Polo Black is a crowd pleasing, fruity scent that is very versatile and can be worn in a variety of temps and settings.
I agree with the main notes as voted. It’s fruity on the opening with mango being the main fruit note that I detect. I also get sandlewood, patchouli and a hint of sage.
Sillage is moderate and as is longevity. It’s a very nice scent. I prefer this over Polo Double Black as this performs better however they both smell alike.

For me its very hard to distinguish what is in this fragrance. Let me tell you in another way. Imagine where the ocean meets the sandy beach with some rocks. You can still walk on the rocks, you gotta be carefull not to fall cuz the rocks have sharp edges. There’s a forest right next to the beach. It’s early in the morning. A nice breeze is coming from the ocean. It’s gonna be a hot day but it’s foggy now and the breeze makes you feel cold. It’s fine though because you have your sweatshirt on.
The breeze, the forest, the rocks, the nice and cold weather, this fragrance is a mixture of them all.
Its a very easy fragrance to wear. Even if it’s the fisrt time you small it, you’ll find it comfortably familiar.

On me it is very metallic citrus kind of scent. I get lemon orange scents more than the mango. I am from a tropical country where mangoes are plenty and the smell of ripe mango is sweet n juicy..but the mango in Polo Black is not sweet, i don’t get it..the other notes are just very subtle..hmm…so it is a linear frag for me..Ralph Lauren come on..?? I have Polo Blue & Red Intense which are very good frags. Polo Black does not live up to my expectations. Longevity is average I got about 3 hours and projection is only up to elbows length..sillage is soft. This is a summer/hot weather/climate frag. I will give it 5/10.

Smells very refreshing in hot summer. Long lasting scent of watermelon peel and lemon. After 10 hours, the lemon is still going.

The Black bottle seems the opposite of what’s inside. There’s nothing dark or edgy about this rather boring tropical scent. It’s also gone within minutes unless you spray this one 10 or 12 times. It’s inoffensiveness offends me. While Polo Blue could also be characterized as inoffensive, it, at least, has some longevity and magic to it. I might take Black on a beach trip but it’s so slight it would be overwhelmed by a crisp breeze of ocean air.
While I do smell the mango, coconut seems more pronounced to my nose.
I went back and tried this for a few days after reading the reviews which described it as powerful and long lasting. I literally could drown in this and my corpse wouldn’t smell of Black more than a half hour after my last breath.
But the Black bottle is rather stunning. Too bad the bottle is better than the juice.
Great gift for those easily offended by strong and daring fragrances. And for boring men everywhere.

This was my first fragrance ever so I have a soft spot for it. I recently purchased it again and was surprised over how synthetic it smells. I suppose my taste has become more refined.
Regardless, this is a unique designer fragrance and definitely a step in a completely different direction. If you wear fragrance for attention, this one will get you noticed. Women also strangely love it.
This fragrance doesn’t really inspire me anymore and doesn’t alter my mood while wearing (which is what perfume should do). I only really wear it to the odd summer night social event. Projection is very strong in the first hour or two then fades to a skin scent for the next four hours.
    6/10.

Love this fragrance, pretty unique, and underrated.
    Ladies LOVE this one too.
Wore Polo Black, and Sauvage EDP on the other arm, and had a bunch of ladies at my local pub tell me which one they preferred……
Polo black won 15-3. NO JOKE.
Check it out guys, but don’t blind buy.

This is my dad’s signature scent. It smells of saltwater and mangoes, but isn’t overly sweet. Actually it’s very salty and not sweet as a fruity fragrance would be expected to be. Sillage is very good as is longevity. It also leans very masculine. It’s not really my style but it’s a very nice fragrance for the money, especially as mango is a rare note in fragrances.

