    ★★★★½
As a 90s kid, I have a soft spot for aquatic fragrances, you know, those chemical formulas that snobs now look down upon just because they discovered Tom Ford’s private line in their local Sephora.
Aside from growing up in the 90s, I live in a country with a warm summer and beautiful beaches everywhere therefore aquatic/marine fragrances are usually ideal. Where I’m getting at is that I have tried quiet a few scents designed for summer wear, but this little beauty I didn’t know about… until now.
When you spray this on, you get the typical “sea spray” note that was revolutionary back then: calone. Now, calone doesn’t amaze me always, there are certain fragrances that are heavy calone hitters that I adore (Polo Sport, Horizon etc.) In this case, it is invigorating and nostalgic of the grunge era, when the beaches were dominated by Rip Curl and Reef.
After the calone-blast, the heart of Quasar remains watery but also turns a bit green and sweet (banana leaf). Now, I have banana trees in my country house, and after the rain the leaves have a very specific scent. The banana leaf note in Quasar is not literal, but it evokes a vague image of the actual fruit. In order to pinpoint the smell just imagine the isolated sweetness of ripe banana surrounded by damp green leaves. This is playful, fresh, alluring & definitely unique. That’s how Quasar smells for most of its lifespan.
After 8 hours of catching whiffs of this beauty, the base notes make a soft skin scent of dew (moss & cedar) wrapping the whole composition up successfully.
I am amazed because currently the creativity of designer fragrances is non-existent. I understand that right now, Oud Minerale & Sel Marin are all the rage -and those are the most creative ones- but nothing invigorates like a good blend of calone & other notes that can be found in some 90s offerings (after all, that was the trend back then with fewer IFRA regulations).
Quasar is unique, with an amazing performance for its genre and especially in comparison to today’s freshies. It has a similar character to CK Escape for Men, but I prefer Quasar (& I love Escape) I feel like turning on my N64 now, spray this on & enjoy myself.
-This review is based on a 2001 bottle of Quasar.

This one was meh to me. Sillage was moderate and longevity was ok (lasted about 3 hours on my skin and about 8+ on my clothes). I could faintly detect banana and the cedar was very prominent. I know this is discontinued but I don’t think it’s worth the 80-100$ asking price. I should’ve tested this before purchasing it. My bottle is about 99% full, so if anyone is interested in buying this, I’ll sell at a discounted price.

I remember 11 years ago… My mother went on a trip and she told me to ask for a perfume… she was on a place with many ‘duty free’ stores so I made a list and Quasar was one of the top 3 on the list… She returned home and gave me a bottle of “Adventure Quasar” instead of Quasar.. I’d never tried Adventure Quasar before and was love at first sniff, it became one of my favourite perfumes for spring and summer.. I treasured it for a long time since its discontinued and very hard to find.. but I was curious about Quasar.. then when I finished my bottle of AdventureQuasar, I started to look for the original Quasar and surprise… it was also suddenly discontinued “Too late” I thought… I always wanted a 90’s classic like this in my collection, but anyways… 🙁
Years and years after that… in fact, one month ago, I was at the local department store here in my city and at the perfume counters I spotted some boxes of Quasar and soooo cheap!! I was so happy that I bought one the next minute… the lady on the counter told me that was a clearance of discontinued and damaged items (damaged boxes and blabla)..
I sprayed on my whrist and yes.. the same scent that I used to remember from a very young age when I was just getting into the fragrance world and trying scents here and there looking for some personal taste… that day I was lucky to find a 75ml bottle of this gem and it’s so nice to have it!
It is a very “weird” kind of scent and maybe that’s why I like it.. it smells very ink-ish the very first minutes, like when you open a brand new magazine and smell couché paper.. like fresh ink next to a tray where you put some fresh fruits and many bananas… it’s tropical, aquatic sort of.. but sweet at the same time not sticky sweet.. it’s sweet in a very fruity vibe.. the bitterness of the oakmoss is perfectly balanced with the sweetness of a fresh banana, fruits and a calming and very clean lavender on the background, creating a very clean, fresh and different perfume.
I love the way it performs, excellent longevity (8+hours) and I think my favourite aspect is the “weirdness” of it.. its bittersweet.. but clean and fresh at the same time.. its a 90’s classic, and has all that vibe, perfect to wear it all year round and very original, theres no other like this one out there.. very different from what you see now (that’s something I always have in mind when I choose a perfume, it has to be different from what’s on trend and massive at the time)
Definitely a versatile fragrance fresh for summer, sweet enough for cold months.. not overwhelming but notorious, and that 90’s style… a cool throwback!!
    Greetings from Chile.

