Description

Hermes fragrance collection that started with the original edition Jour d’Hermes in 2013 is a creation of perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena who wanted to embrace and express flowers as the essence of femininity. After the original, Jour d`Hermes Absolu edition was presented in 2014.

The new fragrance of the collection is Jour d’Hermes Gardenia, scheduled for spring 2015. Jour d’Hermes Gardenia is described as a bouquet of gardenias that convey scents of tuberose, rose and jasmine.

It is available as 50 and 85 ml Eau de Parfum in a bottle of original design with light green liquid.

All i smell is grapefruit and gardenia. It smells a bit soapy and dated, but does not stinks like the original. It is also lighter.
I was expecting to like it, because i love white flowers and i have nothing against citrus ( except for grapefruit) , but it is too much like the original for me to like it.

True it is refreshing scent, cuz tuberose is gentle here. Flowers are mild here. Unique anf fresh in a green way.
No harshness just develops in a creamy way.

    smells refreshing and unique!
I notice several other perfumes that almost smell exactly like Gardenia, but this one has a note that is truly unique that no other brands can duplicate.

wanted to like this, fresh opening but then it turned sharpish sour & bitter lime peel sort of smell on my skin, unfortunately this is not for me.

Very disappointing for me because I have the original Jour and I quite like it, and I adore gardenia as a scent, but oh my when I sprayed some of this on my skin all I could smell was a very strong sour citrus akin to a cleaning product. What a shame! I couldn’t detect gardenia at all. 🙁

Ok today I’m gonna be gushing, as usual, about a sunny tropical floral with a french twist.
This perfume has one of the most beautiful shimmering top notes ever: it has that tart natural floral of the original Jour d’Hermes with generous swabs of gardenia and suntan-oil tiare all swirling in your face.
The drydown can’t help but pale a little in comparison, but it’s still lovely: a fresh tea-like white floral with a ripe fruitiness to it, like a gardenia mirage.
Something I’m starting to notice about my evolving taste in perfumes is that I like perfumes that stray towards the “medicinal”: this one for example has a kind of heady, tiger-balm twinge in it that kind of reminds me of (dare I say it?) Poison O_O
I snatched it up last year since I feared it would, as flankers do, disappear at a moment’s notice. Now summer is back, and I’m enjoying Jour d’Hermes Gardenia once again!

I really like this fragrance very modern gardenia does not smells like old lady or grand ma… substance matter. Better than hermes d’jour others similar looks. I am so glad that I got this because it was discontinued item in nordstorm no longer available.

I was so excited for its release, as I am so happy with their 2 predecessor. Tried twice, i found the composition is rather off. It has jour d hermes vein on initial blast, only to find the citrus seems didn’t pair well with gardenia on the following stage.
Oh well, maybe i need to try again someday..

I didn’t want to rush to review this beauty, but I must do it.
It starts with a citrus note provoking sharpness, but nothing intense or aggressive. On the contrary, it is an aroma that reminds me of the wet earth, freshly cut grass, and soon it disappears to give way to the white flowers.
Then I perceive the gardenia, beautiful, soft, making everything much more mellow. The sweetness enters with the tuberose, as it comes to stay and seize everything. JDHG continues with a bed of super creamy white flowers, almost milky, I do not know how to explain it in any other way. It becomes sweet, but not cloying, just cute. And at its base, the rose appears from time to time, giving it a fresh, romantic, and green touch.
Actually, I would not have named this fragrance “Gardenia”, but I understand why they did. It’s a nice, fresh and creamy representation of it; although tuberose takes the wheel.
Very good longevity and fixation. It has a soft sillage in me, but I love that. You have to get closer to discover its beauty.