My dad gave this fragrance to me. He said that he does not like this kind of smell to him. But to my nose, I do like this! Got some pretty good compliments on this one while working. I even got a daring one. A girl workmate said that I actually smelled “yummy”. I literally lol’d! I would say though, do not overspray this in super high heat because it tends to choke people out. I have watched a review regarding Polo Black. He said that this particular fragrance can affect your mood, and I definitely have to agree. Do NOT spray this (or maybe just go lightly on the trigger) when you are in a BAD mood. It will only make your mood even worse! Well, that’s based on my experienced though. Personally, I only wear this on professional setting. It maybe is a good choice for dates, but I did not even bother to wear it because my girl truly loves them freshies on me.
    Overall:
Scent: The mango note dominates throughout the scent’s life but is blended pretty nicely. Some tonka on the dry down too
Projection: 1-2 hours on my skin until it becomes a closer scent.
    Longevity: 5-6 hours
Age group: I’d say College students to Adult
Price: On the expensive side in my country

Polo really needs to step out their game, or step out of the fragrance business! Seemingly, every Polo cologne that’s been released is sub-par in terms of overall quality and composition. Well, the only Polo cologne that actually smells decent is Polo Sport EDT.
When I sprayed Polo Black the only thing I could smell for the first 3 minutes was ALCOHOL, then the faint smell of synthetic mangoes, the scent then evolved into a sickening chemical smell. This was from a bottle purchased at an authorized brick and mortar retailer.
The concept behind Polo Black is nice…but Polo failed to deliver once again! LMAO

I bought this for $19.99 and I’m really enjoying it. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but a nice scent. It reminds me a bit of YSL L’Homme La Nuit in some ways, although the YSL is richer and bolder.

A citrus, woodsy, fresh smelling fragrance is what I smell with Polo Black.
The first note that I picked up on was the mango note. When the mango note is blended with the other fabulous woodsy, citrus, aromatic, sweet notes, brings this cologne to life.
I noticed the sandalwood and citrus notes that are used in this fragrance are very well incorperated the the very noticeable mango note. Who would have thought? Evidently, Ralph Lauren did, lol.
I say that this cologne is slightly above average due to the sillage. It does not do that much for me after about an hour though the use of the mango note was very well done. Don’t get me wrong, you should judge for yourself. 🙂

    I got myself a 2011 batch code bottle(30ml)
It’s fine, longetivity is a killer on my skin, i get 8+ hours
But after 2-3 hours, it becomes a skin scent that can be smelled only by you…
Nothing special in my opinion, Ralph Lauren should stick to his polo shirts and suits

Don’t like it. Most of the time smells like a 2 dollars deodorant stick. The opening isn’t bad, I can smell a bit mango, lemon and wormwood, but 5 minutes lates all I get is a combination of sage, lot of watery notes and cheap deodorant stick smell… This part of the perfume is totally same as Bvlgari Aqva Marine…1-1.5 later beside the deo stick note I get some woody elements. No patchouli, no tonka bean. There is nothing perfume smell in here, not worth the money. Sorry.
    – spring/summer/autumn, safe, daytime scent
    – sillage and longevity bit better than average, longevity around 6-7 hours
    – try before buy (maybe)
    Scent (open, top-mid): 6.5/10 (x2)
    Scent (drydown, base): 5.5/10 (x2)

this one is one of the better Polos. Nothing earth shattering by any means but it at least has a bit of an own character which is something not found in a high percentage of todays offerings. The bar is set very low nowadays. It smells like it could be very versatile, its warm woody and fruity aswell as cold cypressy (although not listed) which reminds of some of the better Gucci scents and creations of Aurelian Guichard. The tangerine note detectable in the dry down is delicious too.

It’s been such a long time since I tested Polo Black that I thought I’d test it again. That iced mango opening… what other word is there except… orgasmic!! Mamma Mia, wow! But within minutes… only MINUTES… that glorious opening changes to old, stale, expired spices, and nothing more. Seriously, from WOW to “whatever” within minutes. I kept sniffing and sniffing for even a HINT of that incredible mango but it was gone forever. I certainly realize top notes cannot last forever, but this was pathetic. I wanted to love it, but that’s impossible. Time to give DOUBLE Black another try, and see if it’s any better.

