Description

Sotto Voce or whisper is a classic feminine fragrance, which is dominated by dry, woody notes with a fruity opening and floral-spicy nuances in the heart. Woody notes appear from the very beginning (rosewood), together with fruity accords (plum and peach) and coriander. Flowers in the base soften the strict and dry woody notes: tuberose, heliotrope, orange blossom and orchid. The base includes: vanilla, sandalwood, Tonka beans and musk.

The perfume was created by Sophia Grojsman in 1996.

Velvety fruity – warm woody – powdery
    Color impression: tiger yellow
By kindness of a friend I am trying this forgotten gem of yesterday on my wrist. It is one glorious nocturnal fruity perfume with effervescent and dense peach/apricot top that veers into refined velvety woodsy powder. By the first whiff, remnants of memories of Sublime by Jean Patou and Gucci Rush revived like a ray of early morning sun through my heart.

I loved Sotto Voce so very much, it’s so sad Laura Biagiotti doesn’t make it any longer, me too: We want it back!
-But recently I found a disent replacement (no one can fill Sotto Voces shoes), nevertheless, my new Pomellato Nudo Amber is very close 😀

@anessa @rossiniopera @smellssogood. I would like to thank Anessa again for sending me a pm, as I would not have seen the clarification here. I was upset by what I thought was an unjust criticism, so decided to avoid Sotto Voce reviews page. Having read Anessa’s pm and the latest posts here I do realise now what has been going on. As I said I normally do not look up profiles, so was blissfully unaware of the whole thing. What still remains beyond me is why would grown people play such silly games as creating multiple versions on themselves online. Thank you all once more for giving me my peace of mind back.

The “odd” top of Sotto Voce’s bottle is a stylised tuning fork-a device used to adjust musical instruments to the right tone, hence the tapping in a commercial. Sotto Voce in musical terms means lowering the tone. This perfume is inspired by music, what is also reflected in the notes- precious woods of which instruments are made of, finished off with a scent of a woman who is playing it.

Laura Biagiotti, whose fragrance ROMA was such a game changer for me during my trip to Italy, teamed up with her nose (and what a nose) Sophia Grojsman to create this absolutely beautiful, enchanting, cool, floral and vanilla based charmer. Sophia Grojsman was going through a heliotrope phase, and while not as flowery and powdery as Paris by Yves Saint Laurent, this is a sweet powdery subtle scent for a young woman (or older foolish woman like me) insisting on wearing fragrances for the youth of yesteryear. Vintage fragrances are my favorite. I can’t live without them. One whiff of this fragrance and I’m in heaven before getting up there.
The bottle and packaging is very pretty. It is feminine in it’s pink theme. The glass bottle comes with a stopper that comes off and look like a metallic forked utensil of some kind. Very odd. In the TV ad the wearer clicked on the bottle as if to announce dinner. I don’t know if this was meant to be an evening gala perfume or dinner party perfume. It is far too relaxed and light which to me speaks of day wear. It can be worn with an evening dress or cocktail dress at night, too, however. The scent is not complex and it might have more in common with some other lovely fragrances by Sophia Grojsman like her Diamonds and Rubies for Elizabeth Taylor, Sun Moon And Stars for Karl Legerfeld Tresor for Lancome, while also having some things in common with Ex-Cla-Mation for Coty and Chloe Narcisse. If you like those kind of perfumes, the fruity floral kind, this should be a sheer delight. It is indeed fruity and floral, with a vanilla and woodsy aroma to die for.
The first spritz of Sotto Voce smells just like what the other reviewers and wearers have said. Smells like wood, rosewood or mahogany wood surface on a piano or the body of a violin or stringed instrument. It does have a symphonic musical air. It smells of a string quartet, of a charming Schubert chamber music, the Trout Quintet perhaps. This is musical to me. It caresses the nose as a melody would the ear. The woodsy note and coriander are not too much, just right but detectable. Then you get a very juicy and sweet peach as only Sophia Grojsman could formulate. Peach dessert with plum. A very fruity gourmand type of fruit bowl. Summery and delicious, feminine and uncomplicated as carefree youth. This is a girl in a concert in a pink dress and bow, the center of attention of passing glances. The sweetness and demureness is lady like with floral notes of tuberose, but not at all a mega tuberose like FRACAS never. This is a light tuberose very discreet. There’s orchid and orange blossom and heliotrope. So yes it’s floral and the orange blossom adds to the fruity body with it’s citrus floral scent. The orchid is like hair shampoo orchid scent, and would smell good as it clings to the ends of your hair. The heliotrope is powdery and almost a violet. Purplish and powdery.
At the dry down there is a very lovely vanilla that smells amazing, sweet but deep, a vanilla flower that goes to your head. A heady vanilla with powder notes. There is no musk to my nose or anything green. This is a good vanilla but it does have some woodsy notes coming from sandalwood. This is a good sandalwood but I believe the vanilla is doing more of the work here. A lovely and typical vanilla dry down similar to the dry down in such vanilla based fragrances like Chloe Narcisse and even Victoria Secret Rapture. What a pretty perfume of angelic music. Sotto Voce, a whisper of love a light melody and musical passage to enchant the wearer and the wearer’s friends in passing.

