This has been my most consistently stocked fragrance for nearly 2 decade’s, thanks to my mother, who loves YSL and bought me this repeatedly as a gift.
(More than I could keep up with)
I really came to appreciate its light spicy freshness, for a scent that had clocked some year’s, with out of trend touches, via Moss and a fougere like bouquet.
However it was aimed for my age demographic, only 15 years earlier.
Now, over the years, my vintage bottles have sadly turned, the citrus is off.
But I now appreciate similar scents of the era and love 80s aromatic/fougeres.
Jazz opened my nostrils to complexity, comparative to its musical name sake.
I simply won’t take linear pop, that goes for fragrance.
I now love 80s classics such as:
Cerruti 1881, Drakkar noir, Lapidus pour homme and dared take on beasts like One man show.
Not in the same league of course, but I got over the moss like any young man should.
There are some incredible scents from yesteryear.
Jazz is a good metaphor for this.

Marvelous scent and although it’s from 1988, it’s by no means “dated.” Jazz has a very similar vibe to several fragrances I own with its green and woody composition (Tsar, Jaguar, and Safari. However, Jazz is not an exact clone of those fragrances, it’s more like it shares a little from each of them, particularly Safari. In fact, if I didn’t own vintage Safari, I would probably buy Jazz. I’d either hunt down and buy a vintage bottle (if I found a good deal), or invest in the newer La Collection release, which I understand does the vintage justice. All in all, Jazz is for collectors and lovers of vintage Green fragrances, such as myself such as Tsar, Jaguar, Monsieur, Bowling Green, and the King of Green, Polo original. Jazz fits in that group and holds its own very nicely.

A fresh, green, spicy perfume which reminds me of good times in the very early 90s…
The original bottle (plastic bottle resembling a piano key) is probably the best performing scent I have ever come across (as I remember it)
If you like fresh, green and spicy you will love this…(think green polo or Tsar).
I did not know it is discontinued… I bought a new bottle around 9 months ago…
    Dated?
    No!!!
… Just different to current fashionable scents…
For me it is still in my top 10 of all times!!!
    10/10
EDIT: 2 compliments received in garden party 22/05/2018
(Jazz was layered with Tsar and pineapple fragrance oil)

This is what James Bond smells like I guess. Very masculine fragrance. After the spray the spices are very noticeable, when the drydown comes the ingredients get milder and softer with quite prominent tobacco, lavender and cinnamon. It’s actually quite warm scent. The name fits to it – somehow I get the picture of a house jazz quartet in a downtown classic and a bit smokey jazz club.
    What a sexy masterpiece.
    To me 8/10.

what a nice fragrance! ysl jazz is a perfect mix of green, floral and spicy notes. everything is gentle, nothing screaming. jazz has a touch of retro style but it cant be considered an old-man parfume. it’s so clean and fresh, it reminds me a lot rive gauche, which is better for richness and performance, but jazz is so gourgeous, so well done…wow! for me it’s a great barbershop fragrance but it’s only my humble opinion. casual and elegant in the same time, inoffensive and perfect for overspraying. u cant ask more from jazz.it’s absolutely manly, for me it’s a safe blind buy. i have the long transparent bottle and i heard it’s discontinued but u can find “la collection” version on the market, but i cant tell u the differences between them. however the version i have it’s not so difficult to find in a store and the price is very affordable. seasons:all occasions: work, free time. not dates because it’s not the sexiest fragrance on the market. performance is average, projects good for the first 1-1,5 hour, then became silent. it lasts for 4 hours more or less. una fantastica scoperta!

update may 2018: i get the original version with the black and white bottle and i find for the 95% similar to mine. the older seems to be a little bit heavier and maybe more herbal but for me are basically the same scent.

This reminds me a lot fo Rive Gauche but with more spice and wood. But there is certainly that fougere undertone I love.