I live in a tropical country and personally would not recommend this cologne when in hot and humid climates.
The first hour of wearing it is great: very complex and exotic, but as the hot day goes by this tropical-scented cologne starts to do what any tropical fruit does when left out in the hot sun for long. Imagine you picked up a mango that has long fallen from a tree and left to bake in the sun – you’ll get this sticky smell of a sugary fruit that shoots right up your nostrils.
I therefore only reserve this for evening occasions when I know i’ll be in an air conditioned environment. My recommendation is treat Polo Black the way you’d treat your grocery: keep it in a cool and dry place where it can stay fresh.

  21. :

    4 out of 5

While I certainly get a fruity and sweet opening, I do not actually pick out mango specifically. I live in the tropics and am intimately familiar with the scent of mango, and what I get is a cocktail of fruits – mandarin, pineapple, mango, peach – sweet cordial balanced with the maturity of sandalwood.
This scent isn’t too extraordinary to me. In fact, it smells pretty familiar, as though I have smelled it many other places before. Not to say it is bad, just that the note profile comes across to me as classic, but also commonplace.
This is an evening perfume, although its performance as a night perfume is stunted by a relatively close sillage. Great for dinner, not so great for the club.
Polo Black opens strong and sweet, before quickly sticking to arm’s length. It has moderate longevity and moderate sillage. This would shine is cooler weather. In the warm weather of the tropics, the fruity notes become sickly sweet – sweeter than I’d like a masculine perfume to be.
I wouldn’t get this for myself though. I am attracted to novelty, and this is far too ordinary for my preference.

I love this but the longevity may be the worst out of my collection. This is from a decant so maybe things went wrong so I bought a new bottle and I’ll update if it’s any better. But smell wise it’s great.

  24. :

    4 out of 5

This is good stuff…for the first 4-5 hrs (maybe 6 if i’m lucky). When I first read notes I thought mango? Lol ok whatever, a mango note never struck me as a something that goes with woody notes. Until after trying this, I happened to consume an un-ripened mango..it’s flesh still firm to touch and tastewise still on the bitter side. AmaZing!! It actually leaves a woody piney aroma/taste that lingers. Very much a panty dropper as well. But not like Lacoste Style in Play, 212, Varvatos and Bogart.

I wear (four sprays) this fragrance today.
This morning, within 90 minutes, i received two very enthousiasts compliments by women.
This fragrance has a wow factor !
    Edit (2017 august 28) :
I’m lucky regarding the perfornance :
    – longevity = 8 hours;
    – sillage = the first 2-3 hours are very good. After, it’s soft.
At the end of my work day (7 hours after my first sprays) i received an other compliment (the third).

It’s not my favorite Polo fragrance, that would go to the king, Polo Green (vintage) which I’ve had in my collection since 1986. Polo Black really should of been called “Polo Mango” because that’s what I mostly get from this fragrance. It’s Tropical and Fruity, and women in my world love it. Despite the fruitiness, this surprisingly is still masculine enough for men like me to wear. Maybe because I get hints of the uber masculine Safari by Ralph Lauren. It’s the Safari DNA that makes this a man’s fragrance because without it this would be too fruity for me. In fact, Polo Black reminds me of Mambo For Men mixed with Safari… that’s the exact vibe I get from this fragrance. I’m surprised Polo Black does not get more love here. There seems to be a lot more people that just like the fragrance but not love it. Few people dislike it, which I can understand because it might not be a wow factor for most people, but it’s certainly not going to offend anybody either. Out of the 40+ fragrances in my summer rotation, I would put Polo Black somewhere in the middle or maybe slightly above. The longevity is average, nothing special. I do seem to get nose fatigue quickly with this one so I need to be careful and not over spray. All in all, Polo Black will remain in my collection for the foreseeable future because it’s a safe summer fragrance that’s different enough from others in my rotation to keep.

