Not bad scent that recalls the waves of the sea.

This is such an awesome fragrance complex and dark and fresh simultaneously. I got a compliment on it the first half an hour I had worn it, a younger teenage girl complimented me so hey the younger noses seem to generally appreciate it and it’s a cult classic with some depth to it too.

A journey from the forest to the beachside with a plastic bag following you the entire time.

It’s an aquatic done in a way that is not necessarily marine, but the combination of watery notes, more so fresh water than salt water, with an extremely unique composition consisting of a wide range of fresh, woody, floral notes with a touch of believe or not vinyl. The vinyl may turn some people off, but it’s part of the scent’s aura. Let me explain…
Picture yourself sitting by the pool drying off after a quick swim on a hot summer day in your backyard. There’s a light breeze carrying the scent of nearby flowers and damp woods around you while you catch brief and random whiffs off the warming your skin, and drying the pool’s water glistening on your skin. If you own a pool, you know the scent well. In addition, the sun is beaming down on pool’s liner causing the scent of vinyl in the air around you, especially when there is a light breeze. Picture all those notes around you. Indeed, that is Kenzo Pour Homme. It’s not a sexy scent, nor is it an office or formal scent by any means. And it’s not even a typical beachy/marine or tropical vibe. KPH is 100% a summery vibe in your own back yard sitting by the pool after a swim enjoying a summer breeze. Ahh, the memories.

It’s still a pleasant fragrance, but guys, has nothing to do with original formulation from the early 90s. Kenzo pour homme was a love or hate then and many of us couldn’t stand the smell and huge projection this fragrance had. Now, current formulation, I might say thet it’s a safe fragrance, it’s not aquatic like someone mentioned, not at all. It has a strong, bitter opening, unique, then it turns into a floral and musky sweet scent with some “summer salty beach vibes” on the background. Btw, back in 92 lilly of the valley from Provence region was one of the most proeminent note…

I love this perfume, elegant, fresh and clean, its long lasting fragrance, 8 hours on my skin, 12 hours in shirt, 4 hours projection, love it love it looooove it

I don’t get “marine” from this at all. The word that comes to mind for me is “fusty.” I get musk, very light citrus, and maybe a little cedar, and it’s all very light with poor projection. Opening notes are the same but stronger, which is kind of off-putting.

My friend gave me this mini size bottle when I was in high school.
I love the sweet smell but they changed the smell!!!
I only LOVE the first batch around 90’S.
2nd and 3rd is just strong Marin scent.

I have a flask with bamboo carved on it. Some people say it lasts quite longer, and smells a bit better… All I can say about that is – Bullshit.
Skin scent up to 30 minutes, projetion is non-existent
If you think anyone would smell you, then you’re wrong. No one smells me even when I sit with someone inside a car in excessively hot summer day. Considering the fact that I have to spray those piss 5-7 times, and still nothing happens – it’s a thievery. I don’t get people, who claim that this has any good sillage or longevity. It’s simply not true, basing on my experiences. When I spray half of a bottle, it may sometimes be noticed, when wind slightly blows (or if the fan is turned on to your face with maximum speed).
Scent itself is quite nice though – sea breeze mixed up with morning rain forest kinda feel. But all that is for nothing, if even toilet refreshener lasts longer than this alcohol based water. Expensive kinda alcohol… Will never buy it again.

A great aquatic that really fits the term – and maybe one of the first ??
I’ve been really curious about this one since Nikos starting hyping it several years ago, last month I was so lucky to catch a vintage bottle from 1996 and it’s definitely not disappointing. Fresh and slightly spicy, and kinda like walking at the shoreline with water, seaweed, a little iodine, ozone, musk and all. Not the usual soapy sweet aquatic, but more of the musky, ever so dirty mineral laden scent of seawater. The oakmoss gives it a nice more natural touch, after a little plastic-y opening. The closest resemblance I can think of is Aramis New West, but the Kenzo is not as sweet. Funny thing is, it’s actually so unique that you can recognize it anywhere, even though it’s mixed up of a ton of notes.
I wonder if the current formulation is – at least somewhat – identical ? Will have to try it out at a retailer in the nearest future.

