, but I can’t,because it has that”elegance”note in it.It smells really good, but I somehow feel that it’s not that persistent. After I sprayed the first time,I felt like the smell dissapeared instantly.I know that you’re not supposed to feel your perfume after some time, but not from the first time…

I really love Avon’s fragrance “Rare Pearls” and “Rare Gold” – so it was only natural that I would want to try other fragrances in this line.
Rare Amethyst is definitely a “Purple” fragrance – exactly like the bottle! (I’m certainly NOT the first to say this in a review… this seems to be a very “constant” thing that is mentioned in everyone’s review on this site).
This is a happy fragrance, something that lit my face up with a smile as I was sampling this with my Avon rep!
There are certain notes of plums and hints of grape that immediately identify a “purple” fragrance. Alien by TM, Tresor Midnight Rose by Lancome — has this type of scent. In a way… the original “Poison” by Christian Dior has a similar scent to this, but is much stronger. Spellbound by Estee Lauder is in this same range – so you may want to also try that, too… if you really LOVE this PURPLE FRAGRANCE THING!!!
I love this fragrance, but it is a bit more of a niche’ market than Rare Pearls is…
I feel that this goes on a bit stronger than Rare Pearls and is a little bit “louder” than Rare Pearls (the first hour that it is sprayed). The dry down on this is fairly quick. The first hour you are almost overwhelmed by it, then it starts to become less noticeable. This would be a great fragrance to wear when you are going to be in an open aired space, but I would think twice before wearing this in a crowd…unless you spray this a few hours before the event.
I personally love this – but I can see that it may be a bit strong (the first hour) for those that are more sensitive to strong fragrances. Rare Gold has this same effect on me. It starts off so strong that it is almost obnoxious… but then after the first couple of hours wear – it takes on a brothy blend of body chemistry that caramelizes the scent and becomes my own.
This is a great quality that I’ve noticed with the Rare Pearls fragrance as well. Perhaps this is why I have had so many compliments on it. Far more than any other fragrance!

Love this (cosy, sparkling plum), but unfortunately the staying power is very poor hence I may not repurchase.

  15. :

Rare Amethyst reminded me why I love plum! I agree with the member ptilda that it even smells purple, it does! And excuse me, but there are more notes than those listed!
A fruity grapey, strawberry-ish opening, not totally plum. And then plenty of violet accords, these two really pair well. The result is a mysterious, sensual smell. Some iris and a bit of white musk also develop, and right before the perfume totally settles there is neroli too. Now call me crazy for I smell all those things having not seen the notes listed.
Sweet in a good, polite, non suffocating way. Sweet as a lady should smell. Definitely not typical. The longevity on my skin is up to 5 hours; then it starts to fade fast. Sillage is close to the skin, but I’m fine with that.
    A yes from me!

I bought this because it’s purple. Yes, I’m that person.
But it was an outstanding, “lucky” blind buy. However, I really don’t think Avon is lucky. I think Avon is great, and since the largely pathetic 1990s, they have begun to offer some stunning beauties at a great price.
It is true that a lot of Avons have a “blast of alcohol” as mentioned in another review. But I find that a lot of fresh fragrances, particularly designer and celebrity scents, have that. But I don’t get it in this one, personally.
It’s also true that this smells “purple.”
Personally, I feel there should be a lot more to the notes listed. I’m getting other florals, not just the violet. And the sandalwood is there, but not overwhelming.
I first tried this in the winter and was really impressed with how crisp and lovely it was. Now I’m wearing it in Haiti on a rather warm February day (temps 80). It has lasted absolutely all day, including my hanging out with the resident goats (a favorite pastime of mine) and doing my share of “sweaty” work. Now in the evening it’s a close scent to my skin, but it absolutely luxurious!
This is not my favorite Avon scent, but it is an excellent one. The only reason it’s not a favorite is that fruity florals are not my favorite. But in the genre, it’s one of my faves for sure.

Very nice, a very sharp floral to my nose. The rares all seem to have something in common, a sort of formality to the scent. My favourite so far is rare pearls.

I ordered to my Avon lady one, based on the reviews it should smell really nice and beautiful Irina Shayk is georgeous as the image of Rare Amethyst .

This is simply A BEAUTIFUL MASTERPIECE! The best plum note I have ever sniffed with a powdery violet backdrop. Simple and classy. And the price is right! I think that Avon has many wonderful scents that are very under-appreciated!

I bought the 1ml testers on Ebay, which I’m glad about because this just doesn’t work on me. I get a burst of purple fruit, then a lot of floral. Then it dries down to powdery. I might try layering it.

I get the whole ‘smells like purple” thing now that I got this. To be more specific what I smell when I apply it is something like grape juice/grape jelly. It is fun!

