I don’t believe this is an authentic 1600’s/1700’s French royal perfume. It is impossible for us in the far flung future of 2016 to perfectly and accurately recreate the formula for the perfume attars and oils which French royalty used to scent their baths. They were basically perfumed body lotions and the perfumes were no more than a hygienic tool they used to mask their horrendous body odor. King Louis the 14th I imagine would have smelled of deer musk and the scent was prominent when he came back to the palace after a day’s hunt. That’s how I feel about Bal A Versailles by Jean Desprez. Marie Antoinette would have smelled of flowers and soliflores, rosewater, jasmine, magnolia, violets, and hyacinth. This is an attempt to capture the flowers in the gardens of Versailles in the spring time. But unfortunately it can indeed pass for a Christian Dior J’adore dupe. Even with that being said I love it. It’s a fresh and flowery amber perfume and on the plus side you get to keep the luxurious bottle which looks like an objet d’art. Jardins opens with fruity notes of mandarin orange melon plum and peach. This is the best part. It’s sweet and fruity but the reason everyone loves it is because it does become very reminiscent of J’adore by Dior. I could mostly make out the peach the melon and the citrus. There is a plum listed in the middle notes but it makes it’s appearance early into the scent’s first stage. The fragrance develops for about 5 hours and turns into mostly flowery smells of jasmine, tuberose, rose, violet and orchid. Beautiful and fragrant flowers. There does not appear to be one flower that dominates the other. They’re bunched up in a bouquet. The dry down is a subdued but decent patchouli, some musk and amber. I would never call this fragrance a unisex perfume. It’s feminine, fruity, and floral. It’s great on a spring day at the beach or on vacation. For summer as well. Sweet and pretty, casual and suits a woman wearing a sun dress. Really very nice despite the connection to Dior’s J’adore. This was my first purchase of the Chateau de Versailles perfumes and this is my least favorite. This is also my first Fragrantica Review.

Jardin opens with a lovely pairing of magnolia and citrus. It’s very very similar to J’adore by Dior which is very interesting because another Chateau de Versailles fragrance – Promenade a Versailles – has the exact same formula as Dior’s Miss Dior Cherie. It would appear as if this fragrance line, which ought to be more prestigious and more serious in their recreation of perfumes from the time of Marie Antoinette, is turning into a dupe for other fragrances. Not this one however as only the opening is reminiscent of J’adore. Anyways I love J’adore and the magnolia opening. The rest of the fragrance is floral with jasmine, tuberose, violet, rose and orchid. None of them smell like actual floral extracts and I know that they’re fantasy flowers made in a lab. But they do smell good and powdery, feminine and very sweet. This does have a Marie Antoinette vibe. The last stage of the fragrance’s perform is musk patchouli and amber which are a good support for the flower notes. Elegant, expensive and beautiful. And the bottle is absolutely gorgeous. I’m a sucker for a good looking bottle. The design of the bottle is Louis the 14th as Apollo the Sun God which adorns most of the Chateau de Versailles including the front Gate. This is really nice and I’m wearing it in Paris for Fashion Week. People are already saying it smells like I’m wearing J’Adore LOL
