I’ve already reviewed this more than once, but after reading JTD’s excellent appraisal of both old & new iterations over on scenthurdle, I’ll just add this:
I love classics, and Habit Rouge is probably the only one I’ve tried for which I do not feel any real interest in pursuing the vintage for a reference point. It’s not that I’m not curious intellectually, but that the current version feels like such a complete success both artistically and functionally that it just does not leave me wondering or wanting… The same goes for flankers or whatever, at least for the past 18 months or so I’ve lived with the EDT. This (and I’m sure there are one or two people out there who can relate) is pretty rare for me, and probably one of the bigger endorsements I can offer. There’s really also nothing I can imagine replacing it within my wardrobe… It too perfectly fulfills too many essential roles (the ones that are tricky as they call for patience or grace or a moment of unearned, sunny optimism). Even the sum of Tom Ford’s earnest homages can’t beat it… Thank goodness it’s ‘as much an institution as croissants,’ as someone said.

Habit Rouge EDT is one classy fragrance. It is mature without feeling dated or old. From the top, there is a ton of citrus and florals. It is so well blended it is difficult to pull out the individual notes (to my nose) but I definitely got rose and more of the sour citruses like lime, lemon, and bergamot. For me, on skin, the top is kind of harsh and very potent. If you spray this like 4 or 5 times, you will smell it on yourself strongly and the projection and sillage are enormous.
The dry down is where this one becomes so wonderful. After an hour or so, that citrus and floral blast dies down and what you are left with is a soft, powdery, sandalwood with amber and vanilla. It is so pleasant and gentlemanly, perfect for the office or any kind of occasions where politeness and humility are expected. It isn’t feminine at all; you get some leather, patchouli, and a warm cinnamon note that is vaguely spicy and more incense-like, probably due to the blend. It has a powdery fresh barbershop quality. One of my favorite YouTubers in the frag com, Dracdoc, has commented that it smells like “sweet dust”.
I would say this is a must have for any frag-heads collection, OR if you are a mature man (35+). Younger men can pull this off if they are put together and for formal occasions. It is a distinguished office scent. Could wear this day or night, but I would consider this more of a daytime fragrance. Longevity is good, about 8 hours or so, and the dry down has a reasonable projection of 3 or so feet.
I give it a solid 8.25/10. I don’t wear this often, but when I do I am always surprised by how delightful the dry down actually is. Is it signature scent worthy? Maybe not unless you are a well-dressed man in his 40s onward. That said, I am a sucker for a good sandalwood and amber combo.