For many many moons this was my go to signature. I fell in love with it from the first moment I tried it back in 1989 and cried like an infant when they discontinued it. One of the best fragrances to come out of this house, and for that matter, the fragrance world in general.
I need to get my hands on the La Collection version, cause what I’m hearing is it’s identical, albeit a little weaker. I can live with the little weaker if it matches the scent. It will hurtle me back to 1989.

@The Phoenix – it is still available as “La Collection Jazz” – which is damn fine and almost identical to the original. It’s still unmistakably Jazz (see my review).

Finally happy to try this as I’ve heard much about it, and YSL Jazz harkens back to the both the power fragrance era and the end of the era during which fougeres were prominent, as it seems to be both a bit of a fougere as well as a heavier spicier winter order.
I definitely get more “spicy” than “fresh” as I smell Jazz, but it’s indubitably a bit of both. However, the lavender, from the opening through much of the dry down, remains a prominent accord that makes it lean toward fougere. However, the spicy elements of cinnamon, sandalwood, cedar, leather, tobacco, and most notably, oakmoss, take over in the dry down and give Jazz a heavier character than a “true” fougere, perhaps.
I’m not in love with Jazz specifically but I’m fond of the men’s fragrances of the era, as many like this are masculine and strong and harken back to a time now 30 years removed.
As with many vintage 1980s, the performance is just fine, as it projects and lasts plenty.

Jazzy Jeff By Yves Saint Laurent
This is one of my favorites of the late 80’s. In fact it smelled more like the early 90’s to me. It takes me back to the Manhattan jazz clubs & Greenwich Village nightclubs and stand up comedy clubs from the 1988 through 1992 period. Think Jerry Seinfeld in a deep purple suit or bold red suit with the mic and a brick wall behind him. For whatever reason this cologne is also making me think of Arsenio Hall. This fragrance is artistic & playful, not a snobbish cologne despite the Yves Saint Laurent label. It’s colors & music notes, and completely evocative of actual jazz music.
It’s a simple fresh and spicy scent. Jazz opens with a citrusy bergamot orange, but it’s not as citrusy as most typical openings. There is also a little alcohol. Before you can smell more oranges, it turns spicy with basil, cardamom (ginger) nutmeg, Artemisia, coriander & cinnamon. The spices surround a lavender scent. The lavender is almost but not quite like a lavender scented laundry detergent. It’s got a very clean fresh smell. The florals that join up with lavender include carnation, iris, jasmine and geranium. Normally these flowers are feminine & found in women’s perfumes but they are all based on a deep lavender, and a carnation that seems to be right behind it. So while it is floral, it’s more on the unisex floral side. There are just too many spices on the top & leathery musk & tobacco, smoky sandalwood and woodsy notes to make it into a woman’s perfume. This can be worn by the ladies who like smoky florals or spicy florals but for me this is a man’s aromatic fougere.
The leather notes and tobacco are quite masculine, and the woods linger for the longest time. The freshness is gone and the scent becomes dry and woodsy. The sandalwood is the key player in the final stage. Despite the number of notes, it smells linear, like it takes a faster time to develop into the dry portions to keep it from smelling too floral. But I find that it has a fair balance of florals & spices, and woodsy notes. It’s almost a chypre. Total day wear, but somewhat dressy, semi-formal. You can wear jazz with a dress shirt, no tie, a suit or that 90’s classic look of a dress shirt, no tie, blazer & JEANS. Blazer over jeans. This cologne doesn’t smell too formal or too serious. It has a casual air.
This fragrance I wore out on dates & to clubs. It smells expensive & far from a cheap cologne. The YSL stamp is definitely on it but it’s got a charming sophistication that would attract women who wear YSL perfumes. I will admit that YSL is better at composing women’s fragrances but this is probably the one man’s cologne – at least during it’s time – that seemed to be made with more thought & care.
    Good stuff!

