Description

L`Air du Desert Marocain was made as a lighter version of Andy’s previous Le Maroc Pour Elle. One of the most popular in the line. The fragrance is composed of spicy oriental notes, inspired by Saharan desert in the moonlight, a Moroccan night.

The top is combined of coriander, cumin with a hint of petitgrain. The heart features rock rose and jasmine. The base includes cedar, vetiver and ambergris. 02 L’Air du Desert Marocain was launched in 2005. The nose behind this fragrance is Andy Tauer.

This is a seductive but sort of dry (as in desert winds) fragrance. I quite like it but im not sure I LOVE it. Thats subjective, and in fact its growing on me. There is a lot of cedar and a hint of vanilla. It becomes drier and what some are calling harsher. But the harsh is very masculine and Ive noticed smells different depending on who is wearing it. SO try this one first. It works on me I think, and the harsh note, which has amber and vetiver, and im guessing the rock rose…. and then later one notices the jasmine and lavender. Not much lavender actually. But cutting across all of it is this very nice cedar note. It does, as someone said, smell like a rug shop in Rabat. Its that souk smell that is so captivating. Its definitely a man’s fragrance I think. Its not carnal or animal sexy, and its not a dignified Saville Row scent. Its exotic but not heavy. And perhaps more for a man in his 30s and 40s. Or older depending. Not a classic I dont think, but its very very captivating all the same. Longevity is good…..projection is decent, but its not meant to be a loud scent. Good stuff and I find myself returning to it more than I might have thought.

Have you ever been in a Persian rug shop? Have you ever visited an ancient mosque? Andy Tauer brought me back. It is not a simple shop smell but a work full of spicy and woody smells (merit of coriander and cumin). It is a scent that gives an infinite desire to isolate yourself from the world, to prostrate yourself among the sand dunes, to find your own inner oasis. Yes, it’s really commendable.
    Analysis: 9/10

Not a review just reporting on a comment i received while wearing this. Was in the post office sending off some frags when a guy asks ‘Whats that your wearing?’ I reply Tauer LDDM, to which he retorts ‘Oh, smells just like Old Spice’!
Talk about taking the jam out your doughnut!!
For what its worth, I love this stuff. Rich, dense, opulent, complex, a 10/10 for me.

An iconic masterpiece that at the same time creates a definite problem for the wearer. Where does this scent fit? Who knows or cares, that’s a problem of a lesser kind. This fragrance is a painting. It’s meant to be admired not to ask where it should be hung. There’s lots going on with this but to me what’s left is a mix of spices (cumin, coriander) and gingerbread cookies. I cannot wear it, but I can admire it. Try before you buy.

So I have been putting away on reviewing L’Air du Desert Marocain for quite a while since I thought I might not do it justice. However, I got my full bottle today, so I think the time is right. Straight from the get-go I get loads of cedar, cedar and more very realistic cedar. This lovely woody note is accompanied by a variety of spices (especially cumin, which subsides in a few minutes) and some sweetness pushing through, could be vanilla. Strangely it feels very nostalgic, and personal. It reminds me of my grandfather painting something in the balcony using an old wooden cabinet as a table or a stand. Basically it makes me think of a heated up wood cupboard with paint drying on a cloth canvas. As LDDM dries down, however, it gets sweeter, but never annoyingly so, kind of reminds me of gingerbread cookies. The longevity and projection are amazing, one spray is all you need, two if it’s in the dead of winter when it is freezing outside.
In the end, what can I say? This is beyond special to me and it will always be one of my favourites (if not THE favourite) fragrances of all time. It really does transport you elsewhere, but to me it is not the Maroccan Desert, but my childhood home way in the past…

Right at first whiff this fragrance brings old memories! because smells like classic and old fragrances that my grandfather and many guys back in those days used to wear. a classic and manly scent with great quality and blend.
Dry, green, very resinous and coniferous. A pleasure to wear. Hints of herbs and citrus flowers and quality of conifers which brightens any mood. Woods in the dry-down.
As time passes by, those bitter resins and spices get weaker (they will stay till the end tough) and at the same time scent gets sweeter and a little more powdery.
In this part scent has a little dirty and kind of animalic feeling as well but it’s very mellow.
Projection is good and above average and longevity is around 4-5 hours.