For shure this is the one of 10 most unusual men’s fragrances ever, regarding of smell which is very specific that could be created only at a Far East. Same philosophy goes for Issey Miyake, original and Bleu d’Issey.
So Kenzo is like walking through some exotic forest, entering also exotic beach in some humid weather. Could be perfectly at home At Hawaii, Brasil, Singapore or Thailand ( sorry but this one simply doesen’t fit at Mediteranean ), and it is so special and uplifting perfume. I had one in 1991 and remember excellent sillage and longevity, and is also very sexy as well. Tried one recently, I think that it was much weaker and that special aromas are gone now.If you like this frag.try to find a vintage one with bamboo designed bottle not a smooth one, and you will be delighted with something really unique. But as I mention, it is not for everywhere and everyone, this is a pure Exotic frag. 10/10 ( vintage )

Ahhhhh good old Kenzo. Dont let the age of this gem fool you. This is a hardcore marine frag with great longevity and projection. For the price? It’s a steal

Loved it when it come out, and I was young and innocent 😉
The first “grown up” perfume I ever bought..seaside, forest, some green fragrance…great. It’s a men perfume? Who cares! I liked it, and I was going to wear it.
I still have the bottle, at my mum’s house, and it still has about a 3rd in, I moved and forgot to take it with me as I had limited weight to carry.
As it is in a very dark glass bottle (I have the original bottle, not the streamlined, ugly modern version), and it has been kept in a relatively shady place, so the perfume inside is still perfect, and I used it again all this week…
Yes, it is a “men” perfume, but I like it and use it, and it still has a fascinating personality.
    I definitely still love it.

I like Kenzo Tokyo and Night, they are very nice for me perfumes for the evening, so I bought Kenzo Homme blindly. I took it upon myself … and then a very powerful and evil effect came upon me, he really deafened me, like a famous scene from the film “The Impossible” (Lo imposible ,2012) in the scene of a devastating hurricane. I am very pushed away by this terrible note, which I can not understand-fro me is associated with the smell of death. I think Davy Jones of the Pirates of the Caribbean could have just such a smell… IMHO 🙂

maaan, I love this, like a forest right next to the sea. It is just awesome and does not smell dated!

  20. :

    4 out of 5

Starts off with a very strong and slightly pungeant scent of mahogany, bergamot, and jasmine. Smells very woody and floral at the same time. There is a very small hint of lemon as well but I can’t really detect any sea notes. The mahogany, bergamot and jasmine are in centre-stage. The opening scent to this is not what I’m used to in an aquatic fragrance and reminds me more of Curve for Women by Liz Claiborne than any aquatic I own (due to the jasmine and floral notes). The mahogany smell is very overpowering; and it smells sort of like rubber. The opening is very unique and leans masculine even though it’s clearly a woody floral to my nose but it’s not something I really admire. I am wishing I sprayed less initially as it’s quite strong in sillage. On drydown it’s a bit more palateable but it’s mostly the same floral woody scent of the opening but with less intensity. Not a fan at all. Can still smell the strange rubbery accord which I’m guessing mahogeny. Basenotes to me smell much the same but even lighter, and maybe with a bit of amber. Sillage is strong and longevity is strong; I just don’t like the fragrance at all. Overall impressions are that this is wood and florals with a huge rubber note. Not a fan at all, and I wish I liked this better. This is one of the only fragrances I can say I genuinely disliked, and I am turned off from the Kenzo house as a whole due to this.

Legendary fragrance. Doesnt smell dated but rather classic!
Deep oceanic fragrance and not aquatic.
It is bold and harsh but beautiful and very manly with tons of notes.
    Super longevity.

This was so surprising! Such an old scent and so good! And it’s so sophisticated! You canot smell just one note. It’s so rich, but not overpowering. It’s fresh, but not lemon fresh.
It actually smells like fresh flowers. But kinda manly flowers… it’s so hard to describe, because it’s so much going on. Its one of a kind. I’ve never smelled anything like that ever and it’s definitely one of my favourites now.
    Definitely recommend.

A very comfortable fragrance, with aquatic notes. It is complete for me.

