I’m glad other people said this would work on a man too, since I am a man and bought this 4 days ago at Target and love it. Let me say first though that I usually hate most men’s fragrance. The majority of them smell exactly the same to me and so many have a sharp citrus note to them and I hate citrus. My most loathed fragrance is Eternity for Men. If I died and went to hell they would force me to wear Eternity for Men… for all eternity. LOL. I hate it that bad. So I usually gravitate to 2 main groups. Musky for evening, and a clean scent for day. So for clean scents sometimes I try women’s perfumes. I love this stuff!!! It smells so clean on me and musky at the same time. I just came back from the doctors and 3 different people asked me what I was wearing and that I smelled so good.

Yes, it is Dead Sexy. Both the fragrance and the sentiment.
BUT, it’s more floral; more vanillic. It’s more wearable for the non-perfumistas than Dead Sexy. More wearable for me too, a shameless perfumista!
It’s dark. Handsome. If it were tall, I’d marry it! 😉
I find it a masculine floral. A masculine vanilla. I guess I just find it masculine 🙂 The woods here are absolutely dark. They all but jump off my skin, but there’s no lightness to the note at all. I can pull it off, NO problem, but a man would rawk it with greater satisfaction to me. The floral and the vanilla a little more interesting on a man, far less expected. It would provide instant curiosity. I find I want to snuggle into Pomme Poivre on someone else, more frequently than I want to smell it on my skin.
I like it. It’s mini bottle worthy to own, but it’s full body worthy to gift.
    Prominent notes:
    Ebony Wood
    Vanilla
    Rubber Tire o.O
    Projection and Longevity:
    A dab will do
Oh, and Pomme Poivre, Pepper Apple? Pepper Apple?
    Hmm, I think not.
With a house name like Love and Toast, this should have been named Burnt Toast 🙂

With Poivre in the name, you know there will be some yummy pepper which is why I tried this scent. Vanilla musk and black pepper how can you go wrong. Well you have to respray but at this price, i don’t’ mind and i get to enjoy those top notes over and over again. I’m going to try dead sexy and revisit my bvlgari black after these great reviews! Six hours later a vanilla skin scent.

This smells awful on me, but it smells amazing on my husband and is now his signature scent. A lot of his buddies have asked what he wears because he smells so good, and then get totally shocked when he tells them it’s a women’s perfume! On him it smells like warm pink peppercorns and woods rounded out by a subtle sweetness. This is a colder weather scent, and in the middle of summer it is a bit too much.

Love this dabbed, not so much sprayed. I’ve been enjoying my dabber mini and finally scored a full-size bottle. I was so disappointed when it arrived and almost thought it wasn’t the same scent or that it might have turned. But then I realized that it is the dab vs the spray that made the difference. Dabbed, I get a full bodied yet balanced exotic ebony wood gently wrapped in soft florals of orchid and creamy jasmine and a touch of vanilla. Sprayed all i get is wood, wood, wood. Nothing sweet or floral or anything. This reminds me a lot of Robert Cavalli Nero Assoluto and I will test it out dabbed because it also is all woods when sprayed.

This is a wonderful rainy-day fragrance! Once you get past the initial blast, which is sharp and synthetic, and the first few minutes which are a bit musty, this settles down into a warm, woodsy-vanilla scent. Very soft and comforting. Longevity is good, I put this on before bed and could still smell it the next morning.

Pomme Poivre is an interesting and affordable fragrance. It is odd because even though there is not a pepper note in the fragrance I get a subtle black pepper mixed with the “ebony wood”. However, it smells more similar to guaiac wood to my nose. This scent has a smoky wood characteristic to my nose which I smelled in fragrances that contain the note guaiac wood. Pomme Poivre has a light white musk quality to it too, but like others have mentioned I get no jasmine or orchid in this fragrance. I few hours in to wearing this, a subtle vanilla sweetness does emerge and blends in the now softer somewhat mysterious wood note. Simple, but different! I know I have nothing that smells like Pomme Poivre in my collection.
Overall I do enjoy Pomme Poivre, definitely an interesting fragrance in the Love & Toast line. This is a soft and gentle spicy wood musk scent, if you are looking for a scent that has these characteristics I would recommend this! As I said earlier it is a gentle scent that lingers quite closely to the skin, but does last for up to 6-8 hours on my skin. Personally, I will most likely get the most wear out this fragrance when I am in the mood for a bit of spice on a day it is warmer outside and I do not want an overwhelming scent.

We’ll, I guess I changed my mind about this because I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I decided to embrace nostalgia. It’s spicy and almost smells like men’s cologne at first spray. The vanilla and jasmine keep it feminine. And it lasts a good while. Really pretty nice for a cheaper perfume. It really smells like fall to me, but I’ve been wearing it while the weather’s still cool. Oh and I smelled Laguna again, and I still don’t like it. It’s not much like pomme poivre though.