Love at first sniff! I just got this in the mail with some other Guerlain fragrances I ordered and I did not expect this to be the one I wanted to wear immediately. But it is. I just showered so I could put it on and I’m in love.
It’s way too soon to do a proper review of notes, longevity and all that, but all I can say is I fell in love with it right away.
NillAlignique – :
What more can be said about this fantastic fragrance that hasn’t already been said? Not much. So, I will just give its performance on me. Habit Rouge with 4-5 sprays performs well above average on my skin both in longevity and sillage. A spray or two on your shirt increases the already great performance quite a bit without being overpowering. I would recommend Habit Rouge for anyone over 30 and I feel this and Vetiver should be in every collection.
KENT_VIRUS – :
I get soapiness, but not in the rough retro style. It is a rose scented soap with some vanilla body lotion and good mannered woody-resinous density in the background. Citruses combine with the rose to give it some high frequency sparkling bubbliness, but don’t take it to a freshie category by any means. All the notes are very well blended, nothing sticks out too much, overall impression is very pleasant. Actually, it’s too “pretty” to be a distinctively masculine fragrance. On a grown up woman, this would work very well. So, for me, it is a unisex fragrance. I can see why it is being described as a “happy scent”. Wearing this while frowning would appear outright ridiculous.
Burtalkro – :
Switch it up! But don’t forget where you came from! L’Habit Rouge is that bridge to the past or that reference to the classics. We all love fragrances here, and fashion certainly has to pique our interests as well. On the cusp of my forties I find that sometimes I want to not act my age or at least appear like I am not my age and it is usually expressed through my clothing. L’Habit rouge is my olfactory bungee cord that snaps me back into reality. So, I may slip on some Vans and dare I say some skinny jeans and head out with the family or the missus on a jaunt on the town, and before heading out L’Habit Rouge gets sprayed on and almost acts as a, “get out of jail card”. I leave the house looking like a dude hanging on to former glories but I am covered in a mist of pure class and maturity.
L’Habit Rouge is just a heavy hitter of orange, lemon/citruses, rose, leather and patchouli beautifully executed! The scent is rich and multidimensional; L’Habit Rouge veers from heavy and leathery to powdery and citrusy (this fragrance truly evolves and the dry down is where it all pays off!). L’ Habit Rouge is a modern classic and needs to be smelt to be truly understood.
L’Habit Rouge sadly gets called dated or is said to be better suited for older gentlemen… AU CONTRAIRE! This fragrance is timeless and truly adds a classy sophisticated angle to anyone’s style. To dismiss L’Habit Rouge as an old man’s scent would be a terrible error. This composition is for both genders and works well in or out of the office. L’Habit Rouge is full bottle worthy and is there to remind you that however much you want to play with your look or show your youthful side, you always have a secret sophisticated weapon to justify your style, no matter your age!
bigdef – :
Any indication that this was a red perfume was dispelled on first spray. It really smells more “yellow”, This feels very unisex. I can definitely see myself wear this.
Alex82 – :
Wearable in warm weather? Hell yes! Horchata, orange-blossom hotel soap, suntan lotion and fresh sawdust, with a slice of lemon perched on the edge of your drink and a vase of roses on the table. My itinerary includes road trips, art museums and lumber stores, but suitable for all occasions in which you want to feel coherent & cheerful.
Belal – :
Nice sweet citrusy scent (new bottle).
A kind of happy fragrance, soft, inoffensive, subtle, and perhaps a little old fashioned to some, but I quite like it for that.
Nice to wear when I’m at home in the day.
I like it.
I’ve not had it for very long, so this could end up being a ‘love’, as Guerlains offerings tend to grow on me over time.
ManucozRU – :
I have heard Habit rouge described in many ways but most of them fail to convey how this scent makes me feel. Many make it sound formal, cultured and intellectual but that couldn’t really be further from my mind when I wear it.
For me Habit Rouge is like a smile in a bottle. It opens with a sweetened cologne like citrus blast. The freshness lasts quite awhile but gives way to floral powdery sweetness, woods and leather. It never feels cloying and has a kind of a rough edge to it. It is a fragrance that feels both heavy and light, lively and relaxing.
I love how Habit Rouge takes your nose on a drive and ends up smelling quite different than in the beginning as time progresses. I get how some people don’t take an immediate liking to this classic but I urge people to give this another chance. It might be a French institution like croissants but it is not so easily digestible as one. I could describe it as a religious experience tongue firmly planted in cheek. First I thought it smelled like a church but now I am part of the congregation.
ohoon – :
As of yesterday I am the proud owner a vintage bottle of Habit Rouge EDT (the one with the golden sprayer and the gold edge around the label)! I do not have the reformulated version but here is what you are most probably missing by going for the reform:
1. A distinct carnation note which is very prominent and of the same calibre as the carnation in Photo by Karl Lagerfeld (which I also own in…..you guessed it- it’s vintage formulation; by the way shout out to Chris from ScentLand :D).
2. A rose which envelopes the carnation
1&2 give the fragrance that typical old-school fragrance mildly “harsh” feel (what an oxymoron). I am almost certain that the new formulation does not provide one’s nose with this sensation. For some people this might not be essential but any vintage head would find it highly desirable.
On to the lemon and the leather. The lemon is very short lived in the vintage. We are talking minutes in the opening and that’s it. Interestingly enough, you have to take a deep sniff of the fragrance after about half an hour in order to feel the leather. It sort of takes a back seat to the rose and carnation which I did not expect. I expected HR to be more leathery from the get go.
Lastly, the vanilla in this fragrance is only an accord in the whole symphony of notes and does not take central stage thereby making the fragrance an unnecessarily sweet concoction. This is great because there is always a fine line when it comes to vanilla in a mens fragrance.
I definitely need to test HR in the colder months of the year.

This is a classic; an intense citrus, rose, and leather blend. It was released also in an edp concentration, and several flankers. Many people get a dated vibe from this creation as I do, but I think that’s the beauty of this fragrance. It starts fresh with a blast of lemon, bergamot, and orange; then warms up on your skin to a powdery Rosy leather. The citrusy background hangs on throughout the life of the fragrance. This is a year round fragrance with right spray adjustments. An affordable fragrance that is so versatile, for suits and a t-shirts, rain or sunshine, morning, afternoon, & evening with excellent performance. This is definitely on my “Swiss Army Knife Fragrances.”

