No listing for the Open ‘Gold’ flanker?
I’d love some feedback on this one, from the extremely limited info I’ve found it is close to the original but perhaps more modern smelling. Apparently it’s already been discontinued though (but can still be found at low prices).

For young folks under fifty this one is like driving into a wall. Upon application their brains cannot process the notes, bam! Their brain is maxed at 100%, birds flutter around their heads. The opening notes settle, confusion, shock. For older folks this puts hair on their puffed out chests. For older folks this is a calming relief. Steer clear youngsters

Gorgeous! Full disclosure: I haven’t tried it. Stopped a woman in the store today and told her she smelled great! She said people tell her that all the time. It was a cosy, spa-like herbal scent that kept me circling back to where she stood. “It’s actually a men’s cologne,” (this is no deterrent to me. My nose likes what it likes). I’m not shy, and asked what she was wearing. She said “Open, and I can only get it online.” Maybe I’ll spring for a bottle. Fantastic stuff!

My father had this one and many fragrances from the 80’s. I mean my father had Lapidus ph, Kouros, Fahrenheit, Ungaro, Jazz YSL, as soon as a men fragrance comes out, my dad would get it. He was such an inspiration to me while growing up. I don’t think I would have known so much about perfume if it weren’t because of him. I used to steal his perfume bottles and wear them to school, party while still in my early teens. Thank you dad for opening my eyes to great masculine fragrances.

    A genuine classic frag!
The opening is quite overwhelming at first, very smokey and “bitter”.
However, give it 30-40 minutes and you will be rewarded with a very masculine, nostalgic and elegant scent. Over the course of a couple of hours, the base notes will finally settle in and embrace you with their warmth for a good few hours more.
    Love it.

A very classic old aged fragrance my father use to have. It so masculine and well blended that you will not find another fragrance within this price tag as good as this one. The longevity and projection is very very good. The top notes are very spicy and aromatic but what i love about this perfume is the tobacco mixed with citrus notes in base which lasts on you for more then 6 hours. A great old school highly complimented fragrance. A MUST TRY!!!

A smoker wearing tea rose! very strong and heavy
    don’t blind buy.
edit: after couple of months use, i must say I like this a lot
i dont smell any smoky notes now , just masculine flowery-herbal notes.
    very manly and classic.
but remember: don’t spray more than two times.

There’s no listing for Open White so I’ll put my review of it here:
This isn’t bad at all if it’s what you’re seeking. Let’s begin with the notes:
    Yuzu, Bergamot, Aniseed.
    Frankincense, Violet.
    Patchouli, Iris, Tonka bean.
With those base notes you might think it’s going to be a powdery A*Men type, but this has a totally different construction. At first, it’s a bit of a mess, with nasty note clashes, but that only lasts several minutes. Then it’s like a light version of Lolita Lempicka au Masculin, with the aniseed being dominant, though not irritating. The other notes are largely supporting if not nearly imaginary. It is a bit sweet too, so some might say this is like anise candy. The frankincense seems to impart a hint of something ashy/dirty, but the base notes listed are barely there, at best. Projection is moderate (with one spray) but longevity is good to very good. So, if you’ve already got a licorice or anise-dominant scent you may not have a place for this one, but if you want a mild anise scent that is sweet, this is worth considering (and it’s cheap – my 100 ml was less than $10 new).

This reminds me of Gillette Cool Wave aftershave. It is horrendous though I understand why others have commented on its barber shop smell. It smells cheap and the chemical ingredients may explain why I’m getting a headache from using it. This awful stuff is light years away from Bois d’Orange or the classic L’homme (old formula). Such a shame.

  14. :

I got the Roger and Gallet Open Black in the mail. Was disappointed to discover that it was 90% [or more] identical to their L’homme perfume. I like it very much, but was expecting to receive something new and exciting, since I like variety

  15. :

    3 out of 5

Inexpensive and for a reason. It is almost headache inducing and fades very quickly. The bottom line is that after having it on most people remark that i smell like soap – clean barbershop talc sort of soap. Not what i am going for. There really is just nothing here to get interested in – good price or no.

This is a french perfume, But it has an Italian impression. Inexpensive and very good choice. Somewhat cross between Versace l’homme and pacco rabanne pour homme. Lovely

Open is extremely good value for money. A very well-blended lavender/patchouli that is great on its own or layered with some leathery or smoky.

