I’ve been on somewhat of a patchouli quest lately. I’ve purchased Classic Patchouli, Lorenzo Villoresi Patchouli, and Diptyque Tempo.
They are all great, the first two are soliflore patchoulis.
Patchouli Absolu I just tried, and in the opening it reminded me of my two favorite Private Blends, Italian Cypress, and Amber Absolu.
The bay leaf, and cypriol give it a green conifer vib, like cypress. This has an old school, classic gentlemen’s fragrance feel. It’s very woody, and the patchouli is like only 40% of the whole.
It’s too close to Italian Cypress for me to purchase a bottle.
This is the most woody of all the Private Blends. The cashmere and patchouli make up the primary woody accord. I don’t get the leather. The synthetic wood cashmere wood, smells mostly like a very rich and smooth cedar note.
Hugo Boss has a fine patchouli like this from their exclusive collection, it’s called Cashmire Patchouli, prices are way down from list on eBay; from $170- $59. for 50 ml.
    Rating: 8.5/10

I don’t really care for the scent of patchouli- patchouli lovers will love this, but not me. It’s way too strong. I love Tom Ford’s fresher scents much more.

    Very nice stuff but 1st 20mins it’s awful after that it’s 10/10 .

    Literally.
Like aged paper or opening the drawers of an old wooden cabinet.

EDIT: I think this may be a fragrance that is very sensitive to cycling body chemistry… The first few times I put it on, it was smoky, sweet and womanly; but a few days later I put some on and it was bitter, almost acrid, and overwhelmingly masculine. One to use carefully I think!
I adore this fragrance. Hubby just got himself some Oud Wood, which I was secretly coveting…and then I tried Patchouli Absolu, and have decided he can keep his Oud Wood 😉 . Funnily enough, even though the Oud Wood is lighter than the Patchouli Absolu, they work better this way round: he is sunny and happy, I’m broody and moody.
I immediately fell in love with the smoke on my skin from the Patchouli Absolu, and I only wish the smoke lasted longer–although it did mellow to a lovely richness on my skin over several hours. It’s the perfect fragrance for someone who rounds out their evenings with a Lapsang Souchong tea or an Islay whisky before bed…

I’ve been sampling this alongside Frederic Malle Monsieur, and even though at least half of my family and colleagues have described it as an “old man” smell, Patchouli Absolu has jumped to the top of my list!
To me it smells like some kinda old school luxurious aromatic shaving cream for a proper wealthy gentleman lol…I’m torn between this one and French Lover/Bois D’Orage as both have such awesome “natural” woody/earthy green vibes. I find both to be full bottle worthy.
I got my sample at a Neiman Marcus store, so I guess we can assume it is from a relatively recent batch. The opening 1-2 hours are loud, and slightly medicinal with the large dose of damp, woody, sweet-leaning herbal patchouli. It settles into creamy yet aromatic patchouli and woods. My testing demonstrated good longevity (over 8hrs) and at least moderate-to-heavy projection. Definitely try before you buy, as it appeared to be a polarizing scent during my testing. I’m gonna smell around more before committing to Patchouli Absolu.
    ——————————————————————
Some of the other patchouli scents I sampled:
    Jovoy Incident Diplomatique
    Jovoy Psychedelique
    Montale Patchouli Leaves
    Nishane Munegu
    Ramon Monegal Mon Patchouly
    Tauerville Patch Flash
    Tauerville Fruitchouli Flash
    Histoires de Parfums Noir Patchouli
    Frederic Malle Monsieur
Nasomatto Pardon (mystery notes ~ reminds me of Patchouli Leaves)

Patchouli Absolu is seriously still my favorite…it’s not chocolaty or fruity patchouli like some of those I sampled. It’s a bit dirty-green and “medicinal,” though not as medicinal as something like Incident Diplomatique. For sweetness, this blend from Tom Ford is sweeter than Monsieur but less than Mon Patchouly or Fruitchouli Flash. It’s not luxury “soapy” like Noir Patchouli but it has this seductive balance of a “clean” classy gentleman’s shaving cream with a woody, aromatic, and earthy patchouli style.

