Description

New L’Instant de Guerlain pour Homme is a respectable pair for the woman’s L’Instant de Guerlain. It was created in 2004 and features an ideal balance of passion and peace, recognition of feelings and power of reason – that is the portrait of L’Instant de Guerlain pour Homme man. The freshness of citrus is complemented by originality of anise and jasmine in the top notes. The heart is warm and masculine: patchouli, cedar, Indian sandalwood, Lapsang tea, cocoa beans and lavender. The base unites hibiscus seeds and musk.

The nose behind this fragrance is Beatrice Piquet.

One thing man need to start doing to become gentleman:
Need to use L’Instant de Guerlain 😉

L’instant pour homme eau de toilette opens up with a blast of rather nondescript citruses that soon make space for star anise and jasmine. It is a peculiar start for a scent and quite unique at that, feeling both fresh and staid. As per usual for Guerlain, the magic starts happening after the average customer has stopped waving the test strip around.
What starts to emerge is a very pleasant sweet powdery scent that feels like a light gourmand at times with its cocoa notes while patchouli gives the perfume some structure. It is a very smooth blend to the point that it is hard to pick individual notes at times. I can pick up something green, something spicy, floral and even nutty in it. I can smell the sandalwood too which reminds me of Samsara. It feels like a Guerlain and at the same time doesn’t.
What finally solidifies L’instant pour homme as a Guerlain masterpiece is not any adherence to Guerlain’s heritage but the indescribable feeling of it. The scent almost feels like it has been meant to be relayed to others with words like warm, luminous, smooth and complex. It is a scent you simply have to smell for yourself.
L’instant almost seems like a melancholy object in the sense that it would have been a perfect scent auguring the future of Guerlain, bringing modernity to their lineup in the best possible way without dividing their history to past and the present so glaringly as today despite its nose not bearing Guerlain family name. I admire Thierry Wasser especially for his skill in keeping the history of Guerlain alive but I don’t think he has yet made a scent that quite measures up to this one.
As a side note the performance is excellent on clothes and in my opinion spraying on fabric is the best possible way to experience this. On skin it is still a lovely scent but the performance is quite average.

L’Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme is a fantastic fragrance- often overshadowed by his boisterous, but also delightful younger brother.
I like Extrême very much, but the more reserved original seems to be a smoother composition that so easily becomes a part of me when I wear it.
This one I wear more for me.

As well as the vintage Givenchy Gentleman, L’instant de Guerlain pour Homme has a magic to bring back the memories of good old days. It is a comforting perfume, blended to the perfection. Such a masterpiece usually happens once in a decade or less. Expertly composed in a way none of the ingredient stands out. Like philharmonic orchestra – each note compliments the other one and stands next to each other in a harmony. Hands down.

If anyone has a cap to a bottle that is empty, almost empty, or you just don’t care for your caps, please PM me. I have (3) 4.2Oz testers that I’d like to have caps for.
Thank you all very kindly for your time, it is greatly appreciated.
This juice is impressive. Extremely impressive.

This has the ‘Wow’ factor for my nose.
Visually stunning in its commanding flacon, and with an incongruous series of invisibly blended notes to leave one on a delicious cloud at the first spray and already craving more before the first breath has ended.
Cramming my face to it for satisfaction is folly. It has to be consumed as if air, lightly taken, but with absolute necessity, and in constant supply.
This is a sensual,auto-erotic soufflé for the soul. The ideal man would smell like this. He is usurped however, for the most failed of us now have at least one of his charms.
    Exquisite.

A 10 out of 10 in my book. B4 D&G The One , there was this one. And all the others that has come after …. amazing nose , an attention getter without knocking you or the person that is lucky to indulge in this magic elixir.

tried this at a Guerlain outlet, very nice but it is more of an acquired taste. Not everyone will love this but for me it is different than other scents, unique…warm fuzzy a gentleman scent deciding to buy on my wish list.

Beloved scent!I own it since it came out.Can a scent be heavy and light all at once? Yes, L’instant can.
Unique and classy with strong character.I love how long it lasts on the skin and the warmth it radiates.Recently I bought the edp version but for me,this is a little better.Wears better during colder months.

