Description

Oriental woody perfume Pi by the house of Givenchy is excellent for eternal explorers and fans of sensual experiments. Its geometric bottle with perfectly clear lines contains a woody, sensual scent. Basil, rosemary, tarragon and neroli introduce freshness into this generally warm, oriental composition with an accentuated strong note of Guaiac wood standing in union with balmy notes of vanilla, tonka and benzoin resin. The perfume was created by Alberto Morillas in1998.

There are several successors of this edition. Their bottles were designed similarly, with an exception of modern and futuristic Pi Neo perfume from 2008. The bottle for Pi was created by Serge Mansau.

The successors of perfume Pi from 1998 are the following: Pi Fraiche 2001, Pi Metallic Collector 2004, Pi Original Code 2006, Pi Leather Jacket 2006 and Pi Neo from 2008.

Their composition opens with aromas of basil, rosemary, tarragon and mandarin. A heart encompasses neroli, geranium, lily of the valley and anise, while base notes include: vanilla, tonka, cedar, benzoin, almond and yellow sugar.

I get alot of vanilla, but it is a rich boozy vanilla with a hint of almond. The projection on my skin is about average with decent longevity, i must still have the old formulation bottle, speaking of the bottle, it is one of the best designs i have seen in a long while.

Have to say it’s one of the most beautiful bottles I’ve ever seen! The smell is nice, very pleasant and warm a bit boozy. but it does kind of remind me of those dog products, like a dog toy or dog shampoo, those vanilla/oatmeal scented ones.. yes lol and I’m trying to get that out of my mind!

Soft and pleasant scent but it didn’t impress me. It reminds me a bit of Jaipur Homme. I expected more prominent vanilla note. It was intresting for me will Pi be able to beat Le male-no Le male is better.

Liked the opening, loved the wonderful dry-down of vanilla and almond. Somehow, it invokes an image of warmth, cozy or intimate embrace on a cold night. Heavenly.

Sweet vanilla opening that has a slightly feminine vibe, but then dries down to a warm, citrusy, almond-ish vibe that developes into a more masculine, inviting scent. The fragrance is actually kind of complex. I get compliments from the ladies EVERYTIME I wear it. This one may not be for the man who is insecure, but for those who ARE secure…make space in your Rolodex.
BEWARE: PRINCE wore this…ladies love it…enough said.

On my skin, the almond quickly dissipates to reveal the slightly bitter tonka surrounded by a mist of vanilla with a bit of benzoin coming through. Others have remarked that it is very strong, which means that I could be anosmic to parts of it. To me, on a man, it smells more woody and incense-like, which is what I would’ve liked on myself. It smells sexy, classic and sweet, but it has nothing to do with the syrups we find in modern times. Alberto Morillas put some work in Pi and even if it’s been reformulated-mine comes from after 2013-it’s still very worth it. Mine cost around $90CAD from perfumes shops and honestly, I’d buy a backup if the price were right.
ETA sept2018: I had to assist to a conference with some old man bathing in this stuff. He pretty much turned me off of this beauty for at least a few months. Now I know what people mean when they say it’s strong. Do not go over two sprays and wear it under clothes!

I love this scent so much! I just want to bathe in it haha. I wish it was a little more woodsy, but it’s still amazing. I would consider this a unisex fragrance.

Smells basically of vanilla, almonds and benzoin. It’s alright, but not a huge fan. Longevity and projection are both excellent. I give this a ‘strong like’.

ummm its just kind sweet, kinda deep, kinda good, but kinda old lady smelling. There are much better options in this category. Had a vintage bottle for years and wore it maybe 5 times and always regretted it lol

