A lovely dry, church-like incense…
A very nice and intriguing fragrance from Cloon Keen Atelier. Ireland is not known for perfume making, but this is a lovely small niche house with a positive attitude and I’m impressed by this creation of theirs: Terre de L’Encens.
Terre de L’Encens could be translated as “Earth Incense” but I think the creators meant “Land of Incense”, and they mention how this was inspired by the use of it in Eastern cultures. I can see what they mean here, because the smell of this reminds me of the incense I have smelt in an old Greek church!
For me this perfume contains a combination of two notes which I love: Frankincense (Olibanum) and Iris (Orris root). It comes across as a powdery but dry incense fragrance. It’s kind of beautiful… and I see it almost like a spiritual type of incense. Not in any way a strong one, more like a subtle, delicate one. I do appreciate delicate fragrances (like Jean-Claude Ellena’s work for Hermès). This one is not too strong, it stays on the skin and gives the feeling of a warm, dry place. A lot like the inside of an old church, with incense in the background, but not a strong, burning incense. It’s more like visiting the church at the end of the day before the doors are closed and you can still smell the incense in the air from the whole day, mixed with the smell of the perfume of all the people who have visited there. It’s very evocative, and I like it very much. Great for trying.

Had a sample of this one, really hoped it might work for me, but alas, it fell apart on my skin within minutes.
This did not have the feel or an oriental on my skin, it felt much more like a watery-aquatic-airy type scent. The first dab seemed pleasant enough, although right away it didn’t feel like my kind of scent I decided to give it a go
.
Orris was dominant initially, swiftly followed by what I think must be the immortelle and I would have sworn a touch of iris also. A slightly dusty, almost burny type smell – not smokey, more like something dusty getting too hot! Then bam, in came the olibanum but not in a smoky pleasant incensey way, this was quickly turning into Prada Infusion d’Iris all over again. Sharp, sour, almost slightly acrid. This does not work on my skin in this form.
This overall has a scent that reminds me more of the sea, though not in a good way on my skin. Something sharp, tangy….
I really tried to give this a good go but it was not for me and within 45 minutes I had sore, itchy eyes and a prickly nose. This is uncommon for me in perfume so I am not sure what caused it. Sadly I had to admit defeat and remove this.
I think if your skin likes these kinds of notes done in this way, it could be a winner for you, if infusion d’iris turns beautiful on your skin this may well work for you, and if you like the more marine aquatic types of scents it might appeal, but to me this was not good, and not an oriental. A shame, I don’t think this house is for me.

You know me, love that salty, sea air, herby glossy oiled bodies on the beach vibe, so i was drawn to the descriptor of this like a moth to a flame. So, from the tester vial, the lowdown. First to the skin, a gloriously herby breeze wtih just a hint of frankincense with all the resin stripped out. I like Frankincense, it has a metallic tang which feels clean and sharp, this is matched by a delightful dry woodsiness from what, I presume, is the orris root, and, perhaps I imagine it, but I smell the iciness of Iris along with it. I was somewhat pleasantly surprised to discover a slight undercurrent of leather which might be added by the labdanum, which I had expected to knock the fragrance out of my comfort zone with it’s propensity to deliver an ambery whack, but no, it’s a smooth herbal leather. So far so good. For me, thankfully, I failed to detect immortelle. I don’t generally like that toasty vibe, so I’m glad it’s not apparent. There is a salty vibe in this, though I’m not sure how it’s there – some kind of “witchery/alchemy” thing must have given it a maritime glamour in the mixing. All in all, I love this salty, herby clean little sweetie, and would love it more, if it lasted longer than an hour on my skin. After half an hour, it was barely there, after an hour…. nothing. I don’t think I am anosmic, as when I took a little more onto my skin, it was back, just as before, to keep the fragrance on me would cost me a small mortgage. But yes, it’s a thumbs up for Cloon Keen Atelier on this occasion. Very nice indeed.