I was excited about this as I imagined something spicy, warm and sensual – which it is probably on a different skin type and I’m sure it would be amazing on a man, but on me, it turns a bit masculine. In fact, it smells a bit like the shaving soap that my grandfather (a former barber) uses, so it is comforting but not necessarily something I would wear in my own skin. I bought a tester on Luckyscent, I love that we can properly test these niche scents that are very rarely middle of the road. I’d rather discover something is not what I thought than bore my nose to death with scents that were clearly designed by a committee of consumer researchers to please as many people as possible without truly delighting and of them.
In conclusion, a great scent that you should try, it may just not be what it says on the bottle depending on your skin.

Wow, this smells so beautiful, mysterious and alluring. It’s one of those rare fragrances that take you on a journey.
    Just amazing.

I bought a bottle of L’Air du Desert Marocain last year, and have been wearing it at least once a week since then. This is a layered fragrance with many facets and nuances. It is a super-projector and even just one or two sprays lasts at least 9 hours on my skin. If you are a foodie like me, the first recognizable items would be cumin and coriander. A bombastic, assaulting bitter accord of oak moss, vetiver, birch and cedar follows, This is then somewhat tempered with a honeyed-resin “amber” accord (tons of cistus labdanum and perhaps benzoin/vanilla) and jasmine. This stuff keeps going and going. It is quite remarkable in the longevity department. An iconic oriental spicy/woody delight by Andy Tauer.

From the bottle it smells like a strong Shalimar but with body heat it turns quickly very dry, cedar strong, maskuline. On my skin it’s just shaving foam on a wooden barbershop brush. I wish I’d have other associations and could see the mastery like others do.

OK, got my 1 ml sample from Lucky Scent. When I first just dipped the dabber in the vile, and spread a tinny bit on my finger, it reminded me of a favorite fragrance, 80% the same: MFK Lumier Noire Pour Homme.
It beutifully blends patchouli, cummin, and rose, in a perfectly blended accord.
Then later I dabbed it on heavier, and it became quite a different fragrance. I got that harsh, dry desert air vib.
I was guessing I was going to smell amber, or labdanum, (rock rose resin) but not as I ever knew them. It’s an amber accord, with some sharp synthetics and cumin, and vanilla.
This has a lot of virtual notes, like Le Labo fragrances. There are lots of aldehydes and synthetic notes, but done very well. Andy Tauer has a degree in chemistry and uses aroma chemicals masterfully here.
I think the dry, harsh desert air, comes from the synthetics. Then there is that soft and natural oriental accord, as in the Lumier Noire I mentioned; Patch, cummin, and Jasmine. It is a beautiful accord here, perfectly blended, to where you don’t pick out the individual notes.
Like a musical chord, it has it’s own identity, not easy to pick out the notes, unless your very musical.
I’m not sure I love this. I have harsh medecinal fragrances that are more wearable than Desert Moroccan, like MFK Cashmere Oud. What I like most about desert Moroccan, that patchouli floral accord, is done so much nicer in MFK Lumier Noire homme. It is more floral (rose) but the rose is well blended, and doesn’t get feminine.
I can tell you this is a light oriental.
There is more Patchouli and Jasmine, and less amber than the note pyramid.
I’m sorry, but it does smell like a harsh household clenser at times, with some lavender added to soften the harshness. This is mostly just in the opening few minutes, it then begins to settle to something much nicer.
Gals if you kind of like this, but would like something a bit more feminine; I would suggest Lumiere Noire Pour Homme, or pour feme, or Narsiso Rodriguez for her.
I agree with many reviews, that it’s not very wearable, but more interesting in an artistic way.
I think my rating will be somewhat low, because I think a fragrance can be very artistic and wearable.
It smells a little soapy at times. I get something like a sweet medecinal candy, like Ricola; It’s nice. One of the Moroccan city smells, wafting in… Someone mentioned, root beer, that’s a good comparison.
OK, it does change and develope, with some transportive exotic smells, that are very pleasant. The cummin note is a big part of this exotic accord; it is very unique.
This fragrance is getting fun. It is very unusual in a fun and pleasant way. Reminding me of ELdO’s fragrance “Rien” in that way.
    Rating: 7/10

Oooh, this is realy nice… Vetiver, white & red floral, amber, vanilla (definitely vanilla, even though it doesn’t say), white floral, amber, wood, vanilla, patchouli, vanilla, amber again, vetiver, oakmoss, amber & vanilla… Just had a bunch of coriander in my dinner, but I don’t doubt that’s in there too. Yup, dries down to an amber/vanilla/vetiver/oakmoss/patchouli. It layers well with *itself* God bless you, Andy Tauer :*

This one is exactly like Frederic Malle’s Dries van Noten.
Only Dries van Noten stay’s longer on the skin and smells the same after 10 hours when I just sprayed it.

