Description

Molecule 02 is a perfume from the second, new series of synthetic fragrances from Escentric Molecules company. Together with the new Escentric 02, it revolves around ambroxan, separated as the central note, a component of ambergris. Molecule 02 contains only ambroxan, which is a great fixation, and therefore stays with you all day, very pleasant, velvety, warm and delightfully sweet, non-obtrusive. Read more about ambroxan here. The perfume was launched in 2008. The nose behind this fragrance is Geza Schoen.

this is (to my nose) harder to detect than Molecule 01, 01 i was always a lil skeptical that ppl can’t smell anything on you and so i got it and i’m like “umm it radiates this woody scent” it was a little surprising to me at that time.
but for this one, i can like barely detect something almost like a way soft sea salt / breeze without the actual aquatic smell of the ocean but i don’t even know if that’s what it’s suppose to be or if i’m having some sort of placebo effect. i don’t get anything other than that; there is some sort of high note that i can’t really explain the scent of it.
I can’t really tell if this is safe or not
the opening yes you get the alcohol smell because (just like 01) it’s just used as a mixing agent so it’s not really a big deal and it goes away very quickly
wish i could actually rate this but it’s pretty difficult at this time

It was given to me as a gift but i dont smell anything beyond alcohol. Ambroxan is very fainted and it comes later but for me is a pass, nothing remarlable. Still molecule 01 is much better.

After the sales success that occurred in 2006 with Molecule 01 and its pair, Escentric 01, the perfumer Geza Schoen created another duo of fragrances worked on a specific synthetic molecule. This time, ambroxan was the key ingredient for the creation of new perfumes, launched in 2008: Molecule 02 and Escentric 02.
And just as I did in the review od the first one, I think it is worth giving a glimpse of what such a molecule called Ambroxan would be. It is obtained in the laboratory, from the sclareol which, in turn, is extracted from the Clary sage. It began to be explored in perfumery as a substitute for ambergris (that one of the sperm whale, rich in Ambrein) and can impart smooth nuances of amber or even of labdanum, although its main characteristic is not the smell, but the power to extend the longevity of fragrances.
In market terms, it is common to say that ambrox and ambroxan are the same things. Besides that, in addition to these names, the ambroxan would also be commercially known as Ambroxide and Cetalox. But those who know these components thoroughly say that there are differences in the potency of the smell they exude and how they are refined.
On my skin, Molecule 02 behaved very much like Molecule 01, that is, it starts super alcoholic, then it disappears, and out of the blue (as if in magic) it begins to exhale a certain perfume, completely harmless. In this respect, Molecule 01 was more noticeable to me. But unlike the expectation I created before I try the first one, here I was already prepared for what I would find. In addition, in Molecule 02 the opinions also diverge a lot and while some extol a wonderful smell of metallic amber, others say that they feel nothing, besides alcohol. On my skin, although very, very, very subtle, I can feel a slightly earthy and salty smell. And again, it is worth remembering that this molecule is known as “skin scent”, so it is not a bomb.
Therefore, aware of the concept of layering proposed by Escentric Molecules, I discovered the best way to get results with this fragrance (which is not cheap). First, you can not apply, like a madman, all over your body. In terms of single use, I had more results when I applied two layers, with time spaced, in the same places. But what I like to do is to apply Molecule 02 on fragrances that already have ambroxan and I want them to last longer, as in the case of Bright Neroli and Jimmy Choo Man Ice, for example.
Particularly, I think that is very amusing to play with the myriad possibilities that a molecule can give, but this comes at a cost and is not cheap. Therefore, I prefer (and I suggest) to invest in the beauty of the composition of Escentric 02 than in the purity of a molecule that may not even be noticed by the user.

I recently discovered this hidden gym and am very happy with it. I suppose it gets overshadowed by 01, but I tried that one and it didn’t do anything for me at all. It had no smell and didn’t really amplify any other fragrances like I’ve heard it was supposed to. 02 however is a different story. You can wear it by itself or use it for layering with fragrances to amplify the ambroxan note. I find it works particularly well with Sauvage EDT or EDP, Bleu de Chanel EDT, EDP, or Parfum, Acqua di Gio Profumo, and Creed Aventus. I’m sure there are plenty of others too, but those I can attest to as I’ve experimented layering it with all of them. It increases the longevity by 2-3 hours and makes the fragrance project a lot more as well. So in the long run you will save money buy buying this because you will be able to get more out of your fragrance with a lot less sprays.

