    (review from a sample)
Usar is the third Euphorium Brooklyn I’ve tried, and while they are all stunning and of great quality, this is the most easily likeable. The “main notes according to your vote” can give you a good idea of what it smells like.
It starts off with lime, spicy ginger, resin and vetiver. In this phase it is tart and both earthy and very lightly bitter due to the vetiver. Then cloves, wood and more resin make it warmer, with the addition of sugar and the same earthy aspect. In the drydown I can still smell the citrus, but it is more subdued, while vetiver is always in the background.
Usar has a cola-like feel – which I love – and is quite warm despite the fresh citrus-ginger combo. I could see this being worn all year round though, even in the summer, because the projection is soft to moderate.
EDIT: oh God. I think I’m getting addicted to it. It is very hot outside these days, and I can’t stop thinking about Usar. It is hot, smoldering, but also humid and airy, thirst-quenching even! It is a great perfume for summer, guys.
It is tart, sweet, juicy, dry… Love it. Really.

Chicago TonyT is so right in immediately pointing out that this is NOT a citrus aromatic. I would categorize it as an Oriental with heavy woods. It’s a fascinating fragrance. It first reminded me of the fire that destroyed my grandparents’ house. It made me remember the smell of when the fire was put out–that odd scent of damp, charred wood. I did not notice any citrus in the top, but it might just be my perception in the warm weather we are experiencing.
Several minutes later, I detect a beautiful, sweet aroma that somehow smells very familiar. It’s a delicate sweetness, but it isn’t creamy. No vanilla here. It blends marvelously with the woods as the smokiness subsides and smooths out. I find this to be a dark scent and quite the unique woody fragrance. I get more cloviness in the drydown, which enhances the scent of the sweet woods. Think tiny cinnamon bun fresh out of the oven, and it’s served on a thick, charred oak plank.
[Disclosure: I now sell this fragrance at aveparfum.com. But my words are always my own, and I am totally addicted to Usar!!!]

Citrus Aromatic? That deserves a big LOL!! This scent is resinous no doubt. Unfortunately it’s not the resinous that I like. I prefer the sweeter types and this is downright damp, dark and dirty. Someone compared it to a toned down version of Norne which is accurate IMO. It does start off with a hint of citrus but also a pine accord that quickly takes over. I have a sample of the oil version and this lasts easily over 8 hours with moderate sillage. I would think of it as more of a specialty type of scent strictly for the wearer’s enjoyment. If you enjoy houses such as Slumberhouse and Beaufort London then give this a shot.

Marry me, Usar! It was redolent infatuation at first whiff, and I fall more in love with you every day.
While not identical, the citrus-vetiver-benzoin combo reminds me of Bruno Fazzolari’s Lampblack. Usar is more camphoric; while Lampblack has a petroleum note. Raw Spirit’s Bijou Vert has similar accords, while being exceedingly green. There’s a stronger “tennis ball” note than Imaginary Authors’ The Soft Lawn, which explicitly calls it out in their fragrance pyramid. Nothing else comes close, though, to Usar.
I cannot imagine my life without you.