Bentley, Patek Philippe, L’Instant de Guerlain—all convey a similar sort of refinement and status. Men whose lifestyle provides such occasions for elegance will appreciate L’Instant as a fragrance that deftly manages to balance aloofness with sex appeal.

I bought my bottle in 2014 and literally never wore but a few times. Tonight I pulled it out of my drawer and decided to give it another shot. My wife who rarely compliments what I wear, immediately perked up and told me how good I smelled. It’s still floating around my skin. I’m getting a sweet and creamy, somewhat citrusy, patchouli scent. It really is quite nice. It’s unique enough and nice enough to be a dressed up signature scent for someone. I’d say age range for this is 30+. To me, this is almost too decadent for casual dress.
Don’t know if I will wear this much, but it is much nicer than I had remembered.
    8/10 scent!

    Blind bought this.
UPDATE: Well, now after half an hour, I know why I couldn’t smell a damn thing. The smell is quite overpowering. My parents could smell it, and said it smells like a signature scent for me… But close to my wrist, it smells quite yuck… In the air it seems to be much better… I smell like LEMON CHEESECAKE. I’m not even exaggerating. I give it a 7,5/10.

This is the scent that put into motion D&G “The One” ,”Dior Homme” “Silver Shadow” Davidoff.
I have these and other flankers , but none come close to this one the balance of the ingredients in this bottle is perfect in every way. If there is such a rating of a perfect 10/10 this would be one of them.
In fact the Silver Shadow I feel comes closest to the Guerlain. It is slightly sweeter. The “Intense”version of L’Instant is also a force to be reckoned with.Rich, Elegant, Masculine without an over powering presence. This pedigree of a fragrance and design house that has lasted for well over 100 years says a lot!
I believe this scent, this bottle is worth every nickel.

I hadn’t used this in a while, and forgot what a great classic this is.
I use mostly niche fragrances now, but this is going back into a frequent rotation for Fall and Winter.
When you feel like wearing a nice, warm, all around aromatic; and your tired of the generic Bleu, Savage, The One type fragrance, this is the “one” for me.
This is warm and smooth, sophisticated, yet it has the playful fruitiness of the orange note. The bit of Anise gives it a sharp masculine edge. And everyone loves chocolate.
I don’t care for the current formulation of the edp Extreme version. I think it has too much anise. And beware it’s nothing close to the Vintage Extreme version.

  16. :

At first I thought this was too much of a fancypants fireplace smell I also thought the lemon was a bit strange but now I feel like I know what the lemon note is it’s actually like a lemon cake smell not a lemon fruit smell. Its got a cacao smell thats more pronounced in the dry down along with some herbal tea smell thats very well blended, patchouli and sandalwood create a creamy older gentlemen vibe. When I smell this I think of a very intelligent well groomed gentleman having tea in a fancy restaurant with an old collegue discussing world events and what not. Overall a nice scent if you know what you are getting into.

I don’t like this one very much. I bought it blind and am having a bit of buyers remorse. I have worn this like 2 times since I purchased it in the early summer. It smells like nothing in my opinion. It lacks character and depth. This is maybe the most boring fragrance I own. I apologize to those who really like this, but I just really can’t start anything with this bland fragrance.
The best way to describe this fragrance to me is this… Imagine eating a chocolate cake that had no sugar in it. Then someone comes up with an idea to sweeten it using an orange. Yes, that’s how bland this is.

  18. :

I like it although it’s not my top 20. It’s got a lot of feminine flowers in it mixed with wood smell which is interesting. But it doesn’t seem to last very long on my skin.

  19. :

    I love it!!

  20. :

    5 out of 5

Is it nice smelling? Yes it is.
Does it deserve the hype? I guess no.
It is an average fragrance in my opinion, the opening is very lemony with powdery chocolaty dry-down which is the best part.
It reminds me little bit with D&G the one.
I have the EDT version with the new packaging. Projection is powerful but longevity is avergae.
    Update:
I must admit that after wearing this enough and trying so many other fragrances, it started to grow on me. I find it so comforting and classy and I believe I didn’t give it the credit it deserves.

This reminds me of the smell of a Xmas stocking containing, amongst other things, a Satsuma and Terry’s Chocolate Orange, with someone sticking a brew on in the background. Very nice, if a bit light.

