I finally got around to trying this one today and I can understand why people like it as it’s a really pleasing scent!
I find it a rather interesting scent too with the lightly salted sea notes in the background. I won’t be buying just yet though as I have my beloved (and massively underrated) CK2 which although doesn’t quite smell the same, has a similar uplifting & kind of lightly salty, floral vibe imo (plus even if it’s soft CK2 lasts & lasts).
Clinique could look at bringing out an intense/long-lasting version, would make even more people happy 🙂
Edit: Longevity for me wasn’t actually all that bad! But it is quite a soft scent, nice though, this goes on my wish list for next summer.

It may be the most pleasant of all orange-oriented scents, but remains active for about 20-30 minutes. Extremely poor sillage and longevity. What a pity.

Blind bought with Shoppers Optimum points, regretted instantly. Generic synthetic crap. Absolutely blown away by how many people like this cheap garbage.

    Ohmigod, nostalgia!!!
I’d totally forgotten about this cologne until creating my Fragrantica profile and realizing this was one of the first “real” fragrances I ever owned. The year was 2000, I was sixteen years old, and one of my close guy friends wore it. Not so much by choice – his mom had gifted him a bottle for Christmas that he wore on occasion so as not to hurt her feelings, despite not actually liking the stuff.
I remember doing him a favor by “stealing” his bottle so he wouldn’t be forced to wear it anymore. I remember hanging with my other underaged friends at the corner store where he worked, where he’d sell us cigarettes and alcohol. I remember an exhilarating sense of freedom, having graduated high school two years early and spending my time taking road trips up and down the West Coast. I remember warm summer nights at the beach with my closest girl friend, the bright citrus scent mingling with the cool, salty breeze. I remember a beauty review site I was active on, where I discovered how many other women preferred the masculine version of Happy over the original EDP. I even remember driving down to Tijuana thinking I’d be able to buy a bottle much cheaper there, only to discover the cost was exactly the same. (756 pesos.) I remember thinking how perfect the name was.
But mostly I remember how carefree and excited to be alive I felt back then, and this scent has the power to transport me directly back to that time, if only for a moment.
I just placed my order for a new bottle. 🙂

A few spritzes of this and a cup of coffee is my recipe for a fine morning. Makes me think of Takeshi Kitano singing that karaoke song “Rain of Tears” from his infamous Famicom cartridge creation; a dawning sensation. Lovely citrus, unequaled freshness and the underlying cypress adds a masculine touch to this otherwise light, cheerful fragrance.

I did a blind buy, it’s very far from what I understood from comments. for me it’s very similar to Versace Pour Homme so we can say it’s similar to Chanel Allure Homme Sport too. and a little similar to Bvlgari Amara but (thanks God) without that eggy note!
Mandarine+salty sea water that mixed with smooth white flowers.
It’s a good scent, not great not bad, I like it, good for daily use in hot Summer but I need to aplply evary 1.5 -2 hrs.
    7/10

Blind bought this simply because of the simplicity.
Simple orange bottle, simple geometric shape, simple note breakdown.
The initial spray was… is this Versace Eau Fraiche without the starfruit?
A tangy mandarin orange, with a hint of lemon zestiness.
Reminds me of orange Fanta on a hot summer day.
A happy scent, just like the name 🙂

This one surprised me. The smell and longevity is excellent. It’s so perfect for summer, compliments galore, and such an enjoyable citrusy clean sillage. Will always be in my collection. Its name is perfect because it really does put a smile on my face when I catch whiffs throughout the day. Just don’t expect monster sillage. Happy is for those that prefer others to smell them only when coming in close about a foot or so.
IMHO this fragrance is underrated because it’s from Clinique. However, put this juice in a Dior or YSL bottle, or even in a niche such as Creed, and the frag snobs will be fighting for vintage bottles and arguing batch numbers and reformulations based on bottle design lol.
This fragrance was clearly made based on the opinion of women and their perspective on what scent they enjoy on a man. Unquestionably Clinique polled a number of ladies before releasing this magical summery juice.

and am so Happy to write a review of it..
this fragrance is so pure and tangy..
nothing synthetic..right from top to base its so fresh n citrusy..
not much complaints about longetivity..and sillage is so so awesome..
i combined this with a crisp white shirt on a hot summer day..and Wow…
it deserves to be an all round performer..
just trust me .. go for it..best citrus fragrance of all time..