Hmmm. I am a big fan of Molecule 01 and was drawn in by the adoring reviews of 02, but I am stumped by it. I have a super-keen sense of smell and love the subtle aroma of 01 (and I’ve tried buying straight iso e super and didn’t get the same results… weirdly), however, I am totally blind to 02. It smells strongly of alcohol in the first instance and then disappears completely.
So then I realised what could be done with it when I bought a sample of Chanel Chance. I’m a Chanel no 19 fan but found Chance way too sweet and typically sweet like many modern fragrances. However, zap it with a squirt of 02 and it’s completely lush. 02 seems to masculine-ise the sickly sweet Chance, in a really subtle, lovely way, which appeals to my androgynous nature. Additionally, I have a lovely small cloud around me that I can enjoy too – I wear fragrances for my own enjoyment over other peoples’ attention, so not being able to smell myself utterly defeats the object for me.
I was interested to read of someone combining 01 and 02, I may try that when both bottles are getting low.
In all, I’m not too sure about this one. I think I may have to try the eccentric 02 to see what’s next in the eccentric journey.

This is my new signature scent… unbelievable projection and longevity smh can’t believe the sillage has such a terrible rating on here? First time I ever smelled this was at my job a coworker of mine wore it and it filled the entire room up and lingered around for a while well after he left the room… and the crazy thing about it is that it wasn’t offensive at all… the smell is so alluring and inviting and just amazing smh Aventus was my signature scent, Molecule 02 is taking its place… that’s saying something… only problem is yes, you can’t smell it on yourself you get oalfactor fatigue to it quick, but people around you smell it for HOURS and boy do they love it… when I first smelled this I was instantly hooked, no bs, I was obsessed with this scent I wanted to buy it ASAP lol it’s that alluring… for a fragrance to perform as beastly as this does and not offend anybody? Is hard to find smh you will be noticed with this… you will be remembered with this smell…. people will miss this smell when you’re not at work or where ever you are… you will leave an imprint with this, an identity. People will recognize you with this smell, you hug a girl, it gets on her clothes and will stay on it for days and all she will think about is you… it’s so unique… it’s just a perfect signature scent for a MAN

    @Doc Elly @picknenders …
hiya good folks ! Am planning on putting the dollars on this very soon. I already have the dior sauvage edt. Would like ur feedback if this will/can ramp up the existing notes of the dior?
Also plan on buying the profumum roma – ambra aurea ! I understand the difference between amber & ambergris, but just like to know if it makes sense in layering these two. btw, Ambra also does list grey ambergris as a note in it. Will buying molecule 02 really help ramp up the projection quotient of both the other two frags? Thanks guys !

So beautiful, I lucked out I was running out of molecule 01 , had quite a bit of this molecule 02 and also by Kilian’s staight to Heaven , so I put my remaining molecule 01 in with my much larger amount of molecule 02, and just a sparing amount of straight to heaven for that fresh cut smooth silky genuine wood note just as a subtle modifier. Wow it worked out well. Now I have still pretty much same amount straight to heaven that I started with, and I’ll consider my previously dwindling depressing empty bottle of molecule 01 has been transformed into a product greater than the sum of its parts with the enigmatic abstract beauty molecule 02, which is potentiated to say the least by the little bit of Kilian STH . Now it’s just a matter of working up the cajones to wear this and not be precious with it, like I tend to be with things of mine that happen to be extremely nice / very expensive. Being like that takes most of the joy away for me so I have to deceive myself , with white lies and non verbal cues. I’m pretty sure I’m buying it/ falling for it