I love this one. Definitely for mature. For the price you pay for this, its a gem.
I can feel the excellent combination of lemon, tobacco and patchuli. Makes you feel fresh and confident throughout the day. Stays on for 8+ hours on clothes, perfect for office wear.

Can any one suggest another perfume like “Open” with similar fragrance and more intensity (long lasting)?
The present “Open” is not quite similar to what it used to be back in 2004-2005. That was really long-lasting. The present production by Roger and Gallet seems to wear out within 1-2 hr. Though the box says “Made in France”.
haven’t they produced a perfume with similar fragrance & considerable longevity?

Dont understand what the hype is about.
If you wanna smell like a soap. Yes !! Go for it !
Its not worth at all I just didnt get the Tobacco, Lavender or Thyme. I dont know what this is.

Amazing, fabulous , old school fragrance. I am not sure about new formulations as i have not tried any, but for the older one, highly recommended. It is a gentlemen cologne.

  22. :

    3 out of 5

    Beautiful old school!
It’s a bit conservative compared to today’s fragrance for ….. however, sophisticated and definitely masculine pieces!
Soap, mossy, aromatic ingredients competing for it, however the sumptuous quality higher category!
After 40 years of faithful companion in everyday life and not last conquest ….
    My assessment 8/10
    Stable classic fragrance.
    Definitely worth a try!

A so classic scent the citrus and tobacco conquered especially at the opening, herbs and lemon are obvious at the drydown, longevity is superb 8 to 10 hours i hope i can try the other kind of this one

Thanx for sharing your secret! As there are literally no reviews of OpenBlack/White anywhere else online. Not even on Fragrantica! Opened Black I bought after reading your review (secret !)and liked it a lot.
As there aren’t any testers available, could you write about OpenWhite’s notes a bit more?
    Good reviews, both!

Well folks, i decided to try Open Black. Just got it from Amazon yesterday. One word sums it up.
    AMAZING.
Truly mindblowingly fantastic. This one is just on another level. Those of you guys who love Open like i do will absolutely, absolutely be cosmically blown away by Open Black. Word of caution, this stuff is P O T E NT, so go easy on the spritz. Amazingly sexy is what it is.

Extraordinary!!!!! A blind purchase, highly recommended by a coworker who said she found it most appealing when her husband wore it. Herself clearly having made selections of perfumes which I always found to be agreeable. I recall how good she always smelled. She told me she had been unsuccessful in tracking down Open in Australia, but whenever they were in Dubai that she would get some. I found it on one of the online merchants sites and made the purchase along with other products. Extraordinary!!! To this day I don’t know if I like it or not, unusual for me. When I first smelled it I was literally shocked by this fragrance, I’ve never had such a reaction to any fragrance before. It provoked a deep reaction in me as bizarre as it sounds. It lasted on my skin for many hours and I remember thinking, my God will I ever get the smell off me. I had applied it to my arm as an initial test point. I was however so intrigued by it and my reaction to it that I felt compelled to leave it on and see what it would do. It was some three weeks before I would pluck up the courage to apply it again, this time in the normal way, not just on an arm. Again mixed feelings but as it went through its metamorphosis I found it settled. It smelled less like burning plastic and more warm and woody, but kind of soapy. It has many layers and is very complex. It makes a strong statement, is very masculine but for sure it’s a case of less is more. I find it interesting because with fragrances I usually like them or I don’t. It’s definitely one that warrants a fair go because of its complexity and is many layers. I’m intrigued by it and will persevere because I think it has extraordinary qualities.

    Quite franky, a revelation!
I bought this on the promise of similarity to Sergio Tacchini by Sergio Tacchini but found it much better.
Considering I got this on Ebay for < £20 (GBP), I wasn’t really expecting anything special but on my skin, it simply exploded with initial floral notes and massive projection.
The dry down to woody/herbal/tobacco notes was very linear but the longevity on my skin was astonishing.
I spritzed this on at 7:00 in the morning but could easily still smell it on my skin at 10:00p.m.
Under normal circumstances, I would expect to pay £75+ for a fragrance with this sillage and longevity.
    A definite keeper!

Finally….Just got another bottle after many years. This is gorgeous! A very potent “old school” floral, soapy tobacco fragrance. Lasts and projects excellently.
The sillage is really lovely. As someone said, it IS a little like Sung Homme, except Open has that lovely tobacco note and mellow spices.
Delightful product from the great Roger & Gallet and definitely in my top ten!

