Description
In Greek mythology, there is a story of a young lad Hyacinth and the sun god Apollo. Hyacinth was a very attractive boy whom Apollo loved very much. Because Hyacinth was equally fond of Apollo, it made Zephyrus the wind god very jealous. Therefore, one day when Apollo was throwing discus, Zephyrus changed the wind direction so that the discus would fly off-course and as a result strike Hyacinth. Apollo was so overcome with grief for he believed he had killed Hyacinth.
“I wish I could give up my life in return for yours, but I am unable to do this. I will play a tune on my lyre and sing of my love for you. You will become a flower and my sorrow will be carved on your petals”. As Apollo began to sing, the blood that was spilled on the ground disappeared gradually and soon grew into a beautiful flower – bright of color, rich in fragrance with lines etched on every petal. Hyacinths bloom every spring in memory of this handsome young man who lost his life.
True love does not demand possession. It is pure and kind. In truth, Apollo was like a companion and mentor to Hyacinth, content to remain by his side to watch him grow and enjoy the beauty of life. This is the epitome of true love – to experience happiness in knowing the person you love is happy. The hyacinth symbolizes living life in abundance and to the fullest. For Love of Hyacinth 风信子 was launched in 2014.

I admit, I am a bit of a proselytiser for Re:Classified. Living in China means that many overseas fragrances are beyond the pocket of ordinary mortals, and most Chinese brands are of the “gift for the Uncle you don’t much care for” variety. Most Chinese women wear fragrances rarely and men who wear fragrances are viewed with great suspicion.
It is odd, therefore, that RC advertise all of their fragrances as being for both genders. Especially “For Love of Hyacinth”. It is a classic grannies handbag fragrance.
Don’t get me wrong. It is a lovely fragrance and, for the first 5 minutes could be Unisex(dark, smokey grey/green).
But after that, it is pure synthetic Hyacinth for a very long time. I will wear it because I cannot countenance going out in public (or staying at home!) unscented, but it was really mis-sold. It is for women, women over 70 years old, who bake cakes and enter them into competitions in a church hall.
I will also wear it because it reminds me very much of my grandmother’s dressing table. I am also quite a heavy smoker and I think the fragrance will do nice things to the smell of cigarettes! (Oh, I know, smoking, but, hey, I live in China. It’s practically compulsory here.) Maybe its intensity is on account of the normal, Smokey, Chinese environment
I like “For Love of Hyacinth”, but it is not the house’s best effort, it is miss-sold.
(NB. the sales pitch for this, used in the blurb above, talks about a gay love triangle. Maybe Chinese perfumiers think that gay men are elderly ladies trapped in men’s bodies….)
