Description

Terre d’Hermès: conceived in 2006 by Jean-Claude Ellena, Terre d’Hermès is a
metaphor for materials, a matrix that speaks of territory as well as matter, earth,
and roots. This vertically structured scent is based on an alchemy of wood, the
scent first introduces the gaity of orange, the bitterness of grapefruit and the
vivacity of pepper and of fresh spices. This “vegetality” flirts with the mineral
effect of flint and the coarseness of vetiver. Dominated by cedar, the fragrance
goes deeper with the sweetness of resins and the impalpable voluptuousness
of benzoin.

Pure masculinity. No metro or unsisex vibe at all.
For a macho man that knows what he wants.

I didn’t like at all in first instance, but giving it more chance on my skin I’ve understood what a masterpiece I was wearing. Many people define it as a mature scent..for grandpa or other bullshits…
well Terre D’Hermes is a wonderful scent, deep, alluring, sexy, fresh, woody, masculine and cozy and it has a monstruos projection and sillage. It is simply one of the best citrus-woody scents I have ever owned. Real women love this juice. It is indeed for strong and self confident men..not for teenagers, that doesn’t mean it is for your grandpa!
A jewel I will always have in my collection. Simply amazing, totally in love with it. Every girl I met loved it on me.
    10/10 and thumbs up!

This is pure citrus, wood and vetiver. Extremely high quality and great performance. Took a while for me to truly start enjoying this fragrance. This to me would of fit well in the 80s with old school powerhouses as I just get that vibe. With that said it’s a winner in my book but not for everyone. I don’t see younger men in their late teens and early 20s pulling this off.

There are things that are either White or Black, or like them or not. Despite the criticism once again I will be phenomenal, it will be similar to the Fahrenheit (which I do not like) but I tried it and tried again and I can not do it pleasure! The ingredients tolerate them but probably their assimilation does not take me. I can not wear it! Tastes are tastes, we are not all the same.

Women – give this a try (sparingly) if you’re looking for something unexpected! I’m a woman and I hate sugar sweet flowery, cotton candy offerings that are dominating the market right now. Coco Chanel said a woman shouldn’t smell like a flower – and I couldn’t agree more. I believe she would also say it would be even worse to smell like a piece of candy. I love wearing this fragrance, if using one spray. The opening is deliciously both classy and rugged at the same time, which together scream masculinity, but this is why I love to wear it, because it makes me think of my husband. and it is an unexpected surprise on a woman. When it settles down it’s a subtle, gorgeous combination of woods and freshness that I can’t get enough of. Don’t get me wrong – this is perfection for men, and I love this on my husband, but that’s one of the reasons I love to wear it myself. Perfect in the fall/winter with a cashmere sweater and boots.

    I Love Terre D’Hermes

Didn’t like it at first, but it slowly grew on me…oh boy, it did. Not a huge fan of the opening, and it doesn’t perform well on a tester, but smells just great on my skin. And it lasts pretty long considering it’s an EdT! Very earthy, very masculine, very pleasing to my nose. Definitely an elegant and sophisticated scent. And I feel it’s very versatile as well.

Finally sampled this after hearing swooning testimonies of this great Hermes Terre D’Hermes. The citrus stays throughout but does not overwhelm, rather it supports the vetiver. It is a classy masculine scent for a man of quiet power. For the one spray on my arm, it did was not very strong as many male scents are. It was there but softly. So delicious and would love to snuggle on the man who wears this.
    One spray on me:
    Sillage: less than an arm
Longevity: about 4 hours then nose-to-wrist

Scents are so idiosyncratic, it’s hard to pin down when one works and one doesn’t. You can have a great cologne that doesn’t fit someone’s personality, and in your mind it gets categorized as “too ______.”
I think to pull Terre d’Hermes off, a man has to embrace his weightiness. It can work in all seasons, but it’s more subtle, mature and a bit enigmatic. If this is what you wish to get across, go for it!

