Cartier Roadster is such a peculiar fragrance. It’s certainly creative, but I am not sure I like it’s creativity.
As aromatic fougere’s go, this is an interesting take on it. Instead of the barbershop or clean citrus styling of Rive Gauche or GIT, Roadster tries to modernize the fougere for a new audience. But does it really succeed?
    I have to say no.
This opens with a minty citrus note. Quite juicy and sweet. Very nice execution. Had it stayed with this, I’d have really liked it, but it all goes quite wrong from then.
The mids combine the mint with vetiver. This could have been good, but combining the green sweetness of mint, with the brown dry scent of vetiver really doesn’t work here.
Vanilla then shows up, and tries to tie the whole thing together.
On paper this is great. In reality you get a scent that tries to balance sweetness with green notes, bitterness with dryness, and it just falls apart. The scent smells thin and screechy.
The “oriental fougere” style can be fantastic. Le Male showed that it’s certainly possible to do, and Roadster clearly smells like it’s trying to fill a similar space in Cartier’s catalog.
Sadly it accomplishes little of this, and comes across as garish and tasteless.
    Longevity is average 6-7 hours.
    Rating: 4/10

Roadster is theoretically a simple mint fragrance, yet able to exhibit such complex feelings. It has the Cartier classy signature and to me it evokes endless freedom, summer sunshine, optimism and refinement. Lovely.

I love this scent for a rainy day evening date with a beautiful girl. Always garnishes compliment. This also lures the interested girl into your scent bubble, which is very around 3 ft. So, has been my favorite for such occasion.
Very few girls get turned off. (1 or 2 thus far in my experience)
Safe blind buy. This was a blind buy for me, never regreted it, unlike the D&G light blue (Not comparable, I regret blind buying D&G LB)
    Now the scent.
Opens with a nice natural Mint. (Tops at 10 mins, then settles back)
Transition to earthy vetiver (I love the earthy scent, making it favorite for rainy day)
Ends up as a vanilla (Last hour)
I spray about 6 sprays on skin.
    Longevity – 8 hrs (7-9)
Sillage – 2 ft for 3 hours, After 3 hours, comes closer to 1 ft for 1 hour and then a skin scent with vanilla.

This is one of the best natural mint fragrances I’ve encountered. Mint is blended beautifully with a soft, mild vanilla and supporting vetiver. Roadster is a cool, casual, sophisticated fragrance. It has low sillage and I cannot imagine this could ever get overbearing, so spray with a heavy hand if you want it to be noticed. For me, it behaves less like an obvious “cologne” and more like a personal aura of fragrance that radiates very close to the skin, exuding such a fine, comforting, quality scent. Aesthetically, the bottle is one of the nicest in my collection, a beautiful piece of art. I love this fragrance- it can be worn any time: mint makes it relevant in summer/spring, but it is not a classic “freshie” as it contains labdanum/patchouli, which makes it more versatile for cooler temps. Again, it projects quite modestly, so cold weather would probably overwhelm it. A debonaire gentleman’s casual perfume for sure. Great job, Cartier!

Beautifully blended Mint, Vetiver and Vanilla, this juice is fantastic! On me longevity is great (8+hrs) and on clothes it lasts for days. The sillage is low, but it does envelope you in a wonderful little scent bubble about an arms length. I feel you can wear this Spring, Summer, Fall and possibly on mild Winter days. I don’t know if this fragrance is for everyone, I think you have to be a Vetiver lover to really appreciate Roadster. But, if you are a Vetiver lover I would highly recommend checking it out.