Found a great deal on a bottle, batch B55 (2015). Smells and performs identical to the retail sample which again I’m assuming is no older than 2017. Again it’s neither a crowd-pleaser nor blind buy worthy, but I’m sitting here 12hrs later and the dry-down is like holy kryptonite catnip to me. I would have opted for a large flacon if I made the kind of money Patchouli Absolu smells like lol…but I’m probably crazy enough to get one after finishing this.

Initially, I wrote this off after smelling the top notes on paper a few years ago. Big mistake!
Patchouli Absolu is outstanding. I’m still not a fan of the top notes (too herbal for me), but they burn off quickly. On my skin, I mostly get a clean, semi-soapy, menthol-y, perfect patchouli. As it dries down, a woody skin scent appears. It is much more subdued and classy than I expected. I have to go pretty heavy on the trigger to get any projection or sillage, which is fine with me. I don’t mind subtle. For me, this really works as one of those “your skin but better” fragrances.
In a previous life I used to hang out with/date a bunch of hippie and goth types. Patchouli Absolu takes me right back to those days, and smells like a hug from the coolest, cleanest, most free spirited, and self assured hippie/goth of them all.

The Perfect Patchouli…Patchouli Absolu wasn’t a fragrance I though I’d like. I have tried patchouli based fragrances in the past, with good results. However I never got used to that strong patchouli vibe. This was different.
The note of patchouli itself is a fragrance all unto it’s own. It can be spicy, sweet, aromatic, dark, earthy, bitter, herbal etc. It is all of those things, as it is incredibly multi-faceted. In this fragrance it is the sweetness of the patchouli note which is accentuated. It has a beautiful, almost honey-like sweetness from the amber, tonka bean and guaiac wood. Very creamy and sensual, especially when combined with the leather and cashmere wood. It’a almost as if this is a sweet, creamy patchouli fragrance, which I love very much.
Coincidentally, this is Tom Ford’s favorite fragrance out of his Private Collection. I can see why. He must be a patchouli fan. I would say if you are someone that doesn’t like patchouli, give this a go… and if you are a patchouli lover, then this should definitely be on your list!

This is a Tom Ford Masterpiece, and one Powerhouse of a performer. My skin “absorbs” scents rather quickly. When people write reviews or do a quick, Like, Love review of a fragrance, I am amazed how long some say scents last on them. Most fragrances are gone from my skin in a few hours (scents last on my clothes much longer). But…Patchouli Absolu lasts ALL day on my skin. I can put a spray on my bare chest, on my wrists and sometimes a small spray on my neck, and Patchoul Absolu keeps getting comments hours & hours after spraying! I know all the fragrances in this collection like Tobacco Vanille, Noir de Noir, Cafe Rose, etc.. are unisex, and I despise anyone telling me what a man or woman can wear, but Patchouli Absolu is very “manly”. I will never say a woman cannot wear this, but it could be challenging. This is a deep woodsy patchouli, with nothing sweet, floral or “creamy”. I do love this scent, but I almost never wear it during the day or when it is too warm. Daytime or warm weather makes you smell it ALL day and kind of takes over. This is a masterpiece evening or cold weather scent.

Got a sample of this recently and so far I like it. Like some other reviewers mentioned, this smells mature and classy. I don’t know if it’s just me but I notice that Patchouli Absolu smells very similar to Italian Cypress.

At first blast this offends, and I like that!
It changes so much on me, after an hour that sweatiness is all but gone… but the scent remains distinctive and strong. I generally try to stay away from the “masculine” and “feminine” descriptors (what does that REALLY mean anyway.. it means we are bound to stereotypes, images. etc.). But there’s no way around it, this conjures the typical male image for most likely everyone. Usually I can’t wear that type of scent because I feel like it wears me, but PA is an exception, it works better on me than the more female geared White Patchouli. PA really shifts and warms up and is sort of like something leather that you have worn it. It’s great.
Also I think I’m too young to get the “yoga studio” association the sales rep was complaining about, but it is outdoorsy. Which is no problem for me.

    Earthy – woody – dark
    Color impression: dark taupe
I love Tom Ford Grey Vetiver but not for myself. It’s a flat vetiver perfume to pop up in mass market. Now this stuff is a development in Grey Vetiver’s vetiver and earthiness. It opens dark and oud-like with cypriol and too much aromatic greens, all rendered with earthy, slightly frown patchouli and dusty vetiver that reminds GV’s vetiver. Apart its beautiful play on skin I also wonder how great its tenacity is! Sticks on skin like flea. Two days!