This does smell purple, smells just like the notes and the bottle look. I like it a lot. Lot’s of juicy plums and sandalwood. Very long lasting on the skin but not much sillage. The bottle is just precious!I love the ombre effect. I hope they keep this one around because when I’m finished this bottle I wouldn’t mind a repurchase.

smells just like drew barrymore sultry and paris hilton tease! slighty sweeter but they are all sisters! Mmm, night scent.

I am absolutely in love with this perfume! I bought a bottle 2 weeks ago and immediatly ordered two more as soon as i smelled it. I hope avon does not discontinue this one. As soon as i sprayed it on my mom said you smell like TM alien! I knew i recognized something familiar about rare amethyst and as soon as she said that i realized that was it. Of course rare amethyst isn’t as deep or complex as alien but they have similar dna. This is one of my favorite scents. It also reminds me of jimmy choo flash, i layered jimmy choo flash lotion with rare amethyst and oh my goodness it was yummy! When i wear rare amethyst my husband cuddles up next to me and constantly tells me how sexy i smell. This was a definate hit for avon. After two hours i can’t smell it on myself much but others can. Longevity is about 3 hours on me and sillage an arms length. For me this is a good find expecially when some of my designer and niche perfumes don’t hold up as good.

Smells really good. Like others have pointed out the scent matches up with the purple coloring of the bottle and the liquid. This is a juicy delicious plum scent with a floral touch of violet. It’s all I get because I don’t pick up on sandalwood or any wood. It’s a bit on the powdery side once it goes into the floral note. It’s not too strong but not a body mist either. In fact it’s just about the perfect balance between fruity and floral for me. Elegant. It smells more expensive than the low price it has. I like to spritz this on at night. It smells better at night and on spring and summer afternoons in air conditioned buildings. This is also appropriate for work/office environment but also flexible for going out on dates and dining in restaurants. Gorgeous.

Smells so purple, Grimace should be the spokes model! Intensely plum and violet scented, this isn’t my favorite, but it’s pleasant with a dusty dose of sandalwood. They sure went literal with the composition of an amethyst fragrance!

    I’m in shock.
I have about 5 avon fragrances in my big fragrance collection, however, I’ve probably smelled at least 30 or more of them. And this one….wow. This one is one of the absolute best I’ve ever smelled.
For one…This fragrance smells WAYYYYY more expensive than it is. I ordered a bottle for $10 or $11 and when I received it…I immediately ordered another. Please note…that’s the absolute 1st time I’ve EVER done that with an Avon fragrance.
This fragrance (to me) does NOT smell powdery at all. I smell fruity and sweet but, in a rare form, I smell fruity and sweet together in a grown up type of way. Normally…fruity/sweet fragrances usually smell like they’re for 14 year olds. But this one smells like it’s for a woman anywhere between 20 & 40.
I absolutely love it. One of the best fragrances Avon has ever produced, EVER!
    Overall Scent – 9/10
    Projection – 7/10
    Longevity – 8/10 (6 hours with only 4-5 sprays)
    Overall Rating – 8/10
Amazing Job Avon! I’m shocked and very pleasantly surprised.

I love this, smells like sunshine to me (I know, it sounds weird). When I use this one, it makes me smile, although I’m usually depressed as fck.

So great they finally introduced this in Poland! It’s a perfectly PURPLE perfume, not just because of the bottle but of the scent as well! The definition of PURPLE I’d say;) It smells like perfect black fruit sorbet – blackberries, blackcurrant and chokeberry. At the moment I’m smelling this on my one hand and Outspoken by Fergie on the other – and they’re sooooooooo similar!!!! Only Fergie has more sour fruity notes (carambola maybe) plus orange blossom and leather. Rare Amethyst has no leather or orange blossom and it’s not as sour, but otherwise it’s really similar. The woody note in Amethyste is very delicate and emerges shyly after a few minutes but you have to know it’s there – or else you may not even notice it. Violet? Maybe… Plum? None of the plums I’ve ever eaten smelled like this… And I have eaten plenty:D But there is so much more in it than these 3 notes they’ve listed!
Once I get tired of my fall/winter powdery/woody/vanilla beauties, I’ll jump to my closet and get Rare Amethyst out of it and it will be a great change, but a change suitable for the season, weather and everlasting nights:)

Rare Amethyst is my second favorite perfume from Avon (Imari Elixir is the first). A very feminine perfume with a gorgeous bottle from the Rare collection (Gold, Pearl, Amethyst, Rubies, Sapphire). The smell of Plum, Violet, and Sandalwood are well combined in Rare Amethyst and it comes out wonderfully mixed.

    A lucky blind buy!

