Description

Chopard is launching a new fragrance for men which will first be launched in the Middle East. It is inspired by the Orient and contains dark and seductive spices, leather and dark wood. The composition signed by perfumer Dominique Ropion, highlights oud, completing the oriental character of the edition.

Composition of the new fragrance CHOPARD OUD MALAKI offers luminous accords of grapefruit in the very top of the composition, along with aromatic blend of artemisia and lavender. The heart accentuates masculinity with leather accords combined with tobacco and spices, while base notes highlight oriental notes with a combination of oud, ambergris and mysterious, dark, woody notes.
Fragrance Chopard Oud Malaki can be obtained as 50 and 80 ml Eau de Parfum, available since 2012.

Fromthebay sums this scent up very well. Oud Malaki is criminally underrated. I discovered it looking at tobacco scents.
I have a checkered history with oud scents. I find most harsh and grating on my nose but not Oud Malaki. The edges are round and very smooth. The tobacco is not too sweet and plays very well with the woody notes. There is a superb progression and many notes are clearly defined not a muddled up mess. Everything is in perfect balance and to me this one punches well above the msrp asking price. My skin eats fragrances alive so when I get 8 hours it’s nothing short of a miracle and Oud Malaki accomplishes that. Lasts days on clothes.
As of roughly 8/18 this line has disappeared from Chopard’s website…..multiple backups purchased it’s that good

Strange. This opens with a huge blast of smoky spicy dusty wood–very, very dusty. After a few hours at least, that overwhelming dustiness calms down and this turns into a really nice scent… I don’t know if it’s worth putting up with those first few hours though. I typically enjoy smoky fragrances but this one is just too much for me. Perhaps it’s not so strong when smelled from a distance as I received some compliments (and people will notice it–this is a powerhouse and lasts forever). I don’t think this is a buy for me though. If you can get over or like the extreme dustiness of this, you’ll adore it.

There is underrated and then there is UNDERRATED!!!!!!! Oud Malaki is easy to overlook or even underestimate, but as an oud based fragrance Chopard’s Oud Malaki is a rich and original take on oud and tobacco, that earns its’ praise and deserves more hype.
The opening of Oud Malaki is sweet and spicy, but not in that typical sense of most woody spicy fragrances. With Oud malaki we get a good dose of oud, and it isn’t hidden or tamed, it is framed by tobacco and spices. There is almost a dusty effect to this mix of notes and its really fantastic. After the opening subsides we get a bit of salty freshness with the grapefruit and ambergris. The arrival of these two notes gives the scent another dimension breaking up the dusty element and giving the scent a pulse of freshness. The dark woodsy notes and leather eventually enter the fold and add this time a layer of richness to Oud Malaki. Finally, Oud Malaki ends on a retro vibe and an herbaceous touch of class with a bit of lavender and artemisia. The note separation is remarkable with this fragrance and the Chopard quality is very apparent.
Oud Malaki is not an in your face oud scent. Nor is it a rich tobacco scent. What you actually get with Oud Malaki is balance and versatility. This fragrance is well put together, this isn’t a composition of a slap you across the face explosion of one or two notes, there is instead progression and variety that is unveiled to the wearer. Oud malaki is clearly a cold weather performer and slays under a sweater, scarf or heavy coat. OM is very long lasting so easy on the trigger. OM can dress up or dress down, so you can use this fragrance casually or formally. This is a real pleasure to wear so keep it out of the office and share it with those you hold dear. Give Oud Malaki a spray when you want to feel seductive and regal against a strong fall or winter breeze.

Wow! This is definitely in the same ballpark as Tom Ford Tobacco Oud! They have some very distinct differences, but even still, Tom Ford’s got a run for his money on his hands with this one! This is REALLY good!
This starts out a bit more bitter and less sweet and less woody compared to Tobacco Oud, but it becomes sweeter and smoother after about 1-2 hours, with more pronounced tobacco spice.
Longevity is great, projection is great. ‘Nuff said! Worth the price ($55 on Notino)? Absolutely!

Instant pleasure from beginning to end; and a complement getter every time I wear it. I normally do not rate colognes with a number but if I did, this one would be 10/10.
Totally disagree about the poor projection comment down below, probably is about body chemistry, my overall experience with this fragrance is great, is not a monster of sillage and projection as the Amouages I got, but I love this Oud Malaki because of its subtleness and elegance.