I own more than a couple of perfumes by Givenchy. It is quite clear for me that the one I like the best is Gentleman (old version). Pi is a type of perfume that is a bit overly sweet for me. On the other hand it’s clearly one of my perfums that attracts a load of compliments.
There are some characteristics that are common to the different products of this brand:
    – Many of its perfumes are top sellers.
    – Usually their quality is above average.
    – Givenchy fragrances is often compared with Gucci’s. (I wonder why?)
PI’s quality is above average. The flask is very nice – my opinion – although some people consider it tacky. The juice has a quite beautiful amber colour. The sprayer is very good and the protection ring is handy. I haven’t any complaints in what regards its presentation. I just don’t have a definite opinion on the juice itself.
The nose behind it is Alberto Morillas. I have a an opinion about him and his creations. Mr. Morillas is one the leading perfumists in this industry. His fragrances are very pleasant, his scents tend to have a fresh opening, the drydowns are very good and the performance is usualy bellow average.
With PI I get less freshness than it’s usual with Morillas creations and globally this fragrance is way sweeter than his usual sweetness. The performance is above average and the drydown gives you a long experience of sugar + almond + vanilla + tonka + benzoin, giving this cologne one of the sweetest drydowns in my shelf if not the sweetest. But it’s a feminine sweetness totally different from Gaultier Ultra Male or Zara Gourmand Leather more manly sweetnesses. It’s not comparable as well with Rochas Man cappuccino gourmand strong note..
In my opinion this fragrance is a unisex one, but leaning to the feminine side, and I would like it to have a more manly projection with birch in the second stage and bottom notes with either a stronger cedar or sandalwood or even guayac wood. But I am not a perfumist and probably the fragrance would be tottaly unbalanced with my suggestion. I don’t have any doubts that Mr. Morillas knows better.
So why did I buy it? I could not resist to the buying impulse after hearing half a dozain ladies comments in the space of five minutes at Sephora. The comments were preety explicit on how this EDT is pleasant, sexy, manly, irresistable, alluring and with no match.
Later at home I could confirm it with my wife and daughter. They just called it extraordinary and my daughter even asked me if she could use it.
    That’s good enough for me.
Let’s confirm my right math for PI:
    Scent opening: 8.0 (my judgement)
Scent dry down: 8.0 (my judgement)
    Longevity: 8.5 (10+ hours)
Sillage: 8.0 (6 feet at its peak. It projects for 2~3 hours.)
Uniqueness: 9.0 (I feel that it’s not unique but I am not aware of any fragrance similar to PI)
Usability: 7.5 ( If you use it in the summer you will be arrested for bad citizenship. Use it in cold or mild to cold weather, either day or night.)
Versatility: 8.0 (If you feel confortable with a sweet oriental woody fragrance you may well use it almost everywhere provided that you don’t overspray. It is an excelent fragrance for clubbing as well a ladies compliments getter. Exceptions: formal events + beach + workout + activities where you may sweat).
    Quality: 9.5 (great)
Presentation: 9.5 (looks really good in any shelf. Some people judge it tacky but I don’t)
Price: 7.0 (37 Euros plus taxes and shipping; not bad for a Givenchy top seller)
    Average Rating: 8.30/10,0
Will I buy it again? Probably not!
I only recomend this EDT to people who really like sweet oriental fragrances.

Obviously this was not one of my Discount buys, although we did get a good deal on my Husbands 100ml bottle at a perfumer at an outlet mall. The bottle design is unique and lovely, not many perfumes come in an angled bottle. Its still comfortable when you spray it.
The scent is very warm and inviting. Sweet but with a powdery edge. The top only lasts 3-5 minuets but you get a bit of green and citrus. The mid gives the powder, at its base it is almond vanilla sweetness. My Husband is well suited to a warm fragrance and it smells wonderful on him. Obviously this is not an everyday cologne but something he wears to more special occasions or date nights. From the Feminine perspective this is absolutely divine. Gentleman if you wear this you are giving your Lady a treat.

I discovered this in a magazine at school when I was 13 years old back in 2001. So glad to grew into it years later when I got it for Christmas when I was 22. This reminds me of Brut and baby powder with a sweet twist. Something that both James Bond and my dad would wear. So I feel badass and sophisticated when I wear it, just like I always wanted to be when I was 13.

I find it funny how people say this has been ruined or reformulated.
I tried the current version and it’s EXACTLY the same as my first bottle from 1999.
Lasted all day and is just fantastic.

Wow! Was lucky enough to receive a vintage bottle of this amazing fragrance from one of Eyviab’s giveaways and will start by saying you really don’t want to over do it with this one.
First wearing I did 4 sprays and was almost too much because for the first couple hours this is a Vanilla/Almond BOMB! But in a very good way as it just kind of wraps around you like a blanketing cloud of deliciousness…
It projects really nice for those first couple hours and as far as longevity I put this on right after dinner and could still faintly smell it on my skin the next morning 12 hours later!

