Not what I expected… It’s like eating a delicious raspberry dessert in the garden as someone paints the fence with creosote next to you.
I like it actually but I have to say that I’m pretty disappointed in life with leather notes, you seem to either have the suede note which is fine with me or the leather note that smells like creosote or saffraleine types that smell more like new car. So far I can’t seem to find a good leather note like an actual leather shop!
This smells of creosote, raspberries with a hint of juniper and grapefruit on me, it’s nice and grows on me but not very saffron-y considering the name and I’d pass on a full bottle…

One of my first real forays into independent perfume – this was one of the ones I tested in the shop and liked the smell. Been given a 2ml sample but not worn for a full day yet (will update as and when).
A sort of sideways, really-quite-sweet take on South Asian spices. To me it smells a bit like someone made a curry with fruit and it turned out to be a delicacy. So far I like it, and it’s nice for the season (September-October) as well.

Ok so to my nose this smells like a female version of Tuscan Leather.
This just doesnt work on my skin. I think you have to be a very femenine woman to wear this correcrly. It can be very polarizing.

To me this smells almost identical to Solstice Scents Black Forest. Except the Byredo has Iso E Super. (So far that seems to be a major note in all the Byredos I’ve tried.) So if you want Black Saffron without the ol’ Iso-E, try SS Black Forest!

To my nose Tuscan Leather by Tom Ford is more a leather/raspberry fragrance, while Black Saffron is more a cashmeran/leather/violet fragrance and reminds me of a Montale kind of scent, let’s say Leather Aoud.
Of course the Tom Ford one is not as synthetic as the Byredo and the Montale.
I have tried several Byredo fragrances, liked a few, bought one.
I wouldn’t say Byredo is niche, the ingredients are too often synthetic for that.
I think Black Saffron might be better worn by a woman than a man, it doesn’t last much even though it’s a bit loud.

I found a niche’ house that does a reformulation of Blk Saff that is spot on to Byredo’s…The price difference here is the swing vote….I have never had someone come up to me and say “you smell great, how much did you pay for that”? No ego to worry about here, if I smell good, I smell good, I don’t care if Howdy Doody makes it…

Basically Tom Ford Tuscan Leather + Black Orchid, mixed and diluted into a much weaker solution, repackaged with minimalist design and a fat price tag for niche cred… and that’s all she wrote.
Personally still I liked it a lot, but raised an eyebrow at how feeble the performance is (it scrunches right down to skin scent only in under 3h on me) and how much less sumptuous it was than I was expecting. Maybe the name and the notes listed here were misleading me, but I was braced for something rich, deep, dark, velvety sexy, etc etc etc – full of really lush spice and on the edge of being overbearing. Instead it’s just a rather nice, rounded, feminine fruity-floral suede – almost girlish, rather than womanly. Didn’t get any juniper at all, and saffron only really detectable if I snorted and sniffed and deep-inhaled from a few millimetres above the skin. Tuscan Leather Lite for Ladies, maybe.
It’s perfectly OK – it won’t scare anyone, or repel anyone, or lose you any friends. But mein gott, from the way people talk about this one I was expecting a complete showstopper. This is just a warm, friendly, discreet chat with a classy friend, not the exotic adventure I’d hoped for.
Given the floral-ness I am not sure how comfortable male wearers would be with it, but none should be deterred from trying – it doesn’t scream “diva!”. In fact it doesn’t scream anything, that’s my problem with it, it just sings under its breath, kind of.