Listening to the typical August storms roll through and wanting a little treat before bed, I picked up my sample and dabbed a bit on, just to revisit this strange little atmosphere in a vial. As bizarre as it sounds for such a heavy fragrance, this is absolutely astoundingly beautiful tonight! What on earth?! Of all the fragrances I would have designated for high summer, this was not one I would have even considered, but for whatever reason, it’s glorious. Maybe because it smells so parched; it’s one of the driest fragrance I have experienced. Somehow, in the suffocating summer humidity, LADDM gives the impression of an arid, expansive space and shimmers like a star. Well named, and perfect for a warm night.

It took me years to understand this perfume: L’Air du Desert Marocain is literally a trip. The start of this trip begins with a strong camphoreus patchoulli note, it’s probably nightime, so the traveler needs a strong aura of courage and audacity! The night goes on and the amber comes to warm the traveler, there’s a blanket made with spices, coriander and some jasmin for a little sleep. When the day is about to come, all the traveler gets with him is a vibrating vetiver scent indicating a new path. That’s the end of the journey, or the beginning!

This stuff is crazy strong. My wife got an allergic reaction just by being in the same floor when I tried a tester. Not for me.

I got a sample. The hype is real, its a masterpiece.
    BUT THERE IS A PROBLEM!!!
You cannot probably wear it at all. Its a good perfume but its harsh, its dry, its not something that i want people to recognize me with. Its not friendly at all.
    Its a pass for me.

L’Air du Désert Marocain is a spicy-woody-smoky-earthy amber fragrance … a desert wind, unlimited and wild.
One can only admire this fragrance creation … the scent lasts on the skin and becomes better. Everything is harmoniously tuned. For me is a masterpiece.

Just got the sample pack from Mr. Tauer himself…. sprayed it once on my chest, wife came into the room and said “you smell like an old man” i was pissed because i really like this fragrance however my wife is the one that plays with my pickle so therefore its a pass for me, but it smells really good!!!!

Got a sample of this out of curiosity. Oh my goodness.
The first few minutes are a total spicebomb. It’s like being in the middle of a medina with a headache. Miraculously, after a few minutes, my skin steps out of the medina and it’s bliss. Cool desert air with the last traces of the day’s heat coming off the sand and out of the still-bustling city soothes my head instantly. The remnants of spice and perfume cling to my skin as though I must have had a wonderful day.
Staying power is excellent. I’m a little bit in love.

I’ve tried a couple times, but I can’t smell anything except a faint bit of wood. It’s puzzling and disappointing.
Edit: Apparently this stuff is so powerful that sniffing the atomizer made me nose blind. I used my Montale trick, and it’s GORGEOUS. Sweet-but-not-sweet smokey cinnamony goodness. Powdery up close. I just got a whiff of a floral…
However, I went nose blind again within ten minutes. I’ll have to retest this in winter.

I bought a sample & didn’t like it at first. Then I gave it a full wearing and holy crap did I fall hard. This grew on me like I’ve never experienced before. I immediately bought a full bottle. Andy Tauer is the Pablo Picasso of perfumery. I ordered the discovery set from his website & I can’t wait to try the rest of his collection!! Words can not describe this fragrance. This is literally the first time I wore a fragrance that told a story throughout the day. People keep stopping me to ask what I’m wearing. This has become one of my all time favorite frags. Lasts all day long & I can’t get enough of it. Definitely try before you buy cause this is a very special fragrance that won’t be for everyone.

When I try a sample of an expensive fragrance, there’s always a part of me that secretly hopes I don’t like it so that I won’t be compelled to spend more money on it in the future. Unfortunately, L’Air du Desert Marocain lives up to its reputation and I love it.