This smells like the house of the rich couple who lived across the street from me as a child in a subdued pink Victorian house in the middle of downtown. They had two English bulldogs.
This is absolutely niche scent, would be easily in that category in a stronger concentration with lower availability and higher price.
The open is cool and spicy and green and literal and natural. And dry like the most dry chardonnay imaginable.
I love cartier style too. The bottle does matter. This bottle looks great next to my other Cartier bottles which all are the highest quality presentation.
It is crushed mint plant leaves, stems, stalks, the whole thing. The vetiver and spicy patchouli notes are strong. The patchouli blends smoothly and seamlessly with the mint. As if one mintchouli plant got stepped on and mashed into earthy vetiver. And for me the vanilla is persistent.
I do agree with some other reviewers about the use of labdanum in this – I could do without it. It adds an authoritative heaviness and seriousness that I personally would prefer to be a fresher, or more floral, or peppery note. My goodness Mathilde, what this would have been if that were a geranium note instead!
I am not especially certain anyone would think it is sexy but it smells strong and powerful and rich and authoritative. And beautiful.

I was lucky enough to grow up in an era where we didn’t manicure our lawns (we called them “yards” back then) to death. Wild spearmint grew around our patio, and we let it. The breeze carried this scent into the window of my childhood bedroom and scented my youthful dreams. Long story short (too late!), spearmint does not automatically remind me of “toothpaste.”
Roadster’s spearmint is very well done, and mixes beautifully with the other notes to form an “outdoorsy” fragrance that balances masculinity and elegance. I won’t pretend my nose can tease out the other notes, but please don’t mistake this for unisex, though some have suggested it. This is all blissfully, marvelously, man.

Simple fragrance. Unique combination of mint and vetiver.
Authentic mint, green, woody and perfect for mature noses or vetiver lovers.
Beautiful for summer or winter. Good longevity with moderate projection and sillage.
Pleasant and great value for the super quality that you get.

Not a bad one, but the first 25-30 minutes is totally unpleasent and kill the whole composition. Very very oldfashioned, minty-earthy-herbal smell. Not saying this is a classy grandpa or barber shop smell, but nothing fresh or clean feeling what I expected from a summer frag. Rotten mint mixed with some sharp earthy notes. 30 minutes later when the vanilla notes getting stronger the scent becoming better, but nothing special, just vetiver+vanilla with a hint of patchouli. Pass it.
    – spring/summer, daytime scent, not too versatile
    – sillage is bit better than average, longevity is goo, around 8 hours on my skin
    – try before buy

Classy mint fragrance! First, it started with a huge blast of mint and vetiver that is very strong. Then, stays pretty linear with some development of patchouli and vanilla in the background. Great longevity 6 to 8 hrs.
Mostly a masculine mature scent (35+). Great versatility : casual, office, work and dates. Days and night.
Good projection and fair compliment factor.

    A Best Kept Secret…
I have a handful of Cartier fragrances which Roadster is near, if not at, the top. If you like vetiver fragrances with a “hint of mint”, add Roadster to your collection.
Roadster smells great, has decent performance, modestly priced, readily available, super flexibility, and not to mention, comes in a cool bottle that makes for interesting conversation. The list goes on and on…
Cool and refreshing on those hot South Carolina summer days – but with flexibility to be worn across seasons and to any event. Office safe and a crowd pleaser.
Final tally for Cartier’s Roadster is 4.4 stars out of 5 stars. I haven’t worn this in months, but today I realized this fragrance is a “best kept secret” rockstar..!! Highly recommend adding to any collection and throwing out a solid Love for the Fragrantica community.
Enjoy your day and happy fragrance hunting…

I do not get mint I get sandalwood bomb vanilla citrus and spicy. Smells very close to bond 9 I love NY for marriage equality to me. Don’t know if I will wear this I don’t hate it just very strange scent. I don’t care for the bond no 9 much to much. If anyone wants a goof deal on this pm me. I can’t wear this.

I can’t wait to get this off of me. It’s somewhat embarrassing. I’ve been wearing this for hours now hoping that something would change with the smell, but nothing has changed at all. I smell the mint, and very very slight vanilla if I try, but not in a gourmand-type way I thought it would. It just smells straight up like an old lady. It does not smell sweet at all. I bought based on the reviews here, and I learned my lesson. Probably never going to blind buy a cologne or perfume ever again.