This is what keeps me interested in this hobby. Out of the many fragrances I own, niche, designer, rare and common – this one is one of the more intriguing scents. At first, a vodka type smell – but then, waves of warm musky amber. It comes, it goes. 10 sprays, 1 spray – same result: wonderful waves of warmth. I think it’s top notch.
    Edit:
So I’m coming back to edit this because, hey, if I were going to blind buy, I’d want as many details as possible! Hopefully this helps.
I was not a fan of molecule 01 – not only could I barely smell it – but when I did get a whiff, I was unimpressed. With that in mind, I feel like this is the polar opposite: molecule 02 is more noticeable (to me) – additionally, I think the smell is fantastic. This is the same note that provides the backbone of sauvage (not to say this is the only thing that makes sauvage popular) – my best description is slightly sweetened vodka for the initial spray. Once it soaks in and gets moving, I believe it turns into an amber-musk combo. Warm, glowing, faint. It’s never overwhelming. It does indeed come and go – but it never totally diminishes. It does garner random attention even when you haven’t smelled it for hours. Part of the draw to this, at least for me, is that it’s the complete opposite of most popular fragrances. On the contrary, I can understand the detractors, as this is indeed a simplistic scent. Regardless, I find it to be one of the most appealing scents I’ve come across. To me, this is basically a masculine scent. I don’t believe it would fit any of the females I routinely associate with – but hey, a smell is a smell. Hopefully it works for you too!

Not so distant from Molecule 01 Iso super ,but stronger on my skin and not so pale.Opens like a Vodka with mineral salt, clear and icy cold.Amazing synthetic emotionless odor and i prefer it over Molecule 01 because its uncertain performance.

@ missmim Juliette Has a Gun Not a Perfume is different because there is cetalox, not ambroxan. I love Molecule 02. I am neutral to Not a Perfume.

On my skin once the alcohol wears off, it comes across to me as sand, although I’m not sure if thats the fragrance or the image that comes across. Then it turns a bit woody, vaguely woody atleast. For some reason it annoys me, no offence to those out there that love it, but this one is a no go for me, maybe my nose just detests ambroxan who knows..

  16. :

    4 out of 5

It has a salty, “bodily” scent that on some days is so strong and on others is barely noticeable. I really can’t figure out why, but it must depend on my body I guess (eg bldy wash, humidity, temperature, fabric, etc). I mainly use it to layer with other perfumes to have them smell a little differently, just to give them some novelty. It has worked well with musky, floral, and woodsy perfumes. It can be addicting at times.
This and 01 are great additions to anyone’s collection to either wear on their own or to layer with other perfumes. This one, I think, is the most universal of this brand’s single note scents in order to work with layering.

Finally reunited with Molecule 02 (after I tried to replace it with 01, which didn’t go well). It sits better on fabric, then on skin. And it’s not the smell you feel every second you (or somebody around you) wear it. It comes in waves 🙂

  18. :

Leans masculine for me. It has that sort of warm salty/briny smell combined with a really “fuzzy or rough” nose feeling which is how I interpret ambergris as a scent overall. I like it okay but I’ll stick with Pinrose Pillowtalk Poet for my ambergris fix. Pillowtalk has the same sort of ambergris smell (ambergris/ambroxan bomb) but it is a slightly brighter, more feminine and powdery take.
I think 02 would make a great fall/autumn scent for a man – there is something really sensual and cozy about ambroxan imho.

After thoroughly enjoying Molecule 01, I obtained a sample of Molecule 02 which I also loved.
Instead of purchasing Molecule 01, I purchased a Molecule 01 Iso E Super solution on eBay for 1/10 the price and to my surprise, it smelled just like the authentic Molecule 01 sample I previously obtained.
I tried my luck again with Molecule 02 and instead purchased the Molecule 02 Ambroxan solution. I’m happy to report back it smelled exactly like my sample of authentic Molecule 02. Paid $15 instead of $150.
Molecule 02, Ambroxan, has this undescribable mineral yet sweet smell that is addicting. It’s light in nature but has a lingering effect. Makes the perfect summer fragrance.

Got crystalline ambrofix and dissolved it in perfume alcohol, 10%. The magic of molecule 02 did not work for me. It does not smell. May be slightly rubbery and gasoline-like, but then again, I spent an hour in hot car.
    Overpriced, overhyped

Molécule 02 is nuclear in its strength and longevity. I put a tiny little drop on my wrist and my shirt smell for like 30 days with many (desperate) wash to get it off. Does it smell good? Well yes but it’s the opposite of what I like. To me an extreme longevity is a bad thing. I love that my perfume become more faint at the end of the day. That bomb never let go of your nostrils. And it’s extremely masculine. I really don’t get the comparisons with Not a Perfume. NAP is feminine, polite and a bit bland (but that’s the idea). Two very different take on the same concept.