This is unisex completely. Rose Malaki without the rose. similar to Molton Brown Oudh Accord or Oud Saphir but a little more oud and less amber creamy sweetness, has a bit of a chypre drydown

This fragrance is a rugged hairy chested kind of guy scent.Think of Michael Kors for Men dialed down! The dry down on my skin got a little pretty, not a bad thing just unexpected.A Fall/Winter snuggling kind of scent;more cigar bar than nightclub.Doesn’t seem to be dense enough as leaving a scent trail, but I think it’s power is more apparent up close. The bottle is just CLASS!Notino.com formerly beauty-spin is where I purchased my 80ml for a pretty decent price!Solidly masculine scent without the “Notice Me” factor of more youthful scents nowadays. If you are looking for more manly subtlety vs in your face,Oud Malaki may be your scent. Two thumbs up from me, mine is blind buy btw and not at all disappointed!Next, going for the Noble Vetiver by Chopard, hope I like it as much as Oud Malaki… Enjoy.

I wanted to leave a follow-up review on this, after having known this fragrance for well over a year now.
I still enjoy it. The “oud” name is a misnomer in my book, as I really don’t get much of an oud note out of this. Perhaps the synthetic substitute isn’t strong enough to compete with the tobacco note, which is more smothering. But that’s not a bad thing… there’s PLENTY of oud fragrances out there.
I do not enjoy the start of this. It’s overwhelming. It’s cloying, smothering, and inappropriate for warmer climates. But this does abate and the dry down makes it all worthwhile. I’m glad I decided to keep it, because I was a bit on the fence for a while. And for those of you who waited, this is the time. Some discount channels have this fragrance rather cheap these days. I paid like $65 USD originally. It can now be had below $50 USD in the USA if you look hard enough.

There’s mainly oud, leather, wood and ambergris on me. All of them well-behaved and castrated. Nothing funky or challenging, which is not a bad thing! Because it makes it wearable, even on daily basis. Likeable.

it’s an incredible creation where woody notes, tobacco & spices amalgamate in a very sophisticated though seductive scent.
i bought it for me because i felt it can go unisex and i loved it once tried.
its sillage is very strong as my friend didn’t stop telling me that she can smell my perfume as long as i move my hands.
in the beginning i smelled sandlewood in it and i am surprised that it was not mentioned above, but i think that because there is enough wood in the composition to smell so woody.
i recommend it for those who love spicy warm woody perfumes

wow! A great blind buy for me! Oud Malaki is an interesting cross between dark and light. Closing my eyes I am in a dark wooden shack, sunlight is peaking through the cracks in the wooden boards and around the door frame. And I am surrounded by a dusty, woody, and cedar feel. Although Cedar is not listed as a note, but it is there. I get a very peppery oud scent in the dry down, reminiscent of Bvlgari Man in Black.
OM has great longevity and projection on my skin.
Tom Ford Tobacco Oud (another great scent) has been compared to this one. I can honestly say that I do not get the comparison on these. They are 2 different scents to my nose.
Bottom line: If you like Masculine scents, you should try a sample of this one.

my second review of this masterpiece . i own 5 bottles of this scent because the first time i smelled it i fell in love with it and bought a few back ups and they’re all mine . this smells so good its a scent that i really crave . I love the sweet cedar and woods and tobacco in this so much . But be warned this edp is quite strong about 2 sprays is enough any more than that you could annoy people around you. through out the day i might give myself another spray .
longevity is very good lasts even longer on clothes .
    sillage is huge .
    awesome cold winter performance .
for summer can get a bit too powerfull and cloying so it kinda works best when the summer sun goes down and the heat of the day begins to reduce .
10/10 scent and the bottles are very nice thick heavy glass .