  13. :

Yes it’s a mainstream fragrance. You know why? Because a lot of people buy it.
You know why a lot of people buy it? Because it’s good.
Frag freaks wish that this perfume wasn’t so publicized and stayed at a niche level, so they could say: “I discovered it, and I’m one of the few to wear it”.
This perfume is great, and now a high quality classic masterpiece.
Haters are gonna hate. The truth is that they secretly love it.

The more I wear this fragrance the more I love it. It’s a perfect work scent, especially during the fall. It tends to fool me where I think the scent is gone, then I move and catch a whiff of it…probably the iso-e super playing tricks.
10/10 scent. High quality orange, vetiver, flint blended together to perfection. A masterful balance of clean and dirty, airy and heavy, classic and contemporary. One of the top 3 scents I own…maybe number one depending on what day you ask me.

Worth for blind buy if you are a citrus note lover, citrusy and sweet vetiver fresh, masculine, beautiful grape fruit notes…
    A wow frag…

Many words have been said about this scent – mineral orange, earth, desert-y etc. But the one I’d use is earthy orange.
The famous advert picture, of a man throwing dust to the wind fits this scent to perfection.
The focus here is on orange and woods. ISO E Super is dominant, but never tiring. Instead it proves a solid backbone for this scent.
It opens with that stunning orange note. I get hints of grapefruit as well.
The orange is always there, but goes through various stages. After 5 minutes it’s joined by a flint note which gives it a decidedly mineral tinge. 10 minutes after, I get hints of roots and vetiver. It’s quite dry at this point and very photo-realistic.
After 30-40 minutes, the orange dries down with ISO E Super. It continues to evolve ever so slightly. Hints of flint, minerals and vetiver will continue to show themselves at appropriate times, making sure this scent never goes stale or old.
I could really go on and on about this scent. It’s so magnificent. A real testament to Jean-Claude Ellena’s talent.
Longevity is very good – I get 8-9 hours.

I loved this one right from the beginning. Smells very unique, French, masculine to me.
Although I get more compliments from things like Bleu De Chanel, Aventus, etc, this one has a special place in my heart and I think it comes off very refined and special.
I love the way the orange citrus is blended with vetiver to create something that is a perfect combo of citrus, woods, spice, and the tiniest touch of edgy/dirty musk. All those elements blend seamlessly to where you cant detect any one note too prominently, but becomes its own masterpiece composition. I have the original Eau de toilette version but Im excited to try the Parfum version (as I usually find they perform better)

I ‘ve read a lot of reviews of TH, so I blind bought it (like I often do) without thinking twice about it.
The opening was lovely citrus, followed by a wonderful pepper smell. I do love pepper in a fragrance, so that’s a big plus. Terre d’Hermes has got it all. However…
The dry-down comes rather quickly after an hour or so, and with my bottle (bought 2018) it is rough, very rough. The beautiful opening which was still lingering in my mind was replaced by an overly bright, almost acidic smell which was headache-inducing and turned me off altogether. It’s not just on my skin, because I’ve tried my TH on a paper strip and it got the same smell on the dry-down. I’ve now tried it multiple times, but I can’t get past the bad ending. Maybe it is my batch, or perhaps it’s a fragrance that doesn’t agree with me. I’d like to warn you that although this works great with almost everybody else (check the reviews here to get the gist of it), it might not be for everyone. I’m sad to say that this is, so far, the worst fragrance in my (limited) collection. Sacrilege. Shame on me, I know. I can’t help it.
I’d love to like it and deem it a masterpiece but the unexpected sour ending that lingers for hours ruins my experience completely. Try before you buy, especially recent batches.
TH EdT simply doesn’t agree with me…

I blind buy this, and a few other fragrances, but this one OMG I’ve been trying and keep trying but this is not for me I felt like a pile of oranges hit me, me bottle still has 98% of the juice if I did 10 sprays I think it’s too much, anyone who would like to swap for any other fragrance please hit me up

