Description

Soul is pure emotion. It is a unique scent that has been created in order to embody the Essence and Soul of CoSTUME NATIONAL. The warm fragrance takes shape around an iconic ingredient: pure Amber. A great favorite of the designer, amber expresses freedom and absolute elegance.”

Costume National worked with Dominique Ropion to create this oriental scent of a strong and unique character. The richness and rare quality of raw materials – some of them coming from the prestigious LMR Laboratory in Grasse – together with the ultimate technologies create a warm, sensual, elegant and charismatic perfume, which embodies the true soul of CoSTUME NATIONAL.

The pure and solid glass reveals the natural beautiful orange color of the fragrance and it is embellished by the iconic black logo. The box is matte black with a soft-touch finish, which contrasts with the intensity of the vivid orange logo. The result is a sophisticated, strong and unique creation.

Available as a 100 ml Parfum.

Soul was launched in 2015.

This is very strong and I want to say “Offensive” fragrance, Works only for winter nights when you want to be Bold.
When I close my eyes and smell this I feel I’m a prince from the middle east, probably wearing a white Thawb standing in front of a very luxurious sport car maybe. It’s definitely night and crowded like everyone is looking at me.
Long story short, there’s no versatility in this perfume

A fragrance that received some hype and I wanted to love, but it did not work out.
I get a simple fragrance composed of tobacco, dry sharp amber and sweet resin. I find the composition to have too much of the tartness or sharpness from the amber or does have other notes to make it smell complex or smooth enough for me.
So for me this smells very rough, rugged and masculine. That is not a bad thing, but when I say this is the older brother to Dirty English that is saying something.Even though it is masculine, the spices come off as casual or maybe lesser quality too.
I wish this was blended better and had more notes personally.
Don’t let my opinion discourage you, you might love this. For me I will love jubilation 25 ,Serge Lutens ambre sultan and other other niche amber fragrances.

Oud’ish ambery opening without getting scanky. Bubbel gummy notes (maybe from vanilla/mint notes?). This “bubbel gum” gets more prominent, but softer, in the drydown. And the oud gets more silent also in the drydown, which I like.
Doesnt remind me about M7 as many thinks. Soul is far less oudy, its softer and more playful. It has oud in it, but neverthless its not sharp and its not that prominent as in M7. M7 is very mature and could be hard to wear. Soul is not. This reminds me a bit of grand soir from mfk. Warm and sexy amber with a unique magical twist.
Overall a very nice and interesting scent with great longevity and projection on my skin. Easy on the trigger, Tiger!
    8,5/10

I haven’t worn Black Gold By Ormonde jayne in a while but I just got a sample today of Costume National Soul and I swear they’re identical? Which isn’t a bad thing, especially if Soul has good performance. It would be a much cheaper alternative!!

A difficult scent like a wild animal.
Although I am still learning I dont think its a scent for beginners.
If I smell this off uncapped bottle its lovely; but when I srpay it on my skin theres an initially animalic smell mixed with the lovely; not always there, the animalic often fades after 20 minutes(or I go blind to it) but might put off some people.
Scent is strong; could smell it when the though wrapped parcel and cellophane round box. Although not well wrapped never experienced that before. I thought pink pepper so strong. I am not a fan of the bottle cap its not good enough to stop the smell. When wearing I dont notice the strength. I have not worn it much social because I have been trying to understand whether I like.
to summerize; complicated scent; partly lovely and partly animalic.

    Jubilation 25 vibe.
    Excellent projection and longevity (beast)
Here is the problem: most girls and ladies around me HATE it. They asked me not to wear it again. Only one lady out of 15 liked it. They said it was too strong and too smokey.
I do love the scent though.
So buy it only to make a statement in formal events or business meetings. Very bad for for romantic or close encounter situations.
One famous YouTube reviewer said this fragrance smells like “sex”. I do not know what sex he is having but it is definitely not heterosexual sex.
    To summarize:
    Not sexy. Not romantic.
    Very powerful. Very masculine.
    Long lasting. Excellent projection.

Okay, it smells like burnt sugar + a sort of generic smell you can find in the Joop homme + some hint of oud. The oud doesn’t have natural smelling quality and it’s faint.
Don’t get me wrong, many people enjoy it. My friend said “you smell good”, but I cannot really appreciate the sweetness and generic feeling that I get from it.
    It performs quite good.