I smelled this at Earthfare today and it instantly brought back memories of my teenage years in the nineties. It smells like a mashup of the fragrances I wore: vanilla body spray, Victoria’s Secret musk, bath and body works sugared maple (an old one, not sure if you could find it now). It makes me think of the dark, sweet, opulent 1996 remake of Romeo and Juliet. When I became pregnant in 2004, I was wearing another dark vanilla, Laguna. If you’ve ever had morning sickness, you know how powerfully you can lose your taste for something. My husband smelled it on my wrist and liked it. I wish I could overcome my aversion to dark vanilla scents, because this is something I once would have loved.

Pomme Poivre reminds me of a tiny house my husband and I rented when newly-wed. It wasn’t much, but had a screened back porch and lovely gardens. Many muggy summer nights we would sit on the porch. Distant thunder, night blooming jasmine and deep woods rolling towards us, mingling with my vanilla body spray (the height of sophistication!) and his musky after shave. We were young and optimistic, the world before us.
If do wish PP had a little more depth. If this ‘fume had something boozy, or maybe some tobacco… or actual pepper…I would go weak in the knees. Still, it is lovely. The woody element keeps it from smelling too girly, and the vanilla is almost dark, mysterious, not cake-ish.. The Ophelia-like bottle is gorgeous, too.
PP is not offensive and people compliment me constantly when I wear it. Masculine and woody on top, clouds of musky vanilla and whiffs of jasmine.
Most importantly, it makes me smile.

I recently purchased this perfume after being intrigued by it for so long. I would go by an take a sniff of it whenever shopping at whole foods. So I picked up the small bottle to try out. I love, love, love it so much. It’s so beautiful and delicate! I like it as a winter/autumn scent, not sure if i will wear it in the sticky summer months. But i wear it by dabbing it twice behind my ears and then use what is on my fingers for application to my wrists. It works best if you don’t rub it in and just dab it dry. I find it very long lasting- 6 to 12 hours at least. (But again I haven’t wore it in the summer.) I’m very fond of white musk essential oil..which is more subtle and understated than this …but will surely be enjoyed by anyone with love of white musk to.. and it’s also good for people with allergies to heavy perfumes since it’s not too overwhelming. Plus, the bottle is gorgeous!
edit: just want to add, that if your at odds with what lotion to wear with this perfume. I have found that this perfumes combines so well with Nivea Creme the original. I get more compliments on it with nivea.

A feminine woody fragrance that smells cozy and mellow. This perfume really relaxes me and grounds me, I think that’s why people find it so addictive 🙂 Two sprays lasted for 6 hours on my skin, and it is something I can wear to work without offending anyone. The ebony wood is the star, with just a slight hint of the vanilla and musk (they all kind of meld together). I like, I like a lot. Well priced too, yay!

I LOVE THIS. I bought a teeny one @ Whole Foods and literally DOUSED myself with it because it is one that when you catch a whiff of yourself you are like g**damn I smell GOOOOOOD. I know what the notes are supposedly in this but there is something Im either missing or isn’t noted that is a warm, dry, almost food like smell like that is positively captivating. I love this. I just dont think it last very long (much to my chagrin) and I wish this was stronger- I thought it was an edt but I guess it actually is an edp . Because I want to dunk myself into it like a sheep in sheepdip. I have heard Margot Elena has similar scent in Tokyo Milk line, will have to try that. I feel this is overpriced given that it doesnt seem to last very long, but may have to suck it up and purchase anyway since I cannot really keep going to Whole Foods to spray it on my coat so that I can keep smelling it. Would appreciate someone better versed in fragrance breakdown than myself to please, tell me what cardamom-esque bergamot-esque peppery but sweet drydown I am smelling here because I LOVE it.

My best friend gave me a tube of the hand cream for christmas, and I was really excited to try Love & Toast. She told me she chose Pomme Poivre for me because she felt it was the most complex and mature of the fragrances. At very first, this smells so much like Tainted Love from Tokyo Milk Dark. However, as it opens, I get a lovely peppery smell, and the woods. My boyfriend put some of the cream on his chapped hands last night, and I loved the scent on him. It really became masculine in a sexy, earthy way. YUM! I think this hand cream will be a nice accent to some of my flowery perfumes. I just layered a little Stella over it, and wow, it did make the florals sing. I’m so thankful to Fragantica, because now I am learning about things like layering different fragrances.
Edit: I acquired a full-sized bottle of this after falling in love with the hand cream, which is an excellent hand cream BTW. Predictably the fragrance is softer than the cream, and it doesn’t last very long (2-3 hrs) on skin, but it lasts on clothing with that nice sweet peppery smell. When I say sweet I don’t mean sweet like sugary, but it has that softness that makes the pepper in this so nice. Anyway, I’ve been blending it with some of my fragrances that are floral but too light, such as Alfred Sung Sha, and what it does is override the aquatic greenness, so I get lovely lilac as a top note and then the nice peppery round warmth of the Pomme Poivre. Very nice for anyone who has some fragrances who are a bit too sweet/floral and want to balance them out to create essentially a custom floriental. Yay!

Weird…. it actually smells like Midnight in Paris from VC&Arpels !

I like this one a lot. It smelled very good in the bottle. It’s a scent that seems familiar, but it’s really difficult to put your finger on. When I put it on, it was beautiful. Mysterious and mood-lifting and made my day. Not overpowering, but definitely leaves a trail.