Jour d’Hermes Gardenia is quite possibly the biggest crowd-pleaser from the Hermes range. It’s a refreshing white floral on my skin, even more polite than its predecessors Jour d’Hermes and Jour d’Hermes Absolu.
If you’re looking for a green, crisp white floral for Spring or Summer, definitely add this fragrance to your test list. It has an almost dew-kissed quality which I rather enjoy, but on the other hand it doesn’t have the dense, sultry white floral aspect which I loved in the original Jour d’Hermes.
The opening is where Jour d’Hermes Gardenia is at its most fresh, with an abundance of citrus accords followed by green, sparkling notes of gardenia, jasmine and rose. As the fragrance warms on the skin it becomes slightly muskier and creamier.
I would have liked Jour d’Hermes Gardenia a little better if it had more of a commanding presence. Sadly I find it a little too tame for my personal tastes. I much prefer other gardenia rich scents like Estee Lauder’s Tuberose Gardenia or Annick Goutal’s Gardenia Passion as they have more bite. However if delicate white florals are more your thing, Jour d’Hermes Gardenia is worth a sniff.

Personally I like this fragrance, one day this summer I had layered jour and jour gardenia together, I was only two hours wearing it to stroll around and shopping, I a high end clothing boutique (in France) the owner asked me what I was wearing as a perfume she was so excited about it and said ” please stay I love your smell so much”, after that I went for an apero in a brasserie, there the waitress also asked what I was wearing, she loved it also so much. A month later back in my home country I wore jour gardenia alone and I went to visit a young woman, she was also so in love with the scent om me, so much that I gave her my bottle ( she is family related and very stylish )… Now I Feel a bit sorry, so I am gonna buy it again. I don’t know but on me it s a very good lasting scent according others….and myself

There was this medicinal note that wants me to crumple the paper strip and throw it to them. Its smells like a cough syrup and ammonia. Its so fking offensive! So didnt crumple it in put it at my office desk and ignored it for 2 days. Then there is something that giving me this amazing whiffs on my nose its making my heart pound and suddenly i realized its the tester strip i left beside my computer desk. Omg it so unique! Hermes perfumes is between designer scents and niche scents. Give them time you will love them. They are also so simple. Hermes only consist of 1-5 notes. Designers consist of 1-15. Mostle niche fragrance 3. 1 for top 1 for heart and 1 for base. But i dont recommend buying it if you dont like strong unusual common floral notes.

I’m still surprised that I ended up not liking this perfume. I have and greatly enjoy Jour d’Hermes and gardenia is a favorite note, so this should have been a no-brainer love…but it’s not. Maybe it’s because I already own Jour d’Hermes, but when I wear this I feel like I’m wearing Jour with a spritz of some sort of gardenia perfume on top–the two just never blend into one perfume to my nose. However, the gardenia in this is very pretty and many people love this perfume, so if you like gardenia, you might want to check this one out.

It is full of white flowers, crowd friendly. It goes together with a white sleeveless dress and strip sandals. It smells optimistic, like a long awaited vacation.
I tested it on a hot summer day and I found it lovely. I sensed more tuberose than gardenia, which is fine for me.
Its longevity cannot be compared to the “original” Jour d’Hermes as it stayed with me “only” for some four hours before I reapplied it, which I did gladly.
    Overall assessment: 8/10

  17. :

Fresh, does well in the heat. It opens very bitter but quickly rounds out to nice white florals. A classy white floral Something in this scent reminds me of summers at a tropical themed waterpark. Though not listed, several hours of wear leaves me with vanilla amber reminiscent of the eau de Merveilles line.

Gardenia soliflore and crashed green parts with a citrus hint. I can actually imagine the fine velvety white petals while smelling this. Spring summer day scent. Elegant and non-offensive. Sillage is an arm length for about 1,5-3 hours and then it becomes a skin scent. I like it,

Light and green, nobel smell, but not very lasting unfortunately and close to skin.

A Hermes I don’t like. I’m honestly shocked. This was a very bitter, very green fragrance at the start. Very challenging. Then it dried down to Marc Jacobs, but fainter. I found this at TJ Maxx and I’m glad I didn’t pay full price for it.