Finally got this back in my collection. Some smart shopping on the gray market and I got my hands on a 250 ml bottle. Now, I can say happily it’s my signature scent. Mr. Ford really hit some magical balance of rough and smooth with this. It’s purple hued and dusky. Manly, strong. But controlled and smooth. Performance is perfect with just 2 sprays to the chest. 8 hours of layered patchouli plant elements that slowly ease into a woody tonka base skin scent to 10-12 hour mark.
I love that it doesn’t go the route of many patchouli scents that layer syrupy sweet notes on top of natural patchouli. This one stays woody, herbal, and earthy. I tried many other patchouli scents to match this savory balance of notes and couldn’t find a better one. Now, with a full flacon I will never be without it. Especially since I’ve learned how to wear it better with just 2 chest sprays. I used to get carried away and would choke people out. All you need is 1 or 2 sprays and your good for a full day of purple hazed, powerful, confident, elegance.

I tried this on my skin today. For the first couple of hours I get a refined and mild patchouli scent. Then little by little patchouli and the scent as a whole start to fade and it becomes a hard to detect skin scent which is pretty clean and pleasant with traces of patchouli. The patchouli in this perfume is masterfully blended with amber-musk and oakmoss to create a refined and clean scent which is very pleasant. I really enjoyed the scent that I was smelling on my skin.
Now, I have to confess that I love patchouli as a note and I enjoy all patchouli scents, no matter how they render the note: clean or dirty, refined or rugged, I will enjoy it! So it’s no surprise that I really like this scent from beginning to end. This said, I have a few good quality patchouli scents in my wardrobe and regrettably don’t feel the need to add this one, especially at this price.
It has good longevity with moderate projection. Overall: 7.5 out of 10.

This smells odd on me. At first I thought it was too much alcohol, but as PA dries down the smell persists. Maybe the Cypriol oil? Not a yes for me as there is something that doesn’t work for my skin and nose. Top note stands out as rubbing alcohol, but isn’t. Very medicinal. Smells great in the bottle.

I tried this before where they sold Tom Ford and I decided to order a sample of it myself a bit after it. Perhaps it is because I bought a sample from Ebay but it really didn’t last long on my skin at all (< 2 hours) despite the smell is simply fantastic. It’s a very dirty, smooth, bittersweet and refined patchouli . Hopefully I’ll get an actual bottle of this someday rather than a watered down variation of it.

Patchouli and its very often niffy and cellar like smell is probably the most difficult note to like let alone to love but i like this one a lot . This is a very earthy, dry and slightly dirty interpretation of patchouli which is blended perfectly with the right supporting notes. I thing if Tom Fords scents would cost half as much as they currently do, Creed and Co. would lose a significant part of their niche market share as TF is superior to them in terms of art of blending. TF scents are also superior in performance department.

Over 2 months ago, while browsing fragrances at Nordstrom, I sprayed one spray of Patchouli Absolu on a card. I took the card home and tucked it into a drawer. It still smells very present and strong. Every time I open the drawer, my nose gets a treat. I am now convinced that I must buy a bottle. 50ml might last a lifetime.

    @genvy
I’m waiting until next fall to re-up on this. The one TF private blend that I justify to myself of having to have for the price point.
So…I’ve worn this a lot. I don’t pride myself on being able to pick out notes or not. But my enjoyment of this scent is passionate.
I’ve smelled quite a number of things. And can tell the differences between them.
I say all that to say this… the joy of this scent to me is that all note accords support the full range of the notes in Patchouli itself. And besides some creamy woods and leather becoming supportively apparent in the dry down and the bay leaf adding some astringent greenness in the opening I don’t get a lot of other notes with this. And… I LOVE THAT about Patchouli Absolu.
The lack of overly sweet counterpoints is the thing that differentiates this Patchouli orgy from other takes of patchouli forward scents which are usually in combination out of timidity in my view.
It’s the precise reason why I’ll have to pay TF prices for this.
So… amateur?… ok. What’s your experience with this one?

