Description

Gossamer Roads is a nod to the Arab style of perfumery, a natural oil parfum packed with the luscious scents of real Roses, Sandalwood, Oud, Vanilla, Amber, Yarrow, Labdanum, Cedarwood, Benzoin and Bergamot. It’s not in any way a ground-breaking new fragrance, it’s an ancient style of perfume, and many (many) perfume houses all over the world have created their own interpretation of this timeless and classic style of perfume. Mine is simply all-natural, and just superb. Available as Eau de Parfum and oil Parfum.” – a note from the brand.

Gossamer Roads by Teone Reinthal Natural Perfume is a Oriental fragrance for women and men. The nose behind this fragrance is Teone Reinthal. The fragrance features bergamot, rose, sandalwood, vanilla, agarwood (oud), amber, yarrow, labdanum, benzoin and cedar.

Forgive my overt Saidian references that smack of 19th century Orientalism. But Gossamer Roads takes one back to a specific period where “Arab culture” was seen as romantic and exotic to curious, prying Western eyes. I once wrote a paper on the collection of Orientalist paintings by Jean-Léon Gérôme for my postgrad, and immediately upon smelling Gossamer Roads, the scent took me back to the vivid depictions of North African moorish architecture. Specifically the one painting that floated forward in my mind’s eye is ‘The Grief of a Pasha’, with its dimly lit background of a lavish Moroccan courtyard, the intricately carved archways, the luxurious carpet strewn with rose petals… and Gossamer Roads is the culmination of all the smells that might have emanated from that scene. The bakhoor burning in a corner, the fragrance of fruiting trees wafting in from the outside garden, the natural floral essences sprinkled about the pasha’s mansion. This house just seems to be getting better and better.
Note: The current niche perfume consumer market doesn’t seem that keen on oil parfums. I think it’s not due to any inherent strength of an alcohol medium over that of oil. Rather it’s a matter of personal preferences and habit. So far, I’ve found myself preferring Teone Reinthal’s oil parfums quite a bit over her edp. They just have a more rounded and polished effect, with the notes reflecting more three dimensionally off the skin. I’ve no idea what makes the difference. Some chemistry thing most likely.
Note 2: Oil parfums have a softer projection. Great when you want yourself and the person next to you to enjoy it. It isn’t gonna outcompete your boss’ perfume or announce your presence 5 minutes before your arrival. Makes for a more intimate wearing.

Gossamer Roads EDP is a variation of the oil parfum, though clearly in the same genre. Its lighter, and cleaner, the roses are brighter, the oud not as heavy.
If the oil parfum was a rich, luxurious, gossamer veil, then the EDP is a magnificently sheer, filmy veil of ethereal roses, and much wilder oud. The absence of the dense base notes found in the oil parfum allows the EDP to run rampant, the oud wildly, deliciously untamed, the roses carefree in an overgrown briar untouched by human hands. This is a far more contemporary version of a classic arabic scent, beautifully, wildly free, and totally unbridled of periodic restraints.
NB: This review is for the EDP – which is significantly different to the oil parfum of the same name reviewed below.

This is a beautifully uncomplicated, rose/oud composition. A timeless, classic blend, that flows and ebbs with the ages, like an endless, silken gossamer shawl with entrancing glints and glimmers as it moves with liquid fluidity in the light. A subtle spicy rose blooms in fore, before it yields to a heart of pure, natural oud. An air of genteel opulence rises from the heart, a feel of elegant middle eastern luxury, superior but seamless and effortlessly refined. A smooth, creamy sandalwood and vanilla base enhance the sublime indulgence of the oud, all the while a sheer, gently spicy veil of rose enraptures the entire fragrance, whispering like ancient oriental secrets under the glistening silk shawls. Its beguiling.
NB: review for oil parfum, edp is significantly different.
