This is a beautiful scent that could easily be passed off as too feminine at first application. There is an initial fruity, floral blast, followed by salty aquatics and finally an earthy vibe. I am reminded of lying on a tropical beach next to a grove. Different scents waft my way as the breeze changes directions.
Someone expecting a linear, feminine fragrance will be disappointed. If you are looking for an in-your-face, über-masculine scent, you will likely pass this by and miss the more more resinous, woody, almost incense-like dry down (on my skin, at least). Like CDG’s Standard, the opening does not necessarily tell the whole story. For me, fragrances like these are just as likely to be a private escape as a public adornment.

I made the mistake of testing this perfume and ordering right away.
While the sample was light and airy, the full bottle was more woody with cinnamon.
It actually reminds me of one of the Playboy scents (can’t remember which one).
The drydown is powdery. I guess if I apply carefully and only once, this scent could be more wearable for my taste.
I’ve told myself a hundred times to not rush, but I can’t help it.
Here I am looking at the bottle, like to enemies in the same room, thinking: ‘I hate you!’

I had a sample and I loved it. I thought this was probably one of the best fragrances ever. Pure heaven.
So I ordered the full bottle.
Big mistake, and it’s not the first time this happens to me. I rush into something thinking that THIS IS IT!
Well, it smells like an old lady perfume.
The notes combined create a green type of scent but more like a pine needle and wet woods.
I couldn’t find a single person who could say something nice about this fragrance.
I give it to a friend.

On me, the beginning is awful: it smells harsh like copy paper. I was near washing it off, but luckily – it quickly softened, became more subtle and sweet, and closer to the skin.
After the first few terrible minutes, it started growing on me. Wet wood, powdery rose and a little bit of sour grapefruit intermingle – each whiff is different. On the whole, the fragrance is nothing to die for, but it’s refreshing and relaxing. An early summer morning by the sea. Not exactly my thing, but I can’t complain much either.
I think it’s a neat everyday perfume for those whose job demands a quiet, unobtrusive fragrance.

On me, this is grapefruit and pine-trees meet the sea. Interesting combination, and rather refreshing and soft. Midway through the cypress kicks in which upon another sniff of my wrist, feels very cool to my nose. The immortalle and rose keep it soft and a bit powdery. I rather like this and think it would be a great bottle to share with my guy. I think a man could easily wear this – perhaps even better than myself.

I don’t smell anything aquatic or breezy in this offer from l’Artisan. It opens very sweet (almost unbearable for my standards) and it takes a few minutes before the citruses kick in to cut the sweetness. I can’t pinpoint the source of this unpleasant facet but I’m glad it quiets down considerably. As it evolves it goes through a woody phase to settle in a nice balsamic-musky drydown that is pleasantly dry.
The citrus-wood contrast with an airy rose that surrounds it is the most charming element of the composition and it is a pity that the overly sweet element is subtracting rather than adding to it.
Lets be honest: this is no groundbreaking masterpiece. What it is is a decent eau, especially if you take into account the all natural composition that you would never get for that price. The concentration must be around 0,005% but the quantity makes up for it, just use it very liberally (cover every inch of your body and then repeat). Tenacity is very good for a natural but It wears close to the skin. Still, from time to time you will get pleasant whiffs even when you are not paying attention and other people will notice it too.
I have noticed a few peculiar effects in the performance of Cote d’Amour. It starts a bit harsh and then quickly quiets down. When you think it is dead and gone it starts building up its strength again. Don’t attempt to smell it on paper and topical application wont work either. This is activated by body heat. I get better performance by spraying several spritzes inside my shirt after I’m dressed. This way I get 6+ hours from it, even in a heatwave. The balance of notes change from wear to wear. Sometimes I get a strong citrus note, sometimes rose. Sometimes cypress and some vanilla.
A well behaved eau, excellent when a discreet fragrance for everyday wear is needed. Perfect to appease the chemophobic in every one of us!
Edit: I bought this and first used it in summer. Now I realize it performs much better during fall or spring. The cooler weather allows the top notes to linger long enough to appreciate them. It opens green and juicy like cucumber or green leaves and I think I can detect something like rose oxide. The evolution is very smooth and even the terpenic cedar that disrupts everything when the heat is strong now blends very well. Of course after the first 10-15 minutes it acts as a skin scent, very calm and aromatherapeutic.

Reading reviews prior to testing, I got the opinion that Cote d’Amour was going to be a ‘straight down the line’ aquatic, with all those oceanic qualities that I personally find irritating. I was really pleased to discover that this was not the case.
It does have aquatic tendencies, but it’s not an aquatic in the traditional sense. At first spray it smelt like fresh, watery cucumber and pink musk sticks. Amazing combination I must say.
The sweet muskiness stays on throughout the composition, and I believe this scent is brought about by the immortelle flower, (which I have never smelt in real life). The heart introduces some unique smells like herbaceous rosemary, rich, woodsy pine, zesty grapefruit and a hint of powdery rose. The way in which they blend is almost phenomenal. If Summer always smelt like this, I swear I would enjoy the hot season more than I do.
Cote d’Amour does tend to be on the lighter side, especially more towards the drydown, however the soft sillage did not reflect the lasting strength, which lasted a good eight hours on my skin. What I thought would be a scrubber turned out to be a fragrance that I loved wearing for the rest of the day.
I give Cote d’Amour the big thumbs up for its unique composition, and another tick in the box for the way in which it kept me perplexed, yet under its spell. L’Artisan hasn’t made a mistake with this fragrance, no not at all.