I was a child of the 70’s and this to me is nostalgia heaven. One spray on my chest at night and I’m right back sitting in front of a console record player listening to Elton john and the little river band(yeah my mom had some good ones) with the smell of patchouli oil drifting around the sunlit room.
Starts off a brilliantly bitter green/brown juicy smell that settles quickly into a real earthy patch that goes on and on for hours. Not a lot of transformation in this one, but that’s quite alright when you have something this good. It does morph a little though with hints of dark rum and throws out bits of sweetness from time to time. Most patchouli centric perfumes I’ve tried are blended with all sorts of other notes and it gets muddled. This is blissfully full on
    Peace
Scent 10/10 if you like patchouli in its dirty/linear glory then this is for you
Projection 8/10…like a hippy in a sundress at a dead show, this one swirls and twirls all around you
Fortitude 8/10…and the band played on
Full bottle worthy…absolutely…even if you get tired of straight patchouli(I don’t) you can always use this for a base and throw something lighter on top. It’s very versatile I think. Our you can just give yourself 6 big squirts and driiiift aaaawaaaay

I love patchouli. For this, I am always positively prejudiced when it comes to testing patchouli dominant fragrances. PA has been no exception.
Patchouli Absolu opens with a short blast of a cold & bitter liquorice note, that I personally find slightly off-putting, but can perceive it as an ingenious way to announce the earthy patchouli galore soon to follow.
Patchouli has a multi-faceted odour profile and that can be clearly experienced with PA. No more than a few seconds after the blunt opening, the magic begins. A clean, sharp, earthy, minty fresh, strong, herbal patchouli supported discreetely by hints of leather, tobacco, some woody notes and a sort of “old-school” spicy vibe, creates an extremely refined, classy & elegant masculine scent.
Patchouli Absolu, though very modern & fresh, manages at the same time to possess a romantic, “retro” style seductive aura reminiscent of masculine powerhouses from past decades. Whiffs of Ralph Lauren Polo (80’s version), Givenchy Gentleman (80’s version) and the likes, are all present during the (everlasting) fantastic woody leathery spicy earthy drydown
To be honest, when I first tried Patchouli Absolu, not for a single moment did it cross my mind that I would end up loving it so much. It seemed simple, linear & pungent at first yet ended up becoming an intoxicating & addictive multidimensional aromatic scent.
So nostalgic, so modern, so amazing.
    9/10

I LOVE Patchouli and have been wearing it in a variety of forms since the late 1980s. I find that many of the perfumes that I do like have patchouli as a base as well. Tom Ford’s version is one note (which I do not mind in theory) but also a sharp, bitter patchouli. No sweetness, just sharp & bitter. This would be fine for layering with other one note fragrances or some type of essential oil (i.e., sandalwood, lavender, lemon or orange perhaps). It is not for me as a standalone and I think that certain essential oils brands do it better for much less.

I loved him so much, still do, he was my bad boy(Patchouli Absolu), but his love for me is over(the juice is over). From the initial spray on the skin, not even waiting for some drydown, I was in love! I was warned though: it’s unisex but leans more on the masculine side. I see what they meant, but when you’re in love you just don’t listen to anyone, do you?
Not everyone is going to like it. It seriously is a scent not easily tolerable by others, they think it’s smells dirty; i sure had been told by my little nephew that i smell like garbage, when held him in my arms. And from other females that it smells weird, almost “dirty” in a sexual way, provocative maybe.
Reviewers seem to detect more notes as i see it in their posts, personally i can’t. I don’t think there’s anything else in here except patchouli. What might be happening is a mixing of the perfume and their body chemistry, and the perfume changes. Still, I’m no expert, so other people more specialized might be right.
The opening is medicinal and disgusting. The moment i felt the medicine burst on my wrist, i said: yes please, I’m taking it, i want it, now! It’s disgusting in a good way. It keeps like that for about half an hour, it loosens just a bit when it dries. It’ earthy, herbal, HEADY, intense and pungent. It has a bite to it, not a friendly fragrance, i also find it a little depressing. The best performance of it though is when it heats up on your skin, i personally wore it all year round, and it got “dirty” on me after vigorous activity, or just workout. After some hours of wear, it turns woody on me and incensey.
Hands down you will be noticed; the reactions vary a lot. It’s long lasting, sillage is superb, no need for many sprays, although i did bathe in it gladly, and everyone will turn their head to look at you. While i was wearing it, almost every place i would sit, the person next to me would turn and sniff, some of them quite politely, others with a disgust on their faces, others shyly ask what am I wearing; you will get noticed. Full stop.
Another thing that I liked about this fragrance, something that none other has done yet for me, is that trail of a scent you leave when you walk, and others walking by get it. When I was little I would wait for that trail of perfume, which a lot of women and men would leave, I wanted to smell it, and as a grown up I wish others to sniff my scent likewise. As I have noticed a lot of mainstream fragrances do not do that(with some exceptions of course), or women choose not to make a statement with their perfumes anymore… The only serious competitor in that trail is Jungle Kenzo (totally different perfume but equally potent, medicinal and long lasting)
Another reason that intensified my love towards Patchouli Absolu is “the base” that it is. Realistically, it is a base. It’s patchouli throughout and throughout, so i used it to intensify and alter other perfumes, which lacked that something interesting. So i layered a bunch of them, e.g. weekend by Burberry, it’s so powdery sometimes it’s unbearable, but layered with my bad boy, it’s a completely different perfume. So London by Burberry, and all the Narciso Rodriguez ones, which are fabulous on their own and do not need any layering, smelled even deeper and more sensual with some Patchouli Absolu. I ve layered it with White musk oil from Body shop and it works wonderful as well
Obviously this review isn’t unbiased because i love patchouli absolu. So so much.