  27. :

I wanted to love this stuff. I wanted to listen to the reviews and thought it could be my signature. It makes me want to throw up. I don’t know why. It’s a sandy moth ball like smell with leather? Almost like a sweaty camel smell.

  28. :

    4 out of 5

A nice cedar laden fragrance, with patchouli, musk, lavender, and amber to round it off. As others have mentioned, L’Air du Desert Marocain is a dry, yet sandy woodsy fragrance with a slight touch of smoke. An aroma that is really nice.
A one of a kind fragrance!!

I can now see where the enthusiasm for this perfume comes from. First time I tried it from a sample from Luckyscent I was not convinced. It was pleasant but it seemed very soft, so soft that I had a hard time even smelling it propely. Now I tried it again, near Le Meroc pour Elle, since it is presented like a sister or cousin fragrance, from the same samples BUT in warm weather. Last time it was winter. Which provess there is a difference to how a perfume comes out depending on seasons. And I can see where all the beauty is. On me it’s all about incense, not the smokey type but the real white incense with very soft jasmine and amber. It’s beautiful and very relaxing. However it seems to stay very close to the skin and rather soft spoken. A slight note of vanilla woods comes up later but still very soft. I haven’t been to Marocco but if this is the desert air then it must be in the late evening when the sunlight changes into those bluish sunset light after the sun went down. Le Maroc pour Elle however, different story….

I bought myself a sample to try after reading so many positive reviews here and it did not disappoint me.
It is dry and sandy which matches its name so much. Indeed it is the air of the Moroccan desert. And it is not the daytime of a desert because of its cool vibe which reminds me of the wind blown through the window at night. The wind is a bit hot due to the high temperature in the day whilst a bit cool because of the sudden decrease in temperature at night as well as the moonlight.
The scent is so well blended that I can’t really recognize what ingredients are there but I can also smell a hint of spiciness and woodiness. It is like the wind mixing with the hue of those spicy allspice used and favoured by African.
This is a unique scent and everyone who loves fragrances should try it. I am now trying it so I will have an update if there is any changes.

What can I say that hasn’t been said previously. This is a beautiful fragrance. To my nose it’s a peppery, spice laden, woody, incense and amber fragrance that screams quality. It’s a true work of art, though being so intense it’s not versatile. Don’t wear this in closed rooms if you’re trigger happy, cause you are choking people out. This is the kind of fragrance that an earthbound ruggered man wears. A man who doesn’t give a shit and just gets things done, with authority.
    Potent!

  32. :

    5 out of 5

I’m not going to write a lengthy review here, as everyone has already spoken at great lengths about this lovely fragrance.
I’ll simply say, L’Air du Desert Marocain is the sunnier, drier cousin (maybe even twin sibling) of CoSTUME NATIONAL’s ’21’, which is one of my favorite fragrances of all time.
’21’ feels notably more wet and heavy, but the two are strikingly similar, except for the drydown. Whereas ’21’ settles onto the skin with a heavy dose of sweet caraway and cold incense, L’Air du Desert Marocain’s drydown is IDENTICAL to Parfumerie Generale’s ‘Bois Blond’; an extremely parched dried-tobacco-and-hay smell.
For this reason, ’21’ is still superior in my opinion, but I think L’Air du Desert Marocain is maybe a preferable alternative for a warmer day. If L’Air du Desert Marocain was a burning fire, ’21’ would be her smoke-choked, hissing embers.

This one will be remembered in History like one of the best perfumes ever created by such a kind and modest man Andy Tauer.
This is Liquid Art and it should be displayed in some sort of museum of fragrances like Musee du Parfum in Paris, International Perfume Museum in Grasse or Osmotheque in Versailles!

“Imagine finding peace in a room, lying on the bed, exhausted from the heat of the day, with the window open, letting the cool air in which still is very dry and filled with the scents from the near desert and overlayed with the spicy scents of the streets below.” – Andy Tauer

Have you ever experienced a fragrance where you thought, “This is interesting, well-blended and phenomenal, but there is no way I would wear it.”? Perhaps I am too conventional, but it’s just not me. But I would love to smell it on others.