Quoting Donkey Kong from the craptastic late 90’s TV series: “Banana Slamma!”. That pretty much covers it. The bottle is a trap devised by Satan; it looks hella cool but is actually made of cheap plastic and comes to bits easy.
As an additional note my Quasar dates back to 2008 and the oakmoss seems slightly more dense. Really great stuff.

Quasar is very special. There is just nothing else out there, past or present that is even remotely similar to it, period. This is possibly the best aquatic mens fragrance, ever. I get the banana peel immediately, and the top fruity/aquatic notes never go away. 20-30 minutes or so and it deepens, with lavender smoothing it out and rosemary giving it sharpness. An hour or so and the base notes are there, giving it the most amazing woody depth. It may not be a true aquatic scent, but all the notes involved work together to make it feel as such. I have many bottles, and vintage is the best. Many compliments on this one from men and women alike. In the morning I use a non fragrant body wash, pat that dry and then use a non fragrant lotion. I spray in all the key areas, 4-5 sprays, and it lasts all day. Absolute projection MONSTER for me, and sillage is excellent. In fact, it lasts until I scrub it off the next morning. Too bad it was discontinued, I’ve got a stockpile because of this. I’ve been watching the pricing on Quasar, and in just one years time it has doubled in price. In 1-2 years you won’t be able to touch a 125ml bottle under $100.-150. US dollars. Grab this elixir of the gods at a good price while you still can. My absolute favorite mens fragrance.

There are few scents within this community that have the unsung hero lore that the original Quasar has. There’s just nothing else out there that smells like it, and the fact that it hasn’t budged from my favorites shelf in the last several years is a testament to it’s authenticity and originality. If I had to choose just 3 scents to wear for the rest of my life, Quasar would be in my elite 3 without any doubt.
It’s the banana fruit and leaf notes that give this ozonic, tropical anomoly it’s unique blueprint. Many claim a “newspaper” note is involved, but it’s really the banana leaf foliage that’s fooling the nose into believing so. I think one reviewer below me got it right when he wrote that Quasar starts off “a little messy”. I agree. The first couple of minutes is basiclly a chemical sage bomb, then shortly after, you enter the mossy laden rainforest.
There is no aquatic theme linked with Quasar. It’s an ozonic, green and damp experience that takes place inland. Closer to a deep jungle at the South American equator as opposed to the Pacific Ocean. So much so that you may find yourself feeling like you need a machete while knocking around town wearing this one.
Spray Quasar on in the summer time humidity for best results and only blind buy knowing that you’re not purchasing to smell like a store in the mall. Guys over 30 will probably like this best. I highly recommend.

Synthetic opening, but playful and pleasant at the same. I get green banana vibe, and probably yuzu (fruity notes). Mid notes – floral, mossy smell. Refreshing flowers with touch of oakmoss. Not playful as opening, but more natural scent. Base notes – woody in classic way. Oakmoss still here, with added cedar, sandalwood and soft patchouli.
Quasar was popular in late 90’s on my country, and very overlooked now days.
    Scent – 8
    Longevity – 8
    Sillage – 8.5

…becuase it has good longevity and silliage with the added fresh tropical fruity banana notes. Good stuff!