I remember this being an incredible comfort scent. it oozes love, compassion and tenderness. Masculine, very sexy too…It reminds me sweet caramel popcorn but more almond/peanut sales stands, oozing sweet caramel aroma, warmth, gourmet, as in edible. Major notes, vanilla, almond, benzoin, woods. Very sexy, can be used by some women, and perfect for yielding, loving men…
A great vanilla scent among all fragrances…

Pí is soft, sweet, delicious unisex scent. You can smell synthetic vanilla and almond, doesn’t feel too much I think, fresh and dense in a perfect way. I can compare with YSL Body Kouros, Pí is sweeter and more almond, but they have the same vibe. The current Pí version has low projection and 5-6 hours lasting. I like the smell but shame of the projection

  25. :

I think the scent has changed just a slight bit since the ones in the store around 5 years ago. The ones then seemed to have this pillowy fluffy transparent airy marshmallow freshness with a strong hint of woody note. My current bottle seems to have less of that and more of the amaretto almond liquer aspect. The only variable factor is that the earlier bottle which I am referencing , I would only have sprayed on my clothes/ different materials, not on my skin. Nowadays I am spraying on my skin. Although I’m fairly sure that spraying on skin would only facilitate the development of this airy-fresh-woody-fluff accord, if anything. Which is why I get the feeling something has been altered since approx 5-10 years ago

    3 out of 5

I’m going to try to be objective here, but full disclosure: this scent was ruined for me by a co-worker who used to go on regular smoke breaks and spray this juice on afterwards to cover up the odor. This fragrance is a nuclear vanilla bomb with sixty miles of projection, and should only be applied in small amounts, once per day. The co-worker used it like air freshener three or four times in an eight-hour period.
So I don’t like this scent anymore.
But if I take a few steps back from the noxious memory, try to take a fresh look at this juice, I might be persuaded to call this a five- or six-star fragrance instead of a two- or three-star fragrance.
BTW, did I mention the vanilla? Did I mention that it’s nuclear? That’s what happens when you take vanilla and add benzoin, tonka bean, almond, and anise. Pi is sweetness, layered with sweetness, further mixed with sweetness, and planted in a bed of sweetness.
“Cloying” is something of an understatement.
True, there are some “green things” (basil, rosemary, tarragon, etc.) thrown in there to give it a more herbal character, but those notes get lost in the Vanillapocalypse.
Did I mention how sweet this scent is?
Still, it’s an intriguing concoction, and at the time of its release it was a very bold and daring move by Givenchy, and I respect that. Again, if applied in small doses, it might be the sort of thing you could enjoy once in a while as a novelty. But seriously: small doses, in cold weather seasons.

“Chameleon which changes scents instead of colors”
The most interesting frag I’ve ever tried. Begins with strong masculine note that smell as the skin after cold shower. Transforms into mix of leather, vanilla and almonds while opening notes still linger in the background at a time. Transformations never stop, it brings new notes all the time, just amazing.

  28. :

Back in the early 2000s i always “ended up” with Pi though i never bought it. I had a huge bottle. I actually enjoy the reformulation better because it is lighter than original. The original was just too strong like one spray was enough. its a beautiful sweet Parisian WINTER time only scent. nice scent sweet like milky warm almonds & plasticky vanilla. BEAUTIFUL

  29. :

    3 out of 5

First off, I’m female. I don’t mind the odd man fragrance in my collection. I love and wear Opium pour Homme, for example. So I was hoping Pi would work for me. I like a fresh vanilla. There’s just one note in here that doesn’t sit well with me. I think it could be the tarragon, which I smell quite clearly here – my brain is telling me it belongs on a chicken with a nice cream sauce and not on me. It does eventually settle down to a nice vanilla, but that generally takes a couple of hours, which I don’t feel like waiting through if I’m not really enjoying something. And I can still smell hints of tarragon even then, enough to spoil the vanilla for me. But I do think the herby notes would work much better on a man. Hubby likes it, so he can have it and I’m sure I’ll enjoy smelling it on him more. Actually there’s also a soapy note in there that I’m not a big fan of either.
However – having tried it again several months later, the tarragon and soap aren’t bothering me much today and I’m liking it enough to have just bought a vintage bottle to see what the fuss is about there. And after reading in the forums that this is similar to Madonna’s Truth or Dare Naked, of which I have a decant that I thought smelt nice but a bit cheap – I’ve got one on each arm right now and there is actually a lot of overlap, they’re really very similar. ToDN has a bit more going on note-wise BUT it does have a cheap quality, so I think Pi wins still as it smells like you spent more on it, which you did. It’s smoother, creamier. Ok yes maybe I like it. And it’s very similar to Jean Paul Gaultier 2, which I love, once you get past the openings of both.