The ebony woods are definitely the focus without any signs of jasmine or vanilla orchid. This fragrance is subtle but extremely persistent. I’m not actually sure whether I love or hate it because it is so specific. Ebony woods? I have a Chinese ebony wood carving of a girl in a bathtub. It doesn’t really have a smell, but if it did smell like Pomme Poivre I wouldn’t mind at all.
As others have said, the opening is awkward if altogether industrial-smelling, but from that emerges a quietly deep, smooth wood note with a tinge of bean-like sweetness, as HUEbris (below) mentioned. PP doesn’t exactly smell like beans and it’s not a sweet fragrance overall, but those discrete elements characterize the unusual woodiness. This fragrance wears like a second skin. It’s comforting and has given me a new sense of subtle strength. The clean musk gives it a matte quality.
Pomme Poivre smells like a tarmac that by some feat of alchemy, is being turned into honeyed hay. The most refined offering from Love & Toast. Worth checking out. Longevity is good. Ideal for cooler weather.

Warm, dusty vanilla. Not at all sweet, and barely floral. I’ve found this to be a little boring on its own. However, it brings tremendous depth when worn along with sugary scents. I’m not one to layer perfumes typically, but Pomme Poivre’s linearity makes it ideal for combining.

I really do like this fragrence. It is some what one note, but that one note is very good. It is a very very soft scent, but not fruity, more soft in a warm blanket kind of way.

A very nice fragrance. Similar to Elena’s ‘Dead Sexy’, with the ebony woods being very noticeable, just with the added addition of jasmine and white musk, making this scent a bit more delicate and innocent than Dead Sexy- a very good parfum.

Smells like a mans cologne, wich is wierd.

  24. :

    5 out of 5

Pomme Poivre is highly unusual on my skin, but unfortunately not in a positive way. I can’t really identify any notes. It’s hard for me to really say anything substantive about what it smells like, other than to say that it is quite pungent. To put it bluntly, this fragrance comes off smelling like industrial chemicals on my skin – rather tarry, abrasive and heavy. Clearly this is not a scent made for my skin. I will definitely have to pass on this one.

Just got this about a week ago. I would describe the scent as very warm. This starts out as a dark jasmine woody scent, lasts for a long time, and fades to a nice warm vanilla musk. I usually prefer fruity wood scents for daytime, so I would wear this at night. Definitely perfect for a night in with the one you love. The scent is very soothing is a bit mysterious, definitely more mature then the flirty musk scents I usually wear.

Really like this one,its special, woody and warm.
Reminds me of BVLGARI BLACK but this one is nicer, less masculine.
Its quite strong at first but softens down nicely after a while so dont scrubb it off, give it a couple of minutes.
Its a keeper for me,like it a lot
Got to uppdate after wearing it for a couple of days.
Are completely in love with it, dont feel it is any maskuline at all now just warm and soft.
    Kind of addictive, LOVE it!!

Love & Toast POMME POIVRE contains neither apple nor pepper, so the name appears to be some sort of cryptic metaphor. The perfume is really nice, although for a couple of minutes I find it rather unpleasant and actually worried upon my first application that it was going to be a scrubber. Far from it, in fact!
POMME POIVRE opens chaotically and discordantly and smells like something of a jumbled masculine cologne mess, to be perfectly frank. But then somehow out of the madness emerges the method: this is a gorgeous ebony resin composition with light florality and a decidedly Playdoh-esque drydown. Maybe that doesn’t sound so great, but I have to say that I find this niche-quality perfume incredibly addictive, and I am very glad that I acquired it.
Others have compared POMME POIVRE to DEAD SEXY, which appears to contain the same notes, so I’ll definitely be giving that Margot Elena offering a sniff in the not-too-distant future, because this a wonderful creation: all natural, great longevity, good sillage, unique combination of notes. An inviting comfort scent which is not too sweet and totally wrist-sniffable–and it costs nearly nothing!

I totally think MsMaryO has it spot on, a dark vanilla scent with minimal sweet or foodiness, and the woods providing a nice deep kick. The woods are apparent from the beginning. Im not a huge woods fan so I probably wont wear this but I’ll enjoy my sample.

Pomme Poivre is Bvlgari Black without the greasy car parts. I love Black…and I put up with the greasy car parts because I love it so much, but this is exactly what I love about it, without the weirdness. Dark, smooth vanilla-musk and, in this case, a little oud thrown in for good measure.
I’m glad to have found this but I wonder if it will be like caffeine-free coffee, it tastes the same but you still know that something’s missing. Only time will tell how attached I really am to the smell of greasy car parts.
It is very linear and has very good longevity, 6 hours or more, which is exceptionally good given the price. Good projection, but definitely not a sillage monster. All in all, I am very impressed with this niche-at-a-great-price find.

Almost identical to “Dead Sexy” from Margot Elena’s Tokyo Milk line. If anything, a little lighter, not as long-lasting. Maybe a little more floral, a little less vanilla – not much difference otherwise. It’s not bad, I like it but “Dead Sexy” is the better buy in this case.