I’ve been using this one for some years, during summer. I must say, it’s a really great fresh scent. I get the fruity notes and some small hints of banana.
When I was in college I know I got a lot of compliments from girls 🙂
Good longevity and taking the price into consideration is something that I will buy until I can find it.

My husband asked me to re-order this and I was happy to oblige. I like it on him; I notice when he hasn’t worn it for a while and it makes a cameo appearance. He mostly wears Terre D’Hermes, Dior Homme, Habit Rouge, etc so Quasar is a complete change. Originally composed by Christopher Sheldrake I suspect the formulation lacks the finesse of its previous incarnation, however I like it anyway. Better than Bvlgari and Boss, I think, and not run of the mill anymore. It persists and wafts a freshness that is quite unique!

Quite synthetic smell within the 1st couple hours at the top notes it feels messy and hard to understand; I do get the banana leaf and some fruitiness but not very clear, however after the heart starts opening the rest is beautiful very fresh, clean scent and the dry down is somewhat sweet you can feel the cedar and patchouli with the lavender.
    I like it
Sillage and longevity are over average. Do not over spray because the opening is really strong.

Overly sour, salty, bitter opening. The banana is bitter in the beginning. Dried down, the sour/saltiness mellows down and it becomes sweeter – the banana is ripened I guess you could say. The herbs start to stand out. Great gym frag because of how cheap it is, it’s not musty, has good longevity and durability, and it’s inoffensive (so long as it’s dried down).

I still have my bottle from about 7 years ago. It’s still about half full and I wore it today for old times sakes. The opening is a chemically imbalanced mess but the dry down is nice. A bit different from the mainstream stuff available now. 2 banana notes? This would probably be as popular as Aventus if it was released now! Overall it’s a nice scent and safe enough to blind buy for the price.

  15. :

    Pros:
Imagine shaving cream in a scent.
    Cons:
The shaving cream similarity is there but with a fair bit of alcoholic/synthetic smack.
The bottle and fragrance are cheap.
    Upon application, chemical smell, heavy!
On the dry down, much better! Shaving cream. Cool, fresh, soapy, manly.
After a while it’s close to the skin, and what’s left there is $10 aftershave off the supermarket shelf.
This scent needed to have more invested in the quality and authenticity to meets it’s classic potential.

well i have my 125ml bottle . at first smells fresh and aquatic , and then turns into a spicy zesty cedar aquatic . doesnt smell like bannanas to me . bottle feels quite cheap , the cap is plastic and the gear rings that have the look of metal are actually plastic too . the juice color looks like toilet water . the bottle doesnt feel heavy at all its very light weight . but overall it smells very good but cheap at the same time . i think if you want something that smells of better quality then better off buying davidoff cool water as its almost similar smell .

Quasar is very fresh and masculine. I first tried in back in the late 1990’s, and I have not stopped using it since. Though it contains banana and fruit notes it is not very sweet. It smells almost aquatic to me. It is perfect for the summer months.

    Interesting, really.
I always wanted to try this scent, because I always heard good things about it.
I finally just bought a bottle online.
What’s interesting is…., I love this ‘simple’ clean , refreshing scent ‘not’ for many of the reasons on here. Most people seem to ‘love’ the top notes…, ( all of the fruits and sweetness), but.., me…, no.., that’s okay, but..; I ‘love’ the ‘dry-down!’
Wow, it’s kind of warm and herbally but, yet still clean. Last a long time, very subtel dry-down.
“Understed elegance” is how “I” would descrbe this scent. Very well done.

Very nice fragrance in the first half an hour. Beautiful top notes, very fruity. The banana smell is very good in this one.
Too bad that after half an our – an our it becomes dull. The entire top notes disappear and what remains is a detergent like smell
    Not recommended

This cologne is a real winner. People saying this smells chemical harsh or bad is absurd. I love the rosemary and banana leaf smell upfront. The vanilla comes into play with a mild tropical aquatic vibe. The quality is top notch el natural. Sillage is moderate perfect, longetivity 8 to 10 hours. I’m so glad to have purchased the big bottle last summer.

