Imagine youselves in a lush forest when it is dark and a little rainy. You have came across a wooden house and you enter it. it has a fire place that is always burning through out whole night. inside there are animal pelts that smells like musk, floor is made out of cashmere wood. and this house has an owner named Bruce Wayne..
    10/10 Masterpiece

Much lighter than the name would suggest–sweet and woodsy, with an excellent drydown.

Now I understand why I said “It makes you think of a life far away from busy life” in my previous review. It is because Encre Noire takes me to a damp rainforest. Every time I’m wearing this, I strongly feel like I am walking deep in a wet rainforest. So natural. LOVE IT.

I work in the mountains, the sierra, deep in the interior of Spain. Every day I drive by a mountain meadow which lies flat and low by the the side of the road. At certain times of the year it has this pall of mist hanging over it in the mornings. If you wind the window of the car down as you drive through this mist, it smells of old churches. Old churches which are rarely frequented by worshippers. Encre Noir smells exactly the same. A rooty vetiver, far from the zingy green vetiver of say, Creed, and I’m talking about the version available pre-2008 with Millesime clearly marked on the bottle. Longevity is good, you particularly notice the lingering smell on clothes, even after some considerable time – several weeks.

I smell it and see: wet moss at the base of dead, destroyed, dry, eroded trees. Black and poisonous mushrooms, the fog in the Sleeping Valley (Sleepy Hollow). Yes, the setting can only be that. Encre Noire: The scent of the headless knight! simply, a scent of fantasy destined for total success just like the story of Washington Irving!
Destined to be my favorite as well as to be considered by me as the most refined and particular Vetiver in the history of perfumery and if we talk about this I mean that it is superior to Guerlain, Gray and Hombre. Vetiver? Yes, but of a different kind than all the others. A perfume that I do not wear on my skin, but on my soul, on my heart, with my way of being Bohémien, Anti-conformist, Revolutionary. Yes, I have no doubts: It’s HIM. My signature, my liquefied personality. MY PERFUME!
    One color: Black (obviously)
    An animal: Raven
A man: Johnny Depp (Not only for his wild charm and his mysterious being but also for having acted in Sleepy Hollow).
Four words: MYSTERIOUS, DARK, REBEL, WILD.
A poetic verse: “In the middle of the journey of our life I found myself within a dark woods where the straight way was lost.”
On me it has a very long-lasting persistence (24h).
    Trail: Intense
Rating: 10 with honors. I bow.
P.S. it’s fine even on an elegant man like the spot.

    For the uninitiated:
“Niche quality” is code for inaccessible.
If Guerlain Vetiver is a classic rock guitar solo, Encre Noir is sub-octave bass.

Very nice fragrance. Not as dark as everyone would have you believe. Good sillage, great longevity. This very much reminds me of one of my old favorites, Kenzo Air.

It’s similar to DS & Durga’s cowboy grass but way mellower. There are more woods and musk in Encre Noire, but it certainly does have that ‘dirty’, herbal vibe going on. Doesn’t project like crazy on my skin either like I’ve read others say. I’m so, so about it. Kinda smells like a pet store? I don’t know. Pass.

I had a crush with this one the first time I smelled it on paper. I felt in love deeply when I tested it on my skin.
Despite that, I opted for the sport flanker. Yes. I had too. It is not a choice from the heart, but of reason. Unless you work as a hitman, it is unreasonable to wear EN (note that I love powerhouses, but here, it is really intense…)
EN is VERY strong and dark. In my opinion, unwearable at the office or during warmer months evenings. Note also that the stronger note here is not vetiver, but cypress.
That said I want it. It’s magnetic. And despite it is not reasonable and despite the fact that I already have ENS, I know I will end up buying EN at some point. And wear it when I am alone at home. With me and myself.
    And also ENE. Ha.
    Winter only, 30+

This insanely cheap perfume is so cartoon manly you almost burst out laughing when you first smell it. It’s just so ramped up down and earthy it’s been dug up from the forest floor. This is not just a fragrance about going down to the forest and felling trees with a big axe it’s a fragrance about going down to the forest and felling trees with a big axe and then having a fight with a bear and if the bear doesn’t succumb to your manly fragrance-enhaced smoke-filled vetiver you can club the bear over the head with the bottle which is so strong the bear’s head will surely cave in under your blows. You then skin the bear and survive the bitter north Canadian winter months wrapped in its pelt before your inevitable rescue where you will emerge starey-eyed, unwashed and unshaven but smelling of Encre Noir. Bottle intact obviously.