100% certified greatness!! This is the prime example that one doesn’t have to always buy niche to have a great quality and long lasting scent. Who would of ever thought…Cartier? Known for their exquisite luxury Swiss timepieces…goes to show that this is a great company making sure no product goes out with their name on it that is not at the top of its game in quality .
Ok, now…Dominique Ropion is a flat out genius too. I love his style and he puts out magnificent pieces, many are feminine frags, but this isn’t!!. This is a Oud that one has probably smelled before but it’s of high quality and unique enough to own. It’s going to last too.. Great longevity.
**I have a extra backup bottle for sale too on eBay- under the name jran05

I really liked this but it was not at all what I was expecting. It’s a lot less dark than I thought it would be due to some of the comparisons I’ve read. There are plenty of comparisons to Spicebomb but I would say they are only about 25 percent similar.
I get a very strong Grapefruit and Lavender opening. Then the tobacco and spices start to warm it up a bit with the wood (including the oud) staying quite subtle but to my nose the fresh opening always hangs over the warm base like a cooling shroud. The dry down is mostly about the ambergris with the previous notes still playing the leading part.
I own several Middle Eastern fragrances not listed here, have a few Raghba offerings and have smelled quite a few other Arabian houses and this seems extremely Western to me. It’s a nice Orientalized Western Spicy Woody Fresh scent.
I will be wearing this on hot summer days and early evenings.
This should prove to be one of those people pleasing office type scents.

If Fragrantica had an “indifferent/meh” button, I would use it for this one. Oud Malaki is just OK. As Cytherian mentioned below, Tobacco Malaki would be more apt. The oud here is the synthetic variety and buried under tobacco and a cumin heavy spice note. The problem with cumin as a note in a fragrance, if you live in South Asia, is that it’s a part of pretty much all cuisine and you end up smelling like you just came out of the kitchen where a spicy curry is being prepared. So no, not my thing. Also I dont know if it’s been reformulated but longevity and projection are also below average on me. Skin scent after an hour and lasts about 3-4 hours tops. So altogether, not bad, not great either. Would I wear it if somebody gifted me a bottle? Probably. Would I pay retail for it? Hell No. much better options out there at it’s price range.
PS. My earlier review might have been a tad harsh. I have a feeling this would perform better in colder weather. Will put it aside until next winter and give it a go. Maybe the cumin would not be so prominent.

    Chopard Oud Malaki
    Sexy, warm, bold.
The opening is a bold grapefruit with clean lavender. The sweet tobacco quickly shows its presence on my skin. The cedar and spices is under the tobacco, cedar adds depth to the fragrance, herbal edges from the artmesia is very delicate.
Tobacco, spices and leather The oud is beautiful here it is elegant and very exotic. I catch wafts of the artmesia from time to time. The fragrance warms up with ambergris, the ambergris here feels more like amber with a benzoin-like nuances. It is lovely with the tobacco, oud, spices in the forefront. Longevity and sillage are both great!
Oud Malaki is an elegant, sweet oud-tobacco combination! Oud Malaki and Rose Malaki are both lovely fragrances!

Oh wow… on first spray I thought to myself… This smells like something but I just cant think of what it is. A few people got the same vibe I did and that is: Spicebomb. Its a nice fragrance (different if you haven’t smelled Spicebomb), but I was hoping for something more different and unique. Was hoping for more Oud and Tobacco. Its a good alternative if you can find it for a good price.

Open up this bottle and sprayed a little on the skin, and my, my! Simply super! Sure that I am going to order another bottle of this. Not over powerful, but there. So pleasant of a smell. Took me a while to get, but I am glad I did so. This is top quantity niche stuff! Without the high price of paying for quantity. Nothing more that I can say. Just going to enjoy this Parfum!

Very nice. Oud Malaki reminds me a little bit of Tom Ford’s Oud Wood, but I actually think this is better, at least in terms of performance. It starts out with a dry, spicy tobacco and smooth, synthetic oud. I’m not using the word “synthetic” negatively here–it’s just to describe the type of oud note that this fragrance incorporates. Most compositions use synthetic oud as opposed to the real stuff that is found in oud oils and attars, and smells completely different. Anyway, the beginning is spicy and substantial without feeling heavy, and the oud note is exceptionally smooth. It melds seamlessly to skin and radiates a warm, mellow glow that only a well-produced oud note can achieve. After an hour or so, Malaki transforms from its spicy tobacco and woods beginning to a rich amber base. The amber reflects tones of benzoin, vanilla, and caramel. Traces of its opening notes remain leaving their accent upon the amber and this is how the fragrance persists for the remainder of its time. Projection and longevity are both excellent (10–12 hours beginning with about 2-3 feet of projection).
Overall, Oud Malaki is an easy and comfortable wear. I was expecting something sort of “fancy,” but it’s not…and that’s a good thing. It seems completely appropriate for a casual night out in the fall and winter months, but could just as easily be dressed up for a formal occasion. It’s more cozy and homey than opulent, but it’s also elegant and of an obviously high quality. If you enjoy Oud Wood, Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s Oud, or fragrances such as Halston Man Amber or Ambre Sultan by Serge Lutens, then Oud Malaki is definitely worth investigating. Thumbs up for this absolute success from Chopard.