    Fragrance Review For Jazz
    Yves Saint Laurent
    Top Notes
Nutmeg Artemisia Coriander Cinnamon Lavender Basil Anise Bergamot Cardamom
    Middle Notes
    Carnation Iris Jasmine Geranium
    Base Notes
Leather Sandalwood Tonka Amber Musk Oak Moss Cedar Tobacco
    AND ALL THAT JAZZ
Jazz by Yves Saint Laurent smells like a dimly lit jazz nightclub café without the booze or the caffeine smells, but with jus as much spiciness and smokiness like the scent of cigarette smoke that creates clouds in the air. It’s not 100 percent accurate to actual cigarette smoke clouds, thank God, but that’s the vision that played in my head while inhaling this fragrance. And I loved it. This is not as woodsy as I would like it to have been and it’s basically a man’s chypre. This is still such a very artistically formulated fragrance. The artistry in the notes and how they match up together and smoothly flow together while not being too similar to each other is what is meant by it’s moniker Jazz. Jazz is improvisational and sometimes it can be smooth and elegant like it has been rehearsed enough times to come off as perfect.
Jazz by YSL opens with Artemisia and coriander, so it smells a bit like the outdoors. It’s also spicy with basil and lavender. It’s more South of France than Greenwich Village, but that didn’t surprise me as this is a French cologne. The lavender note is also spicy and pastoral and the one floral note that always stands out in men’s colognes. This is also a fougere as it contains the lavender top note and later on the santal or sandalwood in the dry down/base notes. But unlike most fougeres, this is not as unisex. For me this is still very much targeting a male audience.
After the lavender fades, the floral notes of iris, carnation, jasmine and geranium appear, like faded showgirls that can’t really do much but do a bit of back-up dancing. They are feminine but not the stars of this men’s ensemble of jazz musicians. The jazz plays on and on while only the lavender, which is frankly a manly floral scent, as the big player.
The dry down comes off as woodsy. There’s sandalwood, cedar wood, oak moss, and lots of it. This is a chypre with woodsy notes to die for. There’s warm golden amber tones, and smoky tobacco leaves. The dry down is really the best part of the fragrance because it matches up with the imagery of a jazz nightclub. The woods, the tobacco, the warm night air.
This is a beautiful fragrance. Recommended Use: Evenings, Dinners, Dates, Parties, and of course Jazz Clubs. It does not match up with a suit or tuxedo but it can be worn with one. It’s more like a cologne to wear with semi-formal wear or business casual: shirts with no ties, blazers or jackets, leather jackets and dress shirts with pants/dark jeans, or blazer with jeans, nothing especially elegant, just a casual scent of cigarettes and jazz.

My Dad gave me a half-used bottle of the original vintage from the late 80s (The one with the piano key plastic shell.) I’d have to say this is the best fragrance I’ve ever smelled. Opens with a fresh blast of herbs, spices and florals, balanced with some semi-sweet citrus. Classy, masculine and earthy, this is what a true gentleman smells like, with nuances of leather and pipe tobacco. But, at the same time, it doesn’t smell like an old man – I think any age can probably pull this off. As people have said below, it does smell kind of ‘funky,’ but in the best way – it makes this a unique fragrance. As such, as much as I love it, I’d recommend you smell it before you buy, as it definitely doesn’t suit everyone. As for compliments, I got a few with this, but I also got a lot of puzzled people wanting to know what on earth I’m wearing – not because they don’t like it, just because it doesn’t smell like everything else. Longevity and projection are both beast, so go easy on the sprayer. This is also probably the most versatile scent I’ve ever smelt – just as great when relaxing on the beach as it is relaxing at the fireside. I haven’t tried the reformulation(s) but, as far as the vintage is concerned, this is the absolute crème de la crème of ‘barbershop’ frags – an absolute gem!

Jazz is a competent, classy and very masculine fougere with plenty of earthy greenness. It’s a very, very similar scent to Tsar, but Jazz is smoother and less soapy. I happen to like the bracing herbal soapiness of Tsar, but for those who don’t, Jazz is a good (but alas, much pricier) option.