  21. :

Last time I tested this out it smelled something like wet earth on me. However, not in a good way, more like humid compost. I’ll probably test it out again, just because I love Jour d’Hermes, the original, so much.

Even though it doesn’t smell at all like Carven La Griffe, this Jour d’Hermes gardenia flanker evoked memories of the classic upon initial spritz–no doubt because it opens so very green! Then the flowers descend in billows as though dropped from the clouds. I like it.

Shockingly this turned up at T.J. Maxx (in the USA. T.J. Maxx is a low end discount store that only stocks “C” list fragrances like Elizabeth Arden and Juicy Couture and Elizabeth Taylor, etc.)
So I see THIS Hermes Gardenia on the rack and was like !!!! So I bought it. I love Hermes and I love Gardenia.
There is enough complexity and fun in this to keep it interesting; it almost feels like a HIGH END version of Elizabeth Taylor’s Gardenia (!).
It opens up harsh; a real Gardenia has a “stink” to it, you know?
After the harshness dies out–the playfulness begins……..this is a beautiful fragrance a la Hermes 24 Fauborg with Gardenia as the star.
The playful part will die down after 20 minutes or so and you will be left with a lovely skin scent for a few hours.
Of course I wish the longevity was better but I caught a whiff of this coming off me when I walked down the street and it was amazing.
This last longer on clothes than skin (naturally) and I suspect that it will get stronger the more I let it “sit around” or get down to 1/4 of a bottle.
Happy with my purchase and I see it may even be discontinued????

Jour d’Hermes Gardenia by Hermes opens with a promising lactonic gardenia-type white floral and some aldehydes. The jasmine note is prominent. The creamy gardenia accord is tempered by a soapiness; this gardenia is definitely prim and proper with maybe a touch of animalic orange blossom, but nothing that pushes the composition away from the innocent and fresh territory. It definitely smells good, but turns a bit generic and mushy in the dry down. I think Estee Lauder has better gardenia offerings—Tuberose Gardenia offers a gorgeous, realistic gardenia and Beyond Paradise offers a creamy, soapy, abstract gardenia.
    3/5

  25. :

This composition does not work for me. There is something vaguely off about it, I find, like the citruses clash with the florals. Almost bitter on my skin. Your mileage may vary.

  26. :

    5 out of 5

Very strange how this morphed on my skin.
It started by smelling like a creamy latte, i don’t understand how but it really did.
That soon disappeared and was followed by a disappointingly old potpourri smell.
This is what the scent mostly smelt like.
Now it has been 2 hours and this has dried down to a smell that i can only describe as, when the sand meets the dirt, shrubbery and trees. With a touch of citrus.

  27. :

Clean and elegant. I love wearing it.

  28. :

    3 out of 5

it’s a fresh soft floral perfume. when i smell it i feel relaxed! i think it be proper for quiet ladies. gardenia note has a high quality.

  29. :

    3 out of 5

It’s a fragil gardenia. Mingles with a light citrus. I find it lovely if used with caution, that said, if over sprayed this perfume can turn into a classic, vintage fragrance (and not in a good way, if you get my drift).
It has a slight powdery note, perhaps the rose, that clashes with the purity of the gardenia.
The bottle is to die for. But with the fragrance I’m wrestling, it’s a yes, no, yes,no,no, Yes, maybe. Some note in the middle transforms the light, airy scent into an outdated, sort of floral/medicinal type of fragrance. For sure this is not a modern take on Gardenia.