  25. :

    3 out of 5

What a peculiar fragrance…and I mean that in a good way! This is a true aquatic that captures the breeze over the ocean with a salty marine note combined with sage, sandlewood, and what have you. The initial blast is strong, smelling like a cross between…I don’t know, plastic and a medicine cabinet? At first I didn’t like it at all, but after a few applications, I can totally appreciate why this is considered a classic.
Now I refer to Kenzo as a “true” aquatic because most modern fragrances with the aquatic label are loaded with citrusy notes in an attempt to be as fresh-smelling as possible. This is fine and good, but not many of them actually bring to mind the deep sea. Bvlgari Avqa is one, and Kenzo Homme is another, though this one has been doing it for much longer than its puck-shaped colleague.
I can’t speak for any reformulations. I somehow got a bottle from 2008 and it performs well enough…not beastly, but enough to go through its complex note pyramid.
This complexity and the somewhat dated vibe of this fragrance (though I have no problem wearing it, personally) probably don’t make it a safe blind buy, but at the same time I feel like Kenzo Homme is something everyone should have in their collection, along the same lines of Cool Water, Aqua Quorum, Polo Sport, etc. Revolutionary for its time and still standing unique 25 years later as the market moves in a different direction.

it is the only fragrance that i wear sometimes to get compliments from the girls even though i didn’t like it. :)) i aint get used to it because of its salty plastic smell combined with some kind of nose tiring aquatic meterials, and aromatic richness .i dont know where iget or how i get this plastic effect but it is very annoying.in spite of my disappointment ,i gonna keep using this stuff for a while because all the girls and women around me get crazy when they sniff me :))

WTF ??? I’ve bought one a few days ago. Batchcode is 7R01 . Longevity is very poor, like 4-5 hours max!!! Don’t buy it until they’ll understand their mistake with watered down this juice.

  28. :

In one word:Unique. This fragrance is absolutely classical. You don’t find aquatics like this anymore. I bought it for the first time when it was introduced and to this day, I still love it. It smells of a fresh summer day at the beach. It has very nice aquatic notes that makes me and my nose very happy. It lasts a good 7-8 hours on me.This fragrance is the type that makes you pause and think, think deep, as it stimulates the mind and soul. The best vibe is when it’s hot-summer,smells wonderful after one hour.Awesome fragrance.

Never thought that I would go back to this one – I used that right when it came out, had a 50 ml bottle back then in this lovely compact bottle with the relief printed cardboard box packaging – now smelling this in the current formulation some 25 years later, I am amazed what a superb and outstanding composition this is. Its capacity to capture moisture and wetness puts it right aside more obscure gems like MPG original Route du Vétiver, it’s hard to pin down weirdness, makes it a direct precursor of some of Comme’s Synthetic Series or Odeurs – can’t believe that as a mainstream release this has survived all these years. The current version takes me back to the original – surprisingly so, wonder that is has not been utterly shredded with all the flankers and general annual confusion Kenzo perfumes propelled them into over the years – aside from the short-lived exception Kenzo Air. In a time when hipster perfumers and brands still try to lure you in with their dry woods, ouds, incenses and minerals – Kenzo pour Homme offer a brilliant antidote annihilating all of such watered down themes. Yes, it is an aquatic, but with given its pivotal role in the history of aquatics and more so, due to this brilliant moisture, dampness, wetness, it is much more – super contemporary, synthetic, novel, totally wearable high tech and another fine example what an innovative time the early 90’s were for perfumery. Shutters most niche releases in bits and deserves the highest recommendation.
    *
Cerulean’s detailed comparison below is really a helpful guideline – I managed to source a bottle of the first version – that in the grey relief printed cardboard box packaging – the same version and size as I had it when it came out – and the similarity to what Cerulean identifies at as the second version, is stunning !

I love this scent because how good it fits with my skin, and i love it for the emotions it transmits.
A mysterious wild ocean of classy clean woods.
Very unique. The best of Kenzo to me.
Lasts days on clothes, with a powerful sillage.
Synthetic scent, but nothing disturbing even for noses.
The last reformulation is still good, though less powerful and less intense as it used to be.

