Description
“Rugged coastlines entertain those wishing to explore the allure of the Pacific open water while posh boutiques enchant consumers with the glamor of human creation. This fragrance captures the essence of amarettos consumed at boardwalk cafés while notes of cacao and tonka bean convey the warmth of the San Diego sunset. A most delectable note of Mexican vanilla extract entices the wearer like the temptation of extending a holiday spent in picturesque locations. Notes of essential patchouli oil and white musk envelop the composition with the ethos of the unhurried. Sparkling pink pepper resemble the light refracted off the purest of jewels: a nod to the namesake of this seaside town. This is La Jolla.” – a note from the brand.
La Jolla was launched in 2017. The nose behind this fragrance is Mahsam Raza.

I sampled one spray on my arm a couple nights ago, and could still smell it when I woke up! I love this fragrance! Very rich, warm, and cozy. I live in a pretty cold climate, and this type of fragrance is perfect for cool spring, and falls nights, and anytime during winter. I’m going to be rocking this quite a bit!

I’m happy to finally be sampling one of the perfumes from this new line, Eighteen Fifty Parfums. The framing of La Jolla as a “sweet tobacco” scent certainly caught my eye, as I tend to love this subgenre, from fragrances to Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille to Burberry London.
La Jolla most reminds me of Mugler A*Men Pure Havane and Wiseguys Vegas Cologne, and while I usually refrain from making comparisons to other fragrances as a starting point, I feel it’s helpful to explain since Pure Havane in particular is a very popular fragrance.
La Jolla isn’t as borderline cloyingly sweet as Pure Havane or Vegas Cologne, and it lacks the pseudo-cherry note that is generally assigned to both. It’s a bit more subtle, with the tobacco and spicy notes, specifically pepper, front-and-center rather than the sweeter notes, of which there are some, but these don’t overwhelm over cast aside the tobacco and pepper.
Vanilla adds a signature sweetness and the tonka/almond combination provides a certain powdery vibe.
The result is something a little subtler and more restrained that Pure Havane, not in terms of performance, which is still quite good, but in terms of character. La Jolla is, I dare say, a bit more sophisticated while still offering the familiarity and comfort. I’m very impressed with it and want to try my decant some more. At $85 for 50ml, it’s reasonably-priced and it makes me even more eager to try the rest of the fragrances in this new line out of Southern California.

The list of notes for La Jolla includes several of my favorites so I was tickled pink when told I’d won a bottle. Before the bottle arrived I read Bbjr’s and Jitterbug Perfume Lover’s reviews and was thoroughly convinced I’d fall head over heels in love. Alas, my experience was very different from theirs – I sure don’t smell what they smell.
I’m truly grateful for the gift but I’ve struggled mightily for days about how to describe my experience in terms both descriptive and honest without sounding mean. I’d pretty much decided to heed my mama’s advice and say nothing because I couldn’t think of anything nice to say. But I just now read Roge’s review and decided that what I have to say will be quite mild in comparison. So, here goes.
I expected something truly marvelous. What I have instead is what would be a nice air freshener if I were preparing a guest room for somebody’s grandpa who smokes a pipe and uses a lot of mentholated muscle linament and I wanted to be sure he’d really feel at home.
Yup, all I perceive is “pipe tobacco, pipe tobacco, pipe tobacco, Ben Gay ointment.” The pipe tobacco does have a honey aspect but it’s overwhelmed by the bitter, ashy smell of an old, heavily used pipe and that weird, greasy linament odor.
If Yankee Candle’s test lab had come up with an air freshener fragrance like this I sincerely doubt it would have made it to market.
I’m sorry but I honestly cannot come up with a way to put a positive spin on my experience of La Jolla. Most definitely a try-before-you-buy fragrance.

I was gonna approach this review euphemistically due to the fact that I was one of 5 winners to receive an 1850 bottle but my inner Roge’ wouldn’t allow me to be reticent. There’s a big responsibility when naming a fragrance after a city especially when the city is La Jolla. How does one capture Torrey Pines and affluence in a bottle? For starters, add palm trees…just kidding! Actually, you know what??….Maybe I’m not kidding. Something should have been added due to the dearth of notes in this bottle. Scarcity isn’t the only issue. This suffers from a big dosage of “cheap.” 14 ingredients and only 5 were detectable; that’s the bad news. The good news is that 5 were only detectable. Was the black amber extracted from the whale while it was living!? What was that!?!? Holy top note Batman!! Can you say bilious? When I smell this, I get inspired to clean my stove. This smells like some sort of disinfecting towelette made with honey. This is a criminal chemically candied crop disguised as a seaside city. As it pertains to driving force, the tobacco note manages to take the wheel. This wheel didn’t just fall off, it flew toward the stands! This fragrance should be animistic not animalic. I shouldn’t be able to break La Jolla down like a “normal fragrance.” The fragrant exteriority or should i say essence should humble me not be met with truculence. Quick question to the perfumer: Are my eyes suppose to pinwheel when smelling this fragrance? A risible representation of the 858. Forget the Tide Pod challenge, do the 1850 La Jolla challenge! Hopefully this evaluation will be the epoch to change 1850 for the better.