Gabrielle_fromAC – :
I’m finding (for me, so far) all the JP Guerlain men’s fragrances are like a stormy relationship…in reverse, and all over in a day or so.
It starts out where most other things end:with a huge argument, lots of heated words, things being thrown. Hate even. Why, oh why did I get involved in all this?
Then there’s the better times, a little uneasy and not sure this thing will last, but you give it a few more months to work itself out.
Then there’s the best times. All the fun, mystery and romance. The passion and the raw emotions/animal instinct mixed with a loving tenderness that you know will last forever….
Finally, there’s butterflies in the stomach…can’t think about anything else…why won’t they call? Am I ever going to see them again?
Then it’s gone. Just a memory that lingers until the next few sprays, and it starts all over again.
I won’t even attempt to guess how it’s done. Only look forward to the next installments.
I think I’m hooked on these one day reverse-love-hate-stands.

One of my female friends loves to wear Habit Rouge & they “look” so good together. She has a sunny disposition, she´s optimistic & light-hearted – and Habit Rouge is a perfect fit for a woman like her. The fragrance is fresh, herbal, slightly spicy, semisweet & smoky, in short – casual & sophisticated.
As for me, Habit Rouge has the best of classical/traditional colognes – but without sharp & sour edges and facets, that´s what I really appreciate and prefer.

LEMON! That’s how it opens…smack! Quite surprisingly the opening lasts a lot longer than what you might be used to with top notes.
Then a beautiful rose and sandlewood kicks in, quality ingredients here. Wait a little longer and the vanilla comes through.
This is a classic, love it! Very elegant.

Wow, okay will be honest this one rubbed me a little the wrong way when i first tried it but its really growing on me and has made its way into my loved fragrances. There is a huge citrus in its opening that really blasts the rose but in such a fresh way not usually a fan of this kind of rose but it smells so fresh and natural..takes me back to when i was growing up walking past one of my mother’s rosebushes when they were in full bloom! When that fades then I get a very nice woodsy vanilla scent that lasts for a good long while. I don’t really get the incense smell people keep talking about with this one but overall a very nice fragrance that I’m really enjoying!

GUERLAIN HABIT ROUGE
Refined and elegant, this one reminds me to live life with an awareness of my dignity, and calls me to live life fully alive.
“I am a man. I am both body and soul. With powers of intellect and will. I am not a slave to base impulse. Rather, I appreciate life and live it with passion. I am in touch with time and its affairs, and I live with an eye toward eternal realities.
Therefore, I am a gentleman, and I present myself as such.”
Habit Rouge is a gentleman’s fragrance.
Citrus and florals give it a youthful joy.
Leather and woods give it the masculinity of strength and character, as well as intrigue.
Vanilla and cinnamon give it passion for life.
Incense reminds us that life and love reach into eternity.
Truly a celebration of humanity!

I rarely wear unisex and I haven’t worn fragrances designed for men, but when my husband applied this, it was all over…I had to have it.
I think it’s the most stunning fragrance – probably the most floral of the male fragrances I am familiar with.
Gorgeous Guerlain – wonderful on my husband, but I really love it on me – also lasts a good 8 hours. Dreamy, slightly Eau de Shalimar, a bit of vanilla and powder…and don’t think this isn’t suitable for men because it sounds so pretty…it absolutely is.