I wore this stuff before really starting my now hefty collection. It was my last signature before I ended the idea in my wardrobe. I went through one full bottle and I have another now that is in my extensive rotation. I have to say as far as year round signature’s go this is one of the better one’s. I think it really is a modern style Polo cologne, meaning it doesn’t smell as dated as the original Polo Green, but it still has the same ambiance. I feel like I’m wearing Polo, in a more modern juxtaposition of scent oils. I still think if I had to have one all occasion year round cologne, this is one of the few that covers all the bases. It can be worn in high heat, but it’s also appropriate for cold weather. It can be casual, or sophisticated. Seriously, this is one versatile fragrance. Much more summer friendly than even say Blu De Chanel. If you only want one fragrance that can meet any situation, this is one of, if not the best option around.

  28. :

    4 out of 5

The main problem with most of the fruity fragrances is that they tend to give teenage vibes & extremely vacation atmosphere.
With Polo Black, this is not the case at all… somehow it managed to achieve an extremely elegant professional style without being over serious.
The result of that very delicate equation is an amazing fragrance suitable for a board meeting, and a beach ball game at the same day.
I don’t see a problem with the performance, in my opinion this is how a sophisticated fragrance should perform, last about half a day (to have the chance to refresh at the end of the working hours) and project quietly (to give the impression of being a personal aroma not an air refresher that you smell in the entire room)
It could be easily a signature scent that i cant think of a situation that it can’t perfectly cover.

  31. :

I am trying a sample of Polo Black, and it’s a pretty decent flanker. I mostly get mango at first, a rather “dry” mango, not super-sweet, then it mixes with the various woodsy notes. Patchouli and citrus emerge towards the drydown, along with a touch of licorice-like wormwood, which is interesting. I get a slightly powdery feel from Polo Black, too.
This is a fairly “clean” fragrance, with moderate longevity and sillage. If applied very lightly Polo Black could be suitable for work.
Update: I just bought a tester online.

  32. :

    4 out of 5

Strong stuff on initial spray. Good for black tie affairs, it’s clean enough for this, summertime lunch or nights out any season. Somewhat strong scent though to the nose initially, fades from your clothing after 2-3 hours, stays on my skin for a good 4-6 hours.
In the cold winter months, it’s hard to smell a light scent, I save this for dinners and special occasions during the wintertime. I do feel polo double black is a bit more refined though, although a lighter scent. I probably will keep this handy, it starts to shine on the drydown, it’s good for night or cold weather on a date. You’ll get more mango scent in the hot weather or summertime, but it works for myself all seasons.
I wore this last night, and today. Although the scent really evolves during the drydown, i’m a bit bummed with longevity of this one. I always felt it needed to last longer to be a true superstar, but the more I wear it, the better it seems to be on the drydown.

Ralph Lauen Polo Black is a spicy tropical citrusy woody aromatic scent with. In a world with a lot of citrusy woody, I find that Polo Black sets itself apart good enough. I think that is attributed to the mango note. It’s one that I find as a bench player to my collection as in, if I need a new scent it is a good swap in nearly any situation or time of year, in but it’s not one that is a must get for me. If I run out, it’s one that I don’t have to rush to get a replacement of. I could go a while and wait for this (I’ll get to that later).
I find that Polo Black lasts about eight hours on me with a strong mango scent with some citrus and pretty heavy sweetness with the citrus notes before going woody. The scent works in both day and night and can work in all seasons. It is one that could work in any situation as well but it isn’t a scent that I’d see in a starting line-up for anyone but a casual male fragrance user.
One knock to me is that Polo Black has several scents that smell fairly close to it in my collection namely Rue21 CJ Black, Rocawear Evolution and Rihanna Rogue Man. CJ Black is a stripped down Polo Black with just citrusy notes and musk that too works in most seasons and both times of day like Polo Black. Rocawear Evolution and Rihanna Rogue Man vaguely smell like Polo Black but with more of the tonka based oriental vibes enhanced and turned into night scents for fall into winter, even colder spring days. Evolution maintains the mango but goes in a darker feel with coffee and rum notes and is far closer to Polo Double Black Polo Black’s flanker. Rihanna Rogue Man however, removes the mango but enhance the sweetness with flowery notes. Evolution and Rogue Man are even better than this to me. This is part of the reason I say I can wait on Polo Black if I run out.
Sadly I must say that I don’t love Polo Black as much as the Polos I own (Blue, Red and Supreme Oud) but it is a very good one. I rate it at a 7.7 out of 10. As I said it isn’t a must buy but a nice option to pull in every once in awhile in nearly any occasion.