This is what a Satyr smells like as he leads you down a dim damp wooden path. It is dirty and earthy and evil in its confidence. This is by no way a womens scent unless she wears logging boots and shaves her legs with an axe.For men 30 yrs.or older. The opening is very similar to Costume National Soul. I love this scent and do believe you become nose blind when in it. Not a beast but if you are an arms length you will be smelled. 10 to 12 hrs I can smell on my skin. This is for men with mustaches who earned them. Urban Hippster be warned not for you. Fisbee tossing Hippie you are warned as well no head shop purple patchouli here “Man” Confidant and rugged. A scent to build a empire or plan a heist to.

I love this one. I have a lot of experience with it. I have irresistible urges of Pandoran nature with it. 4-5 sprays in the summer, and I unleash the Cracken of Patchouli from the depths of the earth. Choking out bystanders in a 6-8 foot radius. Their last thoughts before loosing consciousness…why does it smell like 1969?
This thing has a powerful, rumbling opening. Where all the raw untamed nature of the patchouli plant is uncompromisingly present. From the ultra green astringent nostril stinging aspect, to the sweet earthy comforting aspect. But all natural. All realistic and life like. For which I forgive the excesses and love it’s wildness.
Then. After an hour or so, things begin to settle into harmonious and smooth presentation of the full range of patchouli in a resounding and linear chord. That lasts forever. Ringing out triumphantly.
You don’t wear this meekly. You master it. Own it. And it let it express something deep and confident in you. Or you shrink back from it and don’t wear it.
Now. I’m coming down to the end of my bottle. And I’m trying to imagine not having it. And it’s a painful thought.
The thing is. I kind of hate and love Tom Ford in this regard. He curates a few magical concoctions that I love–Tobacco Oud and this one. And probably some of the new incense/green ones that just came out, that I just can’t bear to let myself smell and lust after. I hate the house because it’s so goddamn expensive. As if perfume should only be for royalty.
This also runs against my own style for how to use perfume. To uplift my usual day. To make myself feel transcendent and creative on a normal basis. Not to show off for some event-like purpose.
So that I just have a hard time lavishing myself with such luxurious expense to be used on a daily basis.
And so, I’m looking for a powerhouse patchouli scent that I don’t have to spend a big portion of my paycheck on. PM me if you have any ideas. I’m thinking of trying Nicolai Patchouli Intense. Which is half the price of this. And if it’s even close to as good, I would love to say goodbye to another one of Tom Ford’s Upper Manhattan ladies who are out of my league in terms of price. Like beautiful, spoiled, expectant, women, that are just…too much.