I am sorry, but this is a negative review; judging by most of the comments here, this won’t be popular. It may help somebody though, so I am going to upload it anyway. My apologies to those people who love it – this is purely subjective, of course.
Testing from two sprays to the back of my right hand, from an official sample kindly sent me by Indigo to cheer me up. (Thank you, my lovely.)
I’m listing the notes below, as they are slightly different on Byredo’s website. I checked, because I seem to be smelling something which isn’t listed.
    Top: Juniper berries, pomelo, saffron
Middle/heart: Accord cuir, black violet, cristal rose
    Base: Blonde woods, raspberry, vetiver
The INSTANT I spritzed this, I smelled violets. I didn’t even need to look at the notes. Violet is dominant on my skin and – unfortunately for me – it’s the smell of Parma Violets, saccharin-sweet and powdery. For anyone who isn’t of a certain age and from the UK, I’ll clarify: Parma Violets were horrible, chalky, violet-flavoured “sweets” which were (still are?) available in the UK in the 60s/70s.
My dislike of Parma Violet sweets immediately predisposed me to dislike Black Saffron; I know that’s unreasonable of me, so I’ve let it dry down to give it a chance.
Even on drydown, the dominant note wafting up from my hand is violets. Bringing my hand closer to my nose reveals a sweet fruity scent – watermelon? It’s raspberry of course, but I don’t think I could have identified it as that without reading the notes. I’m also picking up on a (unlisted) slightly aquatic note, which – unfortunately – I don’t like, either. Calone is it?
Sniffing with nose close to my skin, I can smell a sweetened leather, saffron and little else. There are some beautifully blended perfumes with leather notes which I love: Fan de Fendi and Cartier La Panthere, for example. But two I can’t stomach are Cabochard Gres and L’Artisan’s Skin on Skin.
Whilst I don’t find Black Saffron as disagreeable as the last two perfumes I mentioned, I don’t like it; to me – the notes are really jangly and discordant. Admittedly, BS and I got off on the wrong foot as soon as I smelled the Parma Violets, but… the notes just don’t work together. BS feels like a jigsaw puzzle which has been put together all wrong – it feel like someone’s decided that THIS bit goes THERE and jammed things in without checking elsewhere for a better fit. Ironically, the blurb accompanying the perfume on Byredo’s website says: “Black Saffron is a fragrance inspired by this very idea of sublime unity.”
Black Saffron is definitely NOT a safe blind buy (and you’d be mad to buy without testing, at £105 sterling for 50ml).

I’ve never smelled anything quite like it. I love it! The best thing about it is it manages to do dark notes in a very light way.
There are fresh and floral-fruity notes paired with peppery and leather notes. The whole thing comes across as cold, clinical and austere. The leather isn’t dirty. It is also NOT “non-sweet”…
I think it is very modern (in a few decades we’ll call it dated!) And minimalist. Very Swedish. Meticulously crafted. The perfume equivalent of high-end Scandanavian design.
For all its palatable high notes, this has a deep base. It is black (like peppercorns) not red (like saffron), even though I know saffron is the key ingredient! The raspberry is nothing foody, and isn’t all that obvious to me. There’s a slight bitter twist – juniper and vetiver.
I think it is very approachable…. And unique.

Black Saffron is an aromatic suede. This is a very elegant fragrance. The presence leans heavily towards the feminine side, but the beautiful aromatic blend has such a distinct quality of stimulation and comfort to it! I could easily see this fragrance being in some man’s private collection at home.
Black Saffron opens up with a sweet combination of raspberry, suede, and saffron; with a seductive cashmeran—that has more of a silky or lace-like quality to it. The backdrop is a very well-blended set of fresh notes, that seemingly provide the perfect lift for the body.
It’s an amazingly comfortable feminine embrace. It feels like a woman throwing her arms over your back, and the smell of her feminity falls over you; totally enrapturing you in the comfort of her presence and affection.
The vibrancy here promotes a high energy feeling, and gives me a feeling of the outdoors and the Autumn season (with the sweet leaves in the air—and the fresh, chilly breeze through the trees).
I’ve sampled Tuscan Leather as well, and I can honestly say that Black Saffron is the perfected version of it. It has everything a woman loves—without any question to its perfection.
All the glow—and stimulation that just triggers instant perfection to a woman’s senses. Definitely a masterpiece fragrance—and easily worth every penny. Black Saffron for all the best qualities that define a high-class perfume. This would be like the perfect gift for the woman of your desire, as all of the good feelings that this invokes for her could be sure to make her go crazy for you.