    Fragrance -Kenzo pour Homme
    Bottle from – 2015
This is a beautiful example of something extraordinary that surprises you because you had almost forgotten about it.A real blast from the past.Kenzo pour Homme is a classic scent, but I don’t think it’s outdated. It is very hard to describe exactly how this smells. This isn’t a typical aquatic fragrance. It’s a complex, deep, woody, aquatic, green and unique scent.I would say rebellious dark green woody aquatic,If that makes any sense.
    Longevity – 9/10(9+hours)
    Silage/Projection – 8/10(nice projection for the first 2-3 hours)
Weather – for more or less any time of year.Best in spring and summer.

This is my second review last one was three years ago just wanted to say this fragrance kind of changes with the weather if it’s nice and warm out the floral notes really stand out they stand out so much you’ll be attracting bees I couldn’t figure out why bees was following me when I was near a garden had about 5 buzzing around me then today my girl sniffed my chest like mmm! smells good you smell like flowers and manly lotion followed by I like this one it’s a keeper

Unique. For me it stands alone in my collection. I was ambivalent upon first sniff. I’m generally not well rehearsed with aquatics but I get it! I smell sea and sand along with some very pleasant woody and vetiver undertones. I was hoping for more salt but it still works. It’s fantastic for work and the daily grind (and Weekends too). Someone mentioned damp in a previous comment. So true. This is the Napali Coastline in my vaguest memories. I like it a lot.

I really enjoy this – it’s very fresh, aquatic, and invigorating. My only concern is that it sometimes smells ‘damp’ rather that just aquatic.

Picked up a 50ml bottle online after trying it out at Hobby Airport. It turns out that it’s a second batch formula version according to Cerulean’s excellent review.
There’s a lot going on here. The sea note stands out the most. Then I get lots of woods. Sandalwood seems the most prominent. An evergreen sappy freshness is next; citrus, musk and amber. Maybe a floral here and there. KPH is fresh and salty with a rubber/wet wood feel. Usually aquatic type scents are headache inducing for me but this one is very well done.
Sillage and projection are about average. Lasts for twelve plus hours on my skin and I smell it on clothes days later. A warm weather scent that’s good for most occasions except date night. Not particularly sexy. “Masculine”, more youthful; I wouldn’t mind smelling this on a lady. Bottle is cool, sprayer works well and it’s pretty affordable. This is a summer day. Flip flops, swim trunks, tank top, sun glasses. Hot wind blows off the gulf over rocks, drift wood and seaweed; I wade into the surf up to my knees; a crab pinches my foot. Buy it!

In memoriam Kenzo Pour Homme (1991)
It was fantastic, a real legend, one of the most unique fragrance. I bought it again today (blind buy). Astonishing! Not the same scent. Very disappointing! It has nothing to do with original version. Kenzo Pour Homme (1991) and Kenzo Homme (2013 or 2015) completely different scent!!! Unfortunately…

You can love it or hate it – but there’s nothing like KpH.
I know it from my (more than 20 years) experience that different people perceive this frag in very different ways – but it’s Unique.
    Drydown is die for !

I don’t love it, I don’t hate it. Honestly for as many times the term “masterpiece” has been used in reviews I expected something better. Well not “better,” obviously it’s well loved, just not for me. It’s so different from any other aquatic I’ve tried, so maybe try to get your hands on a sample first if you’re just curious because you love other aquatics.
Certainly has a strong opening, pretty woody, obviously I expected this, I guess I just didn’t know what to expect, haha. Much respect for this fragrance for being different, my disappointment is my own fault.

This is a review for the kenzo homme version. As an avid fragrance collector thought I needed to sample this juice as people rave about it! What I wasn’t expecting was the cheap synthetic smell that’s not too dissimilar to window cleaning fluid, it lacked depth and was piercing on the nose, I actually felt embarrassed to be wearing it. I get what this was meant to be and I appreciate that it’s been reformulated but this just smelt cheap. Sorry kenzo.