This is so different to anything else I own, the banana note is just so lovely(smells like krusha milkshake) with a rich creamy vanilla drydown and white musky and woody base.
It makes me feel good wearing this, especially when you know that the people around you that get a whiff, are smelling something unique to they’re senses..
Great sillage and lifespan,,like others have said, a true masterpiece.. 9 out of 10.. I love this stuff..

I have to confess that at first I was mostly attracted by the marketing elements of Quasar. The futuristic bottle looks like a device in some science fiction and the name Quasar suggests something radiant and full of energy. Well, what I smell might not match its appearance.
The opening smells like some typical men’s cologne. But it soon evolves into a smooth banana milkshake. Yummy! At the same time, I can smell some greenness, as if the milkshake is made with some real fresh banana. After 2 hours, the banana notes mellows to the background. What settles on the skin is a soft lavander smell. It stays very close to skin and lingers about 6h.
I wish the banana milkshake scent could stay a little longer. But it’s just my personal taste. I still like it very much as it is. It’s very refreshing in summer. If you’re looking for a non-aquatic fresh fragrance for summer, I’d recommend Quasar.

For a scent to be almost 20 years old and still smell modern is a huge achievement. Not very well known and is easily found at a discounted price on the net and in stores. This one is like a banana sweet, barbasol soapy, mossy woody marine aquatic. This one has a lot going on in terms of notes and progression on the skin and is fairly strong and long lasting. Quasar has been my signature scent for a long time and has been alternated with VPH during the summer time. A few sprays go a long way and will last about 10 hours. In my book a masterpiece!

this was my first frag and i was not disappointed. The opening came up fresh like someone from a really cold bath and then the heart projected rosemary, lavender, banana peel and the banana leaf itself. The dry down smells like a sophisticated vanilla which is what i love about this frag. It’s a really safe frag and I LOVE IT. 3.5/5

I have just purchased a second bottle of this wonderful and understated fragrance. The notes are all subtle so there is no pronounced banana or banana leaf note. Everything blends in beautifully giving this scent a fresh yet melancholy air. I wear it often and I love the feeling of comfort it gives me. Very appealing.

I got impression from Quasar as a mixture of expensive shaving foam, good quality herbal / woody soap and classic aqua perfume scents with mossy undertones. The beginning is a little bit citrusy too (although I don’t see any lemon’s or oranges in ingredient’s). Banana and banana leaf adds little beat of tropical mood (in new reformulation it’s less noticeable!) . Very exotically refreshing, masculine- great spring / summer scent indeed! I agree with other reviews that Quasar is closer to a safe scents in its developing and has a little bit of Aqua di Gio cologne in the background. Quasar’s E.d.t longevity and sillage are moderate. The dry-down is little bit greeny and woody. The bottom line- good job Jesus del Pozo! 🙂 Worth every penny.

Smells like your girlfriend’s nice fruity shampoo. You know, the one you’re not supposed to use, but you just ran out of your Axe BallsOfSteel shampoo and well, what r ya gonna do? Anyway, it’s pleasant, fresh, fruity, herbal and 100% safe. This isn’t going to WOW you, but will make you feel good n’ clean. And I do get a bit of that bittersweet smell from the inside of a banana peel. Best for summer. Not very masculine, but not flowery either, so to me it’s completely neutral/unisex. Sweet, clean, aquatic, but mostly fruity. Just be warned, your girlfriend just ran out of her Eau de Fruity Perfume, and well, what’s she gonna do?

