Description
“Even if one just tastes it, at once arouses a humour throughout the body and has a very healthy aroma” – Pedanius Dioscorides, around year 70 BC “Silphium (probably of the genus Ferula) was a plant that grew in the area of Cyrene, present day Libya, and was widely renowned as a spice, medicinal herb and perfume ingredient throughout the empires of the classical antiquity. It was praised by Greek philosophers and writers, as well as Roman emperors and cookbook authors. There were many attempts to cultivate Silphium, but they inevitably failed. It would only grow wild in a limited area of the north African coast. This is combination with its qualities as seasoning and medicine made Silphium the most valuable spice in the world, outshining both saffron and cinnamon. The demand for Silphium eventually became so overwhelming that it was harvested to extinction, and the taste and smell of the once greatest spice in the world was lost in time. Our rendition of this historical plant is created by researching surviving assumed relatives of Silphium, using aromachemicals (the molecular building blocks of scents) to create an accord that we feel represents what descriptions remains. This is set against a background of ancient incense, woods and leather” – Stora Skuggan. Silphium features top notes of Silphium accord and Cistus. The heart notes are Cinnnamon, Black Pepper, Tobacco, Ginger, Geranium and Clove. Base notes are Frankincense, Myrrh, Cedarwood and Leather. The perfumers behind Silphium are Olle Hemmendorff and Tomas Hempel.
Silphium was launched in 2017.

Spicy ginger that’s both warm and cool at times. Supporting notes are there but hard to identify. Fresh, good performance, above average longevity.

Simply gorgeous. An amazing find. Starts off with a burst of incense and lemon and dries to a soapy spice. Very energizing and mysterious. A new favorite for sure!

Spice, Spice and more Spice. This opens as a Soapy spicy onion…yes onion! As it settles, you can absolutely smell a bit of lemon protruding from the havoc. The ginger is what i would describe as pushy. It is the oppressor for sure and can be the very reason why you either hate or love this oddity. Boasting a few notably known sweet notes, this is anything but toothsome. The cedar is blended in nicely as it networks with the pepper for that familiar masculine vibe. In this stage, i’m suddenly reminded of Lomani AB Spirit Platinum but with waaaay better quality. This fragrance is as interesting as the bottle suggests. An odor only an alchemist can make.

Fascinating. I’d love to hear from someone who’s tried this!