A strong patchoulli fragrance which is mostly unisex, mature and of high quality..
    I applied 6 heavy sprays
0 – 6 hours – 1.5 foot projection. This is of high quality, though not premium. It is, as the notes say, all about the patchoulli, which is quite damp. It has great performance and is very unisex and noticeable to others, so office colleagues will pick this up!
6 – 9 hours. 1 foot projection. It’s mostly linear but at times there is a little ash. Mature fragrance
9 – 12 hours – 6 inch projection and perhaps veering a little towards masculine now
    12 -18 hours Some projection
This is 100% patchoulli and there are no twists or other notes
    Very good

I love the opening, which seems to capture all the various facets of the plant, including the damp, musty, dirty, earthy aspects.
Longevity is good, although the sillage feels light and close to the skin.
The fragrance becomes progressively woodier and drier, and over time, the woody aspects eclipse the damp, dark, earthy elements.
In terms of this progression from damp earthiness to dry woodiness, Patchouli Absolu resembles another high-end fragrance I sampled recently: Amouage Bracken Man. The synthetic woody note that appears later in the drydown, to my nose, is identical to the one that appears in Bracken.
Whilst Patchouli Absolu is a very good fragrance indeed, I think I prefer Bracken Man, simply because there is more going on.

I love patchouli, and this is patchouli through and through. I love it.
initially it BURSTS with the patchouli note, dark, oily, skanky, brooding – all of which I love.
As it blooms the darkness brightens into an “aftershave-y” vibe – so I find it rather masculine but I think it’s still really good.
An hour or so in, this is not an overwhelming patchouli on me, it’s vibrant, a little heady and not heavy at all.
I don’t know if my skin, or my nose, has acclimatised to patchouli but as it evolves (2 hours in) it could be stronger for me.
This is really good though – and I totally recommend it.

wow. this is stank. from beginning to end, it is sheer stank, which may be your thang, but not me.
this is entirely base. no pleasant, roundabout sweetness or anything. straight to business, no small talk, no beg your pardons.
it could work in some occasions, but for me, personally, it lacks the subtlety i look for. but man, if you like patchouli in all its stank glory, give this one a go…

This one isn’t here to make jokes.
Patchouli Absolu is a stern fragrance. Dark and somber, but strangely comforting. I get an intense wave of mentholated patchouli with woods and a touch of herbs/spices. It’s very well blended and quite linear; after it settles on the skin it just stays there unaltered, consistently doin’ its thang. Definitely earthy, but not super-hyper dirty. Picture a damp and shady forest with massive ancient deciduous trees and a lot of mosses… However, there’s a dry element that keeps you from totally sinking into that swampy soil and foliage.
Really long-lasting (12h+ easily). If this fragrance was a pro wrestler, its entrance music would be “Not Going Away” by Ozzy Osbourne and it would surely give some serious a** whooping in the ring! It takes multiple scrubbings with soap to remove the remnants of it almost 24 hrs after the application. I’m applying it from a rollerball decant and it has a heavy’ish throw even with that method, so I presume it’s nuclear when sprayed. It’s on the masculine side of unisex, but totally wearable for us women too. I really like it! Unfortunately it’s way too costly to even consider a full bottle. 🙁 Anyway, Patchouli Absolu is a must-try for all the patch lovers out there.
p.s. I imagine Ozzy Osbourne would wear this like a boss! 😀

I’ve always felt that patchouli only shines when it is lifted by citruses or florals. Pure patchouli, to me, smells like a fresh beetroot plucked from the soil. So I am surprised that after two large samples, I find myself craving this perfume. I still get the damp, earthy patchouli beginning, but it does settle to a slightly sweeter version. The strength is phenomenal, and the sillage is epic.
It’s not for everyone, in fact, I have been told by people when I wear it that they don’t like it. But if you are after a strong, by and large, pure patchouli, then this is for you.

Ok, 3rd review of this gem because I am just so excited…
The more I wear this, the more I LOVE it. In fact it has now moved up to my top 5 fragrances of all time. My 15 year old patchouli oil is still up there as well but instead of competing with patchouli absolu, it compliments it.
Patchouli brings so many fine memories for me. I still don’t associate patchouli with hippies but I do associate it with creativity and art. I discovered it in university when a very attractive man walked by me in the library. I followed his scent and almost fainted from it because I never smelled anything SO pleasing to my scent profile (I had no idea about scents prior to this experience, like literally none – I used generic gap fragrances). I had no idea what he was wearing and was too shy to ask but on my way home I entered a shop that sold statues and trinkets from Thailand. They had a huge incense collection and as I began smelling the incense sticks, I picked up the patchouli one and there it was – his scent. I instantly b