Would say it’s a male focused perfume that many women will enjoy wearing too. Reminds me a little of Oud Satin Mood and is indeed a lovely and intricate fragrance with many facets.
It’s earthy and fruity and woody, all at the same time.
Pleasant for an autumn day perhaps.

This is one of the best fragrances in my collection!
The scent is unmistakably masculine and confident, while being comforting and alluring, and dark and mysterious at the same time. A fragrance that matches its name. This stuff has SOUL!!

I have worn this about 10 times over the last year and have decanted most of my bottle. 30 ml remains and I have decided to sell it. IDK what it is but I have never loved it. Beast mode for sure but it has a harsh vibe to it overall. The patchouli, leather and oud don’t mix well on my skin with the sweet and spiciness of the vanilla or the synthetic feel of the ambergris. Overall it has a harsh vibe that just does not match my skin. I know that most enjoy it but if you are thinking about blind buying it please reconsider and order some samples first.

Great fragrance. Although technically unisex, it works very well for me as a man. I’ve noticed this scent smells quite different on my girlfriend’s skin than it does on mine. It smells softer, less woody and more feminine on her. Apparently that’s due to the differences in male vs female skin chemistries. Which is good news if you like unisex scents but don’t necessarily want to smell like the opposite sex.
Smooth, warm, inviting scent. It is an Eau de Parfum with very good sillage, projection and longevity. A small amount goes a long way, which makes this very economical, despite its niche pricing (which is still moderate for a niche fragrance).
As a YSL M7 Oud Absolu owner, I’m not really getting the M7 Oud Absolu vibe with this fragrance. Which is fine by me. Both scents are great, but I love this one and am glad it’s different to M7 OA.
As an Interlude Man owner and appreciator, I’m also not getting the Interlude vibe either. Interlude is like getting smacked in the face with a baseball bat made of frankincense, while this fragrance is like getting kissed by a woman with soft full lips and long dark eyelashes. Interlude is stridently authoritative while Soul is smoothly sensual. Soul is also wearable in a wider range of situations than Interlude.
The dry down is definitely better than the start. It takes about 30 minutes or more for the full complexity of this scent to reveal itself, so you need to be patient. But your patience will be richly rewarded.
And after a longer period of time, say four or five hours or more, the scent will become even softer and smoother – more like Grand Soir by MFK.
I agree with other reviewers who are shocked that this fragrance doesn’t get more attention, because it certainly deserves more.
I also agree with another reviewer who mentioned MFK Grand Soir. I like both fragrances and can smell their similarities, but they are different enough to appreciate in different ways.
    Highly recommended.

Incredible blind buy for lovers of this fragrance type. M7 revisited?

  14. :

    5 out of 5

There’s a little bit of M7 going on here, a little bit of Scent Intense, but mostly an Interlude vibe in my opinion. If you like that candy smell of Interlude or Roja’s Sweetie Aoud, which I do, you will definitely love this! To make things even better, I get a touch of Ellena’s Bois Farine that brings it all together in a masterful way that only Ropion, one of my favorite perfumers of all time, could do. Pick some of this up if you get a chance.

Possibly the most underrated fragrance of all time. After smelling Soul, i see where the insperation for MFK Grand Soir came from.

This scent is so magic and addictive.
Its like something between a forrest, candle, dessert and a fire place.
Its intriguing, warm, comforting and a little rugged.
Seriously could not stop sniffing it!
Smelling it at first I really didn’t think OUD, just woodiness, I thought it to mainly be amber, vanilla, pine and spices. And see it to be leaning to be more masculine.
And smelling it again now i can tell the leather is like the smooth base that completes the fragrance.

I love more more when i wear…oud pungent with sweet notes is a perfect mix…and what a performance! !!yes remember m7 sometimes in the air. What a parfum!!!!

For me this one was a blind buy, and I’m overwhelmed by its charme. The warmth it spreads, the underlying spiciness, and yes, I agree with rob2b (see below), there’s also some sexual suggestiveness. It advances a bit like a softer and sweeter version of the magnificent “Homme” by the same brand, which comes as no surprise considering that they are both creations by the mighty M. Ropion.
This one is classified as unisex, but I’m pretty sure that a survey would bring as a result that 99% consider it a masculine. That said, I think it could also fit a lady. If two people of different sexes wearing this one at the same time would meet by chance, I bet a happy and fulfilling relationship is the result.
    *****

I was looking for a sweet scent with vanilla, but not too feminine or bubblegum.
this is for me, because the oud makes slightly bitter and not cloying.
9/10. great sillage and longevity. It does not look like m7 and oud absolut but Fahrenheit parfum without the rum. only fault but very little … maybe it’s a little caramel.