An immaculate scent, so well crafted.
It’s barely 12 year’s old at this point and still pretty much timeless.
Though it’s interesting, so many people clearly older than Terre d’Hermes itself, think it is dated or an old man scent.
Such limits on your own obsolescence, when in 12 years time you and your favorite scents will be old fashioned.
I hope fragrantica keeps rolling into the future so I can see where this holds up.
I look forward to following up on some of its flankers.
    Classic

My signature scent, you can’t go wrong with Terre d’Hermes. I don’t understand why some people say it’s dated and for old men. I’m a college student and I love this one for sure. The combination of Citrus, Wood and Vetiver is what I would say the perfect match with neither of them dominating and are equal. I would recommend this for anyone

I love this stuff, has a unique cedar note that I love. Unique.

  27. :

    5 out of 5

Interesting. This is definitely not the cedar fragrance I was expecting. It’s there, but more like a background scent stitching it together.
I do agree that this is a vetiver citrus bomb . . . although I don’t get as strong orange as some of the other reviews. I had expected it to be a bergamot scent. I definitely got the grapefruit in the opening and after that I clearly got the geranium scent. After that everything blends with the vetiver but stays very citrus heavy. Possibly some orange zest but clearly not a sweet orange scent. Citronella is closer.
I struggle to enjoy vetiver scents. I guess they’re just a bit butch for me and this would fall into the challenging but not unpleasant category.

  28. :

    3 out of 5

I’m privileged to participate and experience in this memory poured into a bottle. Lots of thought went into this one and I can definitely appreciate what it does.
It can subtly transform you into a mature thinking man when you spray it on. Most of the other fragrances in my collection seem almost haphazardly put together when compared to this one.
It’s what your leather jacket smells like when you peel an old orange while standing next to a small fire of burning autumn leaves.
Perhaps more experienced fragrance reviewers will get the gist of it…but, don’t assume that you know what this smells like – based solely on the notes or this review…or any other.

I did a review on my channel a while back and really didn’t care for this fragrance. I think it reminded me of someone else older who would wear this fragrance. The scent grows on you. I think I was originally off-put by a note, but now I really love everything about this fragrance. I feel like I’m more professional when I wear this, and feel more like a respectable adult. I don’t think it’s a love at first sniff kind of scent, but how I miss it now. I now know why it’s highly regarded in the fragrance community. This really is a masterpiece like people say. It just requires time to adjust to.

One of the few perfumes still in circulation that I like, with all the limits of modern perfumery. It is almost entirely healthy, but one can not overlook the excellent work done by Ellena. I’m talking about the first formula, that of 2006.
Opening very citrusy, bitter, and then leave room for the benzone and pelargonium, the combination refers a bit ‘to the smell of citronella, which together with citrus and woodiness dell’iso and super does not mind at all, but it is an effect that fades immediately, on the skin remains a mature scent, with base a venerando sparkling accompanied by woods (iso and super) and cedar, an earthy atmosphere, very relaxing but not smooth, since the pungent grapefruit and pepper do not fade immediately. Basically, an excellent citrus / woody ratio suitable in all circumstances, excellent durability but very artificial, so in the long term on your skin there is only a synthetic smell.
Today’s version has less evolution, more watered down and more openness than mandarin, less bitter. To today, take the current EDP, much closer to the old version and deeper and darker

True. This has nothing to do with NR Bleu Noir.
Edit: Oh well well well, how quickly I had to swallowed my words. That’s for leaving reviews without coming back to Noir Bleu to double check.
Not even remembering having done this review, I decided today to wear Bleu Noir, and in a self-indulged sniff I took an hour an a half later after first-spray, I smelled a familiar scent.
I have Bleu Noir for the past year, but this month and for the first time I had the opportunity to try Cartier Declaration Parfum. This month I also took the time to actually try Terre de Hermes since I had only sniffed it briefly once.
Terre de Hermes and Declaration Parfum have a very similar feeling, to the point I thought Mathilde Laurent did a pastiche or homage to Jean-Claude Ellena by making Declaration Parfum similar to another very known perfume from Ellena (I haven’t try the original Declaration so I don’t know how similar to the parfum version is).
The familiar scent I got from sniffing Bleu Noir is that of Declaration Parfum, and by extension, Terre de Hermes, though Bleu Noir stands farther away from those those two.
I prefer Bleu Noir, then Terre de Hermes and then Declaration, which left me with a dilema if I actually like it or not.