It opens bitter with the scent of natural gardenia and some tuberose,as green, fresh and bitterish as natural flower petals..I disliked the opening part since I dislike bitter, green scents, but after some minutes bitterness fades and it settles to a soft, silky gardenia-tuberose combo, very pure and likable,in case you like these white florals ofcourse,it’s not sweet, not sharp, not too much indolic and too much creamy, not also dirty and animalic..it’s clean and simple,I don’t find it old fashioned type at all but if you feel like all gardenia tuberose fragrances are old ladyish don’t bother try this, for me this is as young as freshly cut flowers
This is not my type but if I was a gardenia tuberose lover this would be one of my top choices, since there is nothing overdone here, longevity and sillage both are very good on my skin, not exploding like a bomb but very noticeable even after couple of hours and just two sprays
I believe it can make a great bride perfume for a gardenia lover since it’s pure, innocently clean and has tuberose’s luxurious glory at the same time,it can also be unisex for men who love whiteflorals since it’s not sweet and has a green vibe
    Highly recommended to gardenia-tuberose lovers
    ❤❤❤

This is such a beautiful Mediterranean Night bottled as perfume. Smells so good. Mostly gardenia as the name suggest. I imagine an elegant lady wearing all white and hermes jour gardenia as she is going out somehere in harbour. Lovely

I don’t really like it… I thought I’ll love gardenia, but turns out, it smells like old lady perfume. Not what I expected.
Plus, the dry-down is quite artificial.

This is just a general comment for those experiencing the same: I usually love Ellena scents; however, they almost always bother me, headache, etc. I think I’ve narrowed it down to the aquatic, watery accord that are in most of his perfumes. I truly wish he would make some gorgeous scents without this note, so we all could enjoy them.

  36. :

My first impression of this perfume is ‘Wow.’
It is one h*ll of a beautiful perfume, I must say.
Rich and succulent combination of gardenia and tuberose.
Unfortunately, it has a tiny nagging scent, I can’t quite pinpoint that bothered me.
Performs much better on a rainy day than sunny day. On a rainy day, the scent is much more tamed and luxurious.
I sprayed at the back of my neck, and was able to enjoy the scent all day long.
    Great longevity and sillage.
For hot weather, I think it could be a bit suffocating and overpowering. Nevertheless, overall, fantastic scent.

Oh my!!! This is one of the best Gardenia I ever smelled! It’s stunning. Jean-Claude Ellena managed to make Gardenia smell so modern. It’s elegant yet sexy. Perfect weddings fragrance, perfect for summer evenings.

  38. :

    5 out of 5

A very nice gardenia scent, but a bit too sharp and heady – must be the jasmine and tuberose. Starts fresh, then thickens and becomes sweeter, and finally evens out into a really nice gardenia smell, but alas, gives me a bit of a headache. One of those white florals…

  39. :

    3 out of 5

I love this fragrance so much! Too bad it is limited edition. I use it very sparingly as it will break my heart to see this beautiful scent run out.
This fragrance brings forth dewy gardenia buds, clean-cut tuberose, and voluptuous roses surrounded by crisp morning air and greenery. It is intoxicatingly beautiful, but it still has a masculine edge, making it unisex.
    Longevity: 10/10
    Silage:10/10
    Packaging: 10/10, DIVINE
Price: 10/10, better than most gardenia fragrances launched by niche houses
** PS: if you love carnal flower, you will definitely like this one!
Get one before it runs out!!!

  40. :

    5 out of 5

Intoxicating gardenia, voluptuous roses, and refined jasmine make for a rich bouquet – a rare blend that you can’t reduce to one word. Each flower creates different facets which are likely to surprise you during the day.
Indeed, as often when you smell Hermès perfumes, it’s difficult to judge on a first impression, for their fragrances beautifully evolve into complex and addictive scents. This changeability makes them very dear to me. I just cannot be bored by them – it seems like I’m always discovering them for the first time. I guess that it’s enhanced by the unpredictable nature of the gardenia note.
Jour Gardénia could have been too “clean” because of the white flower’s bouquet (associated with shampoo in my mind), yet it turns into a radiant and creamy texture that is both elegant and refreshing.