    Good fragrance for it’s price.
This reminds me of Lacoste White, because of it’s fresh, clean, and somewhat fruity/floral scent.
This is good for casual wear during the Spring, Fall, and Summertime. It does project well in the heat.
This does smell as though a person just got done washing their clothes with good laundry detergent.
Lacoste White does smell more fruity compared to this, but this lasts longer on the skin.
    It’s definitely a masculine scent.
    I wouldn’t overspray this one

I love it : quite original in the opening and more conventional in the drydown, but in the good way, even if it reminds me shaving foam scent. Fresh, longlasting with a pleasant sillage: perfect in all situations.
I discovered that the nose behind this one was the Lutens Signature Christopher Sheldrake : I felt surprised because I don’t find any similarity with this scent! Creativity remains mysterious…

I had this cologne when it first came out, Im buying it again. I remeber longevity and compliments as a teenager, but its a mature fragance.
I remember me and my father having multiple boxes of this fragrance.
I remeber cedar and fruits, one of my favorite fragrances of all time.
If you are looking for a long lasting fragrance that’s not overpowering, try this.

Discontinued so I have been using since 1996, especially in autumn because of the wild-aromatic character of the fragrance that reminds me a little decadent tone of this season.
Since then I have detected two reformulations in relation to the original.
In the first, lost some strength of the top notes (especially banana leaves), but in the second, the greenery line provided by fruity notes output together with the banana leaves has been completely drowned or edited off (because of the IFRA restrictions).
Instead, it has been a empty gap not filled with aromatic until the middle and bottom notes begin to make appearance, which doesn’t occur until 15 minutes after application.
On the one hand it’s a shame as we men like to apply a perfume in the morning to feel the invigorating freshness of it, something that is no longer produced and was absolutely delicious.
The upside is that it has been best defined the sensation provided by the geranium-lavender floral combo and the clary sage note has become much smoother than in the original and second formulation where it was too sharp and even angry.
I love this perfume standing out from the typical male fragrance as it doesn’t contains the typical musk base (I mean some aromachemical from those used for the quick manufacture of perfumes without the magic of classical technique and knowledge), so I say: NO MORE REFORMULATIONS PLEASE.
    sillage: continues monster
Projection: lower than in the original version but not a skin scent

I tried this twice before purchasing it. Each time I smelled it I ended up buying another fragrance instead, but it was like this fragrance was drawing me to it like some kind of olfactory siren (‘oh brother’ remarks my wife). Yesterday was my birthday and on the way home I decided to buy it (how could I resist? This quasi-stellar object caught me in its gravity well). The fact that it had been reduced from $49 to $19 for 4.2 oz might also have had something to do with it.
So, what is it actually like? The opening is amazing: the fruity notes to me have a sherbety kind of zinginess to them which is veiled in a subdued green accord (which I suppose is the banana leaf). This lasts a long time and to me becomes more citric as it progresses and the green veil is lifted.
One of the outstanding features for me is the longevity: I tried it at 2PM and could still smell it at mignight. There are few fragrances that last that long on my skin. The fragrance manages to maintain its zinginess (in a toned down way) for much of its long life, which makes it different to so many of the fruity colognes available today (e.g.any of the in2U fragrances by cK).
I can thoroughly recommend this one!

  39. :

Very fruity, fresh and invigorating. Perfect for hot summer days. The “banana-newsprint” note its weird but not unpleasant; actually, that accord adds some class to the cloud of notes. The only “con” of this scent is the typical boring drydown of every pseudo-acquatic fragrance in the market(cedar-sandalwood combo).6 out of 10.
New Edit: I find the opening very similar to Chanel Platinum Egoiste, maybe more fruity, but the geranium-lavender in this one makes both scents very alike. Platinum Egosite, nevertheless, its more soapy, sharp and with a “metalic” edge.

  40. :