    3 out of 5

Oh wow what have we here? An “aquatic” with heart and soul? A marine based scent that isn’t too off putting? Kenzo pour Homme is an early 90s gem that hasn’t lost its place on the shelves. And what a nightmare it is to describe, which shouldn’t be surprising given its lengthy and diverse list of notes. First let’s tackle the aforementioned aquatic nature of Kenzo ph. It’s deep and it’s nautical, but thankfully not tangled up in too much seaweed. This invokes a moment in the deep blue sea, most likely at night. A kelp forest like almost underwater fougere influence is present but you obviously can’t smell underwater unless drowning is your thing, hence the uniqueness and difficulty of describing this scent. Though I suppose I can just compare it to some kind of heavy Hokkaido sea breeze and call it a day. One if not the most realistically oceanic scents of all time. There’s also a wet vinyl note which is probably why I feel like I’m out on a boat when I wear this.
Despite mixed reviews I don’t think this baby is eccentric enough to scare too many away. Kenzo ph is pleasant so no need to tread lightly. I like it because it’s classy yet entirely unpretentious. It’s not trying to be sexy or to prove anything. It’s an “oh that’s nice” fragrance followed by a subtle smile. Bonus points for the katana handle like bottle. Captain Nemo’s signature scent.

  43. :

    4 out of 5

    @Cerulean
There was at least one more reformulation. Around 2013-2014. I unfortunately bought a bottle, and it was terrible. Absolutely unwearable. It was probably quickly reformulated again. I recently bought a bottle of current formulation and it was great as it used to be. In my opinion KPH was never remarkably changed smell-wise. It was always the same great fragrance except for the one unfortunate reformulation that was corrected quickly. However longevity and projection is now weaker, not unacceptably but still.
Now a bit of my input; I always had and always will big respect for KPH. The intelligence of this composition is undeniable. It just connects green vegetal world with wood and oceanic, salty feel. It’s authentic, rich and unique. There is nothing you could replace it with. There’s only couple of fragrances that got this level of olfactory mastery.

Good to see you on here Marc. This is one I just discovered/put off my radar for many, many, many years. Had other aquatics so figured, “Why do I need another of the same ole, same ole watery based frag?” However imo, this is unique enough, and one you do not need to pass up. Very good! I know there’s something special when I keep wanting to sniff my wrist to get that goodness :-). To be over 20 years old, it still smells relevant/modern. Great for work/the office/everyday. Signature scent worthy. Still feeling this one out, but I am definitely enjoying it. As others have said, the smell matches the color/theme of the bottle: the deep blue sea. Go watch Marc’s review because he pretty much sums it all up. Built for the spring/summer but a solid, versatile, all occasion/season choice, especially for the price.

I keep coming back to this scent. The drydown and base is what I like most. This Kenzo impressed me a lot when I first bought it but quickly I left it alone. The opening started to disturb me sometimes (that plastic note as mentioned, like the smell inside a wet and used styrofam box) and I´m sure I smelled it on a lady passing by, and didn’t like the feel, as it wasn’t masculine enough just because a woman was wearing. I did a lot of tests in the past: spray and walk through, spray on wet wrists and let then dry, etc. But here again I´m with it, after five bottles or so, waiting for the combo with a 100ml bottle plus an after-shave cream and a blue wallet. Sometimes when I walked inside the office and got its own sillage coming from me, I used to get dubious about its smell, and I think because reading reviews here and there put some words in my subconscious as a warning. All that belonging to the past, I can easily say it’s one of my favourites scents, and I just knew it around 2009, almost 20 years after its release. Nothing feels old fashioned, just different, and despise those pos-conceptions, I liked it since first snif. What rests in the end which I like and gives me a feel of something connected to the beach (I know this “olfatory voyage” has to do with one’s imagination) is the best part. Longevity is pretty good. Hot or cold weather? I´m not sure, but in any case I prefer it to be dry. Warm and dry weather, it seens to be the best ocasion. Till today is my number one of the classified as “aquatic”.