This fragrance is insane, for anyone worried about “reformulation” and it being weak.. Well, I dread to think what the original was like. I bought a new bottle today and one spray is enough to fill a room easily.
As for the fragrance, it’s absolute class. I get the feeling of the earthiness from Terre d’Hermes without any of the brighter edges. This smells like the frag dug down into TdH, ripped out its heart and carried it back off to the forest in a dirty rag. I get a touch of spice which I’m guessing is the Cashmir, other than that, it’s all earthy, woods and vetiver. Completely unapologetic in its raw-ness. I think for that you’ll either love it or hate it. As a fan of vetiver, I’m firmly in the love crowd. It’s deep, rich and well-rounded. Absolutely masculine, but it does have a softness to it, there are no hard edges in sight. If you think you might like the smell of a forest fire, you’ll love it. It won’t be for everyone, but it’s unique and a deep, interesting, enrapturing frag. For the price you can grab this at online, it would be rude to not own this imo.

Bought this yesterday, dont get any smoke or dark vibes from this. To me the opening smells of ink and reminds me of book by commodity, then it dries down to a freshly printed magazine that has been smeared with lipstick. Someone else said it smells like the inside of a womans purse and i have to agree with that too.
To me this is one of the best fragrances dollar for dollar money can buy, i bought mine for $22 in nyc and wouldnt mine paying more. Last 10/12 hrs on my skin but doesnt project as much.
Safe blind buy for the price and non offensive, i have to give it a 10/10 because at that price Its hard to find something as good

Ok im right now at my third bottle all of them have been the one with 79% of alc wich is supposedly the reformulation.
It comes in a beautiful box and the presentation is very nice, sprayer and the cap are very well made and in general gives you a good feeling of quality in terms of presentation and quality of the bottle itself.
Now talking about the scent, when you first spray it you will get a heavenly insane good woody fragance very deep and then it will slowly fade into a very nice smell. You will often get olfactory fatigue with this fragance so please don’t worry if you can’t feel it anymore because trust me other people actually do, it always happens to me. You will get compliments from a bit mature women, I would say over 24 yr old or youngers with good taste in my opinion 😉
Its very suitable for using it on night dates, cold and winter scenes. Avoid for the hot summer.

This is an absolutely masterpiece. Some people say that it is so raw, not refined. In my opinion rawness makes this dark, mysterious vibe much more unique. It completes that kind of deep, austere atmosphere.

This is really good, dark, Woody Vetiver.
To me Vetiver is a tonic.
In the aromatherapy realm, it ticks a lot
    of boxes.
So to find a fragrance, that so richly focus’s and enhances it’s deep, mysterious, melancholic vibe, is akin to finding my health by way of luxury.
A case in point I am currently studying, as, if aromatherapy has any merit, our love of fragrance may go deeper than we understand.
Pontification aside, this deep, dark-green, smokey Woolen, Woody Vetiver has a heavy vibe, that is so good .
    Highly recommended, for brooders.

I first tried the L’extreme version which is a powerhouse and I love it l, it’s is one of my all time favourites…. for me this has the same dry down, a very addicting smell which is so good, the opening for me on this one isn’t as smooth or refined as the l’extreme, much harsher and really smoky like a bonfire which is a bit choking. Still a must for the classy mans collection as it last for ages and smells great and for the price it’s a no brainer, however if I could only have one it would be the L’extreme

Encre Noire is dry and austere and incredibly beautiful. Considering it is all vetiver and woods and has a dark, mysterious vibe, it might be suitable for cold weather, nighttime, or a stroll in the forest. But, I live in the hot California desert where the sun is brutal during the summer.
I think the heat amplifies Encre Noire’s austerity and makes it smell so much better. When I leave the house during high noon wearing this, I can almost feel my skin sizzle. I feel like a vampire on fire. Love this stuff.