This could be very magical on certain gents. It’s warm, passionate and dazzling. Could be used to dress up or casually wear. Very pleasing..

  31. :

    3 out of 5

For whatever reason this smells “dirty” to me at first spray– dirty as in unclean, not dirt-like. I am guessing that maybe the green notes together with the benzoin gives Pi a very pungent, almost animalic scent because I was so certain that the heavy, BO-like smell came from some sort of animal note. Then the overpowering, stickily sweet vanilla hits me over the head and I could not wait to scrub it off my skin. I have never reacted so negatively to a fragrance in my entire life ha ha.

This is lovely. Citrus and vanilla and herbs and tonka and wood and almond. All well done and comforting. The women in my life have found it to be sexy and attractive. I like it myself. I had thought the longevity was weak, but I can spray two extra spritzes for longevity and it would be difficult to overspray. Pi also smells great on clothing (Not everything does). Eight hours on skin and one spray will reactivate it for a few extra hours of sillage.
My bottle smells much better today than it did two years ago when I bought it.
The bottle is also quite beautiful and interesting. A real winner.

  35. :

Pi is something unique although vanilla, one of the most popular notes is the headliner in this composition. The vanilla is however very well blended with spices and some citruses on top. There is also a floral quality that gives the scent some radiance and a deep character.
Perfect for close encounters as the performance is medium at best.
    Opening: spicy, aromatic
    Dry-down: powdery, balsamic
    Feeling: sensual, alluring.
    Amazing bottle.

One of the firsts fragrances that I wore/buy… for me this is a masterpiece BUT I know it does not like to everybody because the vanilla scent is very heavy on this aroma but I dont care, I still use it because I love it. This is a very good option for cold afternoons/nites. It has been reformulated and the new version is a little less powerfull. 9/10

  37. :

I first tried this perfume in 1998, just a few months after its release. I still remember the astronaut campaign and the sticker samples that filled every men’s magazine. Pi was an amazing perfume, a vanilla bomb with lots of plastic/synthetic vibe – in an awesome way – that reminded me the way that my sister’s dolls used to smell. I instantly fell in love with it, I bought a full bottle and I enjoyed its huge longevity and silage. Just one spray would last 12 hours and more.
I got really sad some days ago when I tested this masterpiece again: the juice has gone a major reformulation, it is actually quite a new perfume, with little resemblance to the old one. Quite weak, lots of alcohol, not much of its synthetic/vanilla vibe, it was just like a copy.
This is still a love from me, a really nice scent by Givenchy!
*This review was written after several full wearings of the perfume and not just after smelling this on paper or on wrist.

I love the almond note, very well executed. reminds me of being indoors with the family on a cold winter evening. It’s surprisingly uplifting and has enough spices and maybe a tiny bit of citrus to make it bright and not boring or cloying. I will try my best to find the old formulation otherwise the new one is still extremely good.

@benpitt I have bottle with small Pi logo but has 19 ingredients and 4 are colours, so?
Also has no Givenchy writing on sprayer.
Also on the box front above Givenchy it has no square logo, like 4 little squares. It has it on the top lid.
My batch code is 5D01. Which is 2015 on checkfresh. Maybe code is repeated?.
Cant work out if its old or new.
    Quote from benpitt:

one of the best designer vanilla based scents ever? Yes imo, so far to say even one the best designer frags ever! A true classic frag for vanilla lovers, not as strong as it used to be, but still strong enough to be enjoyed still today

  46. :