  33. :

    3 out of 5

This was basically a blind buy, after I sniffed the “rub wrist here” corner of the Avon catalog.
This scent is lovely! It goes on gently, with the plum and woods being most prominent, but then the floral kicks in with a gentle sweetness. The notes compliment each other very nicely, and create a great fresh scent for day or nighttime use.

  34. :

    4 out of 5

Rare Amethyst smells mostly like plums to me. There is specifically a strong boozy plum note, very sweet and heavy. This smells very different than what I was expecting. I was hoping for a powdery sandalwood, suitable for daily use, but this seems more of an evening scent, and I was not expecting the booziness at all. I find it rather strong and although I think I can no longer smell it on myself after 5 hours, I still get wafts of it now and then that smell just as strong as when first applied.

  35. :

Love love this. The first day I wore it, I received compliments. Lovely scent. Typically I do not like fruity scents. But I do pull this one out at times. It reminds me of Euphoria or BBW’s Dark Kiss. Today I am layering it with an Arabian – King of Sandal because Rare Amethyst is basically plums, violets, and sandalwood. I can smell this a little on me and I think it’s a nice combination.
I think this scent is really perfect for any occassion. Non offensive. Good for office and special events. People at work always mention how pretty this smells. In fact, someone stopped me in a store the other day to ask the name.
Not that it matters but the bottle is beautiful, too.
Everyone seems to mention that it smells purple. Not sure what purple smells like but I agree – it smells a bit purple.
Update: apparently, I love the smell of plums. I’m not a sweet, fruity person but I do like this smell. I think it is non offensive for the office.

I really like this, I just tried the little sample paper, and to me this is very similar to Eternal magic enchanted from Avon. I have and love eternal magic enchanted, but it was discontinued. I will probably buy a bottle of this since they are so similar.

  37. :

    3 out of 5

I got a sample of this with an Avon order and I am not that impressed. To me this smells almost exactly like the way Rare Pearls did when I tried it. I am not sure if Rare Pearls has plum as a note, but will look it up. Very “heavy” smelling, just from one little dab of the test swab. I would be wary of spritzing this one directly onto your wrists if you don’t want to be a sillage bomb.
Not working with my chemistry at all, but at least it didn’t cause an asthma attack as the Rare Pearls did. Maybe this would be good for nights out, if you like “plummy” scents. Definitely not subtle enough to wear to work if you have to watch what you wear due to clients/ co-workers.

  38. :

    4 out of 5

I found this to be a very plummy sandalwood, lasting about 3 hours for me. It’s very pleasant, sweet and comforting. What surprised me is that it’s not like the other “Rare’s” so to speak from the series. This Rare seems to be much more straightforward in its presentation while all of the others took you on a trip through a myriad of notes and their longevity was very good. I do wish that Avon had also kept the same type of bottle as the others in the series, instead of creating a new flacon. Putting them together looks odd and makes Rare Amethyst the odd one out. This perfume can be worn any season, tho, which does make it cost-effective. But it’s just not up to the specialties the older Avon Rare perfumes had. This Rare seems to apply to today’s times of linear, sweet, fruity compositions that sit on top of a woody base, and that’s not rare at all. It just doesn’t make waves at all and follows the trends of popular sweet fruitiness. I can’t even say a fruity concoction, because there aren’t enough notes discernible to the nose. It’s a well-blended perfume tho, unobtrusive and office-friendly. There’s a bit of a sparkle in the initial spritz, which is uplifting. This season-less potion definitely is more innocent than others and can be worn by any age group. It’s sweet tho, be careful in spraying.

This didn’t work for me, but it’s a beautiful bottle. Now I have 2 of them to give away as gifts, I suppose. 😉

  40. :

    3 out of 5

I really enjoy this one….the bottle is pretty (gorgeous, actually)…I love the direction they are taking this line with the new branding.
Opening spritz is a rich sweet-tart candy like plum—not a tooth-achingly sweet, but an effervescent sweetness. I get a bare hint of powdery violet in the middle notes, but the plum and sandalwood are the stars of this show. The sandalwood is tempered though by the powdery violet and the sweet plum to give it a nice rounded almost creamy scent. It is never sharp or harsh. On me, it lasted about 5 full hours before I needed respritzing, but Avon has made this particular “Rare” line so very affordable that it’s not a hardship to respritz.
    I wholeheartedly recommend!

ordered it on ebay for $8 cant wait for it to come!
I got it and now I am a little upset cause it smells just like Juicy couture couture couture (which I own) so now I have two bottles that smell exactly the same one me. Well I guess for $8 I am happy. It smells really good and lasts a lot longer than most Avon perfumes do.
Agoenk it is not unisex at all its very feminine ( at least to me) just to let you know 🙂