I didn’t think of saffron or anything black to be quite honest whiffing this.
I don’t like or dislike this, I sampled this with Byredo Pulp and I felt that Pulp easily had more going for it than this

No idea why this is called black saffron or is considered to be unisex. Strong, and unnaturally sweet, raspberry with the tiniest hint of leather is all I got for the best part of 8 hours. Good performance, if a bit linear, overtly feminine and absolutely no sign of anything black or saffron related here.

It starts sweet and dries to some odd cucumber-leather scent. Doesn’t smell like Tuscan Leather to me at all, except for the fact they both have a “leather” note. Perhaps, I would have liked this one more, but that industrial cucumber note gives it an air freshener vibe.

One of the giant pile of samples I got at a meetup – A good chance to try things I normally wouldnt go for.
Black Saffron opens with a juicy burst of raspberries that screams ‘department store generic’ to my nose. Then the leather/suede swiftly comes to the fore and lingers around a bit. Its quite clean and pleasant at this stage. Doesn’t seem to project – I am wearing it but I can’t smell it on me unless I put my nose to my arm.
Kind of fluffy and soft and warm. Which is nice.
    Just nice.
    Pleasant.
    Not at all compelling.
Only reaffirming my opinion that Byredo is the niche Basic – entry level, overpriced, nice enough packaging to gain a cult following, but ultimately disappointing. I am yet to find one that feels special.

This is Oud Saphir without the burnt ash or smokiness from the birch. It’s a great fragrance. Had I known about this one, I may have bought it instead of Oud Saphir, which is one of my favorites, just to avoid the ashy note that comes and goes with the OS. When I use up my OS, I will replace it with this.
This is a good leather for the summer, too, being light enough on the leather and with the added sweetness. Just imagine a snow cone in a leather cup.

Saffron is a spice. Saffron is a color. Saffron is a way of life. Black Saffron pays tribute to the many facets of saffron, weaving a spell of a spice symbolic of Iran and India. A vibrant citrus opening belies the deeper heart of the perfume. The aroma of saffron starts to wrap around you like holy robes, earthy and unmistakable. A dewy rose emerges, tickling your nose with a soft sweetness. Then, there it is, the surprise of leather nestled among the woods and vetiver. At once ancient and modern, Black Saffron brings all the traditions of the Persia alive while winking at you from the seat of a sleek motorcycle.
Byredo founder Ben Gorham, who was raised in India, worked with perfumer Jerome Epinette to create this homage to the holy spice that has become a symbol of Iran and India.

Won’t be the first one who says that it does have a very similar leather accord as it is in Tuscan Leather. Black Saffron starts with leather and rasberry. Very sweet at the beginning, right at the border of too sweet. This was a fragnance that I decided I have to have after the first sniff – it does make an impression. The sweetness fades away, but sadly so does the leather and for some reason I can feel saffron only after that happens. However, the more I wear it, the more I am amazed how different Black Saffron can be: one day it feels like leather in syrup, another day it is like baget with rasberry jem and than it could turn to ashtray (good one if that makes sense).
Good fragnance, I would say great but honestly expected a better longetivity and sillage for money I paid.
    Longetivity 6/10
    Sillage 5/10
Edit June 2018: maybe it needed a little more time to “get in shape” but
    Longetivity 8/10

    Im struggling to like this.
On paper I loved the smell it smelt very “bossy” leathery and musky with a touch of fruit.
On my skin it has that horrible bad breath smell that is in Versace bright crystal.
I guess its the raspberry or the crystal rose(note not listed.) But i really hate it.
Its starting to diminish under the smell of leather but hasn’t dissapoeared. So I’m left with it smelling like a smoker with halitosis.