I couldn’t have said it better than Fix’s description below. Patchouli garden in spring with some vanilla added to tame the rough edges. Beautiful composition. Relaxing and delightfully different.

Not everyone will appreciate this scent, as it’s not for the average Joe. Roadster doesn’t smell like your typical designer fragrance at all, it has a niche vibe, definitely unique and somewhat weird, yet can be very appealing to those who can see beauty of it.
Opening smells almost like a broken plant stems, very green and very minty, it is also the weirdest part of Roadster, which I enjoy. As it dries down those green and minty notes calm down, and then vanilla-vetiver-patchouli heart kick’s in, and that’s where Roadster starts to smell classy and elegant.
Cartier can create unique scents for sure. Great scent, but then again, it’s just not for everyone.

I used up my original bottle of this juice and purchased the latest formulation. Honestly I can’t tell much of a difference. And I doubt most people will notice a difference. My wife said she can’t tell a difference either. I admit I’m not an expert and picking out different notes. I don’t doubt those that say the new formulation is different to their nose… we are all different in what we can and what we can’t smell. Ignore the people that come here raving their vintage bottle is better. Test it out yourself. I guarantee a lot of you will still find it to be as classy as ever. Still an excellent cold weather fragrance IMO as well as my wife, sister and some lady friends. Women in my world often compliment me when I wear this, and that’s a big plus in my book.

I see..because the vial that I used today I believe is the latest reformulation. I know somebody that stil sell the first formulation of Cartier Roadster. Is it worth blind buying? Because that bottle doesn’t have tester unit to try for.

I tried pretty hard to like this. I liked the note breakdown, i kind of like liking things that are a bit eccentric… so I blind bought it.
But… it just smells like messy weirdness to me. Not interesting-weird, not intriguing-weird, but just sort of weird and not working. I felt cooled wearing it. I didn’t hate it. But it just doesn’t do anything for me. The melon-mint-vetiver-vanilla-patchouli mix just wasn’t a sensual or groovy experience for me. It just hovered in a space of non-functional, non-sensual weirdness. And never left. I suppose the end of the dry down was pretty decent but generic, and… i would never wear a fragrance for the end of it’s dry down. So… upon further review. This is a dislike.
Contact me if you want to trade something for it.
I’m getting more confident in what I don’t like. And what I like. But also I’m realizing sometimes, something takes a little bit of actual use to end up in a like or dislike category. This one took a little bit to figure out it wasn’t worth my effort. Like a pretty girl who doesn’t attract me really. It seems like I should like her… but then…why do I not?…fuck it I guess I’m just not into her. Like that for this one. Like that also for Armani Code Profumo, which, I liked at first. And also bvlgari aqua amara.
So.. I could sum my roadster experience more succinctly as… It’s a messy, dys-synchronous, muddled pile of notes that don’t go together well. Like a wedding where the families don’t want to be there, and everyone knows the couple will probably be divorced in a year.

This fragrance just does it for me. The mint, vanilla and vetiver combo makes my day bright. I think there’s a nostalgic factor for me on this one. Evokes sitting at my childhood barbershop on a summer evening. It’s still hot outside but I’m cooled off by a constantly blowing A/C. A lawn mower in the distance can be heard over the electric hair clipper, and Independence Day is just around the corner. Nobody’s in much of a hurry.
Roadster is loud in the beginning but paradoxically wears off faster than you’d think. I love the mint but if you’re thinking gum you’ll be surprised. This will always be in my collection. The discounted price you can get this for makes it an incredible cost for quality scent.

The opening is rather harsh and synthetic, but after 45 minutes the drydown! The vanilla-mint-patchouli combo is super smooth. 1-Million or Invictus lovers won´t probably like this scent, it´s totally different style. It´s classy, clean, calm…No attention seeker but you know it´s still present.
It´s been 16 hours since I sprayed it and I can still smell it on my wrist. Got this bottle as tester for 20 Euro and it´s solid 8,5/10 for me. Need to try more from Cartier for sure!