    Sotto Voce (Whisper)
This is an absolutely beautiful woman’s perfume!
I read the reviews and was fascinated enough to order it from eBay. My bottle is shaped like a musical instrument a cello or violin in a clear glass bottle. The liquid is a pastel pink. Sotto Voce is a Sophia Grojsman and she has made so many winners that I have in my collection: Ex-Cla-mation, Diamonds & Rubies, Sun Moon Stars and Tresor among them. I think this has a unique quality that sets it apart from other Sophia Grojsman perfumes. First off, the scent comes off as fruity with a very juicy ripe peach that dominates the top notes. A delicious peach not too far from the peach scent in Tresor and in Diamonds & Rubies. The sweetness is feminine and summery and not too mature or deep. In fact this fragrance, like the peach in Ex-cla-mation can be worn by younger girls in their early 20’s. And yet it is sophisticated with an early emergence of mahogany woods. This smells like a wooden concert stage and I see a piano or string orchestra. This is a light woodsy floral, subtle and sweet. Charming. It’s like a ballerina or musical student, an up and coming pianist who smells of this in the halls of Juilliard.
The top notes are sweet fruity with peach and plum, but early on it also gets floral with tuberose, heady, almost like an egg plant scent, with a creamy buttery white cream scent, gourmand almost. Then it becomes a fresh orange blossom, followed by a very distinct powdery heliotrope. I also detected an orchid note. The florals go from powdery to soapy and a bit like a really fine hair spray mist. Never too heavy. A light mist with a sweet orchid scent. The florals are just so lovely. The orange blossom note is similar to Sun Moon Stars but I find this fragrance to be much sweeter and more subtle. It is also more floral because of the tuberose. So bottom line if you like florals this is for you.
The dry down is woodsy with sandal wood a really pretty and intoxicating inky sandalwood slightly evocative of the sandal in Samsara, but like it’s moniker, a whisper. This is a quiet little fragrance, a sweet seductive whisper, an invitation to pleasure and to music. It smells like a young girl in love with her music teacher. She knows he loves how she smells in this fragrance so she puts it on while sitting next to him during lessons. When I was little I had a crush on my piano tutor but it was very short lived as it became too expensive for my mother to pay him. The last day of lessons was very sad for me but I know what it is like for a young girl to have a crush on a nice older man, someone one admires and looks up to. This fragrance always reminds me of those days at the piano bench.
The vanilla note in this is fabulous! It’s sweet creamy and lasts for so long that it takes up so much of my day. It is great to identify the notes as they waft up to your nose during the many hours it wears on your skin. I apply on my neck and cleavage. The scent is so wonderful. I wish this was still selling in stores and was more recognizable as a Sophia Grojsman fragrance. This is probably her lesser known perfume but I’m here to sing it’s praises. Love it.

I’d heard that this perfume smelled like music and being a singer I had to check it out. A friend of mine wears this and it’s very nice on her. She is a lounge singer and this is her signature scent. I don’t see this is a lounge singer type of scent but it is very sweet and soft, powdery, feminine, but quiet, like a little girl at her first concert with a program featuring Mendelssohn, Mozart, Bach, or Tchaikovsky. This is a pink scented orchid perfume on me. It’s sweetly floral and with the powdery heliotrope and vanilla, it’s heaven. It’s like little music notes and arpeggios floating up into the air. There is a mahogany woody note that is strange and takes some getting used to but its only at the top and opening note which goes away after a while. The perfume mostly smells like flowers and vanilla and a very sweet peach, that peach that Sophia Grojsman kept adding into her concoctions like Tresor by Lancôme Karl Lagerfield’s Sun Moon Stars. This is very similar to Sun Moon Stars but it’s more floral and there’s also a very distinct orange blossom and even more vanilla. In Italian Sotto Voce means “In A Low Voice” or “Whisper”. This is a soft whisper of a fragrance, subtle, discreet, feminine. If you go from wearing Opium or Bal a Versailles to this little baby powder, you’ll be shocked at the extremities from one end of the fragrance spectrum to the other. This is more my kind of perfume. I do wear the occasional heavy perfume that is not fresh or light powdery but I much prefer this type of powdery fruity floral. And the packaging and the bottle is so cute. I like how it looks like a cello. Inhale this scent and let the peach, heliotrope, orchid and vanilla clouds whisk you away to Heaven.