  22. :

    3 out of 5

I couldn’t agree more with all who call this a classic fougere. A true inspiration that was created by YSL, very similar is Tsar and Safari. I enjoy the late 80’s early 90’s deep woodsy/warm /spicy blend. There’s floral notes of Geranium and the obvious lavender top notes giving to that sharp crisp vib.
Longevity and Silage is a BEAST
    Overall,
YSL, when the relaunch of M7, Pour Homme and Jazz I was hopefully that they would very close. Unfortunately these CLASSIC’S and SOPHISTICATED frag’s fade away within an hour, not the original version. For those who are interested this classic’s do yourself a favor find the orginal version, you will understand why. The original version is still far more complex than anything coming out today. 8/10

My first encounter with Jazz was on my cousins college roommate. I slept in his bed while visiting, and loved the scent since it was all over his sheets. He was handsome and it fit him perfectly. Later on, I bought it for my husband. Made him smell divine and he loved how I would skim my nose along his neck and chest while taking it in. Very sexy. Not loud or overly forward, just simply delicious sexy!

Indeed, a fresh fougere it certainly is! Must be something with the lime note that works so well.
(My bottle is vintage, with the opaque black & white plastic shell)
This has a lot of notes in common with Tsar. And… well, I do not care for Tsar (too soapy). Jazz is “just right”. I thought perhaps I just didn’t care for the lavender, coriander, nutmeg, artemisia, and oakmoss accord. But Jazz somehow mixes things up a bit differently. It reminds me a little of Gucci Nobile, a favorite.
The Prestige version is even better, with heaps of sandalwood. But wow… basic Jazz is great too. You can definitely have both in your wardrobe and not feel like you’ve got duplicates.

I began concocting my own perfumes, and all of a sudden, as I was trying one that featured lavender and carnation, I thought “damn, this is that weird note in Jazz”. The two flowers fight it out ontop of oakmoss, and from it is born a weird funky skanky smell. I love it. It induces a happy feeling in me.

  28. :

    3 out of 5

Wow, this is a great classic fresh fougere. It is 27 years old and smells so much like a contemporary favorite Tom Ford Noir edt. It is fresh and yet very cozy, well blended. Jazz and Tom Ford Noir edt have the best citrus floral herbal accord opening of any fragrance I have sampled.
I usually don’t like sweet fragrances. With Jazz I don’t mind the sweetness, with the natural herbs and spices, the sweetness some how gives a nice balance to the notes and excentuates the citrus fruity note.; frst sweet fragrance I like.
It is a jazzy improvisation of old school classic gentlemen’s fragrance with the leather and tobaco. Yet the opening feels fresh contemporary. It’s a great clash of contrasts, fresh spices with warm notes. I think I’m getting aldehydes in the mid that make the fragrance feel wet vs dry.
This could really be an important benchmark classic. It still holds on to the past , it may have come from fragrances like ” Xeryus “, which was popular and proceeded Jazz by a couple years. But then it has that really modern fresh herbal top notes, that you find it later fougers such as Rive Gauche, and the very recent Tom Ford Noir.
TF Noir has more richness in the Oriental base notes but the citrus and fresh spicy opening is the same. I think Tom Ford is a great parfumer, but it seems like he takes old classics and makes them better. Like his Italian Cypress is like Z-14, and now I know where the idea for Noir came from, YSL Jazz.
With the Fall coming soon I was looking for a nice herbal fresh fougere and found TF Noir, now I’m happy to have Jazz for my colection. Its a bit redundant from Noir, and TF Noir is a bit better, and at the same price as vintage Jazz, if you get a good deal on ebay.
I’ve been wearing vintage YSL Rive Gauche recently and Jazz is so much nicer and more satisfying. Rive Gauche is of the same genre as Jazz fresh spicy fougere, but where Rive Gauche is a bit hollow with nice top notes and mid, Jazz has more complexity and nice woodier base notes that ground the fragrance.
Jazz is really one of the very best of It’s genre in the past 30 years. Thank you Tom Ford for bringing it back and making it even better. (Tom Ford Noir edt).
Jazz is a bit more masculine, with tabaco and leather nuances. TF Noir a bit more powdery. I’m referring more to the drydown of both.
    Rating: 8.75/10
    God bless you. ( John 3:16 )