How did I get a compliment on this one? I actually didn’t but the scent got one 🙂
It happened after lunch as soon as I finished washing my lunch box I sprayed some to freshen up and went out of the sink I am just lucky enough to overhear some colleagues who enter the wash area and they said wow it smelled so nice… They didn’t approach me for it.
So I have to agree with some reviews that this fragrance is a big NO! NO! in terms of blind buying, listening or watching reviews will help set your expectations but in the end it all boils down to your own judgment of the scent. You have to really like or love the scent, there shouldn’t be a self convincing factor for you to get this masterpiece. You’ve got to be drawn into it at first sniff then only you should buy it. It’s a scent for you everything else must not matter.
If you belong to some of us who fortunately is hooked to this fragrance naturally then it will always work for you..

    Encre Noir…..by Lalique.
The bottle itself is a handsome adornment to any collection.
The fragrance is every bit as dark and brooding as the name suggests.
    Very dark…very Earthy…very Smoky …
There is nothing light or sweet about this fragrance….
In my opinion…that is one of its most endearing qualities.
    Black like a polished onyx..smooth…
Dark greys, intermingled with the darkest green one can conceive of .
consistently dark all the way through.
There really is no other fragrance that this smells similar to….another
    endearing quality of this fragrance…
Interestingly enough….(and I may be the only one picking up on this)
There is a distinct cannabis note in there somewhere…
    When it comes to cannabis….I have a nose like a bloodhound..and it’s
definitely present in there, especially in the drydown.
This is a really a magnificent fragrance that could probably sell for double the retail.
    The Verdict: Excellent

I dont get the hype on this one, at best it is just ok… Kinda reminds me of old original Lysol spray (the one in the gold can). It is woody, sharp and dry, without a hint of sweetness.
It smells like going into grandparents attic, opening an old wooden steamer trunk which has been filled with antique linens, maybe contained mothballs a long time ago, and a little bit of that camphor scent is left behind, there is also a dried up bottle of some long forgotten ancient perfume grandma used years ago which she put in to scent the linens. there is a layer of dust and old furniture polish residue on the trunk, and there was some small fire in the attic many years ago with a little smokey scent left behind.
it is not a bad scent, just very formal. I think this would be best worn in a formal situation (think a courtroom, or board meeting). It is fairly unique however, sadly on my skin it only lasts a very short time, and becomes a skin scent within an hour.
To be fair, I have a recent bottle, and I have heard that the refomulation is nowhere near what the original was, but I have never smelled the original.
Still, this can be had cheaply, it is unique, and the presentation is lovely, so there is a place for it in a good collection.

Instant compliment from my wife. This being dark and smoky makes it a truly unique scent that walks the niche realm.

Ok, I admit it, it’s not a work of art, nor a house born to make perfumes, but … I like it.
Lalique, famous for its jewels, engages in the world of perfumes and does it very well. Let’s start from the bottle, very attractive, dark glass and wood effect cap, a lot of class in this package.
The perfume as said is not complex, three four predominant notes but they do their duty.Open with a very dark and pungent note, accompanied by cashmere and very vetiver, it seems almost a flaker of the guerlain vetiver dark version but attention, we are far from the quality and the evolution of the latter. So a very dark vetiver, seems to cross a forest in dim light after a storm, ideal in autumn and cool months. It remains very moist and gently sticks to the skin. Longevity and projection of painful notes but for a perfume under 30 euros what did you expect?
    rating 7.5 / 10

Tried this on a sample card in a store, am yet to try it on my skin.
First impression – SMOKE and wood. The wood smelled very nice but the smoke came through so much stronger than the wood did, I didn’t think it was wearable.
Smelling the card again later – Very woody and manly, I can imagine myself wearing this. Still a hint of smoke but it’s a welcome scent now. “Pencil shavings, rain, damp wood” was a perfect description. Seems simultaneously simple (as though it smells like only a few real-world things at once) and complex (because those things have depth and nuance) which is something I like a lot about this.
8 hours later – Colour association; deep orange (hint of red). Can’t describe much further. Hint of wood, no longer smokey.
24 hours later – Colour association; deep orange and a bit of dark but vivid pink I can’t discern any particular scent as being a certain ingredient or comparable to anything in particular.
Over all? I think I’m in love with this one. This is the very first fragrance I’ve sampled in a store so I’m cautious being so new and inexperienced, but I just can’t stop thinking about it.
    ————-
EDIT: I now own a bottle.
My bottle (on me and to my nose) doesn’t smell so smokey as the one in the store, it has a lovely balance of smokey vetiver and cedar on the opening.
I use one spray on my chest and one on my neck and catch occasional wafts of it but after the opening don’t smell it hugely often and it seems weak to me subjectively. I’m more or less certain this is nose blindness from getting used to the scent and the large Iso E Super molecule.
I LOVE this fragrance. I’ve never smelled anything like it.
I can’t comment on sillage and projection but as for longevity, if I apply it right after showering I can still smell it the next day before showering (at the same time) so it’s at least a noticable skin scent 24h later.