Clinique Happy was my very first perfume.
After some 15 years of collecting and hundreds of perfumes come and go, I think I still feel lonely.
I am writing this surrounded by only perfumes. The people who I love most are gone.
At times, perfumes do feel like my best friends.
I suppose perfumes can make me happy.
But sometimes, I ask myself, “Are you Happy now?”
Dear mom, dad, my only love,.. I miss you so.

This fragrance will help you slow down and find happiness in the smallest moments.Very bright and fresh, a classic aquatic with citrus notes.Safe for every occasion. The projection is good but the lasting power is 3 to 4 hours max on me(I get this with most fresh-airy fragrances).
A very nice subtle fragrance for spring/summer on reasonable price.

Happy is the perfect description. Lively light orange scent like a beautiful summer day. Have tried layering it with Eau de Rhubarbe Ecarlate Hermès and the combination is stupendous!!

  15. :

    Mmmmm… smells like… summer!
First thing I notice upon spraying Happy is a clean, light, sweet mandarin kick, complimented and brightened by tart notes of lemon and lime. There are some hard to define green and floral notes playing in the background, bringing some herbaceous balance to the fruity forefront, and a very well executed aquatic note that thankfully doesn’t get in the way of what is a very uplifting scent.
Like most top-heavy, citrus-forward scents, Happy is no sillage monster, nor will it last for days. But then I think you already knew that. But, unlike many similar scents, Happy does seem to cling very closely for a few hours, thanks in part to a light musk backbone — which like the other supporting notes, is there and noticeable, but never challenges the supremacy of the citrus soul of Happy.
For me — an unapologetic lover of aquatics and citrus fragrances, this is a borderline love for me. It’s not exactly niche, nor is it especially sophisticated, but it just flat smells uplifting and… well, happy. And “she” loves it, too. 🙂

  16. :

    5 out of 5

It doesn’t really stand out and its quite subtle in its smell. But is okay, its nice for those days where you don’t really want to wear a fragrance
It smells quite like manderine with a hint of lemon and some woody notes too. It dont last that long tho. It peaks after one hour where the smell is quite pleasant but quickly after that, it fades out and after 2 hours from spraying, its almost unnoticeable

since my old bottle from 2015 is empty, I just purchased a new bottle yesterday here in manila, philippines. It’s weird because i sprayed it 8am, now its already 9pm and the smell on my shirt is still strong and projecting. so thats more than 12hrs. I wish i was joking but Iam shocked this new bottle lasted this long! maybe its reformulated? not sure, but no bull watsoever it is still on my shirt after a whole day! Wow!

  18. :

I blind bought a 3.4 bottle out of curiosity of how the cypress note might come acoss, which it didn’t…and I’m a sucker for cypress. So kind of a let down. Longevity is short as hell like most others mention. I need to give this another wearing but after an initial sampling, I was left saying..that if I want citrus, I’ll reach for original John Varvaton Artisan.

Watermelon, Fresh cut grass, with some citrus.
This and cool water are what you think of when you imagine ‘cologne guy’ at the gym.
It is fresh and clean smelling however, and the guy who wears this will usually be well groomed and neat. Also the ladies seem to like it…

I’m from the Philippines in South east Asia. We suffer a 38°Celsius heat in summer and an obviously cooler of 19-25°C starting December to February. I must say this perfume is a bomb for me. Very nice citrusy scent which I loved and so those people from public places like in Jeepney, Trains and inside the malls. Girls and Straight guys will turn head upon smelling it.
*Kahit nga yung mga tunay na lalaki sa Jeep parang gusto ko kang kainin eh.

Somehow energizing and relaxing at the same time. Bright delicious orange, aquatic, and a hint of cedar. Best for summer, I’d say fits practically any occasion.

  23. :

The orange freshness in this one is very high quality. This is one of my favorite summer scents. Just longevity is pretty poor. Women love this on a man.