I had a bottle of this many years ago, early 90s. I found it quite unusual and it was probably a bit too mature for me at the time, a spotty teen who overdosed in it! At times over the years I have meant to buy another bottle but never got round to it and then the reformulation/repackaging and it smelt different to what I remembered (not in a good way)
Luckily I found an old style bottle (as pictured above) in a small chemist at a bargain price. Now I am older it smells even better than I remember.
    A true classic.

This is my dad’s fav fragrance, and last year I gave another bottle to him as a gift. Everytime I sniff this it’s like something new. Fresh, a bit sweet, and dark. I can see why young men in their 20’s to 40 and more are wearing it because it’s not too heavy, but classy and not old smelling at all. Totally like it.

My first ever cologne, a Christmas gift when I was 17 and had only lately got into shaving…this is such a good one to start with (I recommend it to teenage wearers) because it’s clean, fresh, but with a nice spicy hint that keeps it interesting. If you are looking for a gift for a young man this Christmas then buy this: it has way more class than Brut or Old Spice, is much easier to wear than Kouros and even after 20 or 30 years it does not smell like an old man’s Bay Rum cologne. It is also FAR more interesting than the multitude of oceanic, ozonic scents around today and stands out from these in a very classy way.

Just a short note: YSL Jazz does not remind me of Tsar by Van Cleef and Arpels at all. They are different beasts. Jazz does make me think of the original Halston 101. There is a certain essence that reminds me of metal for some reason. I love Jazz and glad I still have a bottle. I still miss 101.
Edit: 10/01/2014 I get compliments from women in the office on this one. I hear “you smell so good” and “you smell very manly”. I like when an attractive woman in the office tells me this and leans in to smell me. Isn’t this mostly the reason we wear cologne?!?!

    JAZZ is great.
People keep laughing when I tell them i still wear this scent (as though anything that isn’t ‘new’ should be thrown away), but it’s precisely why JAZZ (and KOUROS) are going strong decades later… they are perfect ‘seminal’ scents. They were hits for a reason.

History truly is a guide to the present day.
Released the same year as Cool Water, Jazz is sadly overshadowed these days by its flanker, Live Jazz. I’ve never tried Live Jazz, and I’m in no hurry to, although one day I certainly will. I wanted to own a bottle of Jazz for one reason, and one reason only: its fans feel much better about it now than they did in 1988. They don’t feel that way because of a formula change (it has been reformulated, probably several times), but simply because the general nature of Jazz seemed rather commonplace and perhaps a little dull, back when it was surrounded by similar woody ferns in a decade chock full of woody ferns.
Fast forward to the twenty-first century, after a decade of uninspired Acqua di Gio clones and Cool Water rip-offs, and suddenly this artemisia-based fougere by YSL smells much better, an elegantly mature reiteration of “fresh.” It opens with a bright spicy fougere accord, transitions into tobacco, wormwood, nutmeg, cedar, and a handful of other very dusky-smelling things, and ends on a sweet, musky amber, with a nice dab of moss (oakmoss is present in my bottle). Aside from an oddly urinous, slightly unbalanced herbal citrus note on top, I think this fragrance is perfect. I imagine coming back to it is like revisiting the movie Basic Instinct for a lot of guys. It seemed campy and crass the first time around, but today it’s stylistically sleek and inspiring. Earthy-spicy fougeres are a part of every man’s basic instinct, and there’s even a nifty horn section in here.
Jazz is softer and less green than Tsar, but they’re kissing cousins. It’s good for autumn wear.