This is a statement scent, a scent that says ” I’m at work today bitches”! It really is a good scent to have on. Although not a everyday scent, it is a statement when worn. The fragrance starts off with this wet tobacco and then the woodiness kicks in and stays until the amber makes its way around the corner…the oud and smokiness holds it all together but please be careful on the sprayer…it’s a powerful fragrance! Similar to Manceras Black to Black as far as long lasting and smell.

Blind bought for two reasons. One I can’t find a bad review. Two the nose behind this one is D.R… Who is a G. Update…
It’s here. Today’s the day. I received this gem in the mail. This is on my top 5. It’s better than Gucci pour homme one , for now. I can’t even describe how good this is. Edp. Master nose behind it. Transforms on skin to something one would only find in niche perfumery.
    Wow
    Wow
    And wow.
    11/10 scent
    15/10 value
    Longevity 8.5/10
    Projection 7/10
Fall winter night perfect… This is great guys, way under rated. I’m getting a couple bc I have a feeling they are selling enough and will discontinue, unless everyone is and are keeping this to themselves…..
I’m also getting a note that is shared with amouage jubilation 25, this is so niche quality it’s not even funny. Niche price and niche perfumer too, just designer brand..

I really like what Dominique Ropion did with this one. While Chopard’s Noble Vetiver and Noble Cedar are fine fragrances for the going discount prices, Oud Malaki is on a different level. This is a wonderfully blended spicy tobacco fragrance. And the unexpected citrus note makes me think a little of Acqua di Parma Intensa Oud (take that and add some tobacco and ambergris). Grapefruit? Yes… and somehow it works.
This should be called “Tobacco Malaki”, but you know how magical the “oud” word is for sales. 😉
Ambergris is “unobtainium” these days. It’s very rare to find this raw material (whale regurgitation) as it is, but add on top of that a massive hunt for this to be used as ingredients for fragrances and you just can’t find the real deal outside of extremely expensive compositions. The ambergris synthetic substitute, pairs well with the tobacco, and has a rather amber-ish quality. The big picture makes me think of a luxury quality humidor housing the finest Cuban cigars.
As for the flacon, it’s the same machining and materials used for the Noble series (with a gold metal finish, rather than silver). Yet, Chopard skimped. “Malaki” isn’t embossed on the side with enamel print. It’s stuck on with a cheap gold colored paper label! So badly done, it straddles over the bottle grooving leaving a gap underneath (no, it’s not a metal placard as it may appear in the photo). If you pushed a fingernail hard on it, you’d probably break through. Anyway, I’d just assume pull the darned thing off it became unsightly. The bottle actually looks nice naked.
    🙂
    Fragrance: 8.7/10, Longevity: 8/10, Value: 8/10.

rich tobacco smoothness that blends seamlessly with the wonderful trinity of woods, leather and spices. the oud is sorta there but not really. like a celebrity guest rapper on an unknown rapper’s single. there, but not doing all that much.
there’s a deep, dense and balsamic accord struck by all the ingredients. some of the time it’d be a little too sweet and dense, but it is a masterpiece nonetheless. smooth and really sophisticated…

Okay so oud testing again here we come…
This is powerful, very astringent at first. Think the grapefruit note is really, really strong, it has a sharp incense like aroma. I am not really getting oud, just sharp cypress resin note and sweet tobacco over the top. A bitter note in between must be the wormwood. I am enjoying this, it has gone a bit minty after it has dried.

oud malaki fit for royalty, exuding majesty and mysticism from the first fresh top notes that quickly develops into a sophisticated lavender vibe, settling into an amphora tobacco aura and coming down to a complex oud and ambergris scent that stays for a long time. This sensuous scent spells sex, class, sophistication. Has the awesome power to attract and hook the opposite sex. Scent your room and your bed with it for a perfumed garden, kama sutra experience.