    Silage: 6/10

This fragrance gives justice to orange more than what real orange fruits have done in history. Clinique Happy for Men is the scent of the color orange in its most “nose-friendly” state. Clean and fresh. Very uplifting. And just happy.
While others say that this is a very feminine scent, I think that at the depth of this fragrance still lies a kind of masculinity—the metrosexual type. When I smell this on a woman, I’d think she’s wearing a unisex fragrance. But when I smell this on a man, I’d still think he’s wearing a man’s fragrance. Only, I get the impression that this guy is very clean, very neat. Probably very organized, too.
Based on my body chemistry, Clinique Happy for Men doesn’t last long enough. Just four to five hours on clothes. Three hours or less on skin, particularly the wrists and the back of the ears. I found out, though, that it lasts longer if you apply it on the crook of your elbow—five hours or more. Sometimes overnight even. Depending on the environment. On some of my friends, it lasts longer. “All day,” they said.
As for sillage, I think it’s a cross between moderate and heavy. Which means it could project beyond an arm’s length but not within six feet. Why do I say so? Whenever I take a walk in high-end places, I always come across three to six people—men and women alike—wearing this fragrance. There was a time when my nose registered this unmistakable scent radiating from someone who just passed by, and he was more than an arm’s length away. And my instinct is reliable when it comes to finding out who among the crowd is wearing which fragrance. The guy looked so clean. And happy.
That time, I’m sure it wasn’t my scent that I smelled because I don’t use this cologne outdoors. I use it only at home when I need some uplifting vibe. I’m the kind who usually sticks to what my signature is. And the last thing I want to be is to become the seventh guy wearing this fragrance on a regular day. But I still recommend this to anyone who wants to smell fresh from a shower. They say it performs well. In high heat. It blends perfectly with sweat, too.

I love this perfume as a smell, I hate this perfume because it fades out very fast.
    Scent 4.5/5

    Longevity 0.5/5
    Offensive NO

    Scent : Excellent
    Longevity : Poor
    Sillage : Moderate to poor
Is there any possibility for a reformulation to make this one better in both longevity and sillage?

Smells just like summer, watermelon, oranges and fresh cut grass, I was shocked to find out there is no watermelon scent in it at all, I was also shocked to see none of the reviews mention it either, the hells wrong with my nose??…. so fresh, so clean, uplifting, very bright and energetic scent. Great for summer.

  28. :

    4 out of 5

It has better result on cloths. Light, nonoffensive, low projection, good for summer&fall seasons. Longivity is low, i have to spray it twice a day. On my skin it has low performance and after some hours it turns to bad smell like fart!

    female wearer.
the accords are exact I think, I tried this today after several years of not owning it.
there’s not a sweet or flowery citrus in sight, definitely a male sort, I find it so fresh and lovely, the way it has the citrus fresh edge that is not deodorant or minty.
its not heavy and earthy (though I like those), such a nice change from the sweeties.
I have on also: happy heart, and happy (women’s). I like the mens version more than the womans, and I chose this in a time when I hated anything mens on me.
happy heart is like a sweet white violet floral, wit the ‘happy’ genes. happy has some kind of fuzzy musk tone, I don’t mind that once the initial spritz has worn off.

    * These are my personal experiences/thoughts with this fragrance. Yours/others may differ. *
    Initial – orange + lime + lemon + aquatic
Drydown – orange + lily of the valley + cypress + cedar
    Duration – 5-6 hours
    Projection – moderate
Experiences – Better projection than the women’s version, although soapier and bit more masculine. Nice and vibrant and best suited for warmer temperatures. The citrus notes are a bit sharp to my nose in cooler weather.
Quick Thoughts – unisex, bright, refreshing, orange, clean

This is the perfect blend of sweet and citrus, while not being over bearing. I had this juice for the longest and decided to sport him for the day. I had many compliments, even from the sales woman in Macy’s where I purchased this years ago. This is definitely an old faithful clutch shooter.