My nose was assaulted by Lemon, Bergamot, Grapefruit(I love Grapefruit).
Lemon…i only smell lemons.. and that’s a bad thing.
What happen to the other notes?
I’m only getting Citrus and a hint of mint….where are the other notes…?
Did i get a bad bottle or is it a bad batch?
    Help please.
    I’ll update this later.
Edit: It’s the 8th hour and this thing is just a skin scent now.
But why do i still smell lemons and only lemons!?
Never ever buying another frag because of a YouTuber’s review on a fragrance.
    Kick rocks!
    Trade Please!…
I used nine sprays…both wrist, behind my ears, back & front of my neck, chest, front and back of my shirt.
    Will I buy this again?…No.

    Distinguished… For gentlemen only…
L’Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme is a timeless classic. It exemplifies class and a gentlemanly persona. The blend of floral, citrus, and musk notes is a beautiful creation from the house of Guerlain. My only issue with this fragrance is performance – what a pity that longevity was only 3+ hours and at less than arm’s length projection. It was still (barely) detectable on clothing for a longer period. The upside to L’Instant is that it is a great scent and quite flexible to be worn across seasons and to all outings – even close quarters or office settings. If projection were greater, this would be a total compliment magnet.
All said, my final tally for Guerlain’s L’Instant is 4.0 stars out of 5 stars. If performance were better, this fragrance would easily be in my Top 5. If you are in search for an “easy on the nose” fragrance that smells great with flexibility, I highly recommend adding to your collection. You will love it… It is class and a gentlemanly persona. Otherwise, for the collectors wanting a “little more punch” from a fragrance, take a pass. I am sending out a “Like” for the Fragrantica community.
Enjoy your day and happy fragrance hunting…

I have this scent. Its the same bottle, clear edges, but it says parfum.. Deep chocolate, rich and unique. I absolutely LOVE this scent. Top 5. It pushed pure malt down sadly. How could anyone not LOVE this scent? Seriously. Keep ur bottles people. U will someday enjoy it. Im 25 and rocking the fuck out of this. 1 to 2 sprays MAX. All day. This is how you make a frag

    Recieved the bottle shown above..today.
I wanted to purchase this because I see they have a newer….diferent bottle out now…I was afraid of re-formulation possiblities…
This scent is a Guerlain masterpiece IMO. I had previously only tested it in stores and had sample/decants of the EDT and the Extreme versions.
This EDT is wonderful..just as I remembered it. I re-sniffed my decant of Extreme..and..now I want THAT in a full bottle too !!! But, I will pay extra for the older version..for sure !!!
    Happy camper today !!!
I don’t get as much cacao in the EDT compared to the Extreme….so having both is ok to me.

This is something unique. This is where you can be special. This is where you will forever remember the scenes that happened with this scent.
I use it when I travel. And every time I spray, I remember the best moments in my previous trips.
Some fragrances deserve to be part of your best moments and this one is one of them.
For Longevity: it is very good.
For Sillage: it is good but not very good.
And I prefer to have a good Sillage rather than a very good so that I enjoy how it comes and goes rather than bothering me all the time.

  32. :

    5 out of 5

Cacao lovers delight. This is a nice elegant fragrance with a moderate sillage so don’t expect beast-mode with this. The cacao and lemon combination is really interesting and quite pleasant. I wish sillage were a little greater, but other than that, one of my faves in my collection.

Blind bought this based off the great reviews, and my 2.5 oz. bottle arrived today. Not gonna lie, I’m very disappointed. Disappointed in myself that is for not buying a bigger bottle. Man this is nice! High quality, and class all the way. Cooler seasons for sure, but I think you can pull this off in the spring and possibly summer. This is my first fragrance from this house. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Yes, this smells like the scent pyramid listed, and like everyone here describes. That being said, my first impression: I was reminded of Playdoh; my wife’s first impression: “smokey leaves” In retrospect I smell the smokiness she described. This fragrance is a like, the extreme version is a love. The extreme version is more dark chocolaty/even more reflects notes listed. The extreme version is very clearly a Guerlain.

  36. :

    3 out of 5

Opening is like a strange(not bad) lemony chocolate tea but the dry down is heavenly I just have no idea how anyone could make this their signature unless they wear suits all the time this fragrance isn’t rip your clothes off panty dropper sexiness but it’s definately intriguing and intelligent and it commands attention with its depth and complexity I like it a lot I just think it’s limited its such a classy formal fireplace smell.