Usar was originally launched in 2015, but this review pertains only to the 2016 reworking of the perfume, as I have no idea what the original smells like. The original was an oil, whereas this is an EDP. It was created by Euphorium Brooklyn owner, creative director, and nose Stephen Dirkes, who might prefer to be identified by as nom de guerre, the nineteenth-century perfumer Christian Rosenkreuz.
Usar has notes of Javanese lime (jeruk nepis), ginger, clove, sweet raw palm sugar, vanilla, cassia, fragrant resins, roots, Sumatran benzoin (hajimon), cypriol, oud (gaharu), ambergris, and damp earth. I find the note of vetiver to be especially important in the life of the fragrance as it wears on the skin, as this is one of the few fragrances I’ve ever experienced that is able to capture that note from first whiff to its last gasping breath. (In fact, the Indonesian word for vetiver is “usar,” specifically the vetiver harvested in the Sunda Islands of the Malay Archipelago.)
Usar is reminiscent of a bright, bracing, invigorating eau de cologne – except it’s quite a bit more sophisticated than anything your grandfather ever wore, and almost certainly longer-lasting. It opens up with a lovely, zesty lime made even more exciting by the presence of ginger, which has citrusy and earthy notes all its own, making it a perfect bridge between the zesty top notes and the darker, resinous bottom ones. Clove follows close behind, which in combination with the vetiver provide just the right touch of smoke. The base offers just the barest hint of ambergris that sets everything off beautifully.
I can imagine this performing very well in almost all seasons, except maybe the coldest of days. The lime and ginger simply sing off the skin in the summer or a hot shower, but it would perform just as well in more moderate weather as well. For this kind of perfume – admittedly hard to classify, but essentially of the citrusy/spicy/woody family – has a life on my skin much longer than I would have anticipated. I regularly get between 5 and 6 hours, which I’m highly satisfied with, with sillage being very respectable as well.
The aim of Usar, according to Christian Rosenkreuz, is to provide an anodyne for the homesickness of a perfumer pining about his experiences in Indonesia. Never having had the good luck of visiting Indonesia, I can easily sense how this perfume encapsulates the Ur-idea of that country: there’s the lime and ginger so prominent in the cuisine, the resinous incense wafting in from the ubiquitous temples, the light touches of grassiness and earthiness connote sweltering rainforests, all rounded out with an ambergris that ever so gently reminds you that you’re surrounded by ocean.
I understand that many other Euphorium Brooklyn scents are a bit more dark and brooding, which makes me even more interested in them, since that’s the way that I usually lean as well. This came as a pleasant surprise to someone whose least favorite perfume-wearing season is summer, so dominated as it is with mindless aquatics and shallow citruses. It’s so rare to smell something that is so well-suited for summer, but doesn’t compromise its sophistication or complexity.
For those perfumers who happen to be taken in just as easily by a good yarn as by a delightful fragrance, Euphorium Brooklyn shares the inviting and novelistic conceit of being co-founded by three nineteenth-century eccentrics – Rudolph Komodo, Etienne Chevreuil, and the aforementioned Rosenkreuz. Their various interactions and adventures are thickly interlarded – perhaps with a bit of thinly veiled autobiography on the part of Dirkes himself – into the descriptions of the various perfumes on the Euphorium Brooklyn site. The writing combines the readability of a Dickens or a Thackeray with the scientific attention to detail of Linnaeus and the learning of someone endlessly curious about the world, like a Hermann Broch or Thomas Mann. In short, it’s right up my alley and pretty fun to read – but it’s even more fun to smell.

Although this is quite a concentrated oil but it is quite light! ginger citrus with resin and sugar cubes (the cloying sugar) while the Soil tincture appears slowly as it calms down and makes a nice combination. Fairly good after all.

This is not flamboyant like 100 Tweeds. This is a subtle fragrance, giving me pine bed, wet earth and a whiff of smoke. This made me think of Norne by Slumberhouse, toned down. There is faint citrus at the opening, but I believe the ginger balances out the earthy and semi-sweet qualities through the end. Good, certainly not great. Thumb neutral and a pass.

This is the crown of the house for me. What a gem!
It opens up with smoldering myrrh, a mild yet tart lime, and strange earthen bitterness. It’s at first a little rough around the edges, but shortly after it enters a smooth, smoky-bitter phase that’s quite stunning. It’s dirty and naturalistic yet somehow not oppressively heavy as smoky fragrances tend to be on occasion. The drydown loses the lime, and begins to recede in the smoky department as well. Out of nowhere this strange familiar sweetness rises up and joins the bitterness and it becomes a reedy, naturalistic sugar cane accord, specifically the sort of tea-like, brownish, earthy qualities of sugar cane. It’s very enticing. Definitely worth a try! 8/10

This stuff is wonderful. Similar to L’Artisan Parfumeur’s Tea for Two, but with kicked up lime and lacking the gourmand gingerbread quality of TfT. The ginger in this is spicy, the whole thing is earthy and smoky. The effect seems very woody, though none are listed in the notes. Smells amazing on men and women.
    Wonderful outdoorsy type scent.
Reminds of Christmas in Maine with a fire burning in the wood stove.
    Love it.