  32. :

    4 out of 5

Love it; its sweet without being sickly and citrusy without being oily.
I find 90% high street fragrances smell like cheap deodorant. This is something more sophisticated.
It is true though, the longevity is poor, and although the company denies it, I think it has got worse in this respect,

  33. :

    4 out of 5

This is my absolute favourite men’s cologne. It is hard to find though unless you buy new. Citrusy and clean. I get tons of compliments. Nothing better on me. I just love it. Moderate longevity. Amazing scent. If I had to just chose 1 cologne for the rest of my life this is it.

i guess opinion differs in every region and country.
I live in a tropical country on south east asia. This fragrance smells so good and performs well.
    * i love the orange musk scent it feels very comforting.
This is something I wear when im wearing when I feel sick or tired.
    * hypo allergenic same as other clinique product I’d recommend it to someone with sensitive nose

I feel bad for the reviewer below. yes, Clinique’s Happy is garbage, but thankfully it only lasts 15 minutes. i have to lol at all youtube reviewers and actually all of them here, they’re pointless, absolutely pointless, including mine. what some random person thinks about a fragrance on their skin is meaningless, it’s just their opinion. obviously i hate this frag, it’s one of the most synthetic men’s cologne’s i’ve ever tried, just terrible.

  36. :

    5 out of 5

This garbage smells like bug spray, I bought it based off of a review and it was a huge mistake. I don’t smell orange at all and it lasts maybe 30 minutes on my skin. 2/10 for me

  37. :

One thing I’ve realised about Fragrantica is that you can go on the page of any mediocre fragrance, and there will be a gang of reviews about how it’s the greatest thing they’ve ever smelt. Try it! You’ll see for yourself.
This is a great example.. I am totally perplexed by the comments of people saying how it is the greatest mens fragrance ever created. It is a VERY average, bland, poor performing, citrus scent.
Lesson to be learnt is.. take reviews on this site with a pinch of salt, and never blind buy due to what people say on here.. because you could bottle urine and there would be still be 10 reviewers saying how it’s Gods breath in a bottle.

  38. :

    EDIT:
So on me, this comes off as very feminine and I don’t like wearing it. However a coworker of mine always smells great and one day I asked him what he was wearing, and he said Clinique Happy. I was shocked and it made me think differently about this fragrance because I really like it on him. It’s fresh and inoffensive.

  39. :

Probably the greatest Cologne scent for men ever created. Just so unique and amazing, it stands alone, (Although I realize Original Fahrenheit holds it own). This is the one cologne you can wear to a wedding, new years eve outing, work, or a day on the beach or water. There’s simply no substitute for Happy in the world!!!!!
Longevity is always 4-6 hours, of course I still buy it from Macy’s or Bloomingdale’s. If you’re buying it off Ebay, or Amazon, any other sellers besides fragrancenet, or fragrance, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Burlington, or an individual selling one bottle from Macy’s they were gifted, I’d be worried about getting a fake and the longevity will not be as good.
All others copy this scent, if you were around when this originally was released, you’ll know that this doesn’t remind you of Anything. Perhaps new releases remind you of Happy, but not the other way around. This scent was as original, unique, thought provoking, and simply amazing as they ever come.

  40. :

This is a fresh, clean, citrus scent perfect for any occasion. The scent doesn’t last long on me 3 hours tops and the smell is gone completely. Despite the weak longevity it’s still one of my favorites because of all the memories I have with it.

I love this, and am going to buy mesen a bottle unless anyone can recommend a similar one that lasts a bit longer. But there is a specific element that makes it just-so. I got a decided melon and sea thing from it. Everyone else says otherwise tho, but what the hell do people here know anyway – it’s not exactly Basenotes or University Challenge here is it.
It’s just joyous and aptly-named. It could only be more aptly named if it was called Salty Melons. Or Melons of the Ocean.

    Heck, blind buy it.
You can never hate this fragrance.

I tried Happy in a high street store and whilst I liked the fresh aquatic/citric hit, on the sample card it faded away within an hour or so. The reviews here were ambivalent and ‘Pour Monsieur’ rated it 2/10, so I moved on.
Two months on, I was sent a Clinique men’s sample selection with my order of Clinique deodorant (highly recommended btw) with a 4ml spray of Happy.
So, I got around to trying out the Happy tester on my skin. Holy moly, it’s awesome. It’s definitely aquatic and citrus with mandarin orange to the fore in the initial hit. Its heart notes occupy a space somewhere between Versace Pour Homme, Cerruti 1881 and Hermes.
In short, I find it absolutely gorgeous! It just goes to prove that you have to try fragrances on your skin and card testers instore are no substitute.