Very linear to me. Not sure if people really know what mango smells like but it’s not this. Tried it one time and got it out of my collection. Performance is great so it’s not all bad but not for me. Perhaps a 16 year old boy would love this.

have to say fruity male scent is much better than female scent
    this is fruity
but with the masculine patchouli and sandalwood on the back, so amazing
fruity at the beginning and then it’s the amazing woody mango scent
    fresh and masculine
    i really like this one
perfectly for any occasions except winter
this is maybe the only scent that has fruity note and I like
lasts about 8 hours on my skin

Polo Black, a stunningly good smell, but lacking performance.
Polo Black smells great, you get the mango, citrus, sandalwood, patchouli to it. The top smells great and it stays pretty linear. Fantastic for just about any occasion or time of year. It’s maybe not a formal scent though.
Performance is where this really suffers. I get 4-5 hours, with good projection for only about an hour. This could be a hall of fame scent but for the performance.
You will get compliments with this one though. Very inoffensive and smells great.

The fragrance opens up with a large does of mango, but quickly changes into a blend of mango, patchouli, and sage. You can also pick up a small dose of tonka bean. Many describe it as a summer scent, but if you get past the mango note on top (which is very pleasant), you get a complex blend of notes that are better suited for colder weather. This cologne is best used for falls and milder winters.
Many mention longevity problems, but this scent lasts 8-10 hours on my skin. The issue is that this fragrance creates nose fatigue. You may not smell it, but others will. This cologne lasts from days to even weeks on my clothes. It has very solid longevity with a modest sillage.
Unique enough to be a signature scent, but also safe enough to please any nose, this is one worth trying. The mango opening sets it apart and the other notes compliment it perfectly. Easily my all time favorite smell. Whether you wear it with a suit or with a t-shirt, Polo Black works.

After all these years of owning this scent it’s always a scent I come back to !!!
This opens up smelling kind of synthetic and opens up very bitter, spicy and to be honest it’s not that appealing. After 5 minutes however this morphs into an amazing scent once the spices down and the mango and sandalwood take over.
To my nose this smells like fresh laundry and linens right next to a lake that’s surrounded by a lot of greens. This is a great scent that’s very refreshing, smooth and when I want a scent that will help me relax I often choose this scent.
Also a noteworthy thing about this scent is that it gets a lot of compliments and this projects and lasts a LONG time. This is also a scent that just when you think it’s faded someone compliments you even after a few hours upon application.
Performance this lasts 8-12 hours and projects very well without becoming cloying as its very aromatic
Overall I’d rate this an 8.5 out of 10 ! It’s a great scent that’s actually unique but I can’t give this a 9 out of 10 because although it’s a great fragrance it’s not 1 of the best fragrances

A slightly fizzy/powdery/sporty fresh mango, sandalwood and patchouli fragrance.
These are the two dominant players in this fragrance.
It’s silage is moderate/low but it certainly lasts a long long time as a skin scent. I think this is an office scent, and subtlety is the name of the game when it comes to office scents.
It’s so fruity yet manly. It’s like an exact balance of fruit and woods. 50/50. I really like this stuff as a casual office scent. It’s extremely inoffensive and most people seem to enjoy it. Can be worn year-round.

As bluntly and unequivocally as I can possibly put it, this is my favorite fragrance.
Out of the bottle, I get a candied fruit salad vibe, which mellows out just in time for the woody elements to come into play. This stuff lasts, projects, and is my personal compliment king. I may be in the minority, but this is the only fragrance I will probably ever buy multiple bottles of. Out of all the niche and designer fragrances that I have tried (which is a lot more than my profile indicates), this is the one for me.