    4 out of 5

This fragrance is truly sensual and exquisite. Even if it’s from 1998, it’s still just as contemporary and relevant today.
For a long time I stayed away from it because I heard of the disastruous reformulation rumours, and also because it is my uncle’s signature fragrance, so I was afraid it’s not gonna suit me. I decided however to take the step and order this beautifully shaped bottle, and now I can say it was a great decision.
The strong, sweet combination of vanilla, benzoin and almond, is there from the beginning, surrounded by hints of spices and green notes. It quickly turns powderry and stays close to the skin, creating a soft and cosy cloud. I think Pi has the quality of making its wearer exude trustworthiness and comfort.
In other words, I found that it compliments my personality and envelops me in a unique way.
Performance wise, do not expect wonders. It lasts about 4-5 hours on skin, with relatively low projection; on clothes though, it stays longer and you might actually come home after 8-10 hours of work, and still feel the amazing clound around you.

Firstly, the bottle is one of the best looking bottles iv’e ever laid eyes on. I love the Egyptian style going on! The scent character is pretty inoffensive and quite edible. Nothing bad here really! Got about average performance from my sample.

I had given this to my boyfriend for Christmas a couple years back but he very rarely used it as it was too powdery for his taste, so I use it myself every now and then instead 🙂
To me this scent is a comforting vanilla powder with just a little bit of woods. It’s definitely a unisex scent in my opinion. It reminds me of hunkering down in the warm cozy blankets during a snow storm or something to that effect

Applied a couple drops of my sample and let notes take shape. Recognizing the scent, this is what I smelled on a male car rental agent who booked me in once long ago. Pretty sure this was it. Wasn’t so good I asked what it was, but a deep scent on first encounter. To me this scent gives off an old industrial/gangster vibe. Possibly something that would fit a funeral home worker…or dracula.
    Update
On a 2nd wearing, i get the same notes. Minus the dracula..its not That dark lol. Interestingly, on the opening this now feels like original Joop Homme and Joop Homme Nightflight. Must be the almond note.

I purchased a sample of this for my son, and I ended up using it for myself. It’s a very comforting aroma. The almond gives a beautiful kick, and the spices smell wonderfully warm.
The type women who would love wearing this are those who like stronger fragrances such as Shalimar, Youth Dew, Tabu, Five O’clock Gingembre, etc.

I’m not sure why some say this is unisex. My opinion is this is too heavy for a woman. I absolutely love Pi and have been wearing it for many years. Dress nice while wearing her because she’s not for jeans and a t-shirt. It’s a nice vanilla, almond, powder scent that lasts quite a while. Super sexy.

  52. :

Totally unisex. I was visiting a friend and she had me try it out. This belonged to her husband but her and I both like these types of scents so she assumed I would like it. I gave it a couple of sprays to the wrist and was okay with it, not immediately impressed. I felt it was surprisingly powdery for a men’s fragrance…. But wait! You have to give it about a full 30 minutes. It changed completely and it is fantastic!

    Givenchy pi 🙂
    Created by Alberto Morillas
This man made some of my favorite fragrances so far.
This is a very soft, honey, almond and vanilla sweet little angel.
Frankly i find it so sexy.
Some say it’s more feminine than masculine but i say it’s quite UNISEX.
    It starts with with basil and a kind of orange which is a normal opening.the mid.here begins the story..i feel almond;
a very nice almond that is not fizzy, neither synthetic.in combination with vanilla creating a sweet and bitter taste..there also a feel of soft floral scent caused by neroli..in the base there is tonka bean;and benzoin that makes the whole perfume a little (a little) artificial but over all it is sweet, nurturing, sexy and beautiful. Unfortunately the longevity is so weak on me and projection is close to skin.
    Over all 7/10

  54. :

    4 out of 5

Givenchy Pi is another fragrance that made me eat my words–I did not like it before, but now I think it smells exquisite. Alberto Morillas is a master!
Yesterday, I was lucky enough to try a 2000 version of this rich aroma, which I bought a 50 ml. bottle of. Just after spraying, Givenchy Pi smells like a very sugary lemonade with sweet herbs (on account of rosemary, basil, and tarragon). Later on, the herbs fade gradually, giving way to an exquisite cocktail of almonds, mandarin and vanilla with tonka bean and benzoin that gives it its characteristic sweetness, like a unique savory dessert.
Pi has good longevity (8 hours) and moderate to high sillage and projection. At times, it smells a bit like cologne for babies in the same vein as Jaïpur Homme, but it is not as sweet or sickly as the perfume by Boucheron. In fact, it is quite pleasant and it’s not cloying, although it is not good to overspray it, even less in warm weather.
Formerly, I did not understand why Givenchy Pi has been so successful in this fascinating world of perfumes, but when smelling it carefully, you cannot help succumbing to its sweet and cozy charm.
    Score:
    Fragrance: 9/10
    Longevity: 9/10
    Projection: 8/10
    Sillage: 8/10
    Value for money: 9/10
    Average: 8.6/10