    @ jacobbonilla
Yes. Exactly. Ambroxan is the main player in Creed “ambergris” base and Aventus is very good example of ambroxan use. The next example of pioneer ambroxan using is Guy Laroche Drakkar Noir or Azzaro pour homme (both in vintage form).

Be warned!.Highly Addictive!….I’ve been wearing this for the last three days. I am really impressed with how modern, sexy, and alluring this scent is. I’m so glad I stumbled opon this at scentbar . After experiencing this scent I can now clearly see the Ambroxian in Creed fragrances, especially Aventus. The note of ambroxian is a metallic, minerally , salty sexyness. It jumped straight to the top of my to buy list!… Beware It’s a peek-a-boo scent

  28. :

    4 out of 5

Maybe it’s because Ambroxan is relatively heavy and meant to be a base note, for the entire first 5 minutes after I applied Molecule 02, I can’t smell anything significant besides the alcohol. Slowly, a soft, smooth, abstract sweetness starts to emerge from my skin.
At first, this abstract sweetness is accompanied by something vegetal around the edge, even akin to celery to my nose, which then turns more mineral and occasionally pine-like after about 3 hours. This faint mineral edge shimmers upon the mild, suave ambery warmth, providing an unconventional freshness, which makes Molecule 02 quite pleasant to wear.
The sillage I can perceive is extremely close to skin, and the longevity is around 9 hours. Like the other Molecules from Escentric Molecule, the composition itself may seem overpriced, but its concept and the fact that it introduced the idea to a broader audience that synthetic molecules themselves can make wonders, are nonetheless interesting. I’d recommend it to those who would like a mild, abstract, smell-good, “skin-like” fragrance without much recognisable “perfume” notes.

Cetalox (JHAG NAP) and Ambroxan (Molecule 02) are very different .

Juliette Has A Gun Not A Parfume (Cetalox) is comon powdery musky smell.

I started with M01 and my partner loved the smell so much she stole my bottle. Well im okay with it now because i found that i love M02 much more. I find it more masculine and works with my chemistry better than 01 did. It smells so pleasant, lasts the entire day and it isn’t loud and obtrusive like m01. Plus i’ve gotten great feedback from people…..but i cant smell anything on me. 🙁 Which is a huge downside with these type of fragrances. I might consider layering it with another fragrance.

Whilst I love Escentric 02 and can really smell it, this I can barely smell at all!!
Now perhaps it’s anosmia at work here but I do find this one rather disappointing. It’s a nice enough smell but barely there.
It’s like a clean human smell, for some reason it reminds me of my husband. It’s not a ‘perfume’ smell, in fact it’s pretty hard to describe… Definitely get a tester first to avoid disappointment!

On my skin, this is one of the longest lasting scents I have ever smelt. 48 hours and 4 showers later, after 1 spray on my chest, I am still getting whiffs of it. To me this smells very fresh and clean- and has attracted an unbelievable amount of compliments.

I consider this perfume to be very subtle, but after working in a lab for a month, wearing this, I got a fun comment about it. I was standing behind a girl, and she suddenly turned around and said: “I can smell that you are behind me. You’re been around here so much that I can totally smell you comming!… I mean: I can’t explain what I smell, but your perfume smells very nice, and it’s very recognizable” 🙂 I’m not used to such comments, so I didn’t really know how to react 😛 But at least, people around you will definitely be able to smell this! The girl was standing about 5-6 feet away, and it was 4 hours since I sprayed on the perfume 🙂 I remember first getting a sample, and got some of this on my jacket. Every time I passed that jacket, I HAD to smell the air! It smelt so damn nice! I can only den scribe it as very fresh, in a slightly sterile way, slightly sweet, but nothing like sugar… Probably like the sweetness of a lime, and it was just a very very attractive smell – I love to use it when I work with people 🙂

  37. :

This is extremely subtle and barely detectable to my nose… I’m quite confused by it because some seem to experience it quite strong.
I sprayed molecules 01 on one hand and 02 on the other, I certainly can detect 01 more than 02. Is ambroxan even more subtle than ISO-e Super?

