First thing that sticks out is the pyramid. Masculine/feminine notes that look so intertwined that this would be a first of it’s kind type of scent. Nope! It’s all about the rose and citrus notes while the darker notes settle in the background and pretty much stay there. This last all day but don’t blind buy it based on others reviews. It leans way more feminine than masculine also. Birch.smoke, oud, tobacco, benzoin, are light at best.

initial blast of camphor that settles into a green jammy sweet rose on top then incense then dry fermented rose petals with campfire smoke then an herbal note

I also found myself in the big red rubber eraser territory that another reviewer mentions. Smolderose instantly reminded me of the two other fragrances that I’ve tried so far from JS- The lovely green mandarin from Treebuoy’s opening stages and also that unmistakeable salt note borrowed from Selperniku. Unfortunately on my skin the drydown seems a bit muddled, a salty sweetness laced with smoke that I don’t think works for me.

Loved the open, then it turned into a rubber eraser. Blech!

Admittedly, Im not a big fan of rose on my skin. I just do not enjoy smelling it on me. However, I can really appreciate a rose accord and enjoy smelling rose in general. Unfortunately this rose fragrance does not fall within that genre for me. This, to my nose, is a very harsh smelling rose. Almost to the point of an acrid, nose burning smell. Not a good one for me.

Smolderose version 2.0 is not what I was hoping for. Wish I’d smelled the original prototype send-out.
I’ve been on the hunt for a smokey, smoking, incense-laden rose perfume for over a year, and have yet to find the perfect thing, or any rose perfume with a heavy dose of incense and smoke at all. All the promised perfumes and attars that I have tried are low-dose or no-dose on the smoke and incense. Nice, but not what I’m looking for. (Looking at you, Aramis Calligraphy Rose, Amouage Lyric Woman, Ame Sombre Grand-1 by Sultan Pasha, and the latest Amouage Tribute attar available on eBay. 🙁
This oil and edp both play out the same way on me and my mother: it reminds us both of a cheap floor cleaner. It’s lemony (not a good note to tinker with in American perfumery) and a cheap, cheap, middling rose. Doesn’t last very long, and mostly all I think is… “Ew, why?”

WOW! That’s all i have to say… this stuff is unbelievable. so sultry, and ouddddd. i put a tiny bit of a sample on and, it took like 5 min and it went from a 2 to a 10. it exploded on my skin. i just wish there was a edp spray, like the new sample i received, it’s a prototype forgere. it also is a beaut. Very piney and lots of depth. thx so much for tha samples mr.january john.
    GR8 JOB!

I smell the rich, resinous base notes immediately; the citrus top notes are lost to me, though in their place I find very brief medicinal quality. A dark rose note blooms quickly and becomes the centerpiece of the composition, topped by a dusting of spice. I catch little hints of tar and castoreum here and there, and some unlit pipe tobacco. There is smoke, but not as much as I expected from the name. As things begin to mellow the various woods come to the fore and there is a fair amount of pepper, which slowly dissipates until only the wood remains. Longevity was upwards of 8 hours, which one me is pretty good.

This perfume oil is smoky, ambery, and has a mysterious mixture of rose and citrus. The smoke is done very well and it lasts a long while. After about two hours much more of the amber notes and honey peek through and it mellows into something like rose dipped in gentle honey but with a spicy edge. Well into the day it’s still going, now fading to a resin-ish amber with some hint of vanilla and gourmand aspects. It’s a very strong perfume so only a bit is needed but I found this niche experience really interesting. It’s maybe a bit more on the masculine side or Eastern side of perfumery, but well balanced and exotic. Recommended.