In the same realm as Obsession for women. Smells sexually adventurous, which I like, with all these juxtaposing notes at the beginning. But then it calms down to something very smooth over time. Has an 80s powerhouse vibe. Not at all like the modern stuff for men. I was tactfully told at the department store “Oh, it’s unisex. But we get more men buying it than women.” I wonder who should I get it for – me or my partner?

I just obtained a 2001 bottle and I’m surprised that it doesn’t seem as strong as the other bottle I have, from 2007. However, it does seem smoother and good for more social occasions. I have yet to try a bottle from the last few years, so I can’t comment on any formulation of this period.

Not a t-shirt amd jeans fragrance. Definitely for a polo or button up shirt, dress shoes type of guy. Safe work scent, amazing cuddle scent. My juice doesnt turn balsamic or nasty like some reviews say. Must be chemistry or b.o. safe scent, get it online somewhere, not from macys where its still 70+$

Blind sniffed this and i was immediately reminded of Donna Karen signature from the early nineties, very nice.

Very soft sweet smell, doesn’t last long but people will notice it in the first few hours. A bit feminine so not every man can wear it, needs to be the right place, time, outfit etc. I keep a bottle stocked up for certain occasions. If you’re looking for something a bit more masculine stick with the Givenchy Play Intense.

Pi Givenchy; interesting! Oh! for men?! Even more so! Said the adventurous woman who sprayed this on her wrist! She then smiled and closed her eyes!
The opening on my skin is a mixture of sweet Vanilla, almond, and tonka with green elements of basil and tarragon. It’s unique and lovely! I also get a hint of neroli here in the opening. On my skin, the opening does have a soapiness hint which is pleasant and very short lived.
After a few minutes benzoin, vanilla and almond come out very strongly and start dancing with a nice citrus note. There is a lot of green-ness and woodiness going on in the back. It’s a very deep and rich smell. I love it, but unfortunately, it doesn’t project that well which is surprising considering the scores that people left here regarding the sillage. :/ It might be because I’m testing in June? I’ll definitely use my decant in the fall and update. At the moment I rate this fragrance 8.5 out of 10
I think this is the perfect fragrance to buy for your man but then wear it together! Haha! But in all seriousness, I think men should test this before buying it because some men don’t like to smell of this much sweet vanilla themselves. As a woman, if I smelled this on men I would think what a gorgeous sexy smell. It just makes me starry-eyed! Did I mention how much I love this?! Ok, I’ll show myself out now!

On my skin, this smells like a weaker and less synthetic version of Jaïpur Homme. No sneezing here, while I cannot wear Jaïpur without grabbing for my tissuebox. Perfectly unisex (both scents are), sweet, balmy and different from others in that category.

Despite my issues with longevity, I caved and purchased a full 3.3oz bottle lol. I never thought I’d buy a bottle but man the scent of Pi is so amazing for me that I just had to have it in my collection. So far, I enjoy wearing this when I’m relaxing at home, or right after a shower. I also think it would be suitable for those Netflix and chill type of moments lol. Enjoy guys!
BTW, anyone know how or why they named this juice after a mathematical constant?

I bought this over the hype…
From now on, I am buying decants.
    Wasted money on this thing.
It smells like hand soap, old lady moisturizer/powder my granny used back in the day.
    No thanks.
    Trade anyone?!
In the drydown: I’ll give it one thing, it smells like springtime in the garden, after a light mist. Which also remind me of my granny.
    Still gonna trade it.
Will i buy this again…hell no.
If no one trades me, then it will just still on my shelf collecting dust.
I used seven sprays…both wrist, behind my ears, back & front of my neck and chest.