After the hugely successful release of Polo Green, I was hesitant to try any scent made by Ralph Lauren. I, like a whole lot of people, suffered the POS( Polo Overload Syndrome)
Unfortunately, most of it’s users were disco habitues and sleazy men, which totally killed what miniscule interest I had for this brand.
Fast forward to the present, when my sister gifted me with a bottle of Polo Black. Not wishing to disappoint her, I tried it on the spot.
I must admit this is way better than Polo Green (wearable, even.) It doesn’t smell dated at all. Rather, it smells fruity in a manly way. However, the drydown is a disappointment. All I get is tonka and sandalwood with a strong ozonic base. (Wormwood?)
Good thing it disappears after 3 hours. All in all, I’d give it a 5 out of 10.

I got this from my sister from abroad but I originally asked her to get me Polo Double Black and but she got me this instead because PDB was out of stock and upon receiving this I felt dissapointed. But when I already tried it on for several days I really got accustomed to it to the point of making an excuse to go out of the house just to wear it. And we in the frag community really often times forget the reason why we buy fragrances and that is to smell good for ourselves and for others. I got a compliment from this from my female colleague in the office and she was more than 10 feet away from me although we were in an aircondioned room. And she was asking me who is the reason why I was wearing this good smelling fragrance and I just replied that ” Can’t I just wear it for myself and I want to smell nice” and she did laugh insinuating that I was flirting with someone in the office which wasn’t true of course. Buy this fragrance and I assure you that in return you will get a good story with your journey with this one and I will buy this again when my juice runs out.

It must be tough being Ralph Lauren. They made one of the scents that went on to define the 1980s – Polo. It was a massive hit in the US, and everyone and their mother owned and wore it. However it wasn’t quite as popular over here, but it still has a solid fanbase.
Unfortunately it seems like they’ve never really been able to surpas the original Polo. Polo Sport was an alright fresh fragrance, but lost out badly to L’eau de Issey Pour Homme and Acqua di Gio.
Pretty much all their other efforts ever since have been disappointed. There is the decent yet forgettable Polo Blue. The bland Big Pony series, and the disgusting Polo Red.
However, they did find time to release one gem – Polo Black.
Sure, Polo Black is neither groundbreaking nor fantastic. Instead it’s a decent woody aromatic, that offers a new take on a, by now, old style.
Released in 2005, it certainly also smells like 2005. It’s woodsy and fruity. It’s peers are Allure Homme, Boss Bottled and similar fragrances that were popular in the early-mid 2000’s.
However, where Allure Homme takes a decidedly old school direction with the theme, and Boss Bottled takes a slightly more lite-gourmand route, Polo Black was one of the first Black-styled fragrances that took an existing platform and loaded fruits on top.
Like most Black-themed fragrances, it comes across as bright and fruity. It’s not dark at all. Why they decided to call fruity fragrances “Black” is beyond me, but it seems to have worked, as it’s a style that is still popular.
The opening is a great mango note. It’s very fruity and sweet, and it’s backed by subtle tangerine and citrus notes. They are hardly noticeable, but they are present if you really dig in with your nose.
After that it becomes a mish-mash of notes. I do get a bit of lavender, lots of tonka bean and loads of sandalwood. There is a bit of patchouli as well.
They claim there is sage and wormwood in this, though I must admit that I struggle to get even a tiny bit of these two notes.
Polo Black is a very fruity, slightly synthetic fragrance with a nice woodsy background. I can’t really fault it for this – it’s well blended and well made. It smells fresh and is wearable for pretty much any situation. It’s safe enough for work, boring enough for the office and loud enough for a night out.
Surely this is not a perfumistas dream fragrance. It offers little new, and many other fragrances tread similar grounds. However, I find something very alluring about this one. It’s not interesting at all, it’s just a nice, simple and unassuming fragrance that I love to wear.
Sometimes I like wearing something a bit out there like Amouage Jubilation for men or Le Labo’s Santal 33. Yet at other times I just want something nice and fresh to wear, that I know won’t offend anyone. For those times, Polo Black is quite excellent.
Longevity is very good – 7-8 hours.
    Rating: 7/10