Kenzo’s First Male Fragrance Release and what an entry level fragrance they released! Kenzo is keeping the name of KPH alive with multiple flankers in recent years and hopefully the new generation discovers this scent.
Nose behind this is Christian Mathieu and this shall be his best release even thought his resume is fairly bare.
The idea behind KPH was to build a fragrance around the idea of dark blue/green vegetal aspect and the marine world. The blue bamboo as seen on the original bottle portrays this idea.
Upon smelling KPH it transports me to the deep edge of the sea right away, there was no winding down period here, just delve in. You get hit with many facets including some citruses, aquatic notes, woods and florals. KPH shows depth that many aquatics lack in this modern male perfumery world. This isn’t your stereotypical aquatic, it’s dark blue with a good dose of green. You aren’t just on a boat and the sea is around you, you are scuba diving deep down in the water, it’s not crystal clear anymore, it’s dark blue… you smell vegetation around you.
I smelt a plastic note here that is a little different (some say rubber) , it reminds me (going with the aquatic theme here) of the plastic key holders they give you for your keys to your boat so you don’t lose your keys in the water. I love the work of the sage and pine in this scent. The sage gave KPH an edge almost peppery, the pine is not strong however resonates throughout the scent.
Contrary to reviews on here I get quite a bit of florals like many 90’s counterparts utilized (ADG with jasmine) and it works with the overall theme here in KPH.
Overall KPH is a true warrior in the early 90’s aquatic years. There’s not too many survivors that are still doing well to this day. Kenzo Pour Homme made it’s mark on the fragrance industry and it truly made a mark with me during my testing for my review on youtube. My appreciation for this scent has gone up ten fold because of testing.
Kenzo Pour Homme can easily be a signature scent for anyone, easy to throw on, can be great for someone just starting out since I see it’s sold for cheap online or a true veteran fragrance head since it has some very interesting parts to it. The development is quite linear however it’s an easy transition and flawless delivery by the perfumer. It’s work appropriate and on me it was not a huge compliment getter.

J’adore cette parfume sur mon marri. I absolutely love this cologne on my husband. he can wear it or just spray it around the room and I swoon. Lovely scent without too much of the woodsy, supposed masculine, notes that make me sick.

Smells like a fresh scent mixed with a vinyl pool float… not in a bad way lol. That weird vinyl smell coupled with an aquatic salty smell makes me feel like I’m lounging by a pool all day… and by all day I mean aaaaallll day…lasts forever.

I prefer woody aromas to the sweet and this, sometimes, leads me to the male perfumes.
This perfume should be considered unisex as some men also like to slightly fruity floral aromas. I must explain that I have constant headaches which makes me extremely sensitive to strong smells and too much sweets, but I love a good smell!
This Kenzo reminded me of watermelon so I bought and became a fan. I think they did a good mix of aromas and in the end prevailed carnation, musk and sandalwood. A drop in each pulse in the morning made me already lively and awake, ready to face the most willing day. It is an elegant perfume, young and brings me good memories of the period I lived in Japan.

My husband had this one in 1996…he fell in love then and he still is.
This fragrance lasts the whole day on his skin.
I don’t like it that much …but I have to admit that this an excellent men fragrance.

Is the current version reformulated? I want to buy one but the last time i snuff the juice was in 2002 and it was very strange note to me (in the positive way). I can not find it in any store in my town and i’m afraid that i’ll not be able to get the note like it used tobe if it is really reformulated, as i can only buy it online.

    MORE!
I’ve sat on this one for way too long. On the one hand I love it, but its performance on me can be so completely overwhelming that it would often become a scrubber. When applied heavily it becomes generic and a little bit… tacky.
I wanted to give this another try, though, and accidentally ended up applying the tiniest amount as the nozzle overshot my wrist. The drops which did hit my skin are FINALLY giving me what I’ve been waiting for.
The best analogy I have for its superior performance when lightly applied is that of painting wood. If you layer it on too heavy, yes, you get a smooth appearance, which may as well be plastic rather than wood. But when a lighter coat is applied you can see the detail in the wood. You can follow the movement of the woodgrain. From a distance you see its colours, but up close nuance is revealed.
I’m so thrilled to finally be able to give this a thumbs up. Of course, my light-handed applications likely mean my bottle will last me for the next 90 years. 😉

    ★★★★★
It took me a while to appreciate what Kenzo Pour Homme has to offer. After multiple trials in different weather and temperature conditions I have finally decided to give it a 5 star rating.
In 1991, when aquatics had already started to morph into a trend, the house of Kenzo offered a fragrance that was both trendy and different from everything that was advertised to offer a masculine, fresh and sporty character.
The herbal and woody character blended with calone evoke an unusual abstract feeling of the following occasions:
    -A forest after the rain
    -A lacustrine spray of water
    -A post-pool sporty vibe
    -A scent of wet wood
All those images come to my head when I smell this blend, and I am starting to realise that the dry woody character of the base notes in correlation with the florals of the heart successfully produce the wet character
