I have no idea how or why this should be the case, but Esteban PASSION BRESIL smells very similar to Dior J’ADORE, which is to say Fragonard BELLE DE NUIT, which is to say Bond no 9 ASTOR PLACE. I do not believe that these four are identical, and the listed notes are all over the map, but somehow the overall effect is the same: a slightly sweet linear floral with a thick cloth texture in some ways similar to that of ALLURE or DUNE, albeit covered with very different embroidered designs.
Since I cannot wear J’ADORE because of some mystery note that makes me ill even to get close to the bottle, I am always happy to find surrogates that have kindly omitted that note but manage to convey the same spirit and scent. I do like this composition, and I do not think that Esteban copied Dior or Fragonard or Bond no 9, but they did all manage to produce a very similar fragrance somehow.
The case of J’ADORE and unintended siblings raises the interesting question of the birth of a perfume. How does a fragrance become a distinct and recognizable object that exists in reality? We perfumistas learn to recognize certain iconic fragrances by name, and sometimes it comes as easily as recognizing a cat or the sun. But before some perfumer somewhere decided to mix together the many components in his elixir, that thing (in this case J’ADORE and siblings) did not exist. In the olden days, Calvin Klein really capitalized on this miraculous perfume creation act. Nothing smelled like ETERNITY, ESCAPE, TRUTH, and OBSESSION when they were launched, and now they exist as perfume concepts for all time.
Needless to say, anyone who likes J’ADORE, BELLE DE NUIT, or ASTOR PLACE is bound to like PASSION BRESIL. And anyone who does not will not.