People are sleeping on Guerlain Creations really, well, where im from they create oil based perfumes that by fluke they smell similar to the originals for those that cannot afford. Pathetic really, Well thank god they failed to fascimile this masterpiece. Best creation by far and best smelling that any sexy man can want. Just annoyed it is hard to find.

Idk why its classified citrusy because what i find was all woody. But dont get me wrong, this is a very good fragrance. Lasts up to 10 hour on my skin and has good projection as well.
It is quite mature, yes, but very classy at the other hand.
Not for everyday use imo, but should be on your arsenal for special occasion

  45. :

    4 out of 5

Starts with a Citrus blast but not overpowering, after a minute or two it develops into a cacao nutty fragrance, that is very gourmandise.
The cacao is warm and soothing, the citrus never really disappears, who will think that cacao and citrus will blend super nice together.
The projection is moderate and non offensive, lasts about 10 hours on my skin.
In my humble opinion the best gourmand i have had the honor to test.

  46. :

    3 out of 5

I didn’t like this at first …I found it a bit too old fashioned and dusty smelling but after a few wearing’s I’ve done a complete 180° ..this is now for me borderline masterpiece ..i get lemon , tea and chocolate expertly blended ..what a crazy mix that takes a bit of initial getting used too, I think it confused me at first (those quirky french again) as I’ve never worn a fragrance like this but I don’t think I’d like to be without it now for the rest of my days. I think it suits a guy in his thirties+ but respect to a younger crowd if they give this a go. Comparable to dior homme in terms of complexity and the way it’s blended but not in how it smells. Performance wise I dont get a great deal of longivity unfortunately, approx 2 hours of note worthy performance and then a further two as a light skin scent but at the price point I just keep spraying all day and will replace.

@Guerlian- Isn’t it time for a flanker like L’Instant Eau de Frachie de Guerlian 2017. Same bottle but fresher juice. Something supportive of the upcoming summer. Please think about it

  48. :

    5 out of 5

This is one of the best scents Guerlain has offered in the last 15 years. I like it better than the Extreme/EDP version personally. I think it has more depth and nuances than the other version. One of my favorite masculine scents. It’s classy, which is no surprise as it is Guerlain. I love this so much! It’s perfect for any occasion, whether it’s at the office or going out.

  49. :

    5 out of 5

Bought this blind trusting that Guerlain is a stamp of quality in itself, having been given the opporturnity to test several of their fragrances. Doesn’t attack on me instantly, begins with some flora; jasmine I think, and anise. Cocoa and citrus follow once it settles on you for a moment.
I find that this fragrance is somewhat difficult to smell on yourself. It doesn’t breach through your nostrils, it’s invincible, but others are certain to take notice. I love cocoa and lemon/bergamot so yeah, it works for me. A safe and an elegant choice! Short to moderately long lasting. Also received some comments on people being able to pick it up from a distance.