    SOPHIA GROJSMAN’S SOTTO VOCE
UN SUSSURRO IRRESISTIBILE: AN IRRESISTIBLE WHISPER
Sophia Grojsman is a master perfumer/nose who brought us such masterpieces as: Yves Saint Laurent’s Yvresse Champagne Passion by Elizabeth Taylor, Diamonds and Rubies by Elizabeth Taylor, Vanderbilt by Gloria Vanderbilt Sun Moon Stars by Karl Lagerfeld, Kashaya by Kenzo, Lalique, and the more popular Tresor by Lancome as well as Volupte by Oscar de La Renta. It is no wonder then that her Sotto Voce is in the same league. This beautiful perfume was created for fashion designer Laura Biagiotti in 1996. Biagiotti’s Roma from 1988 was a big hit of a fragrance but this one is more appealing to me. At it’s launch in Madrid Spain, European royalty attended a gala event with opera singers and a 19th century atmosphere recreating the costumes from the Claudia Cardinale Italian film The Leopard. This is a breathtakingly beautiful fragrance. It’s a powerhouse 90’s fragrance at a time when the gourmands had not yet taken over the business but when frags contained some sort of “gourmand” note like peach, plum, vanilla, but it was never the strongest player. This one opens up with real rosewood, mahogany. It fits the look of the bottle which is supposed to resemble a musical instrument like a violin or cello. The woodsy note in the opening is unique as most head notes do not contain woodsy notes which are normally in the base. But here the woods evoke a distinct wooden musical instrument. An then you get plums and peaches, lush, ripe and even sexy. Sotto Voce has a floral heart but it’s not heavy on flowers, otherwise the wood note would disappear. These are flowers I adore: orchid, heliotrope, orange blossom and tuberose. They don’t necessarily blend well together especially tuberose and heliotrope who appear to be competing with each other. This dissonance of notes made me think that it’s supposed to wear like your perfume is playing music, but not an actual melody that has already been composed, it’s more like the sound of orchestra musicians as they tune up their instruments before a performance at the symphony. To my nose the strongest floral accord is the orange blossom which is easier to combine with the plum-peach notes at the top. The orchid is fragrant and feminine, somewhat exotic and very romantic. The dry down is woodsy. It has sandalwood, beautiful sandalwood. I don’t detect any vanilla but it’s probably there. This was already such a sweet heady fruit-scented perfume at the beginning and so it would make sense the vanilla is there to enhance the sweetness. And let’s talk about the bottle. What a gorgeous bottle. It’s made of glass and the stopper is like metal prongs and it’s rather large. It’s rare to find a stopper like that. This is really such a gorgeous romantic perfume. It wears like a formal evening fragrance for dinner parties, galas, the theater, the symphony, the opera, the ballet, or a romantic dinner, a wedding perfume, a gala black tie and evening gown affair. They don’t make them like this anymore. This fragrance was never reformulated and still sells on ebay. You have 2 versions eau de parfum and eau de toilette. Both have the same fragrance and are both quite strong and wear like eau de parfums. If you have over 100 bucks to spend on one fragrance please make it this one. It’s divine. It’s so beautiful. You have never smelled anything like it. I wear this all the time right now and cant’ stop smelling my wrist. I am wearing it all month long and for Christmas and New Years Eve. Merry Christmas

I can`t describe just how much I ADORE this perfume! My all time favorite! Timeless classic! I wish every single day that Laura Biagiotti brings it back….it smells divine from the very first moment until 3 days later when I can still smell it on my pillow. I love that it doesn`t change (I have problems with perfumes becoming completely different after half an hour…). I bought an open bottle on Ebay and I couldn`t be happier. I tried Sun Moon Stars after reading reviews that it`s similar to Sotto Voce. While it`s somewhat similar, it has disgusting sweetness to it that gives me headache. Nothing compares to Sotto Voce. I wish I could have a bottle of it forever!