Berries, leather, saffron and violet – this opened on my skin with a rounded dark and juicy blast and quickly the saffron and leather took this scent from juicy to sweaty and I absolutely loved it. Not getting the clean connotations at all unless that’s the violet lending some of its notorious floral acuity perhaps? I’ve not yet smelled anything so unapologetically sweaty whilst remaining simultaneously alluring. Think I may need to sample again, could become a love.

I feel this is closer to Amouroud Safran Rare than TF Tuscan Leather because the saffron note is very prominent in here and Amouroud, while TF is more on its leather side.

  28. :

Very heavy and overpowering. The first 30 mins almost make me feel carsick.
But then it settles down and becomes a wonderful scent. To me this is almost narcotic.

  29. :

Immediately reminiscent of Tom Ford Tuscan Leather, Byredo Black Saffron is sort of a more saffron- and herbal-leaning take on Tuscan Leather.
It has many of same characteristic notes, not the least of which is the pairing of raspberry and suede.
Performance is decent, consistent with other more cold-weather-leaning Byredos.
I’m not the biggest fan of Tuscan Leather (I haven’t deemed it or PDM Godolphin to be full-bottle-worthy) but it’s certainly superior to Black Saffron, so those looking for a slightly cheaper clone should look elsewhere, but those looking for a twist on TL might enjoy this more.

As You spray this perfume you will get hit by juicy smell of berries and grapefruit with hint of saffron and this is very comforting opening which is quite easy on your nose . This opening will stay with you for few minutes and then sweetness will die down and leather will start peeping through and this is not a harsh leather like Roja dove fettish or MDO cuir however more suede leather in the mold of safari extreme by asaq however touch more feminine .
As the perfume starts growing this becomes more uplifting and comforting scent which makes you feel like you are wearing fine leather jacket however this jacket Is more suited on my wife then on me and I would like to take her on a long drive while she wears this jacket .
This is a very very interesting take on leather note and if you perfume connoisseur then this is a must try and if you are modern woman with edgy personality then I highly recommend you trying this perfume and may be falling in love with this fragrance . Projection of this fragrance is around 6 hours and scent cloud is close to your skin however someone will notice when they come close to you . This is also quite versatile as this can be worn all through out the year imo . 8/10

Now you’re talking This is a great scent. I would describe it as the feminine version of Tom Ford’s Tuscan Leather. Much more fruit in this one. Think of lots of sweet sugary raspberries against a background of smooth leather and suede. This one is a keeper…glorious!

Powdery and fruity on the drydown, pleasant and narcotic, has a note within that smells like something illegal-cocaine. Not an accord typically found in perfume, and not in the hundreds I own! It’s not overly feminine nor masculine, and while it is extremely unique in a sense, not a love love must purchase scent. Am currently wearing la tulipe which is a much preferred fresh flower shop scent.

Black Saffron was the first leather themed fragrance I ever enjoyed.
    It is so peculiar.
This smells like a goth guy, I was dying when I first tried it!
It’s like a leather jacket and cold, night-time air. This literally smells like the sweet smoke from a clove when it gets absorbed into someone’s hair. It’s like smoke break at the goth club and you’re all huddling together in front of the door with freezing fingers, and someone has boozy cherry schnapps still on their breath.
It feels like it’s time to go reapply my black lipstick.
When you finally get home at four in the morning, your clothes smell like last night’s shenanigans. Glorious.

    @ fillifelle
I agree with you that the byredo range is weak and over priced, thats my experience with it too.
But I disagree completely about avoiding to write bad reviews, it’s as important as writing good reviews in my opinion, if not even more important.
In science this is a form of bias when you only share positive experience and disregard negative ones; by sharing the bad experience you are helping others avoid the same mistakes. It’s very seldom people will give you ratings for sharing bad reviews, but that’s a problem for those caring for the balloons.
But of course I’m talking about subjective bad reviews, not the natural hater ones

I seldom ever write bad reviews because I’m the kind that rather not write anything at all in that case. Can’t be bothered to pick up the proverbial pen, so to speak.
But this is a synthetic screechy raspberry accord upfront and is utterly relentless. My first scrubber. And I don’t ever scrub! I’m just not impressed by the Byredo range in general and I’m so put off by this I can safely say I won’t be testing anymore from this company.