Another old school perfume with a slightly bitter lavender citrus opening and a soapy tobacco woody dry down. it is very linear after the initial notes and that is a good thing because the wonderful dry down goes on forever. from the same family tree as quorum, Polo Green, Paco Rabanne PH, Boss No.1,etc so if you like any of those, you will appreciate this as well. This is a simple, understated masculine fragrance and I like it a lot.
    8/10

vintage scents, plastic part on top of the bottle and cap make OPEN look very cheap, citrus opened gone in 5 minutes and soapy smell call the back old days . Another nice scents for 30+ male.

    what a composition is this!
soapy, lavender, sage , citrussy feel at the opening.
very lovely woody dry base, almost burned woody with lavender soap.
    very refined
longevity is very good 8-10 hours
    silage a good 6-8 hours
van gils classic, has the same smell, but is younger and more wearable

  41. :

What I get here are flash backs of Antaues, Kiton and Havana. A great scent. It’s like when I prepared French dinners and could smell the freshly cut sage and thyme on my hands for hours afterwards. Open is that burst of herbs. Very genuinly done. Amazing you can get 100 ml of it for 40 euro.

  42. :

    3 out of 5

THIS is Different from the other usual scents out there, I don’t see the comparisons to Quorum and such.
It definitely comes across as a more mature gentleman’s cologne. To me it starts off as rather acrid but if given time it mellows out……a little.
Why a “little”?………well it is still a rather DRY and herbal scent with some citrus thrown in.
It does have good longevity and you should not have to worry about wearing something that other gents at the party might be wearing.

  43. :

  44. :

    5 out of 5

If you’re interested in trying this, get ready for a super DRY scent! Look at the notes: sage, thyme, vetiver, lemon, lavender. Wearing this could dehydrate you.
Although it’s got great sillage and longevity (12+ hours), I don’t find Open very powerful. It’s light, herbal and very transparent, not rich or heavy at all. It smells like a soap scented with sage and cloves, and it has a great tart, woody drydown with the vetiver and tobacco in the base.
If you’re a fan of stuff like Equipage or Jacomo de Jacomo, you’ll probably really like Open. I love it.
    MY RATING: 8.5/10

  45. :

    4 out of 5

This is a master of woody scents. I bought this blind on first spray I wasn’t sure if this is for me. But I was wrong the woody and spicy notes started kicking in and I was happy that I got this EDT. It’s really for a man, very masculine, I don’t think this is retro this is all time fragrance. I still smell this after 10 hours.

    Scent -9.5
    Silage 9
    Overall 9.50

This is a great woody aromatic fragrance. The spices are really nice. This fragrance is not for everyone it’s kind of love or hate fragrance. I suggest try before you buy. The longevity is excellent, projection and silage is very good. Drydown is very nice. I am not sure if any one below 25 yrs will use it. But yes my score is 8.5/10

  47. :

    5 out of 5

A retro soapy monster that definitely seems to get its inspiration from the 1970s. Very similar in my opinion to Sung Homme and Quorum in its unashamedly masculine dry down, and just as inexpensive to buy as either. I love it!!

Once again, a blind purchase that gave me a huge satisfaction.
This scent is made for active and dominant men. I can go further: Open was idealized for men who have “open mind” to the world and its passions.
Its fragrance is very powerful, refined and virile. It remains on the skin for more than 6 hours with the same intensity. Its freshness – resulting of Amalfi Lemon and sage notes – along with the dry notes of vetiver and tobacco make this cologne a true champion in the compliments category.
When I wear this one, I have the absolute certainty that I become the most confident and elegant man in the world.
And, of course, the best for the last: just a few people know it, which makes it a little bit more exclusive!

  56. :

    5 out of 5

Filling the opening is Spices, Green, and Resinous woods, with a zesty Citrus background. When I first tried Open it was surprisingly potent to me, I was expecting it to be an Eau de Cologne strength. It is a full-bodied, sharp and rich EDT, with excellent sillage.
Moss, Vetiver, Sandalwood, and Amber contribute to the scent’s masculine soapy overtone that lingers throughout the heart and base notes. The soapiness is even present during the opening. There is a very light peppery sharpness in the background that lasts for the life of the scent.
This was my first Roger & Gallet fragrance and I was impressed. I find I am reaching for Open more and more as a regular daily spritz. Energizing. Very well done and long lasting.