Dear, this is one miracle! It almost smells with old wooden musical instruments in an orchestra chamber, plus some wonderful powdery vanilla and heliothrope. The woody notes are just amazing here! If you ever smelled an old piano or clarinet, you’ll know what I mean – it’s the mahogany. But I’m sure that sandalwood and other woods are present here as well. I fell for it immediately once it was released, I used one bottle, then I got another one and they stopped producing it, what a shame! I heard it was created as mourning/ tribute after some famous opera was destroyed in a huge fire. Well, maybe this is why it is gone, as every mourning has an end? But in this case I’d rather it was a tribute, not mourning, then it may have been still available:(

The reason I fought on eBay to acquire a bottle of Sotto Voce is because I love Laura Biagiotti’s creations and want to own them all! I was also intrigued by the notes and descriptions, and expected to receive something amazing. Sotto Voce is a nice perfume, that starts off as a VERY clean yellow floral. Think Poeme. In fact I’m sure I smell mimosa, but none is listed. After a good couple of hours it starts to mellow, and I can detect the vanilla and orchid, and towards the drydown a bit of musk too. I get no woods, none whatsoever. In fact I think it belongs to the floral category and not the oriental woody, and I found this very misleading in terms of expecting something full of spicy plum and rich woody notes blended with subtle florals, when I got an inoffensive floral with no spices at all. I like it, I don’t love it. If it wasn’t this hard to find I would probably give my bottle away, but now I will keep it purely for ‘crazy perfume collector lady’ purposes:)
Edit: From the middle notes down it is very similar to Sun Moon Stars, which can be found anywhere for really cheap (in case you do not want to pay the prices eBay sellers are asking for Sotto Voce! I am doing a wrist to wrist comparison and they are very close cousins indeed!)

Fruty floral the old way and o what a pleasure.
Not surprised Sophia Grojsman is the nose behind it.
I think my vintage one has tamed down a little – took a biiiiiiiiiiig spritz over halft of me and now the plums danses wildly around me.
It is so refined like a good old vine – so smoth and delightfull.

i liked narcisse of chloe, which was stopped and than launched again. if i had wishes to the golden fish they would be: launch again Sotto voce of Laura Biagiotti and Helmut Lang by Helmut Lang.
In my opinion the Sotto voce radiates something of cherry, something like the tase of black cherry in the Jack Daniels, very tasty. Sweet and feminine. Beautifull and light scent.
    Yes, please launch it again

  19. :

To my nose Sotto Voce always smells like the Italian love-child of CK-Eternity and Sun Moon Stars. It conjures memories of both, yet is not one of these all the way:
It’s not as loud and fruity as Eternity, yet it has fruity notes that are very deliciously present. It’s not as sensually powdery like Sun Moon Stars, yet it’s sexy in a soft vanilla scented powdery dry-down.
To me, a mix of both great scents, Italian style. For al those that like one or both and would love to find a third of the same ‘family’.
Silage is great. Longevity is: a perfume that goes through all the notes in about 5 hours. If you find it you really should sample it.

Very classy, but a bit overestimated judging by its price. Maybe because it’s a rare find nowadays. Not bad, but doesn’t match ‘Venezia,’ just my humble opinion. 🙂

I like this but not crazily in love with it anyway. First thing comes in mind, instantly reminds me of Karl Lagerfeld Sun Moon Stars but lighter and without that sharp tangy pineapple found in KLSMS. Few second afterwards this is so much like Lancome Tresor. However, Tresor comes rounder and smoother….feels like true cashmere blanket. While IMO Sotto Vocce still has some rough edges. I dont’ know which particular notes/ingredients that made this happened….but that’s what I feel.
If you notice KLSMS and LT were made by the same perfumer, Sophia Grojsman which often created similar fragrances. Other than KLSMS and LT, Laura Biagiotti Sotto Voce, Paloma Picasso Tentations and Boucheron Jaipur are 3 other examples that resembles to one another.
At first, I disagree with her and asked myself….”Why so much effort to produce something that always reminds you of her late fragrance over and over again?”. But later…I made peace with myself and think….”Well, maybe that’s her message…that’s her signature, creating something that always reminds us of her creation. So, that her adherents will always found out which are hers, even without having to browse our finger off on our beloved website”.
All in all, although barely in love….I love the bottle, so the search continues

my fav ever!!! I used to wear it 10 years ago, and I finally have one, I only wear it from time to time to save it as much as I can, because I can not find it anywhere now..

Starts out as a really sweet, fruity-floral-vanilla fragrance. Pleasant for daytime use. As I only have a vintage boxed sample I’ll save it for those times I want to smell super-sweet! Sweeter than my usual tastes, but still a keeper. I’d probably enjoy smelling it more on others, but that’s unlikely as I read that it’s discontinued. Far superior to most sweet perfumes I’ve experienced, without those nasty, jarring synthetic notes I’ve come to expect. Good lasting power too. The dry-down is gentle but those sweet notes just dominate the woodsy notes on my skin.
I find Sotto Voce far superior to the over-poweringly sweet Venezia Pastello. Venezia, however, remains my favourite in the Laura Biagiotti line. Love Roma too.