The name really captivated me: it made me envision a dark an mysterious scent. Well, the scent is not like that. It’s a – grant you – beautiful red fruit- raspberry – on a base that compliments the scent, but…it’s not what the name conjures…The name somehow “announces” something and delivers something very different, much more airy and subtle than the expectation…

Black Saffron has a very low-key leather vibe. Comparisons to Tuscan Leather are a bit overblown because Black Saffron never becomes smokey or heavy.
However, there is one interesting and very attractive Tuscan Leather similarity in Black Saffron. Black Saffron manages to capture that magical first 10-15 seconds of Tuscan Leather and extend it out over the life of the fragrance, albeit in a less intense manner. And be warned: after 30 minutes this is a skin scent… But ohhh what a beautiful skin scent if you are in love with Tuscan Leather’s initial (sometimes infamous) opening.
I have to vote this as a love, but I’m not sure I’d every pursue a full bottle because of how linear and close-to-the-skin the scent is.

This was like my old grandma´s soap to me. Maybe It´s to feminine for my taste. A defo no for me, longivity is very good though. Needed two showers to get rid of this.

This is gorgeous ..very similar to Tom Ford’s Tuscan Leather but softer and more feminine. I really like this!

I liked this perfume, which did not have any staying power on me, no did it project on any distance from me. I am surprised at the comments that say they could not wash it off themselves. It has a pleasant saffron leather smell, nothing oustanding, not like other leather smells. It lasted less than 2 hours on me. This is one of the scent I like in Byredo line, I don’t get indolic note here. The other one I am interested is Tulips, but I have not found it in person yet. You need to love cashmeran note, if you think of this perfume.

Raspberry, leather, and saffron? Gee, where have I smelled that before…..?

This smells like saffron without the honeyed note! I get a lot of soft leather with fruity and dry floral notes. It’s subtle, pleasant and sophisticated, overall a good perfume, but not special enough for the byredo price point.

feces? i wish i got something that interesting. there is something odd/funky to my nose in the opening, but it settles down within an hour. no saffron outside of the opening, just kind of a meh sweet, bath and body works kind of a dry down. considering byredo tends to do some interesting scents, this was a pretty boring and generic scent.

Confusing that some people dont think this smells anything like Tuscan Leather. I agree with a lot of the others in that this is basically the not as manly version of TL if you will.
TL is a lot more powerful, thick, smokey, and potentially ashy and even off putting if youre vibe isnt right I think. And as that fragrance dries down(which takes a long time)then you get more of the raspberry and feminine aspects as they come more into play.
This is much more juicy, fruity, sugary and maybe even a bit berry fizzyness sorta at the top. Maybe as if almost you drenched some leather in some sorta of sugary berry juice, and you can still smell the bubbles and fizz at first.
Might get some hate for it, but im tempted to say I like this more than TL. Its more likeable I think in general to those around you. Where as again TL is more of a vibe when you wear it. But then again that being said, sometimes having a fragrance for a specific vibe youre feeling on somedays is fun in its own right eh?
Performance was good. If I didnt already have TL I might get this, and as said before I might even like this more actually. Ill have to wear it more to decide.

Incredibly dirty – like a fresh, warm, steaming pile of feces. A nasty leather that barely shows the saffron two hours later. I was suffering from seasonal allergies when I tried it and the dry down wasn’t unpleasant. Not to be judgmental (I do like the scent of skunk spray, which may sound strange – my mother liked it, too. DNA?), but this is not a scent I’d care to smell on anyone. I do give Byredo points for bravery, or is it audacity?