Can you please stop comparing this to Any frangrace with Vetiver note? Please stop it! The 80% of the comparisons are false.. You have to train your nose first, and then share your estimates fairly sure.

If you’re wearing skinny jeans, mostly T-shirts, shorts, flip-flops, crocs, joggers, trainers you’re definitely not gonna like this perfume. It’s not a chick magnet , and it will never be. You won’t get laid if you’ll be wearing this in a nightclub.
Terre de Hermes is the scent for a mature sophisticated man, who’s wearing stylish outfits, he’s getting a fresh haircut at every 2 weeks, he’s taking his clothes to his personal Tailor, he’s matching the colour of his belt with the colour of his shoes, that’s the kind of man I see wearing this fragrance. I’m in love with this scent, it defines me and it has a really good performance on my skin 10/10. I am so glad that I can’t smell it very often on other guys.
    MASTERPIECE

I love this! Fresh and dirty all in one!
It has a unique blending of orange and vetiver notes which work incredibly well in any situations. I see the expression “swiss army knife” used for scents on here, this is surely one of the best of this type.
2-3 sprays will stay with you for a full working day. Many times I have thought this scent has gone then from nowhere it emerges in all its glory.
Ticks all the boxes in my opinion. Smells great. Performs great. Versatile. Unique quality. Good price. Nice bottle.
    Essential classic scent!

A very successful accord of vetiver, cedar, mineral (geosmin?) and citrus is marred by an unpleasant, edible nutty (hazelnut?) accord.
There are several imitators of this classic by the artist JC Ellena like Montale Red Vetiver, but I think the best may be Byredo’s Sunday Cologne (which goes by the name Fantastic Man too), which of course lacks the nut accord that rubs me the wrong way.

I understand this is a popular fragrance. To me it unfortunately smells like paint or turpentine. OK, if I read the notes, I could stretch and say that maybe it is the cedar and pepper. But it isn’t what I get from just smelling it.

Without the doubt, one of the best designer vetivers out there. Classy, but also OK for casual situations. Fresh, but not summery fresh. Earthy, but not dirty.
One of my go to designer fragrances for work.
All in all Terre is well balanced fragrance with great and unique scent, good performance and versatility.

    Geranium, Geranium, Geranium.
To me, the ginger-like aromatic side of Geraniums has played equally important role as the citrus-vetiver compound. That’s how they reach the balance.
Anyone interested in Terre should also try Geranium pour Monsieur by Frederic Malle, perhaps you’ll find where your true love lies.

Not really a review, but a comment that may help put people’s mind at ease – I may come back and edit this later on with more review info.
Don’t be scared of the reform talk and it having short longevity and such. I have a 2015 bottle and my gf smelled it on me ~18 HOURS after applying, if I’m not mistaken. Get it!

I got a sample of this and have been trying to wash it of my arm for the better part of the day now. I suppose the good thing I can say about it is the longevity.
If you want to smell like a grandfather who heavily overuses aftershave, this is your scent. If not, don´t buy this. Not even as a gift, unless you really want to get back at someone.

I used to find TDH so off-putting, almost acrid but a few months ago I tried it again, several times. And for some reason it finally just clicked with me. I find it really quite a unique scent, one of those that can be really personal and therapeutic, something that you wear (and sniff) for yourself, as I’m not so sure the ladies like it all that much. But who cares when it smells this good?
It’s the earthy smell of autumn, that transitional season that takes us from warm to cold. From the orange & red leaves on the ground, wind in the trees carrying wafts of distant burning wood as the amber sky peppered with clouds begins to say goodbye to the sun.
It’s not on Fragrantica but an incredibly low-priced (and decent) alternative to this is Kudos by Milton Lloyd. Thank me later.

