This is a really unique and interesting take on vanilla. It actually doesn’t smell much of vanilla at all. At least not the traditional vanilla we all suspect to get when we think of a vanilla fragrance.
Vanilla is a perfume note with many nuances. The type of vanilla used, and where the species of vanilla orchid it comes from grows, has a lot to say in how vanilla smells. Vanilla can have woody qualities, leathery qualities, it can have nuances of spices, earthiness, flowers and fruits.
This vanilla fragrance is composed of all the different nuances vanilla can have, and not really the typical sweet, creamy, desert like vanilla note that’s so common. And that is what makes this scent genius in my opinion. Vanilla can be a bit boring, but this clever interpretation of the note takes vanilla to a whole new level and makes it intriguing again.
On my skin this is a dark, woody and smoky scent with gorgeous nuances of cumin and cloves. I think I detect a little heat from pepper in here as well. It’s a fiery and exciting smell, with a warm, glowing and discrete sweetness, much like the aroma of an oriental spice market somewhere in a story from 1001 Nights.
As the scent softens on the skin more of the smooth balsamic and slightly traditional vanillic smells comes through, but the scent never turns completely vanillic. It just has that little hint of familiar vanilla, just a reminder of this perfumes’ core and theme.
I find this utterly beautiful. It’s a smart, creative and kind of intellectual take on a vanilla scent, and I really appreciate that. It’s refreshing!
On my skin this scent lasts for over 8 hours, and the sillage is pretty much a solid medium.

Bear with me here – I’m going to review it, and then explain why my review might be off.
I ordered a sample of this back in December, and it arrived in mid-January (that’s what I get for ordering during Christmas!). I let it rest for about three weeks, then tried a spritz – leather, perhaps a bit of split wood, like birch. Decided to let it rest, and tried it again today (two months later), three spritzes – leather/birch. I can’t smell any of the other notes, no florals, no incense, and certainly no vanilla
Now, I did order Cuir de Russie in the same sample pack, and I’m really wondering if somehow the two got their labels switched – Cuir de Russie smells a bit more floral when sniffed from the bottle (will wear it tomorrow to confirm on skin).
One last bit of advice: when ordering a sample set: I would advise you order the perfume, an not the eau de perfume – even of you intend of purchasing EDP of what you like. The EDP comes in a spray bottle, meaning you really have to use them to smell – the perfumes come in a vial, so it would be much easier to decant and sniff to tell if they had settled from travel/ matured at all. I got 4 spritzes from my EDP sample, and might get one more – not a lot of room to play with!

This is one of Zworykina’s best sellers. Starts out very smokey, like cigarette smoke. After some time, the vanilla comes out, pierced by flowers that are both bright and mild. I think this was the intention of Nicolai’s Tonka Vanille, that may smell pretty on others, but just turned sour on me.
Edit Sept. 19th
I get why it’s a best seller as it’s absolutely gorgeous. Spicy and warm without being too sweet. It could probably not be considered sweet at all. The spices come out more in colder weather.