Oddly to me this smells like juicy fresh watermelon and mint leaf fruit salad. That eases into vanilla/mint/vetiver/patchouli. The second stage has a minty barbershop smell to it.
I’m in my initial exploration of it’s use. But so far…I was at first kind of unsure, as it smells…different…now I’m pretty sure I’ll like this blind buy. This is a Spring fall scent to me. There’s a brief period after the opening where it’s slightly cloying, but period for me that only lasted 10 minutes or so, before it smoothed back out again.
We’ll see with more use. So far it’s a like/love. Not a full love.

Roadster is a strange and deeply conflicted perfume. There are a few elements going on, but nothing really comes together as a cohesive whole.
The scent opens with a very sharp mint note with a synthetic chewing gum-like quality. The opening is also very sweet, probably due to the labdanum and vanilla accord. The smell reminds me of the taste of the chewy green spearmint-shaped lollies you can buy here in New Zealand – minty, sweet, and very intense.
Roadster is by no means a fresh scent, however. The dry down is vanillac, which clashes badly with the minty top. I get a bit of patchouli and only the vaguest hint of vetiver. Overall, it’s sweet, cloying and unpleasant – and as is the case with many fragrances I can’t stand, the performance is excellent. I also find it to smell very synthetic – I honestly don’t see how anyone could find this to be a natural smelling fragrance.
If you’re looking for a great mint scent, this isn’t it. Try Guerlain Homme Intense – it has a fresh, natural and slightly woody mint top which forms part of a marvelous mojito accord.

    3 out of 5

It may sound trivial but I love the bottle! I love the watch winder element. It’s a great little feature which helps to make using the perfume that bit much more of an occasion. These things matter. Perfume is a sensory pleasure and that should include the packaging as well. It’s rather like the old adage that the first bite is taken with the eye – the first smell is also taken that way too.
If you smell a bottle of Roadster that has been used, you will smell a glorious top note of mint and expect a similar glorious freshness. When you spray it and apply it, that’s exactly what you get … at first.
Wow – this one is durable. I think the projection is only moderate but I’m never entirely sure whether or not that’s just me getting used to it. I’m sure when I read a lot of reviews and comments about duration and projection that a lot of people become desensitised to their own perfume considerably more than they realise. But it is remarkably durable – of that there is no question. I wonder if the 13 people who gave their opinion of it as a poor or moderate lasting fragrance actually sprayed it on themselves or were even in the same room as the bottle when it was sprayed! If you want value for money you certainly won’t be complaining about this!
There is a nice mint blast at the outset. And initially you get that feeling you get when you spray a perfume with a high percentage of natural ingredients and it smells somehow fuller and better. But then things take a turn for the worse. The bergamot doesn’t last long and the vanilla takes a good three and half hours before it rears its head: when it does, it’s a bit like a chronically shy infant hiding behind its mother’s skirt and not coming out to play or to be sociable. The vetiver is a dry, ambery, dry-woody, dusty vetiver and I don’t really care for it. Perhaps it is the combination of other notes but it isn’t the best vetiver I’ve smelled by a long chalk. The patchouli is okay – it helps make the perfume last a long time without ever being obtrusive. But the problem I have with Roadster is the Labdanum. It’s too much and can give me a raging headache.
Interestingly enough, I would describe the scent as a heavy one, but not in terms of projection. It just sits there. I think a mint fragrance should be light and fresh but never heavy so I think Roadster fails on its own terms if it seeks to be a mint fragrance. I think Mathilde Laurent’s scents are a touch linear – they are pretty much the same smell from start to finish (so whether or not that’s good depends on you reaction to the scent) and they are durable (so you certainly get your money’s worth). Now, I think Roadster Sport is better than this, like quite a few of the reviewers here. I also acknowledge that the labdanum is a killer for me. I would take it out and replace it with more mint, a touch of oakmoss and a little lemon. It needs lightening a little. I think this one will be subject to some layering experiments to see if there is a way of salvaging the best notes and hiding the labdanum. Otherwise I shall have to admit I have made an error in buying this for myself.