If only this comes in a better SPL, i would not hesitate to make this my signature..
i mean, this is a citrus category, true, and already done so many times, that’s also true.. but unlike any other citrus scents, this has a depth that not many other citrus scents have.
i would call it a citrus floral if that’s makes sense..
really, happy to have this in my collection.. if only it would made in a better performance..

Orangey, soft, fresh cologne that’s perfect for a warm summer or spring day. Pretty good for a juice that came out in 1999.
The longevity and sillage aren’t anything that extraordinary. Still, worth it if you’re looking for a light, inoffensive sprayer for lounging by the pool under a clear blue sky. The marine and mandarin notes really do make you feel ‘happy’…
    Rating: 8/10

  60. :

    5 out of 5

Citrus burst at the beginning, particularly Mandarin Orange. Quite sweet and candy-like. Then dries down to a creamy, floral, woody base. Quite similar to ADG but ADG uses lime notes instead of oranges but the heart and base share a similar vibe.
Since Happy has been in the market for quite a while, many fragrances may have already cloned the scent. So this will not stand out as unique. Still pleasant though.
And yeah, as many others have said, longevity sucks big time. You cannot overspray this since the scent is just fleeting.

And finally, I found an identical scent with the 1/4 of the price and good longevity to replace my Clinique! If you want a Clinique Happy with better performance and lower price, search for Uniquesunny for men La Vie (french creation) by DILIS, a belarussian brand. Same vibe, same freshness, stronger projection and 4 hours of longevity on my skin. From the original Clinique I get only 30-40 minutes max and by overspraying, about 1 hour. Dilis perfumes exist in Fragrantica database but Uniquesunny doesn’t. It cost here 1000 rubles for 100 ml, about 15 US dollars.
    Top Notes
lime, green notes, mandarin, citrus, sea water
    Middle Notes
freesia, jasmine, lily of the valley, rose
    Base Notes
    cypress, musk, guaiac wood, cedar
There is also a resemblance with Admiral Blue Blood Sergio Nero, which has better performance, but they are not identical.

one of my favorite summer fragrances. So simple, so juicy and fresh, makes you feel so refreshed and clean. This has no longevity and you have to put a lot on but so be it.
Light and airy with the focus being citrus, sweet but sweet as a honeysuckle would be. I liken it to a citrus summer drink that has seltzer in it. A touch green and the dry down stays the same, maybe some very simple woods or musk involved but it is mininaml.
This is a fragrance i can wear over and over for days at a time which is no small feat. I have well over 100 fragrances and I feel the need to rotate through them all. You will get compliments and you will not overpower nor offend those around you. I love powerhouse fragrances but for whatever reason my summer faves are all light and ones you really need to apply a lot of (happy, paul smith man, pleasures to name a few) As essential to my summer wardrobe as an aresnal of vibrant tommy bahama polos. If you already havent, head to your local department strore and try this. Highly recommended.

Smells gorgeous on men, pale skinned or very dark skinned were my examples. Perhaps the melatonin? Might play s role in this..
I chose this over the women’s version when younger, but now I can’t wear it, chemistry has changed too much I guess.
Fine, I remember it being citrus, mindariny, not too overpowering, delicious

I bought 2 bottles. Using 1 now and 1 for storing in case they stop selling.
Too bored with the hype of Creed, I’m back to my favorite one.

I used to wear this when I was utterly lost and depressed, dousing myself in it’s synthetic orangeness in an attempt to convince myself that things weren’t really as bad as they were. It was nice, the best thing about my life at the time, but how can I wear it now? Scents have memories. Trust me to pick a happy, youthful, optimistic scent for such hopeless times. Oh well.

It’s got a nice sweet delicious orange-y opening that quickly becomes aquatic. The orange is either amazingly short lived or my olfactory senses quickly become inured to it’s charms.
There really is something quite remarkable and unique about the opening, maybe best used as an attention grabber, just before: entering a meeting, getting into the car with your date. Make your very likable and agreeable point, then move on.
Any way you slice it (get it? “slice it”), for all intents and purposes, it’s essentially an aquatic.