I just smelled Hermes Gardenia for the first time yesterday after a saleswoman at David Jones suggested it, and WOW. I am a sucker for Tuberose, which really comes through in this perfume, with the creamy gardenia note just underneath to make a sophisticated floral. I also LOVE white florals, but what I love about this perfume in particular is that there’s an edge to it that other florals lack- it’s that animalic aspect to it that makes me want to keep smelling it. It reminds me of Versace Blonde which was unfortunately discontinued. Hermes Gardenia is now at the top of my list for perfumes I want to buy. Absolutely lovely!

  42. :

    5 out of 5

I don’t think the linear scent is this perfume’s fault. Gardenia by Hermes is trying to present the lovers of gardenia its natural, pure, hearable, and prominent smell of it.
I believe that other components in the background are here to keep this linear scent modern. Excellent job, Hermes.

  43. :

  44. :

    4 out of 5

What a pitty it’s only a limited edition! It is a fresh floral-green composition, slightly sour at the begining but just a minute after that develops into an airy and ethereal, fairylike gentle scent.
This is an ideal summer fragrance, gardenia is not too sweet nor ‘cheesy’ here, it is very light, almost transparent, with the slightest creamy warmth from ylang-ylang, rose, jasmine and tuberose and very transparent vanilla, iris and white musks in the dry-down. The impression is sunny, fresh, summer-like, like a summer-wind kissing your skin.
Pretty longlasting on my skin with a decent sillage.
    Notes by Osmoz:
Top Notes: Galbanum, Rhubarb, Aldehyde Notes, Sea Note
Heart Notes: Rose, Tuberose, Ylang-Ylang, Hedione, Gardenia
Base Notes: White Musks, Vanilla Pod, Iris Absolu.

I got this for testing. I wasn’t so amazed and found it too strong and too mature, when I sprayed it on the paper. Yet it’s a quite pretty flower smell. Today I sprayed it on my wrist and found it quite nice at the first moment. Then it started to change to a very very flowery citrus smell for me, which smells exactly like those parfum you can smell in the lavatories in better department stores… Such a pity because I really would like to like it.

  46. :

    5 out of 5

After testing it at least 5 times on different occasions and weathers this one is now on my wish list. On my skin it’s a lovely creamy green gardenia, fresh and cheerful yet elegant at the same time, pretty versatile in my opinion. Worked best on warm sunny days. considering it is an edp the longevity and silage are not the best, it becomes a skin scent on me after 4-5 hours, however if I spray it into my hair it lasts way longer. I’m going to get a body lotion from the Jour line which hopefully helps!

  47. :

I tried the scent lately. I have to admit in advance that I am not a fan of de jour d’Hermes it somehow bores me. I love flowery scents sometimes also soliflores and I love gardenia. So, I thought I give it a try.
My experience with this was not good. I was overwhelmed by loud screeming gardenia scent, however, not a nice one, but a sour scent almost like rotten flowers. But I am a patient person when it comes to perfumes, so I waited some hours. After some 2 hours the sourness slightly disappeared but also the gardenia. What was left was the original jour d’Hermès and this was not what I expected.
To me personally a disappointment across the line. It may work on others, not on me, I prefer my Annick Goutal Gardenia Passion it is a more honest Gardenia combination for me.

  48. :

    4 out of 5

My first reaction when I sprayed this was “Oh my god I want it NOW!” Not a safe scent if you ask me, but a delicious one that made me want to devour my own wrist.
Too linear indeed, which makes it boring after a while, but if you do get to smell it, just take your sweet time to really savour it.

  49. :

    3 out of 5

Very nice gardenia without the mushroom/bleu cheese elements found in EL Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia. Also has a soapy/creamy note. Not damning w/faint praise either; if it is soapy, it’s the nicest soap ever. I think I also got a very very light hint of musk at the end. Will have to test some more before I decide if I want to commit to a bottle. Oh, and like the rest of the Jour d’Hermes family, it smells of grapefruit only this time it’s barely there thank goodness.