Are they burning vetiver & then bottling it?
The intense smokiness in my recently purchased tester (the formulation labeled 79%- see Noctulius review July 10 2018 below) is astounding.
I’m baffled why more reviewers have not remarked on the incredibly conspicuous, mesmerizing smoky note.

Get to know this fragrance and it’s like the shy guy in school: it leaves an audacious first impression but it’s not so weird after all. Have a few encounters and it’s actually harmless, nowhere near as divisive as its reputation suggests, genuinely original and only the confident or the brave will become its friend.
Pencil shavings, rain, damp wood. This should have no recommended season or occasion because anyone wearing it should be in the kind of mood not to worry about such things. A simple masterpiece.

This one SMOLDERS. A dark, moody dry vetiver that crackles and sparks throughout, Encre Noire is a guaranteed compliment-getter and smells like it could be from Comme des Garcons. Nathalie Lorson’s work for Lalique is consistently excellent.
I’ve got backup bottles of a few of my favorite fragrances but this one warrants like 5 or 6 backups, and it’s ridiculously inexpensive.
Smells even more luxe than the now discontinued Chanel Sycomore EDT.

Reformulated version sucks! Same bottle, but the scent is totally different from what it was until 2012 or 2013, when it had violet liquid instead of yellowish in the modern one. Pale shadow! R.I.P. one of the best frags ever created.

I bought this blind as it was on offer and I love vetiver as a note. This summer I’ve really enjoyed wearing Guerlain’s Vetiver, but to me it is a very summer scent and wanted something a bit darker when it starts to get colder again. I had heard good things about this and took a punt on it.
First impression, vetiver is definitely there, but this vetiver is much more earthy than I’m used to. It’s almost like a dirty version of a clean vetiver fragrance, like the one from Guerlain, imagine this vetiver has been left outside for a while, it’s got a little damp and a bit muddy, that is Encre Noir.
Personally I love it and can’t wait to wear it properly in the colder months.

I have ordered this one online based on the intriguing comments only. What can I say… The scent itself is wonderful but it smells very feminine to me. I literally feel like I’m wearing female fragrance. I was disappointed as I expected it to be darker and more intense. Well, it is still a good stuff, pleasant woody scent that definitely deserves attention. Just not my thing.

This cologne was a surprise to me all these years was trying to avoid any lalique fragrances until I read a lot of good reviews about this one and I agree with all the positive reviews, When I opened the box and spray it i was amazed about the beauty and perfection of this fragrance. The vetiver , citrus and wood are perfectly blended this one is a master piece and with its current selling price it is a must have fragrance.
The Packaging, the smell, sprayer and the juice inside, everything is made with quality in Encre Noire Lalique
I recommend this one for men above 30 years old and give it a rating 9 out of 10

    This has indeed been reformulated.
I bought a sample of Encre Noire on eBay and I thought it was excellent, totally great. Very different and certainly not for everyone. Imagine my disappointment when my 100 ML bottle arrived and it was so watered down that I thought I had gotten a fake. I did a little digging and no, I had not gotten a fake, but a reformulation. Here’s how you tell the difference:
Original Encre Noire: 78% alcohol, longer ingredients list
Reformulated Encre Noire: 79% alcohol and shorter ingredients list
A couple of users on here have correctly pointed out the 78% vs 79%, as this is the key to identifying each. I just wish I had noticed this BEFORE I bought the 100 ML bottle of EN that I’ll be returning to the store. Consistency is of huge importance to me, so unfortunately I have to say: RIP Encre Noire.
Edit: By the way, a couple of reviewers mentioned that EN is the scent of a young Varg Vikernes walking away from a burning church. As soon as I smelled this one (the original EN!) I couldn’t help but nod my head in agreement with the biggest grin.

