In Vanille Patchouli Parfums Berdoues for women the amber is much more dominant than I predicted. That initial surge of patchouli is accompanied by distinct amber. At first, I was surprised by this.
The patchouli in this does not smell like the perfumer’s patchouli in Angel. This one is greener and smells more reminiscent of patchouli essential oil. It smells very natural and calming.
The vanilla comes through. For me the chocolate emerges after that first intense stage.
I wasn’t sure I liked this. Then after the dry down, I was really captured by it. I agree this would be very nice to layer with something gourmand, such as Laurence Dumont’s Tendre Madeleine, which I reviewed today as well.
I think this is addictive. Good lasting power, but I resprayed for bedtime. Crazy.

Vanille Patchouli was the first fragrance that I tried from the Berdoues line perfumes. I took a risk purchasing it because we don’t stock Berdoues in Australia and I loved the sound of the notes of this particular scent. I’m happy to say that I wasn’t disappointed!!
There are definite similarities to Mugler’s Angel with this one. After an hour or so, this fragrance does come into a league of it’s own. Vanille Patchouli’s vanilla, dark chocolate and amber hit a much higher note. The patchouli and tonka bean make an appearance a little later on. The amber holds all of the components together brilliantly. The amber is so divine that I just want to keep sniffing my wrist all day! I am in love with this scent!
The dark chocolate actually is DARK. It’s strong, recognisable, and works beautifully with the patchouli. It’s so wonderfully, delicately balanced and to me, that’s the mark of a great perfume maker.
The longevity is impressive. It has lasted me the whole day, it does quieten down somewhat, but it is still noticeable after about 6-7 hours. The silage is lovely too. It isn’t overpowering or heavy. It’s ethereal and charming.
This is a glorious ode to vanilla, patchouli and dark chocolate. A beautiful oriental vanilla scent that is mature, refined and sophisticated. There are plenty of oriental vanilla scents out there, but this one is a stand out for me. Sigh, another Berdoues perfume to add to my love list!