    *** L’INSTANT DE GUERLAIN EDT (2016):
It’s a unique fragrance. It’s somewhere in between “fresh” (more than the EDP version) and woody-spicy, with certain sweet touch to it (chocolate-anise vibe that it reminds coconut to my nose). It’s not heavy / incisor at all, in fact I personally find it absolutely exquisite in every aspect: perfectly balanced (the blend is more than good, it’s just perfect), delicious opening and dry down, raw materials of high quality, natural smell (nothing chemical), correct projection and longevity. I’d say it’s a distinguished 4×4 “all terrain”, with category, with class and with a slight vintage touch, nothing out-dated but modern. Its extreme versatility makes it matching perfectly all seasons, day and night, what in other hand means that it doesn’t shine especially in any particular ambient, because there are fresher ones for Summer, warmer ones for Winter and other ones better focused for nights, dating and seductive purposes (more sexy); although its aroma is, like I’m saying, exquisite and with such versatility that is really hard to match. It results to be really delicious and tremendously equilibrated, in the opening as well as in its dry down. A true masterpiece.
    *** L’INSTANT DE GUERLAIN EDP (2016):
The differences with the EDT are: the EDP is more dense and spicier, less fresh and less sweet, even a bit incisor (too spicy perhaps) especially in the opening. It’s less versatile. I don’t find it to be as equilibrated and “rounded” as the EDT, although it does certainly have more longevity. Its dry down is better than its opening, but I still think that the EDT is better aroma overall and more equilibrated, in spite of having less (yet good enough!) projection and longevity than the EDP. Both have true class, but versatile class.
I’d say that both are suitable for all seasons, day and night, with an outstanding versatility (right in the middle of freshness and warmness), being even more versatile the EDT than the EDP. Suitable for all occasions. Although you have to bear in mind that their 4×4 “all terrain” capabilities (versatility) make them also shining less than others in certain seasons or situations. Even so, their aroma (especially the EDT) is so original and delicious. Whereas the EDP is good, really good indeed, but the EDT surpasses it, it’s simply PERFECT.
The EDT comes to be a perfect candidate to be chosen as a signature scent.
    Opening:
EDT = 9.5/10 >>> Delicious, very equilibrated and nothing harsh / incisor.
    EDP = 7/10 >>> Too spicy.
    Dry down:
    EDT = 9.5/10 >>> Exquisite and addictive.
EDP = 9/10 >>> Much better than its opening.
    Projection:
    EDT = 7.5/10
    EDP = 8.5/10
    Longevity:
    EDT = 7/10
    EDP = 9/10 >>> A true winner.

Not a bad fragrance at all, but I hope the Eaux Extreme EDP is better and more versatile then this one.
This isn’t a ‘happy’ smelling fragrance, but it’s definitely sophisticated and elegant.
If you’re under 30 years old, you probably will feel a bit awkward wearing this. I did..
People said I ‘smelled old’ when I had this fragrance on. I’m 26 btw.

  57. :

    4 out of 5

I would never be bothered to describe the notes of this beautiful offering because what is much more important to me is the way it makes me feel.
I love everything about this fragrance. Its name, the bottle, the smell. It produces an enveloping, uplifting and warm sensation resulting from the ingenious reconciliation of the opposing trends in masculine vs feminine perfumery.
I love the alternating olfactory perception. A game of contrasts. Use LIDG when the weather is hot and it’s bright, sparkling, hesperidic. Use it in winter and it’s balmy, calming & smooth.
LIDG’s edible everlasting lemony vibe, infused initially with anise and then sprinkled with cocoa, is so harmoniously mixed with further warm and creamy notes, that resembles the type of upper class gourmand dessert you would enjoy in a fancy French restaurant.
Along with Dior Homme, one of my favorite choices for my private aromatherapy evenings at home, especially when I crave for a discreet yet embracing scent.
    Inviting, comforting, delicate & fresh.

I m not sure is this the real EXTREME because i have bottle like the one on this picture it says everything what this picture show but also says on the bottle EXTREME and it is EDP…
But have to say that the fragrance is something that i can not describe, something out of this world,i don’t know how to say…Opening note is more then EXTREME then the dry part is one of the best thing from this prefume…One word “Monster”…It was a blind buy after reading all those comments and reviews, today i have received my bottle and i m more then happy with the sillage and longevity and also SCENT :)))))))))…

Semisweet Cocoa-patchouli. That is this fragrance broken down into a simple three word definition which also sounds catchy.
I’ve had this frag for a few days now, it is the current formulation (no black borders around the main body of the bottle), but I can say without a shadow of a doubt that patchouli is the main centerpiece with this one.
It’s a very well blended frag, you get that earthy/potting soil smell with the patch from beginning to end, but the cocoa and other notes round out the “dirtiness” quite nicely into a very elegant, soft and almost subtly upscale fragrance. Great for evening wear, cooler days, office, suit wear and even date-night. It seems like it is very versatile. At times it reminds me of D&G The One EDP for some reason, as there is this fresh “cologne-y” kind of smell that comes and goes that I can;t quite put my finger on.
If you are a fan of patch, I imagine you will love this one. And likewise if you don’t like the earthy potting soil smell of patch, then you probably won’t like this one at all. I would say this is a 55% dominant patchouli frag, smoothed out by semi-sweet cocoa and other notes (the other 45%).
It is a very pleasant blend, I don’t really have any patch dominant frags in my collection (aside from some pure patchouli frag oil… and of course the beast-mode A*Men), so this is a nice change of pace to have a patch dominant frag that is elegant, soft and easy-going.