  38. :

Every note in this amazing perfume is a contraindication to my skin chemistry and yet it is heaven in a bottle and smells like a thousand angels on me. I have just ordered a full bottle because it is my unicorn. This is the perfume I have been searching for all my life. The smell is so sweet with smokey incense and complemented with rose and white flowers and then there is a touch of wood, a touch of musk and a touch of spice. The fragrance lasts forever on my skin and surrounds me with its beautiful aroma all day long. I never get anosmic when I wear this perfume, unlike every other perfume I have in my collection.
Try before you buy as it is not a safe blind buy or a cheap one either, but I can say, that this scent is androgynous and will smell divine on a man as well as a woman.

Dark, dry, heavy incense. It’s the same tone as Narciso Rodriguez for her, as far as the weight and density of the fragrance are concerned. It’s unisex as it doesn’t possess any of the traditional gender specific components of perfumes, as least to my nose. It really does conjure up a desert environment- I keep seeing glimpses of Santa Fe every time I catch the scent. This is a must try for incense lovers, but not a particularly safe blind buy unless you really found a good deal. I really like this fragrance, but I’m not sure how much wear I would get out of it. It’s too intense for work, too serious for play and weirdly chaste for dates… so I think this is one of those scents that I will wear for myself when I have down time, but would not wear a lot around other people. I will enjoy my sample while I have it, but doubt I’ll splurge on a fb (unless I find a deal I can’t pass up!).

I get somewhat of a smoky incense smell; it kind of actually smells like a Church lol. The name of the fragrance definitely fits the smell, only problem for me is where you would actually wear the frag??

  41. :

First i have to say it’s an amazing scent. So complex and a beautiful experience to wear it, one of the best!! BUT the longevity on my skin is 6 hours with one hour solid projection!!! What have happened? everybody says is like 12 hours on their skin. Have this been watered down?? please Andy Tauer ,say it isn’t so!!!!

  42. :

    4 out of 5

On me this starts spicy and syrupy. There is sweetness to it that I cannot really distinguish. This first stage is nice, but not something to die for. A few minutes later, as if the night comes, warm and mildly sweet, but there is also a dark aspect showing up. I guess this is the vetiver. It brings a bit of manliness in the picture, like a bare chest in the night. Warmth and sweetness slowly withdraw, and I am left with an aromatic ending, which totally ruins the experience for me. I really don’t like the drydown. It smells manly in a very old-fashioned way.
Those who like Lalique’s Encre Noire will definitely enjoy this one too. However, I think Encre Noire smells much better and is far more interesting.
Overall, I am underwhelmed. I read so many positive reviews for this fragrance, but in my opinion it is overrated. Oriental fragrances are a favourite territory of mine, however, the air of the Moroccan desert is definitely not heading in my direction.

A truly masterpiece and remarkable scent , that remains in memory for a long time . But as was said by previous reviewer , sillage and longevity is mediocre . That is very strange because in accordance to fragrantica votes it must be heavy / very long lasting . Anybody knows if there was any reformulation ?

  44. :

    4 out of 5

One of the very few scents that stays true to it’s name – this truly does smell like desert sand baking under the Saharan sun.
Which, sadly, leads to the disappointment – who, after all, wants to smell like hot dust? I had very high hopes for this one after the glowing reviews and cultlike status of LaDDM amongst us fragheads.
The first expensive niche that I’ve blind-bought based solely on reviews, and ultimately come to regret the purchase. Performance and sillage are mediocre at best as well.
While the core scents are fundamentally different, if one is after a complex + dry niche fragrance suitable for fall / winter, Chergui (with its beguiling hay / tobacco mix) is a far better alternative.

I received this as part of a sample pack in error. I was supposed to get 3hermessence samples, but this came instead of one of them. I decided to give it a go. My initial feeling was, umm, no way. This scent starts out super dry, not really my thing. But about 15 minutes in, the most amazing smell enveloped me. I’m not that great at notes, but I know I didn’t get any cumin, thankfully. Just so much sweet, Woody incense. This isn’t really feminine, but not super masculine either, at least by my definition. This lasts for several hours on my skin, which usually eats fragrance, and much longer on my clothes. I just love this so much, unfortunately, because it’s crazy expensive and I’m totally obsessing over this scent. I’m going to try and stave off the inevitable by ordering another decant.