A truly warm deep spicey journey with a touch of amber/vanilla sweetness at the drydown. Love this mysterious scent with awesome longevity and his own personality. This underdog was a easycop for me!

A rather sexually suggestive fragrance, where ambergris combines with woody and ambery notes, to sweet, lustful and spicy effect! It smells like spiced honey with urine and sexual afterglow.
SOUL has the olfactory profile of an animalic, oudy Arabic attar, which is somewhat unexpected, considering the house it comes from, which is the embodiment of Italian left-field chic. If this were called “Mukhallat Royal”, it would probably have gained more attention and got the customers it deserves.
For me, this is a 10/10 fragrance and extremely well-done in its genre.

I am extremely shocked that “Costume National Soul” is not being talked about much more within the fragrance community? I am also extremely shocked that other’s have not mentioned the huge resemblance to the highly sought after discontinued Yves Saint Laurent fragrance M7 & it’s re-edition M7 Oud Absolu.. Soul may not be an exact clone of M7 or M7 Oud Absolu but it is in my opinion very very similar! I definitely think that this fragrance was inspired after M7 so if you enjoy M7 & M7 Oud Absolu I highly recommend that you try Soul!

This stuff is ridiculously delicious… Spicy, dark, leathery, a little bit of incense, dark resiny Amber, and what someone described it best earlier almost like a cherry chapsticky scent at the end with with the leather, and patchouli….this juice is phenom….I feel like it’s more on the masculine side of unisex, but I can see why women would like it cuz it just smells so damn good… Mysterious, mature, sexy, confident… Not a daytime work scent… A night out scent for sure.

I’m really surprised to see this classified as unisex – to my nose, there are no feminine qualities whatsoever. This is a heavy fragrance – long lasting – the longest lasting I have. It shares similarities with homme, but has an oudy/honey smell that seems to differentiate. I think his is a fantastic scent and the quality is undeniable. To me, it stays pretty linear (and strong) – and just keeps pushing out for what seems like forever. I initially loved this, but have since grown away from the beasts like this because they wear me out. This is a great smell – and semi-daring. Go for it.

If you like un Bois Vanille, you really should try Soul (Costume National).
The same thing, but better sillage/longevity and less nauseating.

I stumbled upon a bottle of this new Costume National Soul at a profumeria so I sprayed some on my wrist.. This is just my first impression of this fragrance.. As soon as Soul hit my skin I was reminded of Yves Saint Laurent’s M7.. This fragrance opens up with spicy citrusy notes but you can still feel the warmer sweeter notes in the background.. The oud which is in the heart of this fragrance is noticeable throughout and it is complimented by a nice mild leather note.. As the spicy citrusy opening begins to calm down a bit the oud becomes more noticeable and the sweeter notes in the base begin to take over.. There is a prominent amber note in the base which sweetens this fragrance along with a very nice vanilla which is also complimented by patchouli.. Soul is definitely inspired by the much sought after M7.. In my opinion it does smell a bit more like the Oud Absolu rather than the original M7 but I suggest all fans of either M7 to check this fragrance out.. It is very similar to M7 but it still has it’s differences and it’s own personality.. Do not compare this fragrance to the quality of M7 but appreciate this fragrance for what it is.. Overall this is a great fragrance, it performs very well and I think it will definitely be appreciated by most fans of M7..

“Warm, sensual and pure” they say.
It would be more “very warm, spicy and strange” to me.
Strange because there is this hot/spicy/woody atmosphere like if you just found a mysterious spice shop run by an old woman in a peruvian desert.
Main notes are pink pepper, cardamom, leather and oud. Vanilla only come later and softly in the drydown.
    Good experience.

My first impressions were of a spice Bomb that has something in common with 21, though I haven’t worn that one recently enough to be certain. Longevity went on and on and while I did like the overall effect, I found that until about 8 hours had passed it was a bit much. I’ll try it again with a lighter hand next time.