I blind bought this and I did not like it at all. I do not find this masculine at all, it is very feminine to me, and on me I’m afraid I can only say that it does smell like you are backstage in old ladies dressing room or hairdressers. I could not wait to finish the bottle, I almost threw it away, but I did finish it to see if my opinion would change, just not what I wanted, at all. I would recommend not blind buying this scent, seems a love it or hate it one to me. I think it is possibly the worst fragrance I have ever worn, joint 1st place with the Sex Pistols fragrance, which was pure vile and offensive. I would like to try something more masculine from Guerlain, as this house does seem quite unique to me, so I may try Vetiver at some point.
Uttemychowhet – :
Someone’s already said it, but every time I wear this I get something different: a tangy uplifting bergamot, spine-aligning green vetiver, a cool earthy patch that settles in lightly with the dusty spices and powder, or sticky, phlegmatic labdanum; even a touch of civet in the slick-but-lived-in leather accord.
I smell all kinds of imaginary accords (fruit loops! buttered popcorn! green bamboo! pralines!) It SHOULD be a damned mess, but it’s genius instead. My tastes vary as to genre, but it’s a contender for GOAT for me. The technical construction (projection-longevity-sillage-drydown) is also flawless.
Maters – :
Congratulations to Jean Paul Guerlain for this work of art.
I bought a flask of Habit Rouge EDT about 5 months ago and only now I feel at ease to try a review.
– It opens with a strong lemon note that I specificaly identify as persian lime (citrus limettioides), Probably due to other minor notes like tangerine, green lime, orange and basil, it smells like strong plesant lemon tea. It’s a powerfull good quality lemon for sure. This stage is quite long which is a bit unusual. Again we may conclude that this is a high quality fragrance.
– With the hearth notes, the scent became powdery with rose-carnation-cinnamon-sandal flavours but without loosing the heavy lemon tea note. The transition is subtle and extreamly well composed.
– The bottom notes reveal a smoth yet persistant leather-vanilla scent. The transition flows like a wide river. You get the new notes at avery slow pace while the primary notes are
gently left behind, What a fantastic harmony. The dry down is sweet and extreamly pleasant as well. The sweet powdry leather-vanilla gives you a long moment of peace and joy.
Comments: I applied 3 sprays in the back of my hand that vanished after 11~12 hours. The fragrance has a very unique evolution during the various stages and is undoubtedly very enjoyable. It projects heavily for a couple of hours and you get a sillage of 4~5 feet. I judge the performance to be well above average because the bold fresh scents do stay available for a long time. To scent this fragrance is a unique and happy experience.
Due to its well tamed sweetness, I imagine that this fragrance may as well be considered as unisex, I can picture this magificent powdry sweet Vanilla-Leather dry down on a woman’s skin,

Habit Rouge Eau de Toilette is a metaphor for life itself. Because in order to experience this fragrance and appreciate its true beauty, your participation is required. Namely…
• Knowledge that things are not always what they seem at first.
• Restraint to reserve hasty judgement.
• Patience to enjoy the stages and art of the perfumer’s craft.
• Humility to recognize that the perfumer certainly knows more than we do.
While Habit Rouge may or may not ultimately be your style, approaching it—or any fragrance—with these precepts will always enhance your experience and enjoyment.
The first time you smell Habit Rouge EdT you may be put off by the prominent citrus vanilla accord of the opening. Where’s the leather? Your knee-jerk reaction is likely to be negative. Certainly, it’s different than you had imagined.
But don’t judge too quickly. Embrace the opening for what it is. Observe the transition into the next stage. The leather that eventually comes isn’t the Knize or even Bel Ami variety—both of which I love. Habit Rouge’s leather accord truly is a fine, elegant, luxury car leather. This is an aristocratic leather.
It took me a year to finally come around to really appreciate how elegant and refined Habit Rouge is. Take your time. It’s not fast food. Resist snap judgements and Instant gratification. Habit Rouge embodies the perfumer’s art. It’s a privilege to wear.

In 1974 I was 17 and had a friend who was older than me. He introduced me to some of the taboo’s that made life sweet for a teenager just awakening to life’s pleasures.
My friend, Jeff, always had incense burning in his place, a must back then, and one day he handed me the incense tray that he burned those little cone-shaped incense nuggets on and told me to smell it. So I gave it a whiff and, ooh la la, I was mesmerized! The fragrance was soft, powdery and indescribably satisfying.
I said that if I was making love to a beautiful woman (I hadn’t yet) and kissed her on her chest, exactly between her breasts, THAT would be the smell that I would expect to smell. He told me that that was the smell of Jasmine.
After all these years I’ve been replenishing my perfume collection, after a tragic loss of 100, and recently I noticed Jasmine on Ebay and so, I had to buy some just to smell that smell again; it’s been nearly 40 years. Well, BIG disappointment – that incense was lovely but it was not the smell of jasmine.
So in rebuilding my collection, (did I say I love cologne?) most of my purchases have been blind but there have been only a few disappointments – mainly because they weren’t beast enough for my liking.
One of my blind purchases was, oh baby, Habit Rouge by Guerlain and wouldn’t you know it . . . it’s a little misleading at first application, but, after it settles down for an hour or two it’s beautiful and, pinch me, it also has that elusive aroma of that incense of my salad days.
Looking at the middle notes of this Habit Rouge D’ Guerlain I see jasmine but it holds a low rank in prominence. Nevertheless this fragrance is, I imagine, what the first day in heaven will smell like.