I have tried to mix “Tocade” by Rochas with “Desnuda” by Ungaro to get a similar scent to “Sotto voce” and i think it works. At least on my skin it works. I have sprayed this mix on my one wrist and original “sotto voce” onto other wrist and they smell very much alike then.
P.S. i didn´t mix those two in the botlle, but sprayed one over another one.

My newest LOVE!! I’ve had a sample of this for several months and have only tried it once. I thought it was very very similar to LB’s Venezia then, only softer, quieter.
So yesterday, I tried them side by side and found that they are very different. Venezia is very fruity in the opening and stays fruit throughout, and Sotto Voce is a little fruity (peach and plum) but ultimately more woody. I am loving woody scents lately so I much preferred SV over the Venezia.
I then showered and wore the SV all day. It had good longevity (about 4-6 hrs on my skin), although it stays very close to the skin. “Sotto voce” is a whisper and that describes this beautiful scent perfectly. It’s a whisper that says, “Love me”.
Absolutely gorgeous, sweet, soft and woody oriental, with all the requisite oriental notes of tonka, vanilla and sandalwood…just beautiful.

It was a gift. I guess there is no more suitable perfume present for musician then Sotto Voce. I loved the bottle at first sight and i LOVED the fragrance at first sniff. Oooh, what a delight it was. Wearing it i felt like Venus, all feminine, self-asured, irresistable on a ”sotto-voce”-way. God, i miss this perfume! Undiscontinue it, please!

Very hard to find for a reasonable price this one is very feminine and amazing perfume! The name truly speaks for itself, it is not loud but sexy whisper. Got my full 75ml edt bottle today with amazingly low price accidently on some trading site!!!! I am soooo happy!!!!
This is bit different from what i remembered it to be, but it is even better than i thought i would be!!!!
Very yummy and sugary scent with long lasting staying power. The peach and plums totally got me, i wanted to eat my wrist! The tuberose and heliotrope give nice addition to the scent. It is sooooo well balanced and one of the best and outstanding fragrances i have ever tried! It definitly stands out from all others Sonja Grojsmann creation truly unique and non-replacable with anything else.
Ladies, do get it if you have extra money to spend!!!

Sotto Voce is one of the best fragrances ever.
I still have 2 bottles that I hold on to.
I love spraying it onto my wrist and I can smell it all day.
The scent is warm and feminine.
It is a shame that it is no longer made and it makes it even worse that it was replaced with Donna Due and Laura Rosé.
If you are looking for something similar, try Sun Moon Stars which is not exactly the same but smells like an unfinished version or rejected prototype of Sotto Voce.
Still, not the same but made by the same perfumer and there are obvious similarities.

Every time I put this on, I was to eat my arm. This just smells so good! I get this really soft, sweet woodsy note, like the smell you get when you open a wooden chest. The peach and plum are noticeable, but the overall effect is still very soft and quiet. It’s my ultimate comfort scent and I’m so sad to see it’s practically impossible to find.. The bottle is really cool too! The top is a tuning fork that you detach to spray the perfume and when you take it off you can hear and feel it vibrate slightly.

I got intrigued by all these raving reviews so bought a miniature of Sotto Voce on Ebay. It starts out sweet and has an overpowering and almost cloying accord of vanilla / fruit syrup. Later it becomes a distinctly powdery, white floral scent that’s less sweet and airier than before.
About 5 hours later I get a sweet, peachy orchid scent that’s less powdery and more woody now. To be honest, the vanilla in the beginning ruined it for me but it does recover after the glitch.
A very feminine, soft (after the top notes) and powdery floral scent. Not what I was expecting from the notes though.

Whoever decided to take this one off the market should be punished by taking away his/her sense of smell. Why would you want to deprive anyone of one of the most delicate and well balanced perfumes I have had the joy to wear? Its solid consistency is also a quality I admire in it. Long lasting and embracing, you can wear it like a gorgeous garment. It will make you feel confident and happy at the same time. My heart goes to poor Sophia Grojsman. She created a subtle “soft tone”, only to watch it end up being suffocated by the rattle of much inferior perfumes.

I bought a mini of this out of curiosity, and because I loved Roma so much. This is nice, but it’s powdery. Unfortunately I get bad headaches from any powdery smells, so I probably can’t give Sotto Voce the credit it deserves. It is a beautiful perfume on the right person, though. I just can’t wear it myself. I get the peach and the tuberose, and the vanilla and musk on the dry down. Would be perfect on a summer night.