I love this one, from the harsh opening through the wonderfully smooth development. A successfully balanced fragrance of spicy, woody, and floral accords, tinged with citrus. A perfect accompaniment to any event.

I’ve found this fragrance is rather similar to STDupont Pour Homme, especially in the first couple hours of wearing. But than the Jazz formula becomes disbalanced and I start feeling caustic citrus-coniferous notes which are annoying me. I have twofaced feelings to this cologne: good at the morning and awful after lunch. Maybe the cold weather play against me, maybe not…

Jazz is my summer vacation by the beach , daytime casual cologne..I need something sharp and crisp as I leave my hotel leaving a trail of class and sophistication from the elevator to the lobby..the opening notes of lavender and corriander give me a burst of energy like no other.

I wore this in 1988 until the bottle (white and black plastic zigzag shaped) ran out, I remember it to be citrus sweet fruity and creamy, like a Male version of Gucci Rush. I couldn’t imagine anyone wearing it these days as it had such a gimmicky 80’s feel to it, even though of course there is a big revival currently.

The Jazz, brings me back to the early 90s. The floral notes were strange in a masculine scent in Those Years, my mother wore Jazz. She thought it was much more feminine than masculine.
It Has Been proven that Jazz is timeless and conceptual. It is rather a male fragrance. The artemisia cries off and the drydown is wonderful, Jazz is not for anyone. He has class. Refers to the Jazz (musical style), the streets of New Orleans, mild climate, trumpet in the background.
I do not consider “dated,” he has class, combines with romantic moments together. Family dinner.
Projection is between moderated and heavy
    excellent longevity
A classic from the house Yves Saint Laurent

Funny story. No one knows precisely where the name Jazz came from, and early on it was spelled Jass. One theory was that it was short for Jasmine, a type of perfume which was almost only worn by working girls in New Orleans with which the early jazz music was closely related. So they played “Jass” in their houses of ill repute until some cheeky kids started scrubbing the “J” off all the ads and drums, hence changing to the Z’s.
Thought some people may find that interesting
As to the fragrance, very similar to Tsar, dark herbal notes prefectly suited to cold days and the older gentleman. Not a personal favourite and a little stuffy but not bad at all

This is one of the very worst fragrances I ever smelled, and tried it countless times, both on skin and on paper and the result is consistently the same. I wonder how they managed to get such an (extremely) unpleasant scent from such adorable notes like coriander and geranium. That is quite an achievement and I give them that. I wonder why they discontinued live jazz and not this one. Staying power is average, but the scent totally notorious, as I said, unique, I am sure, and quite a masterpiece of creativity and imagination.

The fragarance though famous , It appears to me not the fragrance sought for a man .The fresh and Vibrant notes of corriander and its association with Geranium ,artemisia, cyprus ,and patchouli were to me nothing but an expression of the paradoxes of a complexe personnality which rounds between white and Black,Fresh and woody ,Clear and sombre, sensibility and power.I think that there would be no clear say on this perfume since it would give me no impression of what it really is ,and as the alternation of unbalanced components meant to convey richness ,encounter and multi ethnicity continue ,it would not reprsent me .

I agree with Luca Turin that this seems timid and overly complex, at least at times. I’ve only tried the glass bottle with plastic cap, so the original might be different. Jazz is nicely balanced, so if you fear heavy fougeres, you don’t have to worry here, as that accord is not pronounced (though it’s clearly present). It’s not too sweet either. In some ways, it’s “a little of this, a little of that,” but it didn’t get boring. However, it might if I wear it a few times so I’ll have to update this review after future wearings. I haven’t tried Tsar so I can’t compare it to that one. It’s hard for me to say what it should be compared to, because it possesses aspects of several “men’s” fragrances I’ve tried. It’s definitely not an “80s power” fragrance, though I can understand someone calling it a light version of that kind of scent.
UPDATE: I obtained some of the original, in that white and black plastic bottle, and find it to be really special. It has a kind of deli