This was one of my first fragrances, when I started the hobby of exploring fragrances, and building my collection.
When I first sniffed it out, I got the sandalwood mostly and citrus, sandalwood reminding me of the incense sticks from the 60’s.
Now 80 bottle collection, and 300 reviews later, I continue to grow in my appreciation of this timeless, classic masterpiece.
For me, along with Hermes Equipage (vintage), they are the greatest classics.
Why…just so pleasant, simply pleasant and so well blended.
HR, the beatifull “accord” is what I get now, yes the beautiful contrasting accords.
The sandalwood and rosewood, making an accord with the florals, mostly jasmine and carnation for me, not so much rose.
Then the cinnamon, oakmoss, and patch add their nuances, but they just add a roundness to the basic theme of a threesome, smooth woods, citrus, and florals. Masterpiece!
Habit Rouge is great in it’s present formulation.
With some of my other great classics you need to get the vintage because the current formulations are not close to the vintage, such as Azzaro Pour Homme or Paco Rabanna Pour Homme. The present HR is a bit more modern in a good way compared to the vintage, which is richer, but does smell very dated.

Habit rouge edt. What a scent! Recently I started to get into so called” mans fragrance” because the ones for woman simply are too sweet for me. Maybe it`s because I am getting older ( almost 50:-) that my taste has changed and I feel out of place smelling like a candy hihi:-)
Habit rouge is too much for words, but I try. There are so many good reviews on this one, so I just give my two sents on it.
On me it simply smells creamy sandalwood guerlinade, quite musky to start with. Powdery in the midle. The drydown is smooth leather jacket creamy fresh and very put toghether. Ahwesome!
A strong frag with great sillage and lasting power. Not for hot weather in my eyes.
I am a woman and love it on moi ( me)!

Just to add yet another review on Habit Rouge.
Whereas some of my reviews are of reasonable length, the ones for this are short and to the point.
To me, there is nothing like this, it captivated me the first time that I tried it, without knowledge of all of the controversy, hype and love/hate on here.
Habit Rouge is a king in it’s genre, almost what I imagine that Heaven will smell like when I eventually get there!
I need no person, no review to tell me what I like. I have an extremely large collection, am knowledgeable blah blah blah. BUT, at the end of the day, I agree with the last reviewer in that people should do away with their pretentious assumptions, and like what they like. Knowledge about this subject is very different from having personal preferences!
As with everything else in life, follow KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid!

Thanks, Luna_J, for this great essay. Since you referenced my review, please let me clarify a few things:
My rating reflects only my own subjective overall impression of how this fragrance smells (today) and does not take into account any historical context. I’ve owned this sample for over a year and tried it several times, just to see if maybe my opinion of this has changed or whether I can pick out notes that I wasn’t able to detect before, etc.
I do admit that I kind of enjoy to explore and study this fragrance when I’m alone at home, for educational purposes, even though I very much dislike the overall theme and some of the effects appearing and disappearing throughout its development. I just have to take a shower and scrub it off afterwards.
I can totally understand that this is an important milestone in the history of perfumery and a well-constructed piece of art. But not everyone is into this kind of thing. So, what led me to write this rather polarizing review is that I felt there’s a strong overrepresentation of reviews by fragrance history nerds (and possibly a few wannabe experts who just repeat and amplify what they’ve read in other reviews) and an underrepresentation of “laymen” like me, who just want to smell good.
I think the word “timeless” is inappropriate here. Something timeless will be appreciated regardless of historical context. This, however, needs a lot of context in order to be fully appreciated (apparently, it’s even necessary to ponder about what powder stood for back in the day).
Even historic milestones are subject to personal taste, and it’s perfectly OK to dislike them and to express that in a review. Some of the reviews here read as if it could only be a lack of education that causes someone to dislike this fragrance. If you don’t like Habit Rouge, that doesn’t necessarily mean that your nose isn’t educated enough, that you haven’t travelled enough, don’t know your spices, or don’t know how to enjoy life. It just means that you don’t like Habit Rouge.

I’ve only worn samples of this previously, but recently acquired a full bottle, going a little against the grain (and spousal advice), since by last sampling of this seemed very powdery and rosy to me in a way that came across as conspicuously femme at the time (not a problem, per se, but not my thing, so I figured…) Summer is a funny time to try on an oriental, but I think the warm weather actually helped to make me a convert. I don’t know exactly what I can say about Habit Rouge that hasn’t already been said, but given that this fragrance is so extolled by lovers of history and tradition in perfumery, but also baffling or repel