I love earthy fragrances, and this one is very unique.
It opens with a realistic orange scent, like peeling a juicy orange. Then slowly gives way to a wonderful mineral/ ozone scent. Like eating a fresh orange after a rainstorm. I find it very uplifting. It is also subtle, which I appreciate.
Where has this been all my life!?
I can’t believe this fragrance came out 12 years ago. I’ve sampled it today for the first time and am in love.
This is my first time trying an Hermès fragrance. Also my first Jean-Claude Ellena perfume.

This is a good scent, but it’s not for me. I could see it pulled off best by a mature (older?) gentleman wearing a suit. It doesn’t really strike me as a casual scent. Best worn in spring time.
If you like citrus and vetiver as fragrance notes, give this one a try.
Excellent longevity, good sillage. My friend had no problem smelling it on me from about an arm’s length, and this was 4-5 hours after application of 2 sprays.

  51. :

    5 out of 5

Came back to this one after many years when I found a bottle at the back of my cupboard when sorting / tidying up. As soon as I saw it, I experienced the sense of doubt and uncertainty with nervous trepidation..
As I’ve gotten older my tastes have changed and some things I used to love in the past, I dislike now and vice versa on occasion.
Recently I’ve been reliving my scent past as I’ve come across certain fragrances I forgot ever existed, not least that I’d once owned them (M7, Dune, Givenchy Very Irresistable etc.) so I’ve been having a bit of fun and smelling my way down memory lane.
With that in mind, I decided to give this another try and see if I liked it more than my gut was telling me I used to. The answer is still yes AND no. I so much want to enjoy this but it’s just so weird that I can’t. The orange power in this cannot be ignored but it’s not a sweet orange, it’s more spicy and earthy, like if you poured a litre of orange juice over yourself and rolled around in a paddock for 10 minutes. That may sound harsh to lovers of this fragrance and I don’t mean to be derisory of it, it’s just not for me, despite the fact I can kind of appreciate where and what it’s trying to be.
I now realise why I’d forgotten this one and pushed it to the back (literally and metaphorically) of my fragrance world.
Performance wise it’s good, quite loud projection and sillage and decent longevity but not much changes throughout.
As a final and perhaps to some, humorous note, I ventured to the local shop soon after freshening up with this and no doubt stank the place out.
On my hot footed journey home, I passed two kids walking a dog, which promptly barked savagely at me and actually BIT me! (seriously, true story)
If there was ever a critique of a fragrance than there you have it.

Having loved other offerings (leather etc) from Hermes, I had high expectations. Indeed this is a very special fragrance. It is citrusy and orangy without being fresh. It is certainly not ‘dirty’ as commonly described but rather smells expensive (however you define this) and refined.
The downside is the performance. While it is alive (~4 hours) it projects a nice aura around you. BUT. THEN. It disappears. Suddenly and without any warning, not leaving any trace. Sniffing like a dog with my nose direcly on the wrist will not help. It no longer exists, not even a trace is left. This is very strange and I’ve never experienced this with any other fragrances before. Could this be the effect of ISO E? I don’t know.
Still a nice uplifting and refined smell that will stay in my collection for years to come.

Terre d hermes is a wonderful scent and is one of the best in the market. Some people who like it, love it but some dont like it and hate this fragrance. I would personally recommend anyone not to blind buy this fragrance as there are mixed opinions. I prefer the edt over the edp in this case as the projection is very good the Longetivity is also moderate, but if you are looking for a long lasting fragrance with moderate projection then go for the edp version

This fragrance is one of those “works for you”, or “works against you” type of scents, unfortunately, on my skin, it falls in the “works against” category.
To be fair, I really want to like this more as I love the scent of the fragrance. A colleague of mine wears this, and I very much admired it. At first whiff, It is very clean and crisp, it smells like sunshine in a bottle.
Now everyone’s body chemistry is different, and unfortunately on me, it becomes a very DOMINATE orange smell, I get none of the earthy notes that I prefer.