“Come with me to the Kasbah”
I have never been to the Sahara desert. I have never been to a Moroccan spice market/souk. And yet, 10 seconds into this fragrance and I’m in the Sahara desert very near a Moroccan spice market.
Amazing… 10 seconds and I get Valentino murmuring “Come with me to the Kasbah.”
The first note of No 02 L’AIR DU DÉSERT MAROCAIN (EDT intense-unisex) is simply desert sand. But this head note is not the desert sand of my American Southwest. This head note is the vast swirling desert sand of the Sahara. The Sahara sand note is then almost immediately followed by a riotous jumble of sweet (petit grain-steam distillation of bitter orange tree) and exotic (coriander, cumin and many more) notes that are almost certainly coming from a Moroccan spice souk. The heart notes of warm rock rose and jasmine were there for me from the beginning and the notes stayed with me for the next 10 hours. The body notes are of sturdy dry cedar with vetiver and a fine ambergris in the background. These body notes carried this precious elixir for 10 blissful hours.
    This one is very special.
    Enjoy!
FYI- You can get 5 samples of Andy Tauer’s perfume for the very reasonable 🙂 price of 31 dollars at the Tauer website. There is a gr8 blog on the Tauer site too.

I wore this wonderful parfum today. I get a very dry, desert smell. I cannot describe the smell, but its a high quality scent. I was able to detect it even after 9 hours. However, I like a beastly smelling scent and that’s what I want if I’m going to spend $125 dollars on a parfum. This parfum deserves a very Honorable mention however…

A well blended amber-woody fragrance, dry like a desert in a good way. I think this is wearable on any occasion as it is not beastly nor offending.

I hate cumin. I hate vanilla. I hate most ambers. I love L’Air du Desert Marocain.
This fragrance is so airy yet complex, so creamy and complicated. I tend to retch at most vanilla notes, even though I actually really love vanilla beans and vanilla extract. Tauer has the best vanilla notes that I’ve ever tried, Tauerville’s Vanilla Flash is also a great one.
This is such a perfect blend of sweet and spice (not spicy). It’s warm and resinous, and smooth as the day is long. It actually borders on gourmand (which I typically despise, but this is just so charming). To me it smells like shortbread cookies baked with aromatic spices and cooling on the kitchen counter.
Unfortunately for me, I still am not a fan of gourmand and gourmand-leaning fragrances and can’t imagine myself wearing this. But I am so impressed that this fragrance was actually good enough to make me reconsider. Amazing stuff!

    Love at first sniff!!!!
After all the hype and praise I heard on this stuff, I decided to try a 5ml sample.
I was totally blown away in love at first sniff (extremely rare) and knew I was buying a whole bottle even before I could exhale the scent.
While I have never been to Morocco, this really does smell like an exotic place.
I am thinking open air vendors burning sandalwood incents selling spices and fabrics, fragrant berries of thorny dessert shrubs.
This fragrance has a very unique character all it’s own, and that’s what I look for, something that stands out from the crowd.
I cant comment yet on silage or longevity, but I think this mix of notes is shear genius.

WOW. I mean really, WOW. I think I just found a new signature scent. I mean, to me, however, this really isn’t the type of fragrance that you turn into a sig-scent though; it’s just to luxurious IMHO. For instance, the way the cedar and amber come together make you feel like a red carpet was rolled out in the middle of the desert leading to a palace where after your long journey, a bed awaits you. That I believe is just what makes this one so NICE! I feel like this should be sooner reserved for a special occasion like a date with someone who is important to you and whose opinion matters.

    Art in a bottle.
Warm, dry and dusty just as the name implies it manages to achieve what the perfumer intended.
    Versatility is highly compromised though.
This is a scent you wear for yourself.

I’ve read countless reviews on this fragrance and am still surprised at my contrary opinion. After the initial drydown I find the scent to be extremely insufferable – the vanilla is cloying above any other note. It’s also incredibly potent; I had to shower it off and still I’m getting wafts of it here and there. Where is it coming from?
One reviewer stated that they “would have a hard time seeing how this would offend anyone”. All I can say to that is; please don’t wear this on airplanes.

You know that experience when you finally get to smell a fragrance you’ve been dying to try for ages? You’ve been imaging what it must smell like for months.
Then at last you get to smell it for real and it’s like a revelation. You have that wonderful ‘aha’ moment when the smell registers in your brain.