  38. :

    3 out of 5

Dislike. I rarely thumb down a fragrance but I’m afraid this one earned it. Open us with a clear ethanol scent and then develops into this nasty rotten egg odor that people might confuse with body odor and that stays until the end. At the end you do get a nice sweet amber note but only at the very end of its journey. Molecule 01 was much better although it isn’t anything special either.

Unisex but more masculine which I love. Isn’t this the perfume that somehow brings out your own pheromones in amongst its beautiful simple woodsy smell? So essentially it is your own scent but mixed with the delicious simple amber musky scent… which lasts forever…. I could still smell it even after 2 showers!!! I adore this fragrance.

  41. :

    3 out of 5

EDIT: why I have seen a difference between bottles might be because some were older than others. Actually, it seems that the older this gets, the more it smells. Has anyone else experienced the same thing?
I think many people can’t smell this on them most of the time because this is a scent that is NOT close to the skin. Not that it smells strongly, but it almost seems like it needs to be diluted to some degree before you will be able to smell it, which causes it to not be detectable if you put your nose right where you sprayed it. The best favour you can do to yourself is NOT smelling this right after you spray it on yourself or others. Spoiler alert: it will smell isopropyl alcohol, which will temporarily make you anosmic to the smell of the ambroxan. Over time, you will also manage to get used to the ambroxan smell and not be able to smell it then either. SO: DON’T smell this perfume before it has dried, and smell at a distance of about 40-50 cm – that usually works.
I have also encountered some differences between bottles. The first one I got was the best thing ever! I could smell the perfume SO well, the lime, the gasoline-like smell, the amber-mineral smell, while the second bottle I bought was much weaker… I don’t know why there are such big differences between different bottles., but in general this perfume has quite a weak smell, it seems. I like it anyway.

  42. :

Interesting… One spritz and I get a green, woodsy softness. Rather masculine for my liking. Familiar smelling… Then I go to refresh and spray again… And …… Nothing. Literally, I smell nothing. I asked my hubby to take a whiff and he said I smelled like his old speed stick deodorant. Not worth the price in my opinion.

  43. :

    5 out of 5

To me this actually smells like gentle lime, gasoline, cold sunshine, maybe some metal and a little something sterile or mineral – still not sure. It’s clean and fresh, and a little synthetic. Just like molecule 01, this too disappears and appears again. It’s very simple on me – it doesn’t develop much at all, except for the initial alcohol smell going away… pause – at this point it smells nothing to me… then start again, with this slightly synthetic delightfulness. I imagine a dessert, open top car, refuelling it and driving again. My boyfriend said this smells somehow a little manly, but he liked it too 🙂 I like “skin but better”-scents, while this smells almost… sterile, but I somehow like it a lot. This can also be mixed with other scents.
About the price: is it expensive: yes! Over-prised? Hmm… maybe because of the fact that you can make this yourself: yes, the concept: definitely no in my opinion. I’ not anosmic to any of the molecule’s scents though – the appearing and disappearing is normal with these scents. I actually like that – to not be able to smell it all the time. It lasts on clothes for a looooong time.
I have smels Molecule o1 very successfully home-made, but Molecule 02 is harder to make – it can easily end up smelling like a sickly-sweet metal, even when properly diluted

  44. :

    5 out of 5

    Opening: Alcohol
Then it turns into a acetone type of scent.
while I start to panic thinking if this is how I’m going to smell for the rest of the day, Molecule 02 begins to open.
It feels fragile, like a hide and seek fragrance. At one moment you can smell something then the next is gone.
It feels ‘natural’ in the way that it doesn’t project as a perfume, sort of a skin scent.
And it keeps playing that game, it comes and goes.
    It’s interesting, clean.