If you cant be bothered to take a stroll along the sea or make a trip to one for whatever reason, then just spritz this on you and allow yourself to be transported.
this captures sea breeze for me (with a tinge of sweetness).how that was done I really don’t know but though fleeting as some see it,I am more than ok with what I get out of this
Perfect for spring and summer, and clearly a scent for individual enjoyment.a bonus when it draws an inquisitive nose nearer…
Might not be for everyone but I love it for what I get out of it.I no longer live by the coast so this always fills the ‘nostalgic void’.

Nice review Daniela 3 but the perfume will be discontintinous. It is true it doesn’t last very much but when it last is magic!

DANIELA 3 YOU ARE RIGHT BUT I THINK YOU ARE TOO INDULGENT WITH L’ARTISAN IN GENERAL! WHEN YOU PAY SO MUCH FOR A FRAG MINIMUM YOU WANT IT TO LAST SOME HOURS, NICE COMPARISON WITH A WATER COLOR PAINTING BUT I THINK THE FRAGRANCE TOO WATERY ALSO!!!

I know that C.d.A is far from being a loud fragrance,as most of the fragrances by l’Artisan P. I think they regard fragrances as I regard salt (yes!: Na Cl) you can always add it but never do the contrary. Hardly ever they are “shouting” fragrances which last from Monday up to Sunday, although there are many among them (even some E.de.T. such as: Tea for two; Dzongkha; Voleur de rose….. ) with a remarkable persistence [I adore Drole de R. and Jour de F. and
I keep on smelling their beauty on my clothes even after the washing machine!] and not only their “Extreme” version or the E.d.P when existing. There are also some cultural differences among people – thanks God we are not totally globalized! – so while American women expect fragrances to last all day long, French women think differently. My granny used to use the E.d.C for the day and the parfum in the evening.
C.d.A. is like a water-colour painting, it has grace and delicacy; it’s a moment for yourself and some few close friends; it doesn’t have any sillage; if you are looking for a bang!-fragrance that makes turn heads in your direction this is not the one so choose differently… But the composition is not banal at all and it “lasts” though – for me – it’s a quite scent more than a weak one. It is composed by “natural” (not would be so..) ingredients as all the chemicals are ignored and seeing that it’s not possible to employ anymore genuine “animals” (thanks God again!) such as musk, or civet cat and so on in order to fix the fragrance better consequently any fragrance cannot be ever lasting, unless it were helped chemically: it’s a catch 22! I use it in spring or at the very beginning of the summer; today – longing for the sun -in a snowy and cold day I’ve tried it and…it is still present on my skin, in its quiet way. Like salt you can always add/spray it more and more without fear of killing anyone ; )

    Indeed, very weak and shortlasting.
‘Wet wood’ is a proper phrase to describe it, but I also get a strong lemon note that makes me slaver and clench my jaws. Blah!
It might be the mixed accord of other citruses and herbs, but on my skin it turns out as lemon, and I hate lemon in a perfume.
This is the second organic edt from L’Artisan – first one (Jatamansi) did better.

Interesting fragrance. Wet wood indeed. But after that… something light and fresh and sweet. I have to keep smelling it though to find out exactly what it is. Makes me think of freshly washed clothing that’s been blowing in the wind in spring. Something innocent and clean. Not my thing.

I am puzzled by L’Artisan Parfumeur COTE D’AMOUR, which to my nose is a very light and perhaps even too subtle woody fragrance. I smell no rosemary, no grapefruit, and no tangerine–all of which are very familiar and rather assertive notes. Have the aromatics all evaporated away?
Where is the love? Where is the coast? This all-natural edt might convey the love of a carpenter for his saw as it spins in short spurts, but that’s about all. Désolée!

Sad …a little sad for a oneday , great house.

    Well this is very different.
A pity the bottle looks so cheap, and even the name lacks inspiration…a name like ‘Sandpiper,’ or ‘A Stranger On The Shore’ would have been more evocative, for the initial effect is bracing, wild, and a little bit forlorn. If this is the Coast of Love, clearly Love is no tropical Eden.
The rosemary, cypress and salt give an amazing tang, and above all, the overwhelming scent of gorse makes it feel reminiscent of those thirties films where the heroine walks the sand-dunes watching the sea, and above on the cliffs the gulls cry…
All very interesting, until something strange happens. A most peculiar note emerges, which I can only describe as tepid mashed potato, and not even a real potato – that dried stuff people use when they’re too tired to peel!
Clearly the Coast of Love also has its tatty boarding houses with peeling wallpaper and fried breakfasts. And mash.
Um, no, I don’t think so.