The vanilla made me expect at least a mild sweetness but it’s not sweet at all. It’s actually very bitter in the beginning with a LOT of vetiver, very dusty/powdery, like tree bark, so bitter you’d think it was a vanilla scented cigarette. As it dies down vetiver moves back and the vanilla comes out until it finally ends with very minimum vetiver and a lot of vanilla. That said, the vanilla is never sweet, it just smells like talcum powder but not Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder talc, more like plain, ordinary talc for grown ups. You can’t really pinpoint the mint, all I could clearly tell was every time I smelt it, my nostrils felt very cold. Lasts a long time but the projection is only for very close quarters, like for when people hug you or whisper into your ear.

I tried this, because I was told it’s a great “mint-based cologne”. I’m a huge fan of mint (spearmint, particularly) so I thought I’d try it.
To be honest, it’s really nothing special. Just a basic “freshie” cologne; in fact, I accidentally bought the Sport version of this first, then I bought this one. …I prefer the Sport, as it’s got a more crisp clean feel to it, with a melon-like sweetness.
I mean, you can’t go wrong with this cologne, but it’s not a standout in any way. Well, actully the bottle is really cool, but like I was saying, you might find the Sport version a bit better. I did. This gets 6/10 for me, totally underwhelming but I’d easily give the Sport version a 7.5/10.

Feeling more like Spring instead of Winter, I had a chance to wear this in a mid-February day in Texas, where is reached almost 80 degrees. I remembered why I’m not the biggest fan of this fragrance – it’s a strong herbal mint blast that has a bit of a woody dry down. Nice bottle, good atomizer, and projects for a few hours and sits on the skin for at least 6 hours total.
As some recent posters pointed out, don’t do what I did and blind buy this! It’s very different, some will love, others will find it too out-of-place. It can really only be worn during Spring, I can imagine this being too much in the heat, while not totally fitting colder weather where gourmands and boozy fragrances are preferred.
I have a full bottle so I will break this out occasionally and give it a few more chances, but it’s a fragrance that I just have a hard time finding the occasion to wear.

Not really a good blind buy. Sample before you buy. Overall it’s a ok fragrance it has its place in suitable occasion more mature fragrance. More of a acquired taste type fragrance. I give it a A+ for its uniquenes never smelled a scent like it before. Overall solid B overall scent.

I blind bought this thinking this would be a super safe generic mint fragrance. However, it isn’t and opens up fresh and slightly fruity. It also smells somewhat similar to sweat after a workout. I did not detect that much mint but more of flowery, fruity sweat. I also think it smells like some fermented green herbs. Def not a blind buy.

This is my favorite – Cartier Roadster is luxury and indulgence.
I like the spearmint sniff …. you smell when someone wear it … kind of expensive tradition and legacy. Women like it, smells a little bit like Cartier Pasha- but not all that soap.
Highly recommended for every day use – evening ass well …….
Signature potential ? YES absolutely 😉

I hate to say it, since I normally like most Cartier creations, and especially most JC Ellena compositions, but I don’t – or rather can’t – like this one.
The mint, to me, smells like drywall and drywall joint compound. Rather chalky and unlike the mint in something like AA Herba Fresca, CdG Sherbet Peppermint, Molinard Eau Fraîche or Lutens L’eau Froide. Those scents do mint correctly.
This rapidly becomes an Iso E Super dominated scent and unfortunately, comes across as cheap, commercial and generic.
Maybe it will grow on me, but I’m not betting on it.

A very pleasing and sensual aromatic perfume. No chewing-gum mint. Perfect for office and special occasions. I’ve consumed three bottles of this so far.
2016: After buying a new bottle, I’ve detected it’s not the same scent anymore. It was much better in the past. I wonder what has changed to make it much less appealing!!!