Very nice Fragrance indeed but not for young guys I believe. I will give it to my DAD. I smell it on my self like an old man 🙂

This fragrance for me is a symbol of coming into my own. As a man. A professional. And as a collector. It’s made me realize that half of my collection is pointless. This is how I should smell. This is what communicates the essence of competence, sophistication, distinctiveness, verve, intellect, wisdom, and creativity. And it does it stylistically in a manner that I’m becoming more drawn to–the use of natural tones of raw materials. It smells vividly of bitter, burnt orange peel, wet flint stone, benzoin, green spicy vetiver.
You wanna smell like a handful of hair gel, tonka beans, and rootbeer, then fine, put on your BlueXtreme Intense by Zoolander and maybe the rave girl will lick your face while she’s on molly. But what about the rest of real life? And this is a scent with realness that I feel attracts those who value it.
So. If you’re a young man who rocks this. Your just ahead of the game. That’s the proper way to think of this scent. Not rating it as old or young, but the relative position of coming into your own.
In fact you could think of this scent and how people think about it as a way to think about them. This is going to resonate with grown @ss interesting men. Who are self-confident. If you hear someone say it smells like it’s for old men. You just know not to do business with them.
This just became a 2-4 times a week scent for me. From which. It’s hard to put one something of lesser quality or resonance with my own style and place in life.
I’ll be selling or giving away half my collection now. And moving on from this hobby. Having accomplished what I set out to explore. The knowledge of the scent beauty and why things smell interesting and what they express in me and around me to others.

It is a nice scent but it does not last at all. Citrusy, fresh, not overpowering. It also does not project well on me, must be my body chemistry. I prefer Eau d’Orange Verte for its sharp green tones.

    This is superbly blended.
It’s like digging your hands through the soil on an orange farm… rubbing your hands together and breathing in the moist earth and the ever present citrus in the air.
In fact, if you have ever thrown orange peels in the bin, then thrown spent ground coffee over those orange peels… you’re halfway there.
Every time I smell it, I’m amazed at how well blended it is. The timing… the way the notes hit your nose is surely sorcery. An olfactory orchestra.
There are two types of men who would wear this: those who have power and those longing for it.

Feels old at some point. Not sure if I like it because everyone likes it but everytime I wear it I fail to discover it’s greatness (if any).
Lasts about 8hrs, gives me a headache around half the trip. That’s when I realize I may don’t like it.
The headache comes from the contradiction it creates.
I’m expecting a flowy-earthy scent full of movement and all I get is an overdosed orange-grapefruit upper-class sitting male which takes me nowhere.

I kinda dig this but it needs to be the right situation. Deff agree it is an orange vetiver bomb with the grandpa feel but not too bad. Need more experiementation but the two times I’ve worn this nobody has said anything, I also feel like it was disliked usually people at work say something about the fragrance I wear.
Mature scent and situational, not for me…

I can understand people reject this fragrance when testing because it can resemble citronella candles and alike or because it is a mature fragrance (not for kids). But it is modern at the same time, not dated at all and quite unique in how it smells and behaves (it develops untill it dies). This is just not for everyone. It’s not a simple pleaser, it’s a scent to be worn with personality and character. It’s bitter and it’s crisp and at the same time very dirty. But even though I do love it when smelled up close and believe it is one of my favourites, I admit that it’s true magic relies on the wiffs you get from time to time. When someone else is wearing this, you don’t smell it directly, you get certain and constant wiffs that are true magic. You really have to know how to pull this one off, those who don’t have that capacity say it smells like grandpa lol, don’t listen to them. This can be worn with a suit or nice casual clothes but I wouldn’t wear it with a tracksuit for example. It’s wearable all seasons. Performance is 10/10 for an edt. No crap here, this is all masculine. A stayer in my collection and for sure signature worthy.

I remember my first impression to this awesome fragrance: Thank you universe for having me over in this world, and thanks God for giving me the sense of smell to be able to appreciate