Lightly sweet mandarin orange and green notes and a touch of aqua. Not a lot to say, but that juicy, fresh opening burst is Happy’s highlight, before it tapers off fast. Those elusive green/aqua/orange wafts during drydown are great though – really fresh and clean – perfect for really hot daytime weather. A little cheaper than it’s close cousin Hermes Orange Vert. Similarly lousy longevity, but that kinda goes with the territory on this style of scent – it’s an orangy eau de cologne in the traditional “Cologne Wasser” sense, so it’s meant to be more of a refresher than anything, which it does well. It really is an uplifting, fun and yes, happy scent. I like it, but would probably stick with 4711 (for the lower price) and/or Versace Eau Fraiche (it’s longer lasting) in the future, although, who knows? Maybe next summer that addictive green orange note will call me back for another bottle. I won’t say no.

Well, the label doesnt really lie – happy, happy, happy extremely soapy mandarin! really fun to wear, but the longevity is bad though.
good for fun summer morning outings

I give the samples of perfume for men I’m given to my dad sometimes. He’s picky, doesn’t like the “strong” ones. Well, he loved this! He told me he likes the orange in it.

Citrus aquatic. I smell a hint of orange, a tiny bit of grapefruit and some sort of fresh, aquatic scent. Unfortunately, it’s so soft and fleeting, that even dousing myself in it makes very little difference. This would be a very nice fragrance if it had any sort of longevity.
    ** Update **
Layering this with Demeter Pineapple produces a very nice scent, obviously adding to the citrus considerably. Since the Pineapple is so strong, I put it on first and it does extend the life of the Clinique fragrance, although as it dries down a bit, the pineapple does shine through again, although slightly subdued.

Incredibly short on longevity, smells good though

gorgeous fragrance with mediocre longevity and sillage

It’s fresh, citrusy and airy. It smells rather good but to me the drydown has, what I can best describe as a pharmaceutical note, and I’m not a big fan of that particular smell. Apart from that it is definitely a nice and clean scent.

Visiting LA I was looking for a more summery attuned fragrance, and came across this. It holds notes of ocean, musk and sweet citrus fruits. The latter might not be a typical note for male fragrances, certainly not the predominant one as it is here. But it works. It produces a clean, citrus-sweet but sharp smell. It certainly strikes me as a summer smell, whereas a lot of male fragrances have cooler grassy notes.
Soft but masculine. It is one of those nice fragrances for the male market that does not seek to overpower you with its macho characteristic, which otherwise can thus prove kind of obtuse and cliche / samey.

Bought this one just based on reviews, was looking for a scent that will do well in my country’s weather and decided to go for this one.
When I first tried it, it felt very strong and synthetic. I felt that I would regret buying it as it was like orange air freshener sprayed directly to my nose. Anyway, I went out to visit my friends and got nothing else but “Wow, you smell nice,” and this happens anywhere I go. Maybe I’m not just really a fan of citrus, but they love it anyway so might as well finish this one. Not sure if I would buy it again, though. It doesn’t last long for me but it’s kinda calming once you get used to it.

Hot summer days, citrus and Happy.
Orange, lemon, hint of lime and a touch of musk.
Bery nice during summer. White crispy shirt with rolled up sleeves, khaki shorts and leather sandals.
I love it and keep coming back year after year.
Lately I buy the deo spray and use it on arms and chest. Its even more citrus fresh and less musky than the cologne. But I can only find it at the Clinique counters.
    Summer in a bottle.

I used to love cologne, but over the years I became very sensitive to smells and gave away my entire cologne. They gave me headaches and made me sneeze. Also I prefer a nice smell with no added fragrance and I want to smell nice for me. If you can smell me before I get there then I am wearing too much smell.
Clinique Happy for Men is one of the very few colognes I can tolerate and picked up a bottle today. I do love the smell. It’s not loud and people who do notice simply think I smell good. When you wear it you may think that just because you don’t fill the room with your stink that it’s not working. It is. It’s subtle.
I love to spray this on my sheets.
I have had bad reactions to all kinds of skincare products and came back to the entire Clinique line. I love Clinique and I love happy.

Happy is definitely the word for this cologne. It’s an instant facelift. One of the best summ