I love this and think it works well as a unisex fragrance. It’s earthy, musky and mysterious. I bought it for my husband but I often sneak a little spray myself. I would recommend obtaining a sample before a bigger purchase as it may not suit everyone.

    Legendary Juice here
You get a dark, gothic ,dry and complex wood scent that offends the basic person
You get something bold, niche like and unique
With confidence and the right mix of rugged and classy clothes you can leave a powerful good impression with this
Overall a polarizing fragrance and do not recommend you blind buy this despite the deserved cult here
I personally smelled this from my dad’s collection and went for the l extreme version that is smoother, more sweet and more mass appealing, yet still rugged and masculine
Recommended for 30 plus men, I repeat “MEN”

Have to admit when I first tried this – blind buy – I thought, wtf! However, after deciding not to rush to judgment, I gave it some time. Now, I like it. The opening is not my favorite, but after it develops there is something about it that draws me in. Polarizing scent, no doubt. Would I buy it again? No. But I’m glad I decided to give it a shot.

Now I can smell it… Now I can’t!! Now I can smell it again!! No, wait! I can’t!!
I have mixed feelings about iso-e super fragrances. It seems like this ingredient( whose smell I find very attractive, by the way) was created to leave the wearer desire for more and more, without being able to truly satisfy their olfactory sense by smelling it. The people around me seem to smell it better than I can, even if I am the wearer, which annoys me a great deal, to say the least.
I have just blind bought and added Encre Noir to my collection and wore it today at the office. Whenever I was able to take some whiffs of it, I was in awe of its niche-quality smell and potency. However, every time it disappeared, it left me craving for it like a child craving for the lollipops seen in the candy-shop window.
If nobody has gone through the same experience(and according to the reviews so far it seems that nobody did), it can only mean one of two things:
    1. I am beginning to question my own sanity and/or nose.
    2. I bought a fake 100 ml bottle of Encre Noir.

  47. :

    5 out of 5

Encre Noir is just “very Lalique”. Like their other fragrances EN is somewhat subtle and both very simple and yet sophisticated. If you like vetiver in a smooth and not overpowering manner you will enjoy this juice. Because that’s what EN is, a subtle vetiver supported by a green cypress with some woodyness and something a bit earthy/primal in the background which must be the musk that is listed as a component. This is not a assertive vetiver like that of Guerlain but a gentler, quieter vetiver. This a fragrance that is relaxing and wearing it is reminiscent of what one may just unintentionally smell as one walks through foliage in a not overly manicured park after a rain. It’s a man’s fragrance, not unisex and you’ Detect no sweetness, fruitiness, or candy aromas unfortunately so popular today. EN isn’t a highly gregarious, social, funtime or even I’m the alpha male fragrance. EN won’t attract the attention of the ladies. But don’t think it dark or depressing, no this one you wear for yourself in a more quiet and introspective state of being, perfect for a meditative solo walk or just relaxing. I’m sure you could also wear it for other occasions of course but while not at all formal calling EN casual isn’t accurate either. It’s just very Lalique.

Funny i smell almost nothing after 2 mins of application. I have to stick my nose to back of my hand to smell it, but everyone else is smelling this on me. Is it because of iso e super?? Anyway it’s not my favourite parfum but it’s moody, it will always and always be in my collection when i get tired of new generic smells i always turn my head in to it especially when it rains, foggy, autmn nights

  49. :

    4 out of 5

For some reason, this one gives me a strong headache and somehow feels too synthetic, but it seems that most people don’t feel this way.
I wish my nose didn’t find it physically unbearable, because it evokes an understated masculine imagery, one of a rainy forest and moist earth. It’s somehow elusive and accessible at the same time. I’d imagine it to be more suitable for introspective and quiet characters.