  45. :

    How to make Molecule 02:
Buy a bottle of Ambroxan from Perfumer’s Apprentice on-line. It is cheap.
Buy a good size bottle of “perfumer’s alcohol” (pure ethanol, though to make it legal they add a little “denaturant” whose purpose is to taste horrid or make you nauseous if you drink it). You should be able to find that locally with some effort, but also on-line at saveonscents and many other places. You can probably get away with a cheap unscented vodka (essentially ethanol and water).
Put a small amount of ethanol into a bottle (any kind will do). Add Ambroxan (swirl to dissolve) until the mixture smells right when dried down on your wrist. It will probably be about 1 to 10% Ambroxan by volume (1 part Ambroxan to 10 to 100 parts ethanol) but different people smell Ambroxan very differently. Ambroxan is a solid at room temperature, so if you want to be quantitative weigh what you add, or make a saturated ethanol solution of Ambroxan first and use an eyedropper to measure that.
Nothing happens when you mix them. There is no magic, no special ingredient, no “wait a month while the scent matures”. All that is made up or imagined. It is basic chemistry. Commercial perfumeries usually add anti-oxidants and UV blockers to make the perfume last longer in the bottle, but they have no effect on the scent on your skin, and are completely optional. They also usually add a little water so that it doesn’t have as much of the strong sweet ethanol scent for the first few seconds. Tap water is fine but if you want to be really authentic use distilled water from the grocery store. Don’t add too much water or the Ambroxan will start precipitating (the solution will get cloudy, if that happens just add back some ethanol and it will clear up). I don’t add any water to my homemade perfumes – it makes no difference after the first 30 seconds because ethanol is very volatile (it all evaporates quickly).
You can make all the Molecule scents; the odorants are all are available from Perfumer’s Apprentice cheaply. Quite a few single molecules smell really good, including many not marketed by Escentric Molecules. It is great fun to experiment. If you start combining more than one you are entering the realm of perfume composition.
A few things that make all this a bit easier to do or nicer to use:
    – a few small glass reagent bottles with caps
    – disposable pipettes (just little plastic bulb thingies that make it
easier to transfer liquids and count drops)
    – a fillable perfume spray atomizer or roll-on bottle
These and other things are available at Perfumer’s Apprentice and
    many other places.
Nothing about this is the least bit dangerous as long as you keep open flame away from the pure ethanol. Even if the ethanol catches on fire you will just have a little desk top flambe – it doesn’t explode and it is easy to put out. Far less dangerous than having a can of gasoline around.
If all of this seems too annoying to go through, by all means spend $155 on a bottle of Molecule 02. It has a lovely subtle scent. You can make a liter for about $30. You can make 10 liters for about $150.
    Happy mixing!

This fragrance is so airy, light, and subtle but don’t underestimate it, it’s (molecular) structure allows the fragrance to stick around for hours if not days. Its sweet, warm, seductive, and as already mentioned in the description VERY PLEASANT. This scent can be worn literally throughout the entire year. I used this in conjunction with M01 and E03 and enjoy all three blended together. Do not just spray this once or twice, load yourself up anywhere between 4-10 sprays and you will enjoy this fragrance until your next shower. There is something in this fragrance that is extremely attractive and I just cannot put my finger on it. To be completely honest, I find all of the Escentric Molecules to be warm and inviting. I would be confident to say that I don’t understand how anyone could be offended by this fragrance.
If you are confused and undecided and do not know which EM fragrances to purchase, I highly recommend
    1. Molecule 01
    2. Molecule 02
    3. Escentric 03
(The rest are good but do not cause excited delirium like the aforementioned.)

the best fragrance i ever smelled. The only thing is that I smell it really strongly on other people (when they just pass by or if we sit in the same bar..ect) but I don’t smell it on me. I get alot of positive comments or I don’t get them at all. Some people never smell it. Some people are crazy about it.

A fresh green vegetable scent that lifts my spirits.
On me it smells like celery : I love celery. I work in a corporation with a scent free policy. Colleagues sick with allergies don’t complain about my Molecule 02.

I really, really like this fragrance! But..not as much as Molecule 01, which is my absolute favourite perfume EVER! I tried to keep Molecule 01 as a secret to other people around me, but just couldn’t because of the countless questions and comments I received about it. So, unfortunately, some people I know bought it as well. It may sound childish to some, but smelling it on other people made me feel less special. But then..eureka..I mixed my Molecule 01 with Molecule 02, which resulted in a beautiful, divine smell. It only takes a few sprays of Molecule 02 to transform Molecule 01 into a better version of itself;it smells heavenly, I feel special again and now I have an even better secret which, this time, I will keep to myself from people I know. But gladly share with all of you!

The secret to using this perfume is to apply it on top of your favorite fragrance. This is the way it works the best!!!