An accord that impresses upon the mind the feel of metal – chrome tailpipes and bumpers on a vintage sports car back when it had 4 original miles on the odometer. The freshness of mint and vanilla in the wind while traveling on a sturdy, masculine, very welcome cruise down Iso E Superhighway. The simplicity of the structure is the key to its success. It’s not triangular or linear; it’s circular. It winds its way into its basenotes. It’s at once citrusy and woodsy and it has shape. Laudable use of Iso E Super. Captivating to the unsuspecting, but subliminal in its effect. A daily go-to for the person who values subtlety and innate class in a fragrance. An Aston Martin, a Morgan, an Auburn, take your pick.

It is cool that Cartier makes fragrances and they aren’t widely available so you can get something a little different that isn’t all over Macy’s or Ross or wherever. I tried Roadster and found it rather pleasant and light. My wife surprised me by finding it to be really masculine. It didn’t seem super masculine to me. I asked women at the mall what they thought (I had a sample I was carrying around) and the impression was basically, “good, but not great.” Liked, but not loved.
Sure, try it out, maybe it will work better with your body chemistry and environment. No one disliked it. Longevity and projection are definitely above average, which is a serious plus. It was quality enough to make me want to explore more in the Cartier line, but not planning on buying Roadster for myself.

Bizarre combination of mint, vanilla, vetiver and patchouli. And I put it in those words because it is really odd the smell of a semi-sweet vanilla crashing against the sour dryness of mint and vetiver.
At the drydown the patchouli starts to come up turning the scent into a very masculine and somehow powerful-old-barbershop smell (with the rest of the notes).
I also got the impression of a mix between Fahrenheit 32 and Guerlain Homme Intense, without the florals and rum respectively (also recommend trying those two if you are into these vibes).
The good thing is if you happen to like this scent, the ingredients seemed really natural and non artificial at all, so I’m sure of course it’s high quality all the way through.

The best mint based designer frag period. I love this scent. I love its longevity, complexity, depth and uniqueness. It is everything I look for in a scent. The fact that so many hate it is great for me…It just means fewer people smelling like me this Spring which by the way is the perfect season to don this amazing masterpiece. I’d even go so far as to say it has a NIche vibe to it. Its amazing that Cartier made a designer fragrance with this type of uniqueness and character. All thumbs up…
    DID I MENTION…I LOVE THIS SCENT…lol

I bought this purely based off of review hype, and man was I disappointed. Expecting a pleasing, masculine mint scent, I instead got what smelled like an old barber shop. If you want to smell like a sink full of old man beard trimmings and shaving cream, this fragrance is right up your alley. I tested this for three days and couldn’t wait to scrub it off of me, promptly returning the bottle for a refund after testing it. Try before you buy!
    Projection: 7.5/10
Longevity: 9.5/10, I couldn’t get this damn thing off of me
Scent: 3/10, I suppose some people might like this, but can’t imagine who.

New bottle and box! Ok, almost the same bottle they just changed the ugly plastic looking part to the same metal as the rest. I can’t wait to empty my bottle 🙂
Since I’m here I write a review about this favorite of mine. For me there is a special wheather for roadster which occurs in spring. You know when the sun is shineing, there is a cool breeze in the air. Its cold in the shadows but warm in the sun. When you wear a jacket when you go to work but lose it on the way home. The mint, the vanilla and patchouli and the vetiver finds its perfect balance in this kind of wheather. If it’s too warm it turns into patchouli and thats not a good scent for me when its hot. If its too cold the vetiver breaks the perfect balance of the notes and ruins it for me. A must try for spring and dont be afraid of the initial mint blast it will go away and you get used to it by time.

A chain store I usually check out fragrance’s were blowing out all of Cartier. I Picked up both Roadster and Declaration each 19.00….how can you go wrong! I tried Roadster and I like the woodsy/minty aroma giving it a clean fresh aroma not cloying rather versatile between the fall and winter