People my first. I need guidance.
I just did buy it at amazon germany, but the perfume looks different. First its an unisex EDP versiom 80ml. Bit I cnanot find in any site this version. Even on the guerlain site. the perfumes top can is transparent and not black. There is no lpurple colour like the feminine one. And the longevity/sillage are bad.
Can anyone guide me to check its original or a fake? I could not imagine Amazon would let fake productos vendors on its site
    Sorry for my english.

Beautiful classy fragrance! I get an elegant anise-ish cocoa perfectly blended off the initial blast! Just ever so slightly sweetened. Dries down to an elegant powdery cocoa. The EDT is a bit weak in longevity, must be sprayed multiple times… 4 to 5 to get a decent 4 to 6 hours IMHO. The L’Instant de Guerlain Extreme version has much better longevity and stronger … though just a tad spicier I feel… blast 2 sprays and you’re good for the day. For overall scent I love the EDT… for overall power, the Extreme version is the way to go. Either way, it’s worth getting a bottle…. I bought both versions and use them depending on what I want…. EDT intimate…. or Extreme hanging out or formal. Two thumbs up for L’Instant de Guerlain!

I don’t understand why people think this smells of chocolate or cocoa. To me it just smell herbal. Nasty harsh herbs. I’ve tried two different samples of this, one was a tester and the other a decant. Neither was the least bit chocolately.

no anise here? I remember trying this some time ago and getting very bright anise note which reminded me of Azzaro pour Homme. L´Instant is a nice stuff btw.

I bought this wonderful gourmand-ish perfume (EDT) for a winter dinner recently after a smell wearing test against the newer L’Homme Ideal (EDT version). Was initially disappointed as the first blast from the sample didn’t scream ‘gourmand!’ like the LHI’s cherry but decided to leave both on to develop over the day.
I am very glad I did as this wonderful and very tasty smelling cacao note started appearing bit by bit. It eventually developed into a great smelling drydown which was very warm, comforting and as some have reported, quite sensual long into the night. My bias towards cacao smells (I love chocolate!) likely swayed my purchase decision but there has been no regrets since.
One thing I learnt with this experience is to always allow a Guerlain to develop as the drydown is where the good stuff is. Overall 9/10 with great longevity and moderate projection. Need to check out the EDP in the future too. YUUMMMMM!
Edit: It worked great over the winter dinner. Was feeling fuzzy all night!

This was my first ‘modern’ Guerlain, after delving into the house’s iconic early 20th century fragrances. And I have to say, I was surprised by how old-school L’Instant feels. That said, I was equally surprised by its contemporary twist.
L’Instant opens with a bright but powdery burst of lemon. As it settles down, patchouli and sandalwood become more prominent, as does the ‘Guerlinade’ accord. I typically associate the smooth Guerlain signature with a vanilla-citrus accord, but L’Instant has no vanilla – so the Guerlinade here must be due to the musk and creamy lavender playing off against the citrus.
So far, so classic. What makes L’Instant so contemporary is the use of cacao. This is no gourmand, however – the cacao is dry and ever so slightly bitter, yet still warm and raunchy. It’s a wonderful note because it plays to the other notes’ strengths – the sweetness of the patchouli; the powderiness of the citrus; the smoothness of the Guerlinade.
On my skin, projection is weak to moderate, but those close to you will definitely detect it. Longevity is good. It’s a very versatile scent – you can wear it during the day to the office, or at night romantically. All in all, it’s a contemporary classic with an old-school bent. Well done, Guerlain.

This is a likable and well-priced fragrance. Many claim this is some sort of a masterpiece and peak in perfumery. I’m in no position to comment on this, but personally I tend to save those feelings of awe and delight for most Creed compositions.
This is a predominantly powdery-citrus smell a la Chanel, but with a very nice grassy, green-tea like feel. There might be a splash of cocoa, but I can barely sense it. Wearing this to me feels like swimming in an ocean of green tea with a lemon in it.
A fresh scent with some edgy grassy character that will definitely sit well in a variety of occasions. A very universal smell also, maybe a bit mor