On first discovering this on a discount website the notes said banana peels, newsprint(?) and woods…well, I wanted it immediately. It took quite a while to find some and then when I did it was out of stock :-(…Thanks to weegee I now have a large deluxe spray sample: “Thanks, Toots”!
This opens slightly fruity, like a whiff of tropical fruit salad, and the banana leaves (not peels…) are green and slightly pungent. It becomes more of a soft clean masculine scent, due to the herbs and lavender/geranium combo. I find it quite refreshing and dry at the same time. The finish on this is clean in a woody mossy type of way, and the patchouli must be light or white; as it is not the least bit dirty or earthy. I do not get a ‘newsprint’ smell per se, but it does vaguely remind one of a fresh printed newspaper; but, that is just the smell of paper pulp (wood) and soy-based inks (nutty and vegetal, slightly chemical). All things considered this is a pretty nice fragrance: sweet but not syrupy or sickening; green, but not sharp; woody, but not heavy and herbal/floral, but not fougere-like or too feminine. Something familiar, but slightly different…in a good way. Good for spring/summer or anytime you want a fun and fresh scent that has some character and decent lifespan.
    Sillage: good
    Longevity: above average
    Overall: 4/5
A quasar is an extremely dense star that radiates intense energy and one teaspoon of its matter can weigh tons…but this, however is nothing like its namesake; it is energetic, yes, but not heavy at all. It is aromatic, but not really THAT fruity. More of a slightly green herbal-woody fougere with fruity tendencies. No wonder I love it! 😉

The opening is fantastic… clean and fresh, I really smell the banana leaf wich makes this scent different than others. But after an hour, it turns too mature and smells like shaving foam like other reviewers said. Very mature after passed 1 hour.

  42. :

    4 out of 5

Quasar is a big buffet of fruit salad on a banana leaf (or banana peel?) There is nothing else that I can identify but then I begin to smell something herbal like lavender and rosemary. It also has a touch of green/aquatic accord. The bottle is really cool and the scent is okay. I have nothing terribly bad to say about it. In general, a fragrance in this group doesn’t excite me, but if I had to pick one from this olfactory, this would be the one I pick.

Usualy I like very sweet scents even in very hot sumer days, especialy vanillic.
This fragrance most definetly isn’t sweet but I like it very much nonetheless.
It is delicate and sharp in the same time and still very manly scent, fresh woods flowers, really like you would be in space, so clean and refreshing.
It is must try for everyone.

A very interesting EDT. The transition of your notes is almost imperceptible. Their fragrance is like a rich mix sweet-citrus fruit, with hints of rum and ozone alcoholics, harmonizing perfectly. It has a wooden background shout I do not recognize, but provides the necessary manhood for this fragrance.
It is not recommended for teens because it is too old or older than 50 because it loses all seriousness. Its season is for warm climates, whether day or night. Best suited for use in fairly formal events, even for nights out, the fragrance is very original, easily recognizable. Not very romantic by the power of his notes, but it can help draw attention. Very original.

It’s the most realistic aquatic creation I’ve ever raised. You can basicly feel the drops. I don’t know how to explain it really.
It’s has promient doses of yuzu, banana, sage, rose and sandalwood.
Start as a cold shower. There is something floating on It, frozen, as cold as a snow flake. It’s very zesty with the yuzu japanese fruit followed with touch of light sage and gorgeous dewdrop rose petals. The banana accord reign as a heart note, but still that wet touch, ( It’s like a banana shake with crushed ice),a fantastic aquatic quality finish, indeed. No lavander, nor rosemary or metallic geranium can be detected.
I’m able to sniff later some ghostly patchouli and sandalwood.
The formula turns into something more warm, but you still smelling roses and wet bananas.
The long lasting is impressive. It remain in my flesh up to 8 hours. The projection is monster.

Now here’s a blind buy I’m happy with. Smells different (good different), very strong and long lasting. 1-2 sprays are enough. Do not spray near your nose, or it will get overpowering. One spray on chest and one on my wrist seems to do it for me.
I have had several compliments from the ladies with this one.

i had high hopes for this one and bought it blindly, based on the reviews here. It does remind me of shaving foam. i’m a bit disappointed. maybe i’ll come around and enjoy it more around sumer time.

Smelled very decent when I bought it in 1994…wow, long time ago… Not extremely fresh but also not sweet, it was very well balanced with an aquatic type of mood.

A strange tingly cedar. I bought it for my bf because it sounded interesting but I don’t think he’ll like it, and I don’t think I like it either (but that’s on me, I’ll still have him try it). I was hoping to get more of the herb notes.