  50. :

    5 out of 5

This is quite nice. Jour D’hermes Gardenia is as innocent and pure as Gardenia can be. It’s clear, fresh and harmonious with focus on gardenia.
That’s said, Jour d’Hermes absolu is still my favorite of the 3 jour perfumes. However, Gardenia is a very charming new addition and worthy of being an Hermes! Excellent Job.

  51. :

    5 out of 5

I’m not a gardenia fan, but I find this one very beautiful!
It has that classy-but-always-modern Hermès vibe that makes it very special.
I have a small sample of this and I trully enjoy it!

  52. :

    5 out of 5

At the first spritz, tt started out a little ‘fatty’ — it actually smelled like a nice suntan oil w/ warm sand…A few moments later, it smells like a harmonious blend of tuberose [a member of the agave plant], gardenia [a member of the coffee plant], jasmine [kin to the olive plant] with a touch of fresh, unsweetened rose…
The bonus is that this fragrance doesn’t seem to be taking a turn towards becoming cloying or indolic because of the jasmine…
As for it comparing to other gardenia fragrances, my memory isn’t jumping to any conclusions right now…I think this one is bottle worthy because even though it’s linear, it’s quite sumptuous…

  53. :

    3 out of 5

Sprayed myself, took a shower and it was still on me quite prominently. I find it lasts for me, but I don’t like the scent, not my type: too linear and safe. Smells nice…but just…”nice”.

  54. :

    3 out of 5

To me this is a very nice, well made soliflore – a beautiful gardenia flower blooming in the morning, before it becomes too hot and the scent becomes cloying.
Very feminine, elegant and probably safe for any occasion.
I would keep it for daytime use, in summer, when sultry oriental fragrances are “too much”.
I does not seem to stay for very long, but it can be applied again as it is so gentle and inoffensive.

  55. :

Tried today, I’m speechless: this is stunning!
A fresh tuberose-gardenia combo, it reminds me a bit of another tuberose masterpiece: Carnal Flower, due to the green undertone.
I think tuberose is more prominent than gardenia here.
    Absolutely feminine and sophisticated.
    LOVE!

  56. :

Maybe my problem with this scent is that I had huge expectations. How couldn’t I being a tuberose and gardenia fan, an Ellena’s work admired and a loyal Hermes perfumes client?
This is just not matching my taste, it isn’t offending or bad, only not interesting enough for me. Too cool, too formal, too transparent, too conventional in contemporary terms. The surprise was for me the lack of surprise, I guess.
Good news: I’ll be saving some money 🙂

  57. :

    4 out of 5

A strong white floral for sure. Tuberose gives it rather sharp tone and gardenia is not creamy and nice, like in many other perfumes. I also sense it as green. I guess it’s a little too green and a little too white floral for my taste.

  58. :

    4 out of 5

I am obsessed about Gardenia at the moment. Have pretty much sniffed out all the classics and thought I have finally found my holy grail in Bond 9 or Estee Lauder Private Collection, then this fresh new contender comes along and turns my world upside down yet again!
It is truly beautiful, VERY feminine and just so delicately fresh. FRESH and GREEN is the word. This is not the rich, dense and heavy (some might say deafening or cloying) type of gardenia (usually heavy on the tuberose) but this one here is rather a wet and cool morning Gardenia, emphasizing the crisp green notes, perhaps of a bud that is just about to open?
In its cold manner it actually reminds me a bit of AMOUAGE “Lyric” that is a similarly cold and green morning rose.
Un Jour Gardenia is a true gem of a flanker (sometimes, but very rarely) that in my opinion outperforms the original.
Not a reference Gardenia but a fresh, clean, cool (thus ideal for the summer months) type of ‘Abstract Gardenia’ that is a true marvel in this genre of modern florals.
Near masterpiece of Monsieur Ellena. If only there was more development and longevity but it is truly BEAUTIFUL.
9/10. New modern Gardenia Classic. Very unisex, yet feminine enough for a wedding on a hot day. Magnifique!