    Gorgeous and classy perfume.
Even 4 years before I got my first bottle, by reading the reviews about it, I was pretty sure I was going to like this EDT very much. It’s such a masterpiece, not only for its wonderful and well made smell, but also for its beautiful bottle and box.
It’s a highly pleasant olfactory ride to a cypress rainy forest, plenty of burned wood, musk and smoked vetiver. A manly and warm fragrance that offers high-end quality.
It would be great if this Black Ink tattooed my skin forever.
Rating: A perfect and well deserved 10/10

Lalique used a team of Nathalie Lorson and Dart Vader to design this fragrance.
I bought my first bottle of Encre Noire about 3 years ago. Since then I already bought another bottle of Encre Noir and its flankers Extreme and Sport.
Encre Noire (black paint) is a strong vetiver cocktail. It’s not the traditional barbershop easy to wear vetiver. It’s a dark pleasing to wear vetiver accord, result of blending a couple of high quality vetiver notes. It’s extreamly classy and its wearer will surely be noticed by the people around him.
My attention was also captured by magnific minimalist black cubic bottle with a wooden cap. So simple and so beautiful.
This fragrance is signature scent material.
After a couple of sprays, you notice a magnificent imposing cypress. The vetiver middle notes make themselves noticed almost immediately, embracing the cypress without choking it.
You get a touch of wood (cashmere) and musk with the base notes to enhance the pleasant darkness mood.
There is something animalic about the fragrance that catches your attention in a good way. The notes combination lead you to scent a dark aura around the created ambiance together with a gorgeous smokiness.
Performance is above average. You get bigger performance if you spray on your clothes and hair. Easily you get an eight to ten hours of longevity. Sillage is not as strong and you share you darkness within five and six feet. You get a good enough projection of more than an arm lenght up to the third hour.
    My rates for Encre Noire
    Scent Opening: 9.0 (my judgement)
Scent Dry Down: 9.0 (my judgement)
    Longevity: 8.0
Sillage: 7.5 (5~6 feet at its peak with just 2 sprays)
Uniqueness: 9.0 (quite unique as a strong vetiver fragrance)
Wearability: 8.0 (It leans more to the night time and cold weather, although I consider perfectly safe to use it during Spring and Fall daytime)
Versatility: 8.0 (A dark fragrance does not please everybody, although its class will wvercome many barriers)
    Quality: 9.0 (my judgement)
Presentation: 10.0 (Defenetly in the front row of any shelf)
Price: 9.5 (100 ml non tester for 22 Euros + shipping)
    Overall rating: 8.70/10.00
    I strongly recommend this fragrance.

So delicious. Chanel DC’d Sycomore EDT, and the reformulation was lacking.
Encre Noire is a chewy, rich, dark, nutty vetiver, and it’s dead sexy on anyone. The price is so low for what you’re getting. I have Sel de Vetiver, Guerlain Vetiver, Terre d’Hermes, and all of these are also stunning vetivers but overwhelmingly I get the most compliments on my trusty Lalique.
I’m getting a backup bottle soon bc if they discontinue this I’ll only have ELDO Fat Electrician.

I have bought a decant of Encre Noire after hearing about it in so many great reviews so wanted to try it for a long time. Everyone says how dark, brooding and mysterious it is. I disagree. To me it opens up with loads of cypress (which I have found that I absolutely love) with some vetiver and cashmere wood in the background to add a layer of woodiness. I can see why some people compare it to Wonderwood (without being too similar). To be honest, it feels really fresh, clean, but with some backbone to me. Encre Noire reminds me of a clean, pine forest after the rain, which reminds me of Every Storm a Serenade by Imaginary Authors mixed with Hwyl by Aesop. In the drydown the vetiver comes out more and gives it a more earthy tone with a small hint of ink (which is never too strong, I barely detect it). The performance is shady, I get about 3-4 hours with an effervescent quality to it, EN fades in and out. This is a pity, since I really love this scent. For those who love woody scents, this is definitely a must-try. It is quite cheap as well, so you can reapply throughout the day.

A year ago I’ve started to look for a scent that will be somehow like me. When I first smelled it – I was like WOW! I want to smell like this forever! That’s so different and original, nobody smells like this! Then I’ve found fragrantica and everybody knows this…it’s signature of so many people and yeah…I imagine that it somehow really destroyed it – so I’ve started to look into other things. But I will have always Encre Noire in my collection. It’s like dirty pleasure for me now.
    Scent : 10/10
Sillage 7/10 for 2-3 hours later skin/clothes scent.
    Versatility: 7/10 Cold/rainy weather.
    Value: 10/10.
    Age: 25+
    Can be unisex.
