Wow this is honestly one of the best rose soliflore ever—rich, deep, slightly powdery, yet fresh (not too stemmy, just the petals), not too bright or dark (I picture red velvet), not Oriental (which most of those aforementioned “heavy-hitters” are), not “girly,” and quite realistic with a touch of romanticism—everything seems just right; immediately makes me picture that scene in American Beauty, but maybe with the Queen of England lol I secretly like it more than Chateau Krigler 12 but it’s not as “interesting” (since it’s a soliflore), and I would never pay that kind of price.

Caroline Kennedy, daughter of Jackeline Kennedy and John F. Kennedy, was quite fond of this perfume. At the time the bottles by Krigler sold at the Plaza Hotel and still do today. After the death of JFK, when Caroline was becoming a young woman, Jackie would take her to the hotel to pick out a fragrance. Manhattan Rose was first launched in 1944 during World War 2 and has continued to be a commercially available fragrance. It is meant to smell like a sweet young New York girl at her society debut. As such it has a rather dignified and lady-like but sweet air, clean green, velvety, soapy, angelic and aromatic. It reminds me of the aldehyde florals of yesteryear like Arpege, L’Aimant, and Chanel No. 5 and No. 22. Also similar to something like Caron Royal Bain or White Shoulders by Evyan. It seems most like White Shoulders. It also has a nod to Tea Rose by The Perfumers Workshop which actually came out after this scent so Tea Rose might be a dupe for this. The difference lies in the dry down which turns so powdery and yet green that it’s hard to compare it to other fragrances.
The opening is of fresh and effervescent aldehydes. The aldehydic chemicals are like soap suds in your bath water when you are taking a bubble bath. There is an innocent air at first, very dainty and princess-like. I can see why Caroline loved the fragrance right from the opening. A pretty pink and red rose listed as a note of tincture of rose emerges but it’s more like rose water. This is definitely rosewater. The sweet rose petals are joined by violets. The violet eventually takes over the rose scent and becomes powdery. The powder note is talc powder in it’s nature and a bit like make-up but feminine and very stylish, pretty, delicate. The violet and rose aroma linger for a while.
As the fragrance dries, the green and woodsy cypress emerges. This is a very woodsy-green dry down that borders on a chypre. However because it is so linear and so simple, without any other woodsy notes or greens like patchouli, vetiver or other herbal essences, this is not as big a chypre nor even a traditional formal chypre. It is still very youthful with the soapy aldehydes and the rose, but the dry down is a good support for those florals. And still it is very green cabbage rose. Green leaves, green stems, bushes. It’s all about those garden scents or greenhouse aromas. The musk in the end is very nice, dark, leathery and green with cypress leaves. The fragrance lasts a good amount of time over 7 hours and can be worn in the day time or night time. Formal or semi formal. The perfume has a vintage air but can also smell like something newer and more recent. It smells like something made in more recent years by Jo Malone, Penhaligon’s or Piguet. I do love that cypress! A beautiful casual and formal flexible fragrance. It matches with dresses and suits. This is wonderfully old fashioned and yet modern and subtle but impressive. Best worn in spring summer and autumn. The musk in the dry down along with the cypress also give it a warm winter vibe so this perfume is basically an all year all season scent.
Manhattan Rose is a beautiful ingénue New York Manhattan girl. She is sweet but smart, intellectual, educated and very independent. She does remind me of Caroline Kennedy. I have been a fan of hers since she was little but wish she would come out into the public limelight and lead the way for women to get into the highest public offices of the country. She should have run for President in 2016. How much would you like to bet that even as a Democrat in a Republican-majority US as we live in now with a campaign that brought memories of JFK her father and with solid policies that would have been approved by JFK and promises to finish what her father couldn’t, she would be our President right now. Caroline is a wonderful American and I am so glad that in the very least this fragrance pays tribute to her.

Krigler is a House not for the faint of heart nor the faint of pocket…… Frankly speaking though, unless you can get this heavily discounted like under $100USD- stay clear please…. In this DNA, I’d quicker reach for Kashan Rose, Rose Goutte, Rose de Siwa by MDCI Parfums or Atelier’s Rose Anonyme…….
Just “OKAY” for me- nothing complex, nothing challenging, especially when put up against many of the heavy-hitters in the niche game these days….. So…., if you really really want that Rose scent that has ***star power***: Creed [Windsor], Guerlain Rose Barbare, Dior [Ambre Nuit], Frederic Malle [Portrait Of A Lady, Lipstick Rose, Un Rose], Xerjoff [More Than Words], Xerjoff [Damarose], Heeley [Hippie Rose], Sospiro [Wardasina], Francis Kurkdjian Lumiere Noire & PHI Une Rose de Kandahar by Tauer Perfumes…, etc! The list is endless when it comes to quality niche rose scents and I may have just scratched the surface….. If you’re SERIOUS about your rose frags- leave this one be……

It opens with a sheer fresh watercolor of a pink rose with green and citrus notes that quickly becomes a rosy aura supported by a slightly spicy (mace) wood heart blended with a lovely soft violet note. It’s a high quality fragrance, but it’s concentration is more like an EDT than an EDP. You need a lot of sprays of this one to get the full effect, which is lovely indeed. Very natural smelling, you definitely will want to reapply for that beautiful rose opening. Terrible cost/ spray ratio.

Every true, full rose perfume, of which Krigler MANHATTAN ROSE is one, inevitably invites comparison in my mind to TEA ROSE. In this case, my immediate reaction to applying MANHATTAN ROSE was: “Smells like TEA ROSE.” All of the stems, leaves, and thorns are included here along with the velvety petals and together they produce a very rich rose experience indeed.
In a direct side-by-side comparison, I find it very difficult to tell the two contenders apart, and because they both have medium sillage and excellent longevity, I am compelled to choose TEA ROSE over MANHATTAN ROSE for the simple reason that it costs 1/50th as much! No joke: my 2oz bottle of TEA ROSE cost $4, so I recommend that savvy perfumistas–who do not shy away from bargain-bin bottles, provided that they harbor within them genuine perfume–save their big Krigler bucks for something else from this house!

Love roses? It’s a must try for you then!Krigler’s rose is green, fresh, washed by a spring rain. It is not sweet like Bulgarian rose. There’s a little powderness in the base, I guess due to violet notes. Truly, it is one of the most romantic and feminine scents ever!