  36. :

A great smell of tobacco blended with an accord that reminds me of Costume National Homme (also from Ropion) for a while over a faint note of oud that is never the star of the composition.
Is quite refined and almost transparent, it feels like it’s not there, but it is leaving whiffs of a suave and elegant aroma around the wearer.

  37. :

    5 out of 5

What an incredible composition. Upon application the beautiful sweet tobacco note takes center stage right along with the spices. This is a richly spicy fragrance throughout it’s lifespan. Supporting the main players are the ambergris and the leather, which lend a hand in keeping the fragrance from becoming a spicebomb. The oud and the woods roundout this royal oil with the ‘woodsy’ notes becoming more prominent later in its lifespan.
This fragrance is also similar the D&G the One, as both have a sweet tobacco vibe. Oud Malaki however, flaunts its Middle Eastern influences – using the spices, oud and ambergris to create a sharper more pronounced fragrance.

superb, exquisite and refined. there’s a depth of character to this scent that is mesmerising. the oud is *barely* recognisable, which works in its favour. there’s a slight boozy element to this (and only minutely boozy) wonderful concoction. the tobacco and woodiness take centre stage here. i think it’s the same ‘woody’ smell as nasomatto’s ‘black afghano’. for me, five stars…

One reviewer compares Chopard Oud Malaki to Spicebomb, and I have to say that I do not entirely disagree. There is also some overlap with Dirty English. Mainly the overlap has to do with the aromachemical base of vague woodishness.
This creation from Dominique Ropion (or was it from his assistants and signed off by him?) offers a peppery oudoid blend ensconced in a very big and bold blast of aromachemicals. Not for me, but of course this is intended for guys. I do believe that it would be better suited for them. To me, it smells very synthetic and somewhat unappealing. The “mysterious, dark, woody notes,” as they are described in the marketing text, are “mysterious” to the point of being alien. I really don’t want to smell like this and could never sleep in this scent. In fact, I’m thinking about reaching for Juliette Has a Gun Vengeance Extrême, which is the most powerful potion in my collection and the only perfume with the ability to mask the sort of tenacious “stuff” I’m smelling here.
This design house has always offered lower-priced fragrances such as Madness and Wish, and I fondly recall having enjoyed wearing Casmir for a while, though it eventually became too sweet for me. Oud Malaki will never make it into my armoire because I cannot get past the opening blast of woodishness to find much of anything else. I really don’t smell anything close to oud in this mix. I appear to be hypersensitive to the “stuff” which I have decried in this composition, so I enjoin others simply to try before they buy!

Oud Malaki is a composition in which oud plays the nice guy with tobacco and the rest of the notes, making this more at home with a suit or something dress-casual than a dishdasha. This is a good effort to bridge the gap between the West and the Middle East in perfumery.
Oud Malaki is similar to Nasomatto Duro in this aspect. But these compositions only share a few notes in common – not enough to make one a dead-ringer for the other if the nose is sharp.
On my skin and fabric, this has sillage suitable for a gentleman and the longevity is moderately long-lasting. While this isn’t necessarily ground-breaking, it’s one of the better offerings with oud from a European perfume house – and much more affordable than some of the major fails out there….

Never try finding tobacco notes any further ; here is the whole thing . I have this royal scent on a strip next to my bed and I can feel the tobaccoy leathery juices filling the air all around me . Starts off a bit spicy , then it begins to get cooler and classier every minute , dries down into the best woody fragrance u might ever dream of . Reminds me of Gucci pour homme 2 when it dries down ,yet , GPH2 is just a faded shadow comparing to this Chopard masterpiece . Another pour homme jumps up into mind here … that is Bogart PH , but again , bogart is too sharp and harsh while chopard’s is more refined and well balanced . I will buy this Oud Malaki tomorrow to enjoy each and every drop . 100 ml for 85$ is what I call a good catch .
    Longevity 8/10
    Sillage 9/10
    Scent 10/10
    Have to tell u that I am a huge wood/tobacco lover .

When you first apply it the oud smell is dominating but after a while the leather/tabacco scent becomes more prominent. Sexy, Strong, Excellent for winter.

I want this!! Looks so good!
If it is as good as the Noble Cedar, it’s even worth it!
